Nethergate Augustinian Ale (US Version)

Nethergate Augustinian Ale (US Version)

Bottle Conditioned for maximum flavor and shelf life, Augustinian Ale is one of Britain’s undiscovered treasures.
NOTE: This is ONLY available bottled, almost exclusively for export to the United States. It is an entirely different beer to the one available from cask (and due to be released bottle conditioned) at 4.5% in the UK and elsewhere. The US importer who commissioned the beer liked the name Augustinian which was already in use for a cask bitter, so Nethergate made two different beers with the same name. The cask UK Augustinian Ale has AD1248 in small lettering on the pumpclip and is listed separately here.
Hoppy, bitter and spiced with coriander seeds, this pale ale is, to say the least, very distinctive.

2.9 Bottle 500 ml Aroma honey, rose, candy, orange with spicy end. Softer on top. Appearance amber with haze. Large foamy tanned , creamy top. Thick lace noted. 4- Flavor and Palate : Caramel , orange peel. Spicy , phenolic follow up, hint of vanilla… Mellow with some heat on top end. Late notes of British hop.
2.9 500 ml. bottle. Pours a thick white head, over a hazy, particle laden, light amber (SRM7) body.....nose is light floral, cereal, coriander....taste is light cereal malt to start leading to heavy floral tones with heavy coriander...mouth feel medium, carbonation medium. The coriander, floral tones dominate over much, making this an unbalanced and not particularly good beer which misses its style. BJCP 6/2/12/4/6
3.4 Gold, good carbonation and good head. Clean aroma of light malt - taste is malt and hops bitterness. Surprisingly good and clean.
3.7 Aroma is citrus/fruit, malts and an almost vinous quality. The flavor is citrus/fruit, biscuit malts, spicy and, oddly for a Premium Bitter, almost a thirst quencher Funky for an ESB, pretty good.
2.5 Bottle (US version of the brew). Pours cloudy golden with a weak white head. Sweet yeast and corn aromas. Soft hoppy flavor with a tiny bit of coriander. Short and clean finish. Nice palate, silky but not syrupy. Decent brew, would definetly like to try the authentic cask version though.
3.4 A: The pour is a hazy orange color with a big white head. S: A ton of sweet orange aroma comes through immediately and is surprisingly vibrant and fresh. Not much in the way of any other hop notes, but a good bread malt base. T: The intense orange character continues on the palate. A combination of semi-bitter orange rind and sweet orange flesh along with the sweet and bready malts. M: The carbonation is quite lively and makes this beer nice and refreshing. D: A surprisingly good beer. I found the orange flavors to be very enjoyable and just enough bitterness to keep it from being too sweet.
3.4 The aroma is very nice with coriander, maple syrup, malt, and fruit. The appearance is golden with an orange hue and a large head. The taste is like the aroma with a nice fruity finish. The palate is smooth. Overall a great beer and one I want more of.
3.1 Golden almost strawish pour. Very sweet nose and taste. More than expected. Rated 5/5/04
3.0 Poured from bottle. Wow. Head is huge, long-lasting, and almost of a shaving cream consistency; I had to wait a good ten minutes to get a drink and even then there was foam coming out of the neck of the bottle. Nose is toast and citrus; the main component is a prominent smell of lime (the citrus) -- it smells like I put a lime wedge in it. Color is a hazy dark gold. Tastes of soy, salinity, citrus, toast, and spices; mouthfeel is quick but leaves a long-lasting finish. Just all right.
3.9 1pt 0.9 fl. oz 5.2% ABV. Wow What a head. Wonderful fruity smell. citris, and apples? yep. golden orange color perfect with the aroma and a pillow white head. Floral hops smell complements the citrus aroma. Light Body with excellent malt taste complemented by hops. fizzy, long finish,
3.0 500 ml bottle at the Bayou. Pours a clear gold with a large white head. A funky nose; dry fruits, yeast and sourdough. A spicy fizzy taste, sweet fruit, yeast, bready and fruity. English hops. Nice. Unusual.
3.0 Bottle shared with Doug at The Bayou Appearance: Pours golden with a white head Aroma: Candy, fruits Taste: Sweet malts, candy An OK beer, different but not bad.
2.6 From the 1 pt. 09. fl. oz. bottle marked L-185-03. The pour is a cloudy amber with an extremely puffy, foamy cream-beige head...a good three inches thick. That may be because I drank it after taking it out of my car after a 25 mile drive. The aroma is not very appealing. My first impression was along the lines of paint thinner(!) but also something along the lines of hard liquor like bourbon. The mouthfeel is better than medium. The taste is full of cloves and other spices, citrus, and a reasonable hopped sensation. But it is not the usual Belgian style ale that I am used to. Maybe I should have let it sit for a few more months.
3.2 Bottle courtesy of Fratto. Clouded orange pour with small black suspended sediment. Took several minutes to pour because the head just would not stop! Smells of day old orange peel and some spice. Taste is smooth at first that gradually gets sticky. Flavors of fruit and tropical citrus. Some spice on the finish.
3.2 Bottle from Majestic on Eastchase. Pours like a rotten cider, brown and muddy. Smells delicious like fruit, cinnamon, and candy. Peppery taste with more cinnamon. Just a little hops. Tasty finish with a slight dryness.
2.4 Bottle: Slightly hazy orange with a huge off white head. Citric lemony aroma- seems infected with a light acidity and lemon sorbet qualities. Fizzy prickly carbonation- evidently infected and over carbonated. Flavors of lemon sorbet, lean candied malt undertones, citric lemon middle, followed by an herbal character, fruit roll up like esters, and a minerally mildly bitter finish. Definitely infected, but would probably be decent if it were bottled in proper conditions.
3.2 Pours amber with a huge, fizzy, offwhite head. Nose is malt, bread, and citris. Taste is malt, caramel, and spice. A nice ESB.
2.2 Location: .5 liter bottle from Gilly’s, 7/23/09 Aroma: Yeasty, coriander, citrus, and some other difficult to place spices Appearance: Hazy brownish orange color, big & frothy beige head, decent lacing Flavor: An odd bitterness, weird gingery tang, a bit off, not exactly great Palate: A bit watery, not great Overall Impression: Honestly, I was expecting it to be better from the nose, a bit of a lemon cleaner smell to it, but other then that a decent nose. The taste? Not so much... It’s drinkable I guess, but I won’t be going out of my way to have it again.
2.5 Pours unclear golden-orange with a massive head, I thought the head was going to keep growing & flood my house. Taste is real spicy with the coriander, too much of it. In fact you lose some beer taste with all of it. This beers only quality is it looks like a frothy beer like in cartoons.
1.4 wow. the aroma is of methonol like in a tooth paste. The beer pours cloudy. The taste finishes clean. best used as an expensive mouth wash. And, then I realized this is a british beer. comparing this to other exported english beer, maybe I should rate this beer better!
2.2 16.09 ounce bottle. Pours a murky copper-brown color with a laarge beige head that lasts. Taste is of caramel, smoke, hops, alcohol and malt. Rather bitter. Similar aroma. All right, but I was expecting better. Kind of glad it was on sale.
3.6 Pours a hazy dirty orange with an annoyingly large four fingers of off white puffy foam. After settling the aroma is a nice citrus lemon and fleshy fruits like apricots, yeasty fruitiness, a touch of coriander, ginger. Taste is lightly fruity malt, touches of spice, coriander, and citrus. A bit thin after the enticing aroma.
3.2 Amber in color with a small beige head. Aroma is of fruit, hops and malt. Taste is of coriander citrus and malt.
3.4 2008 Bottle. As a big fan of St. Augustine, I found myself let down by this beer..I just expected much more than it was. Aroma of yeast and light malts, but a flavor of somewhat watery hops. Palate was somewhat unbalanced...overall, not bad...but not great either.
3.3 Bottle from Sun Devil in Mesa, AZ. Golden amber color with a monstrous beige/tan head. Strange fruity/spicey aromas. Medium body with mild carbonation. Flavor is dominated by a flavor or spice. Bottle says coriander. Must have used a lot. Good though. Finish is lightly peppery. Bitter by across the pond standards. I’ll drink it when I can get it.
3.6 Spicey nose (ginger?) hazy apricot, small custard head. Pronounced ginger taste, with a mix of other spices too. Tongue is dancing from this refreshing brew. Great stuff. Thank You Torontoblue.
2.4 Sampled a bottle from the CAMRA beer club. An amber-copper ale with a malty, fruity nose. Some hops and fruits with a slightly smokey and citrus aftertaste but these were very bland. Not horrible, just not enough to keep my taste buds interested.
2.0 Light copper with floaters. Big, long, soapy head. Aroma: Lemon, ginger. Flavor: Ginger, earth, lemon, malts. Ginger finish.
3.1 Taste 8/8 Bottle (?DateL185-03) Looks: Cloudy iced tea. Clinging white head. Aroma: Lemon, caramel malt. Taste: Thin bodied. Lemon and yeast sour. Decent malt. Clean finish. Too much lemon for me(corriander plus yeast sour?).
