Mystic Saison Renaud

Mystic Saison Renaud

Saison Renaud exemplifies a modern take on the traditional farmhouse ale. Made with just pilsner malt and Saaz hops, this recipe is made to truly let the assertiveness of our house yeast shine. Presenting a clean and crisp body, the spicy and fruity esters of the yeast prevail over a slight earthy bitterness from the Saaz.

The Name. Renaud show it’s french ancestry it naming after Bryan’s great grandmother, Florence Renaud, from Popple Dungeon, VT.

4.0 375 ml bottle from Our Daily Bread in Chatham, NY, served at cellar temp in a Duvel glass. Big-ish fluffy white head diminishes with some speed over a hazy medium-to-pale gold body....mostly sweet floral aroma - honesuckle and lilac - a bit of pepper, dry herbs (tarragon), grasses, faint doughy yeast...the body is drier than I might expect, in fact very very dry with a fairly biting bitterness and almost an acrid character coming through as it warms, though it is kept in check through the softness and suppleness of the thick malt character in the body...lots of mineral notes, sparkling and tingly carbonation. While I can’t quite say that this gets to the level of "exciting", it’s close, and definitely comes off as one of the more authentic, dry and enjoyable American saisons I’ve had lately.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a cloudy yellow with medium white head that lasts. The aroma is yeast, pepper, spice. Medium body, yeast, spice, light dry finish, good.
3.8 Green bottle that I picked up in the summer shared with some friends. Pale, clear yellow with a fluffy white head. Really nice nose, almost a hint of smoke, funk, Brett goodness. Dry finish, bitter, funky. Very interesting.
4.0 Bottle pour at Shelton Brothers. Clean crackery malt nose with lemon zest and good fruit esters. Classic saison yeast nose. Peppery finish. Simple and elegant, yet one of my favorite saisons from the Festival.
3.5 Hazy golden pour, large frothy head. Floral aroma, yeast, white bread, wheat, lighter citrus. Lemon zest up front gives way to bread, spices, yeast, light clove, grassy. Very soft and drinkable. Medium to lighter body
3.8 Bottle shared @sklepzpiwem.pl. Flowery and spicy aromas, wheat and bread notes a lot of yeasty scents and some delicate hay in the background. Pours pale straw with a thick very nicely lacing white frothy head. Taste is very balanced with a lot of bready and yeasty flavors Mid-high carbonation and light body. Overall a very nicely balanced saison. Really enjoyed this one. Would be great on a warm, sunny day.
3.1 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy medium yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (grain, cracker), lightly hoppy (flowers), lightly to moderately yeasty (basement), with notes of banana, concrete. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, slightly husky. Medium body, syrupy/watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Not really my kind of saison...this is a banana-focused Americanized example that doesn’t have much of the old world character I look for. Somewhat ugly concretey phenolics and very little soul, with somewhat syrupy sweetness that lingers too long into the finish. It’s not as bad as a lot of American examples, but it’s still not my thing.
3.5 Draft sample at the source. The beer is a clear yellow with a white head of foam. Sweet, sugary and yeasty notes. Bready and herbal. Medium body and medium carbonation.
3.6 [ bottle ][ 6oz ][ @Tasting ][ $ ? ][ snifter ][ 12.27.15 ] Renaud Saison - puffy white head atop hazy gold, heavy lacing. Metallic, peppery, lightly grassy amidst the frothy body, carbonation too high. Very ester forward, strong malt presence needed, soft citrus throughout.
3.7 Bottle from Whole Foods PM. Hazy gold pour with white head. Nose was yeasty funk, Saazy hops, florals. Tasted yeasty pale malty, with floral notes, hops, white pepper, and some breadiness.
3.7 Bottle. Beermoth, Manchester. Hazy, deep gold. Streams of fine bubbles. Thick, lasting, white head. Nose has sweet, bready malts. Granary toast. Light spice. Some lemon hop. Taste is bready, malty sweet. Light, spicy bitterness. Foamy, massaging mouthfeel. Easy drinking. A tad stodgy sweet, mind.
3.8 clear gold lots of carb. Aroma tang green apple skins, minerals multi vitamins. Tastes unique wet woody moss forest floor, slight funk, stems. some background saison yeast
4.2 750 ml bottle into tulip glass; batch number: 015. Pours lightly hazy golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lemon, orange, apricot, pear, apple, white grape, peppercorn, straw, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, apricot, pear, apple, white grape, peppercorn, straw, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate herbal/yeast spiciness after the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange, apricot, pear, apple, white grape, peppercorn, straw, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from carbonation and yeast spiciness as well. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and fairly grainy/bready/creamy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding saison! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.
3.7 Bue en bouteille de 75cl. Blonde, belle mousse blanche. Belle acidité, armes floraux, houblons bien présents. Bon et puis elle porte mon prénom alors ;)
3.9 This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a hazy yellow color with a one finger white foamy quickly dissipating head that left some white side notes of clinginess. The smell starts off with a dry efferevescent champagne like character rolling over some sweet lemon pulp and a delicate sweet dry grassiness. Grapefruit slides in underneath. The taste moderately balances the crisp sweetness of the dryness to a light wet nurturing aftertaste. Light crisp sweet finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with the dry crispness hitting my tongue appropriately. Overall, nice saison, I’d have again, most likely with food.
3.5 Sampled at The brewery during the Boston Brew tour. Aroma: banana, floral notes, cloves. App: hazy straw with medium white head, good retention, nice lacing. Taste and palate: light to begin body, light sweetness, light bitter finish. Overall: good but would like it more dryer.
3.2 Golden body with a lacey white head. The aroma is of a soapy yeastyness and muddled European hoppiness with a denseness to it. Crystal clean body of cut grass, champagne, and stone fruit. Crisp stone fruit and yeasty finish.
3.7 batch 017 bottle light golden cloudy good head light spicy medium dry not to bitter yeast note Oro torbida buona schiuma piuttosto persistente leggera spezia discreta secchezza amaro presente ma evidente fine erbaceo lievito
3.6 Clear golden with big white head. Grassy lemon herbal saison aroma. Flavor is classic saison, grassy hop herbal flavors with mild lingering saison yeast finish.
3.9 Taster at source light golden pour thin white head. Aromas of yeast funk clove and banana. Taste is crisp and refreshing and quite drinkable. Nice.
3.7 Hazy golden brown, clove aroma and flavor, banana, bright white foam, malty and sweet flavor, very nice palate and bubbly, I suggest slightly more hops to balance
2.7 Towering, dense, quite stable yellowish head over faintly veiled greenish-golden beer. Spicy nose, yeasty, citrus. Rather dull. BItter, some ureum, human sweat, snert, dull grains, spices and herbs. Finishes astringent. Dry; long lasting effects. Nope, that isn’t it - nothing attractive, nothing pleasing. Wouldn’t want to drink this during hard work.
3.8 Bottle from Beergium. Golden color, white head. Bitter taste with citrus, yeast, earthy notes, hops, ripe fruits, toast and grass. Bitter finish with citrus, yeast, hops, toast and grass. Excellent saison.
