Nebraska Reserve Series Barrel Aged HopAnomaly

Nebraska Reserve Series Barrel Aged HopAnomaly

An artful creation which began with our HopAnomaly Belgian-Style IPA, enhanced by a 6 month maturation in French Oak Chardonnay Barrels. This version of Hop God is a fascinating, big, bold Belgian-style Tripel hopped in very high amounts to concentrate citrus, grapefruit and floral aromatics in the nose. The addition of Chardonnay barrel aging adds further dimension and oak tannins to an already wonderfully complex Ale – bringing to mind tropical fruits and peach. We know of nothing that compares – enjoy!

4.0 Hazy deep gold with a lasting and generous white sticky head. Lovely woody Chardonnay nose with light fruity Belgian earthy esters and a gentle apricot/nectarine aroma. Big full and solid flavor that’s Belgian golden malty with fruity esters and a little bit of earthy dusty yeast with a great big smack of white wine barrel complexity. Big and filling and bold. Yet also delicate and layered.

3.8 Shared 750 ml. bottle poured to snifters showing a cloudy, orangey gold color, with a modest layer of soft white foam, and spots of lacing. The nose was ripe fruit, citrus & stone variety, spice, and some woody/barrel hints. Medium bodied, with decent carbonation, the taste added some vinous characteristics, tannic & dry astringency, and some warmth. A nice upgrade to the base brew.
4.1 Bottle. Orange, peach. biscuit malt, dry lemon peel, and hay aroma. Hazy golden yellow with giant white head. Moderately sweet orange/lemon, biscuit malt, and moderately bitter/astringent fresh hay/lemon peel flavor. Nice body. Very good.
3.9 Bottle: Cloudy, amber/orange/gold with a huge, creamy beige head. Sweet oak, white grape, orange aroma. Floral, candied citrus, oak, orange malt flavor. Surprisingly delicate.....creamy, soft and sweet. Excellent.
3.7 750 ml bottle from Trig’s in Wausau, WI, opened a bit below cellar temp and poured into a Maudite glass. Well, a bit of it poured - it opens with a good pop and pours a bit gout of off-white foam, slow-decaying atop a luminous orange-gold, opaque body....I definitely get the chardonnay in the nose, which is vinous, slightly tart and fairly sweet, with a bit of oaky character and a fair amount of fresh doughy yeastiness; citric hops are present but never dominate...body is moderately sweet at the front, yeasty, moving on to lightly dry and quite tart, bitter and somewhat astringent towards the finish, with peppery notes and a fair amount of alcohol, though for me it’s only a touch too boozy and only at the finish - in the body it’s merely warming. Body is supple enough, moderately carbonated - just enough really to keep things light on the palate. I can see how the finish on this one would kill it for some people, it really is on the harsh side, but it isn’t that damaging to me - enough to keep this from getting over a 4 I guess. The description focuses on the hops - which really aren’t all that apparent - and calls it a tripel; I think the current designation of Belgian strong works pretty well. My first beer from this brewery and state.
3.8 A huge foamer.......finally poured a murky orange gold and took 5 minutes to settle.......aroma is earthy wood, grape......taste is initially not impressive. Heads toward sour, but not quite, holds a belgian yeasty earthiness and becomes very astringent, not in a good way.....ignored it for 5 minutes and as it opened up the flavors went together much better, more fruitiness, nice malty backbone, slight grainy finish, continues to open with more and better flavors......advise? Let is open for a few minutes before even taking the first sip.
4.4 750ml bottle [10.6% abv]. Milky, orangey golden colour with huge, thick, creamy, mostly lasting, superbly lacing, white head. Vinous and fruity aroma, minimally bready and biscuity malty background, notes of dried yellow stone fruit, peach and apricot. Taste is initially moderately sweet fruity, minimally bready and biscuity malty, notes of peach, apricot, hints of honey, then the 87 IBUs become more and more noticeable with tremendous bitterness and citrusy as well as floral hop flavours, notes of grapefruit, cautious hints of pineapple, a tropical fruity touch; on top mild vestiges of the Chardonnay BA add woody, tannic, fruity nuances with a touch of silica and white grapes: Creamy texture, gentle, lively carbonation. If I had been sceptical about the balance of an 87 IBU Belgian Strong Ale I must admit now: except for the first sip’s initial hop punch that nearly had effectuated a knock out, the malty backbone is optimally endowed to cope with such a disquieter. Rich, manifold, complex. It’s not only that you find new solo flavour nuances with every sip - new combinations come to mind in addendum (e.g. peach-honey or white grape-sugar powder. Awesome stuff! One of the rarer examples using the PoMo craft beer gadgets (barrel aging, dry hopping) with an absolutely advantageous outcome at any rate [cf. e.g. Anchorage’s ’The Tide and Its Takers Triple’].
3.6 750 ml. Gigantic spongy head finally settles down to a thin disc of cream. Nose is earthy oak with some spicy-sweet white wine, citrus and toffee. Tastes of white wine, apricot, lemon hard candy, wood and a touch of cocoa. Some bubblegum in the long finish. Medium-plus body is soft, lightly astringent and shows a nice balance. .
4.3 Bottle from Binny’s Beverage Depot Glybourn, Chicago. Pours old gold and hazy with a lasting head. Interesting vinous aroma, contrasted by solid hop bitterness. Hints of berries, milk chocolate, wood, vanilla and citrus. Very complex..A wonderful beer.
4.0 Pours a hazy, sediment looking bright orange with thick white head. A strong fruit malt, grape and wine aroma. A sweet and wine like taste with fruits, malts, caramel, citrus and wood. A lingering dry wine and sweet fruit malt aftertaste.
4.0 B-. Pours a murky rust orange color with white head. The dry finish I believe comes from the champaign and I don’t particularly care for it
4.0 Tap at Maricero. Aroma: Orange, mikan Palate: Full-bodied. Flavor: Kumquat with white pine. Subtle wood note. Comment: Served overly cold, so I couldn’t get the most out of it for this tasting. Would drink again.

3.7 Had on draft at Hay Merchant. Citrus, berries, malty, low hop character, grape, wine. Light oxidation in the finish.
3.6 On tap at Omaha Tap House 2013. Light copper color with an off white head and decent lacing. The aroma is hoppy and dank with a bit of grape. Flavor has some floral and herbal hops with even a bit of mango and and some oakiness from the barrel. Medium/full body with moderate carbonation. nice complexity to the beer and interesting.
