New Belgium Lips of Faith - Coconut Curry Hefeweizen

New Belgium Lips of Faith - Coconut Curry Hefeweizen

Coconut Curry Hefeweizen has been pouring down the history of American Home Brewing for many years, from the legendary Charlie Papazian to the 2010 National Homebrewer, Remi Bonnart. The latter helped New Belgium brew this hazy, straw-colored gem to life. The aroma is bold and big with coconut and curry tones and a hint of banana from the hefe yeast. With a vast spice list of cinnamon, coriander, fenugreek, ginger, kaffir lime, and cayenne pepper this beer carries a bit of heat but the alcohol soothes the finish. Coconut Curry Hefe will leave an inquisitive smile on the drinker’s mug.

3.4 The aroma is very sweet with coconut yeast and curry spice. The appearance is hazy gold with floaters and a thin head. The taste is like the aroma with a touch of bubblegum. The palate is average. Overall really interesting and a great idea.
3.8 Both the flavors that are on the bottle are very dominate in this beer, they are in the foreground and not the background. The curry is very spicy and lingers well after. This would be perfect with a great meal
3.5 Bottle at Söder om Småland. Hazy golden colored with a small white head. Sweet and fruity aroma of exotic fruits and coconuts. Sweet and fruity flavor of exotic fruits and coconuts with notes of hops. Sweet and hoppy finish.
4.2 Bomber poured into my New Belgium globe glass. Pours a hazy yellowish orange color with a thick white head that leaves great lacing. Smells of coconut, curry, wheat and slight cereal notes. Tastes of the same things in the smell. Mouthfeel is medium and creamy with great carbonation. Wow, it’s like Indian food in a bottle mixed with a hefeweizen, one of my favorites in the Lips of Faith series. Hopefully they brew this again.
3.5 Cloudy amber/gold color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of wheat, coconut, some vanilla, & light curry; Flavor of sweet malt/wheat, yeast, caramel, some clove, and spice; Somewhat hot finish; Different - pretty decent.
2.7 Bottled. Not a fan in general of hefes so take the following with a grain of salt. Pours hazy gold with a small head. Aroma is a crazy mess of curry powder, coconut, banana and bubblegum. Flavor starts sweet and unlike good Thai food the spices seem to fight each other rather than work together. Finishes with lots of carbonation.
2.5 Cloudy tan. Thin head. Aroma is so full of phenols I can’t smell anything else. Sweet, yeasty, a hint of tartness, cinnamon and just a whack of phenols. The mouthfeel also has a bit of fattiness from the coconut.
3.4 22 oz bottle. I has the aromas of coconut, curry, bananas, wheat & vanilla. It pours a hazy yellow with almost no head. It tastes like it’s description, a hefeweizen with curry, coconut and a lot of other spices. I have to say that a bomber of this is real nice. I’m really glad that I didn’t brew this and have over 2 cases of it to drink. The flavors do seem to work together pretty well.
3.7 Bottle. Moderate cereal for the malt, light to moderate orange for the hops, dough and broth for yeast, with coconut milk and maharajah curry powder. Head is small, frothy and chunky, white with a spot or two of lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy medium yellow/amber with a thick amount of tiny bits swimming and floating. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, creamy, with a soft to lively carbonation, and finishes with some spicy heat. Not a big fan of beers with off the wall adjuncts in it, but this one definitely works for me.
3.5 Bottle. Hazy deep golden liquid with medium white head. Aroma of chili, coconut, clove, banana, bubblegum and perfume. Taste is dry to light sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of chili, banana, bubblegum, pepparkaka, coconut and grain. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Much better than I thought.
1.8 Linköping Beer Expo 2014. Cloudy golden beer with a small offwhite head. Spicy curry aroma, caramel, mint, floral, some chocolate. Mont flavor, curry, coconut, lots of thai food. Extremely odd and not that good.
3.9 Cloudy yellow color. Smells of dough and Indian food. Coconut first then the curry comes over it then it blends to the fade. Weird but good, really lives up to the name.
3.0 On tap at Toronado. Pour is hazy golden with a small off-white head. Aroma and flavor are both of spice, coconut milk, bananas, and candi sugar. Sweet and spicy, interesting, but not something I’d go back to.
3.7 bottle. Deep golden with one finger head. Sweet coconut is quite prominent. The curry is very forward, but mild in heat. I suspect there’s no actual cinnamon, but I catch something cinnamon-like. It’s very good, but I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to have it again
3.0 Pours a hazy orange with a thin white head. Aroma of coconut, curry, ginger, bananas. Taste is sweet, coconut, curry, wheat and ginger. Not a great blend of flavors. Hard to drink.
2.9 Glass from whoever was at the table before us. Drinking it forward. Light, hazy pour with a white head. Aroma is spicy. Well, yeah, it has curry. It smells spicy. Vanilla, wood, and grain. Taste is still spicy, wood, and weirdness.
2.7 Tap at Bearded Lady. This glass was actually left on our table from the previous owner. Pours a cloudy yellow orange color. Flavor is spicy, hot, warm, Indian, and woody. Super woodyness.
3.0 On tap at Toronado in February 2014. I just had to try this one. A bit hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma and taste of curry, wheat, banana, coconut and light spices. Weird but still drinkable.
3.5 Hef and curry aroma. Pours a cloudy yellow/orange with a thick white head and good lacing. Very intense spices and light body with some back end heat from the curry different
3.4 Comp from Eureka -- thanks, Danny! Light hazy pour, fluffy white head. This is exactly what it purports to be -- coconut curry beer. Yellow curry with coconut milk, the kaffir lime, a very slight bit of heat, nothing like some of the chile pepper beers out there. No sign of the 8%; I thought it was 5, thus remarkably drinkable. This one never makes it beyond novelty act status, but I don’t think it aims for anything else and so I guess it hits its mark.
3.0 11 ounce pour - $5.00 at Taco Mac in Crabapple, Georgia. Appearance: Dark, dull orange-gold body, a bit hazy, with a slim, white head cap. Smell: A beer that definitely delivers on its branded namesake promise, coconut and curry. Sweetish, plump malted wheat, additional notes of banana. Taste: Sugary upfront angle (giving a hint of cream soda from time to time), then, coconut, fenugreek -- oh, heck, all the varied curry notes, and finally the ’nana from the full-on wheat inclusion. Additional slight warming quality from the alcohol content pairs with the heat from the curry blend. Slow finish with sustained sweetness and more of the coconut and curry. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Overall: Sure, it’s a different, interesting combination, but, I would have preferred a slimmed down version in something less viscous and more effervescent. As it stands, it’s heavy and heavy-handed in its aspects and not the easiest beer to get down.
3.8 Smells like cherry cough syrup plus Respitonic. Tastes like watered down Respitonic. Holy shit! Most people will hate that, but I love it. Not as good as Respitonic, but damn.
3.8 Vegetal onions, pineapple, and maybe coconut smell. Cloudy golden, thick head, nice lacing. Medium body, alcohol, not really noticeable. Curry is evident on the palate, but not at all unpleasant. A hint of saffron as well, but that may just as assoication with the lime that is actually in it, which becomes more evident upon warming. There is an underlying heat that gives this beer yet another dimension, again, surprisingly good. Very interesting and bonus points for thinking outside the box. I would drink this again.
3.3 tap a few months ago - Curry? How incredibly odd. It pours hazy yellow-orange with a small lingering head. It definitely smells like curry. The taste is very sweet with obvious curry and some other mild spice. The coconut is detectable but mild. The finish has lingering curry spice and is still sweet. It’s certainly original.
3.1 Poured a pale gold color with aromas of curry and spices. Light coconut but very feint. Flavors are the same spice and curry and heat with some booze light coconut as it warmed just not my type of thing.
3.7 Bottle:   Dirty orangish straw, thick, hazy, moderate foamy white head, nice lacing.   Whoa, a spicy sort of coconut and curry on the nose.   Smells like lunch... somewhat odd, but interesting.   Very interesting, similar on the tongue, some coconut, curry (yellow perhaps), with some soft ginger and pepper spices.   This one is weird, but weird in a great way.   Unique, to the point I keep sipping it.   This works, I don’t know how, but it works.   A bit sweet, spicy, with a little tartness to it.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Curry and spices on the finish.   I really feel like I need to be eating something with this.   I was almost expecting to get some chicken flavor out of one of this sips.   WOW, an interesting experience.   Seek out if you can, well worth it.
3.7 Location: 22 oz bottle from Central Market, 1/7/14, First rating of 2014! Off to a slow start... Aroma: The aroma is pepper/curry/spice with some fruity notes as well Appearance: It pours a cloudy yellow color with a frothy white head and plus lacework Flavor: The taste is fully of spice, with the fruity flavors providing a balancing undertone Palate: The body is medium, it has a solid mouthfeel, and a tingly, dry finish Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty decent spice-forward beer. I didn’t really notice the coconut as much as I would have liked. Not too shabby. It reminds me of Indra Kunindra, but I think I prefer that one.
3.0 What an interesting beer.. I'll give this a shot Aroma: Where to start?? Tropical, spicy, yeast.. Taste: soft, spicy (but not overwhelming) I can't pick out the coconut, but I think it helps to round out the flavor.. Overall, I like this beer better than I expected
3.9 22 oz bottle pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of lime, spice, malts and a hint of coconut. Taste is sweet malts, spice, lime and a hint of coconut. This beer is very different a lot of real taste
3.4 (draft @ New Belgium Brewing - Fort Collins, CO) Hazy orange pour with a puffy white head. Lots of coconut in the aroma with other spices and sweetness. Very mild hint of curry. Flavor is predominantly coconut and spices. Very light wheat bitterness as the coconut kind of overpowers it. A teeny bit of curry near the end, but enough to let you know that it’s there. Different, but kind of enjoyable.
