New Belgium 2° Below Winter Ale

New Belgium 2° Below Winter Ale

Pull on your wool socks and crack open a 2° Below Ale. This tasty winter warmer started life as a small batch beer brewed for the Al Johnson Uphill Downhill – a telemark ski race in Crested Butte, Colorado. The Uphill Downhill celebrates the exploits of Al Johnson, letter carrier extraordinaire, who delivered mail by ski in the late 1800’s. Dry hopping during fermentation creates a floral nose with a hint of pepper and spicy, subtle undertones. 2° Below provides a bright, hoppy palate and a cheery warm afterglow.

3.4 Bready malty base with a bit of hop balance. Some slight spice, and an almost lagerish hop funk. Has a good amount of body and overall a descent winter beer, but the lagerish funk hops get to me the more I drink.
3.3 Bright citrus notes and caramel through the aroma, pours a clear amber with no head. Slightly sweet caramel notes, with some biscuit mixed in as well. Earthy hops, with very little bitterness. A solid and drinkable winter ale.
3.6 Originally rated on 1/10/08. I am not normally a big fan of winter brews, but the N.B. 2 below is pretty decent. Smiliar to an IPA with its hops, slightly dry and citrus hints. pours a nice copper color with a good head which lasts until the end.
3.1 Old rating. Red brown color. Big sweet and spice, malt, citrus bite, new Belgium yeasty taste. Okay winter beer.
4.0 Very rich, spicy, caramel flavor. Great for taking home and relaxing. Something to sip on after dinner
3.4 12oz purchased at Whole Foods for about $1.40... enjoyed from my FW tulip. Listening to John Kelley High Desert Soundsystem. CRYSTAL clear orange lite amber.... very nice color... decent head but goes away quickly. Very distinctive nose, I swear I could pick it out of a lineup. Toasted grains are all over the place ... still hops are there, but are definitely not of the American varieties... noble hops all the way here ... they just don’t work well together. Flavor is aromatic and toasted malt (Victory??) ... clean very vibrant noble hop balance. The malt flavor is like chewing on a small teaspoon of brewers biscuit malt... the hops really muddy it up. Edit: The taste is also very earthy, like a cigar humidor, sorta reminds me of a fresh hop brew... I just can’t put my finger/palate on it. Wow.... this is a back and forth review... I have, would and will buy this beer again here and there just because it is soooo freaking different ... and damnit, I want to figure it out.
3.4 Certain brewers have a signature taste, don't know what it is, but u can always tell u are drinking one of theirs and New Belgium is one of those. This beer frankly is not an ESB as advertised IMHO. Don't know what it is honestly but it is a good tasting easy drinking ale, a variation of fat tire in my opinion and that is not a bad thing but definitely not an ESB.
2.9 12 oz bottle. Gold pour with white head. Minimal aroma. Taste is dry, bitter hops. Pine and citrus. Kinda plain and boring. Not bad but could be better. OK
3.3 Bottle - fair size foamy head, clear light copper color, pretty well balanced with mildly sweet biscuity malt and earthy hops, good overall
3.4 ウインターエール 軽やかなポップの香り
3.2 Pretty good beer. Ive never had a White IPA before this and it’s pretty much what I expected, smooth, tasty and easy to drink. I really enjoy the after taste, kind of citrus/pine/cream flavor.
4.2 well balanced ale. Aromas of spices, and long lasting flavour. Quite enjoyable.
3.1 Nice easy drinking malty and caramely beer with some herbal and citrus hop character.
2.9 Bottle. Pours clear copper with a medium sized white head. The aroma has toasted malt, happy floral notes. The taste has a light bitterness, a sweet malty finish. Odd.
3.1 From the bottle the aroma is a little hops, taste is sweet of the very front but the overall flavor is similar to an amber ale, finish is wheat and roasted finish
3.6 Backlog. From bottle in 2007. Aroma of flowery hops, with aromatic hops, caramel malts and some fruit and herbs retronasal. Flavor is light caramel malts, but hardly sweet. Medium bodied. Moderate bitter finish.
2.4 Light hop-based aroma. This beer is pretty light even though it is an IPA. Also very thin composition. Color is golden but more yellow than auburn. Zero head and almost no carbonation. Not the worst IPA but also not the best. Worth skipping this beer for another one of New Belgium's products.
3.3 Pours a bright orange with a lumpy foam head. Decent carbonation with a light malt aroma. Biscuity malt taste with light hops spice. Clean palate feel.
3.0 Bottle, dark gold pour, white head, nose is caramel, taste is bitter, a little soapy, some nuts, meh
3.6 Strong hoppy cold weather seasonal, not quite as good as the Accumulation, but still a great winter drinker
4.0 Mmm! A lovely white IPA. Big citrus flavours with a nice blend of spices and fresh flavours. A new holiday favourite!
3.0 Bottle->nonic. Bright copper with big frothy white head. A: very hop forward, with some biscuit and mild malt. T: caramel malt quickly overtaken by pine and floral hops. Aftertaste is bitter and somewhat spicy. Taste is eh.
3.3 Bottle pour. Clear copper with a large off white foamy head. Nice mix of malt and hoppy aromas with a strong pepper aroma. Creamy medium body. Biscuit, pepper, and light toast flavor. The only big downfall is the flavor fades quickly.
3.1 From bottle to chalice. Slight spice and minimal perfume. Clear and copper with white head. Taste is spice and moderate bittering.
3.5 had the privelage of tap and bottled versions this winter. both solid, if not extraordinary. great malt/hop balance with a hint of spice and pepper, medium bodied goodness. caramel and hops in the finish."
2.4 Woody but yet has a better note with a sweet finish ,and goes good with a good stake like a thick prime rib
4.0 Pours a darker clear golden color with white head. Citrus, floral and biscuit notes on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes clean. Very nicely done.
3.2 A delicious beer that is very crisp and refreshing. Nice flavor on the initial sip, but no weird aftertaste that lingers on the tounge.
3.6 Pours a pretty gold with a medium sized white head that quickly dissipates. Nose is of hops. Fairly creamy on the palate, the taste is hop forward with a malt backbone. Slightly bitter on the finish. Hopheads will like this one. Pairs well with chicken off the grill.
3.1 12 oz bottle poured into glass. Champagne like mouth feel and taste is a lil sweet then very hoppy. Lil lacing if any.. Smell of alcohol and sweetness.
