New Belgium La Folie

New Belgium La Folie

La Folie, French for "the folly," is a beer steeped in New Belgium brewing tradition. This wood-aged, sour brown spends one to three years in big, oak barrels, known as foeders. And when the beer finally hits the glass, La Folie is sharp and sour, full of green apple, cherry, and plum-skin notes. Pouring a deep mahogany, the mouthfeel will get you puckering while the smooth finish will get you smiling. Not a beer for the timid, La Folie is a sour delight that will turn your tongue on its head. Find out why it’s considered one of the best sour beers around.

3.7 Flavor explosion! Pours brown w/out a head or lacing. The aroma is robust w/ dark fruit. The flavor is loaded w/ dark fruit as well. It has just a brief hint of pungency upfront & it does finish rather smooth. Very tasty & quite unique! This is damn good!
5.0 Trying a 2015 aged .....this is absolutely delicious tart and sweet cherries muddled with dark fruits...aged well!
3.8 On tap at Fakin Zagreb. Almost brown coloured, medium sized beige head, spices, light cherries and wood in the nose. Light acidic and acetic taste with notes of dried fruits, berries and wood. Sourish finish. Quite nice.

4.7 Tasting as part of RateBeer 100 for 100 Good Beer Week 2019 event... loved it!
4.3 Musty lime with persistent carbonation, more dandelion bitter than sour, inexplicably dark with orange creamsicle foam. Quite the accomplishment. Had again on tap at Flying Saucer and again amazing.
3.7 Reddish brown color with a sour, dark fruit and woody aroma. Flavor is sour acid, overripe plum or dark fruit with a little wood taste. Nice sour ale.
4.1 on tap at brewery in Fort Collins. What an outstanding beer! Thought I'd had before, but this beer was so very good!
4.1 Deep crimson in colour, strong notes and cherry and plum, a strong tart initial taste which then very quickly balanced out
3.9 Confirmed 3-13-19 Rerate DIA NB Hub 3-23-16 Previously rated at 4.4
4.0 22 oz bottle 2016. Pours reddish-brown with tall, long-lasting, foamy off-white head. Nose is of funky yeast, caramel malt and red fruit. Body is full and tangy. Taste is very sour, funky yeast, caramel and red fruit. Finish is long and sour. Nice sour brew.
4.2 From a bomber. 2016 vintage. Nice dark tawny color almost opaque. Lingering dry finish. Definite notes of sour cherry, with a touch of sour apple. Nicely balanced with sweet malt. Extremely quaffable and enjoyable. Wonderful sour.
4.0 (Bottle) Reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Fruity, slightly sourish nose with cherries, caramel, oak wood, citrus, brown sugar, vanilla and a touch of balsamic vinegar. Fruity, tart taste with notes of caramel, balsamic vinegar, oak wood, green apples, citrus, chocolate, sour cherries, blackberries and a finish with a fresh acidity and low bitterness. Medium body, mainly dry. Really tasty and well balanced, with a fresh acidity and well rounded mouthfeel. Excellent beer.
4.1 12.7floz bottle, no date, $9, large stem glass. Two fingers worth of head quickly fades to a ring atop a reddish-brown body. Opens with a woodsy, plum aroma, and has these notes with vinegary bite on the palate. Tasty, and sophisticated.
3.3 Found on tap at brewery in Asheville, NC. Appealing dark brown color with medium head. Strong sour green apple flavoring.
4.5 Keg at BeaverFest. Vague vinous aroma. Amber Thin beige head.. Supe sour. Thin. Slick. Average carbonation. Astringent finish. My notes were brief but I scored it 4.5 so must have been impressed!

4.0 A 22 fl. oz. bomber, 2016 vintage, bottled on 19th December 2015. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass. It was a dark reddish brown colour with a two fingered creamy tanned head that had decent retention and left some nice lacing. Aromas of tart cherry, vinous, wine with hints of plum, raisin, oak and vinegar. Tastes tart, sour, cherry, plum, vinous and oak with hints of green apple. A good lasting sour finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall a nice and great tasting Oud Bruin.
3.7 Draught @ Carwyn Cellars Beautiful red amber body, dense off-white cream. Aroma is woody, cherry pip, horse/stable, toast, grainy bread. Medium weight, tannic, building acidity. Lots of Old world vinous red wine flavours - like a Barolo almost - rustic, earthy, red fruits, bitter, dark cherry, toffee, savoury character lingering. Tremendous!
4.0 Pours dark brown with a thick light tan head. Nose is tart sweet caramel, cherry, dark fruit. Taste is lighter than the nose, caramel, vinegar, cherry pie filling. Dry. Nice
4.3 2017. Quite dark clear brown with thin tan head. Sherbet sour aroma with some sweet malts. Very sour taste, very enjoyable but a real lip smacker. Lots of vanilla barrel hidden behind that sourness. Fantastic. Extremely drinkable and satisfying.
4.9 Suverän suröl👍
3.4 2016 vintage. Bottle (1 pint, 6 oz). Pours opaque, dark reddish-brown with minimal, light beige head. Nose of tart cherries and plums. Tart plums upfront followed by chocolate notes and cherries. Effervescent finish.
3.9 Fat @ NK Ölbar. Rödbrun med ett smutsvitt skum. Dofter och smaker av körsbär, trä, äpplen ännu inte helt mogna, torkad frukt och i smaken allena surt rödvin. Torr munkänsla.
4.6 2017 vintage. Deep brown, slight reddish hue. No head. Classic Flanders brown aroma sour vinegar, earthy, fragrant wine. Immediately massive sourness, didn't see it coming. Afterwards the oak or wood barrel or foeder comes through nicely. There's is definitely a fruitiness to it, but I can't say Im getting cherries and apples, as advertised. A few sips in and I got some sweet malt in the finish which really shows how complex this is. Ive read about this one and how it's such a big deal and I have to agree. It's the best "sour brown" I can recall. Ive had about a dozen of NB's more easily accessible beers and found them all to be total crap, so it's nice to finally try this and see the quality side of this likeable brewery. American classic and worth the hunt!
3.9 Flaska från SB. Vintage 2017.
3.7 Pours semi-opaque ruby red-brown with a 1-finger bone-colored head that was gone quickly. Tart cherry aroma with a touch of wood mixed in. Medium body, with a touch of syrupy character. Long finish with a tart dryness. Tart cherry flavor mixed with a wood note. Some yeast funk at the back.
4.6 650 bomber bottle at home, thanks Jef! 2014 vintage I think. Reddish brownish with tan head. Aroma and taste are sour and complex, fruit, plums, cherries, caramel, acetic, lactic, woody notes and apples leading to a sour fruity finish.
