3.4Very dark clear ruby brown with a rim head and streaks of lace. Taste is toasted caramel malt that stays true to the malt, growing somewhat through the palate before turning slightly bitter for a smooth, lingering finish. A really solid porter with no pretense or extra business - just the malt and the yeast and the hops. Recommended.
3.6Bottle. Dark ruby brew. Nice dark fruitcake flavours with a smooth lactose sweetness and some subtle roasted chocolate malts. Light/medium body with a light, fresh carbonation. Very drinkable.
3.0Bottle. Pours a dark ruby black color with a longlsting tan head. Has a weak roasted malty chocolate and dark fruit aroma. Roasted malty malty chocolate and dark fruit flavor. Has a roasted malty chocolate and dark fruit finish.
3.7Bottle from B&M. Mahogany ale with fruit cake and malt on the nose. Nice bitter taste with more fruit cake, caramel and raisins. Nice.
3.0Nose is slight coffee, lactose, touch of smoke. Taste is raisin, biscuit, , slight coffee, leather and licorice in the finish. Mouthfeel is a touch thin.
It’s OK.
3.2Pivo s dobrym poměrem hořkosti a osvěžujici ovocné chuti, jen s lehce pokulhávájicim aroma.
3.5Brown beer, more like one of those maly Baltic Porters. Nose is fruity, with raisins, plums and dates, with fillberts, chocolate and roasted malts. The flavour is equally fruity and nutty. Medium to thin bodied, with almost excessive carbonation and a certain a(d)stringency.
3.6Serving: 500 ml. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a medium to dark brown with a small, light tan head. Lighter color than I was expecting. The nose has a bit of dough and light earth. Neither sweet nor bitter on the palate. Very even keeled with notes of bread, light caramel, molasses, earthy hops, and a hint of leather. Light to medium body with a fairly dry finish. Just short of chalky on the mouthfeel. Tasty.
3.3500ml bottle. Pours a deep dark brown color with a fluffy tan head that has good retention. Aromas of roasted coffee and chocolate dominate. Flavor is sweet chocolate, roasted barley, some espresso notes. Finish leaves a lingering bitterness. Finish is clean and crisp. Thin body with moderate carbonation.
3.7Appearance: Dark ruby/brown with cm thick ivory/white head.
Aroma: Malty, bready/biscuity, yoghurty, note of roastiness and hint of coffee.
Taste: Low/medium sweetness, medium bitterness, low/medium sourness. Strong maltiness, note of coffee and hoppy.
Palate: Thick texture, medium body, average/lively carbonation and lingering astringent finish.
Comments: Very nice. Left a glass lace.
3.3500 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained ivory head, over a clear brown (SRM 30) body.....nose is cocoa, light coffee, hints of raisin.....taste is light chocolate, light coffee, hints of raisin, finishing with a moderate hop bitterness...mouth feel light of medium, slight astringent, carbonation adds tingle. This is a classic Brown Porter and is used by the BJCP as a classic example of the style. BJCP 9/3/16/5/8
3.8Aroma of roasted malts with notes of chocolate, and fruit. Pours a cloudy brown with rapidly dissipating tan head and minimal lacing. The taste is roasted malt, and raisin with notes of toffee and chocolate. Medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, an excellent example of a British porter. Would drink again.
3.6This beer pours with a thick and creamy white head supported by a deep rich dark malty beer. There is a potent caramel and roast aroma which compliment the carefully balanced blend of chocolate and caramel finished with a subtle hint of smoked malts. A very smooth beer completely inoffensive and its high alcohol content does not overpower the flavours and aromas. A really top class porter style beer.
3.1Bottle from B&M Bargains; dark brown pour with substantial beige head, roast malt aroma, quite bready malt taste I expect more coffee tones from a porter, slightly nutty some caramel.
3.3Poured from 500 ml bottle.
Opaque black brown with decent head that gradually settled. Excellent lacing.
Aroma: Light toffee and coffee aroma with hints of chocolate and raisins. Rather faint aroma over all.
Taste: Malt with notes of chocolate, coffee and toffee. Mild, but rather pleasant.
Medium body and carbonation.
Easy to drink. Pleasant beer overall, but nothing special.
4.0Poured from a 500ml bottle (new and better label), with a starting temperature about 55F, into a St. Bernardus snifter. It pours dark mahogany brown/black in color with a moderate size, soapy head. Ample sticky tan lacing is left on the glass.
Smell: A very appealing and lightly sweet medium roasted malt aroma with plenty of raisin and hints of hops and toffee,
Taste [8.5]: also a nice mix of dark fruits and medium malts, with hints of vanilla, coffee (in finish), roasted nuts, caramel and toffee. Long-lasting and exceptionally pleasant aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: very smooth but a bit too thin. Good, low carbonation level.
O: A very good English porter with exceptional taste and aroma.
3.123.03.2013. 0,5l Bottle. Thanks to Gunnar! Black colour with white head. Aroma of dark malts. Medium bitterness and medium body. Dry, but not like a desert. Very soft porter with mild bitterness and soft carbonation. Aftertaste is medium bitter, with soft aromas of dark malts.
3.6Thought this was an appropriate choice for Mummy’s Day. Another forum for Bish? Really enjoyed this, if not the howlers I witnessed on the box. Just the right amount of chocolate undertone, it’s that classic 1750s taste we’ve all grown to love.
3.3500ml bottle. pours very dark brown, almost black with small dark head that disappears after 30 seconds. aroma is of molassess and coffee. full mouth feel with no carbonation. bitter and very nice.
4.0Bottle from myBrewerytap. Pours very dark ruby with a creamy tanned head. Aroma is rich malty, some dark fruits, coffee and chocolate, weak roast. Taste is rich malty, lots of chocolate and moderate roasted coffee, and a decent hoppy bite at the far end, very good porter

Chocolate-vanilla aroma, slight tangy dark fruit notes.
Taste is malty, creamy, chocolate-vanilla...
Light...great flavour.
3.7Bottle from b&m, Chester-le-Street. A very dark brown beer with ruby red highlights. Rich chocolate, red fruit and vanilla flavours make way for malty and Christmas cake notes on the finish.
3.3Bottle. Pours deep, dark brown with thin creamy beige head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, light coffee, dates, plums, light earthy hops, and faint woody notes. Flavor is roast malt forward with supporting dark fruit esters, faint earthy hops, faint ash, and light woody notes; dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation.
3.3Bottle. Pours clear black with a medium, frothy off-white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is light chocolate and roast malt, dates and plums with faint earthy hops. Flavor is malt dominant with dark fruity esters, faint hops and bitterness and a dry finish. Medium-light body and medium carbonation.
3.1Poured a very dark brown color with a thin light-tan head. Aroma has lots of cream and vanilla with some cheese and yeast. Some caramel and nuts. Taste has good caramel flavors with nuts at first. A little thin-bodied towards the finish. Finish is a little bit tart and bitter with caramel. Decent.
3.5A full flavoured beer that is bittersweet and has some hints of chocolate malts.
3.5Bottled.
Roasted, malty taste, rather traditional style with a light smoky touch. The malt carries a good deal of fruitiness, giving the beer a good backbone. Very nice. (2009-03-02)
3.5500ml bottle. Pours very dark brown with thick darkish head. Aroma of malt and smoke. Slight sweetness, which is not overpowering, leads to toffee, malt, toast and yeast followed by a smooth, mildly bitter coffee finish. A well balanced and enjoyable dark water ale.
3.1Bottle @ Home. Pours dark brown with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, candy sugar, cocao. Flavor is malts, coffee, dark chocolate, candy sugar. Thin to medium body, soft carbonation, easy drinking. 040910
3.6Deep dark brown coloured body, about 75% opaque with a very nice ruby tint when held up to a light, with a centimetre tall tan creamy head. Aroma of pale malt, roast, coffee, nuts, cream and a hint of caramel and raisins. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasty malt flavour at first with a very nice caramel and toffee flavour followed by some lighter fruits and prune flavours. Aftertaste shows very well with some good malt complexity and a sweet, yet slightly bitter nuttiness. Overall, a nice porter with some good malt notes, none cloying and a bit of complexity on the finish. Not my favourite, but not a bad beer at all. I sampled this pint bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Miami Beach, Florida on 18-September-2012 for US$4.99 sampled at home in Washington on 12-November-2012.
