3.5 On draft at Yogis in Bloomington. Pours golden amber with a thin white head and good lacing. The ABV is hidden well with the strong hop aroma and flavor. A bit of carmel taste which isn't my favorite character for an IPA. Overall not bad.
3.6 Pretty good beer. No aroma to really speak of. Really smooth tasting though for an imperial.
2.8 Strange beer; almost no hop nose at all. Starts like an Amber but finishes very bitter. Interesting beer, but definitely not what I'd consider a DIPA.
3.3 My Bottom Line: This floral and resinous strong ale is engulfed in honeyed caramel before a disproportionate hop bitterness takes hold of the palate. Further Personal Perceptions: -A thin slice of foam stays atop the cloudy dark amber. -The carbonation is quite soft, which makes the body feel heavier. -The mouthfeel is a tad too oily sweet for my tastes. -Malt and hop flavours could be better defined. -This is certainly flavourful, but it remains a simple and hefty strong ale. -The Imperial India Pale Ale mention on the label is disappointing… Bottle.
3.8 Bomber from Total Wine in Orlando, FL. Pours translucent copper/amber with minimal head. Smells rather malty. Near full bodied. It’s rather malty and the hops are more floral than anything. Good drink, but clearly not NW style. Works for me.
3.7 Hazy copper pour with an off-white head. The aroma is mostly pine and herbal hops. It has a medium body with smooth texture and average carbonation. The taste is bitter with a long finish.
2.9 Pours a dark orange/light red with a nice two finger white head leaving good lacing down the glass. Smells of rich caramel malt. Not a whole lot of hops in the nose. Starts off a little caramel, but rounds into an astringent piney bitterness lingering on the tongue. Mouthfeel is good. A little bit sticky with good carbonation, but not cloying. Just an ok beer. Nothing really stands out about it, but nothing is terribly poor either.
3.4 22 oz bought at the keg in Indiana. Darker imperial IPA than I'm used to. Taste the booze bite. Not a huge fan.
2.7 Orange with a white head. The aroma is full of toffee, grass and pine. The flavor is a bit more complex. I get some toffee, biscuit and caramel malts, as well as some grass from the hops and a medium amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.5 2/19/2011: NABC Hoptimus Imperial IPA... Aroma: Citrus (slight grapefruit) and light toffee maltiness. Appearance: Bright copper color; transparent liquid with a dense beige crown. Flavor: Orange, grapefruit, and a splash of pineapple; moderate bitterness. Palate: Medium to medium-full body; silky smooth texture. Overall: Good, but seems a bit weak for my taste. Draught sample (10.7% ABV; 100 IBU) at New Albanian Brewing Company in New Albany, IN. Rating #154 for this beer.
3.2 Bottlepour copper color. Nosedank hop and molasses. Taste similar, dank up front, soem sweetness in early palate, followed by a weird wood or grilled flavor. Bitter finish.
3.3 Press a hazy yellow gold from the bottle with thin ring of off-white lacy head. Aroma is big caramel malt and booze, slight earthy hop. Taste is a little more balanced with some piney notes, but still a little sweet. Meh.
3.7 Bomber - pours pale amber with ivory head. Nose is caramel, a wild field, and a bunch of indiscernible goodies akin to grapefruit. Flavor adds citrus colony that just got paint stripped. Dry. Bitter. Fruity aftertaste. I was hoping for a more pronounced malty backbone, but there wasn’t much there. A good thing I didn’t rate this three years ago when I was at the brewery; I would have hated it. Now, it is passable for a dipa.
3.6 Clear-bodied, deep, bold orange in color with a bright white head. The aroma is really wacky. It’s sweet and sticky, but not because of the hops. It’s residual sugars... and somehow, without crystal sugars. Something about this smells like a vegetable or root of some sort. Beets? No! Radishes! Weird, but good. In the mouth it’s incredibly unique. I’m not sure what hops were used, but this is really distinctive. Nice, and I would never guess this has such a high level of IBUs. I’m doubting it’s actually that high. Eh... I had higher expectations.
3.1 Bomber. Maltier than I expected. Nothing that stood out as memorable. Fairly carbonated though
3.0 Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of roasted and caramel, light orange and dough for the yeast, with a hint of date in the background. Head is large, creamy turning rocky, slightly off-white with excellent lacing and good legs and is mostly lasting. Color is crystal clear dark amber. Flavor starts moderately sweet and finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, a bit syrupy and has a soft carbonation and a moderately astringent finish. A little more malt dominant than most DIPAs and it lacks balance in the flavor. Twas a little disappointing.
3.1 These New Albanian bombers just recently started showing up in Florida. An amber pour generating a thin white head that leaves spotty lacing. The scent is very malty; lots of caramel and dough and really no sign of hops. Sweet and malty flavor, but fortunately, there’s more hop presence in here than what was picked up in the aroma. Based on that, I was preparing for a malt bomb. The hops are orangey and a bit resinous. The finish is dry with some sharp bitterness. Pretty easy going down, with hardly any alcohol burn. Lacks substance. A touch too sweet but overall fairly balanced. This probably won’t be too memorable but it was decent enough.
3.5 Bottle (bomber) at Total Wine in Boca Raton, FL. Tulip. Pours an amber-orange pour with medium white head. Thick lacing. Aroma is odd. Sort of a muddy malt smell with possibly basil or wood. Taste is pretty heavy malts, caramel. wood, slight floral hops and yeasts. High alcohol is masked well through balancing. Bitter finish. Overall I like it.
2.4 Bottle. Pours reddish amber with white head. Nose and taste of basil, caramel candy, resin, citrus peel medicine and cherry throat lozenges. Medium body.
2.9 Draft at brewhouse. Hazy golden pour with white head. Spice and citrus hops aromas. Light citrus almost pinesol flavors, sweet meals. Flavors seem of to me.
3.0 oh you transformers nerds, just stop .. . deep gold .. . mild foam, light spots of white lacing .. . mild wrenched pine and dried leaves .. . very soft carbonation, body is pretty light too .. not all that enjoyable, well made just not enjoyable .. . . where’s my damn picnic basket??
2.9 bomber. copper pour with a thin off white and frothy retention. aroma is butterscotch, sweet candied malts, plum. tastes are pine, overly spicy, earthy, alcohol, soap... I wonder if this has gone bad. got it at fermentation bottle shop, so decent chance - everything is dusty there. anyway - didn’t like. 5.8
2.2 Basil/citrus aroma. Flavor has an ample medium to high bitterness, but it jsut sucks, soy sauce, metal, and caramel. Shit.
3.9 22oz bomber pours deep slightly hazy gold with a nice looking tan head of foam. The aroma offers up tangerine, grapefruit, some apricot and a sweet cantaloupe like sensation. The taste is resiny citrus that is sweetened up by some malts. It pretty much maintains the same rich and deep sweetened citrus hop notes and bitter hop resin right into the finish.
3.6 Burned orange color, moslty a white head. Lots of floral hops, citrus, sweet malt, oranges, finishes a tad dry on the notes.
2.7 22 oz. bottle, sent from StFun (thanks Josh), pours a cloudy opaque orangey amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out woody resinous hops, pine, some metallic undertones, and some peppery toasted malt. Flavour brings out shitloads of peppery hops, a pronounced spiciness, metallic notes, wood, and more pepper. Did I mention there is pepper in here? Not sure what the hell this is supposed to be, but it’s dominated by pepper and metallic notes. Not very good.
3.9 A nice golden orange pour, citrusy and hoppy with some grassy notes. It's pretty good.
4.3 Pours orange and surprisingly crisp and clear for an Imperial IPA. Thin layer of a white head floats atop. The aroma is all fresh, citrusy hops. The punch is not as big as expected from a 100 IBU beer, but you know it’s an IPA. Loads of citrus and grassy hops give it a very fresh, summery flavor. Enough sweetness from the malt to cut through. With no bottling date, there is no way to know how old it is. The flavor is great, but I’m wondering if the hops have lost some potency. Oh, and it clocks in pushing 11% ABV. Even if this is a little old, it’s really tasty. Lots of hops, enough malt to give it some balance, and deceptively smooth for its ABV and IBU. I’ll definitely do this again!
3.2 Bomber. Pours dark reddish orange with a thin off white head. Aroma isn’t all that hoppy, to be honest it smells belgian-ish, sweet malt. Taste has more hop punch but not what i look for in a dipa, and i swear they are using a belgian yeast in this and i think its fuckin up the flavor, the spice notes are interfering too much with the hops I’m wanting to taste. Palate is a bit thin. ok beer, bad dipa.
3.3 Not the worst of DIPAs, but too one-dimensional for me. Hoptimus is sweet and grapefruit, and then not much else. Little cloying actually. Has some nice elements, but can’t rate beyond a solid B. 1st try from New Albanian / 220z bottle.
