Deep amber brown with a dense off-white head, Dunkelweiss 30° rediscovers Hefeweiss beers through a Belgian brewer’s lens. Envisioned by our own Matty “Smooth” Gilliland, this beer opens with sweet clove and banana notes that give way to a chocolaty warm finish with a peppery tingle across the palate. “I thought it would be fun to make a German wheat beer; we’ve explored the Belgian wheats pretty thoroughly,” said Gilliland. “Since this is Lips of Faith – and part of what makes that program fun is to make beers that are really unique and different – making a big, strong, dark Weiss beer sounded pretty folly-licious. It’ll still showcase all of the flavors that a Hefeweiss beer would have, but add in the burly body and extra punch. Think of it as a Grand Cru dunkelweiss.”

3.5Serving: 22 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a very dark brown with tons of red highlights and a large, light tan head. The nose is powerful with notes of banana, a boatload of clove, and wheat. The flavor had a significant amount of fruitiness including the banana from the nose and the clove almost becomes overpowering. A good bit of sweetness and only a slight bitterness on the back end. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Interesting, but just not my style.
3.8Bomber from Whole Foods Market North Raleigh. Pours a while ago and I can still smell strong banana coming from the glass two feet away. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of banana, banana bread, caramel, soy. The taste is sweet bready malts, banana, pineapple, caramel and a mildly hoppy finish. Something almost smoky in there as well. Medium bodied. Enjoyable.
4.1A - Pours a dark black-ruby color with a finger of frothy khaki colored head. He head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is full of banana and clove with pepper with a bit of wheat and sweet malt.
T - Starts off with some clove and banana flavor with some wheat. Through the middle some sweet malt and some more yeast flavor with some more clove. The finish is a mix of banana, clove, some bubblegum, some rich sweet malts, and a touch of booze.
M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a spicy and lightly sweet and warming finish.
D - Very drinkable. Nice take on an stronger version of a dunkelweizen. The balance is nice with some really good strong banana and clove notes.
3.4Poured a brown amberish color. Taste was belgian spice, coriander, and other christams fflavor. Floral finish.

3.2Sweet dark coffee. Highly carbonated. I don’t think German’s would approve of this beer. Middle of the road.
3.8Bottle from Rileys in Madison. Really tasty stuff, above average mouthfeel. Great malting, with cocoa nibs and wheat. Was terrific appetizer for a good supper. Pours very dark brown. Very pleasant malt aromas. A little coca cola.
3.7A brown body with an off-white head and some lacing. An aroma of yeast, banana, colve, and vanilla. The flavor is strong on the yeast and clove with a banana finish and a nice mouthfeel.
3.0bomber pour. hits the glass a nice brown color with a decent head. aroma of clove, nuts and banana. tasted a hint of chocolate in there. easy drinker, medium bodied.
3.7really dark mahogany, nice lacing, nice tan head, good retention.... banana, clove, lightly sour, a little roasty, somewhat fruity, ... not overly carbonated at all, medium bodied, a little watery almost for the abv... i really expected a little more out of this... lightly roasty, big banana clove combo, a little wheaty, i was hoping for a touch of the sour note i smelled, light wateriness detracts from the flavor a bit... as it warms, it becomes more and more full bodied...
3.0Bomber sample- dark cola with good clarity, two finger head with fizzy soapy lacing. Nose- very strong clove, banana, caramel. Taste- molasses, black pepper, and spice. Body is thin for style and overcarbonated.
4.3This beer is rich, smooth and creamy. It has a nice estery flavor of banana with a little roast and a soapy, sudsy finish from the yeast. The body is medium to full with a chalky texter from the floating yeast.
3.6Pours dark chestnut brown, with a lasting foamy tan head, very fine lacing. Medium body, smooth, zesty, and crisp. Rich aroma of banana bread, toffee, nuts, pepper, and clove. Medium sweet, some peppery notes, the barest hint of citrus tartness, and a mild bitter finish. A little on the sweet side, but very drinkable.
3.2(bomber 5/15/11). Brown color with amber hue. Medium off white head, which is mostly diminishing. Moderate clove aroma with light banana. Flavor of the same, with light chocolate and light alcohol. Avg duration. Light alcohol finish with light dryness. Slick texture. Soft carbonation. Fair lacing.
3.4Tap. Yummy stuff. Very dark brown pour with a nice clingy white head. Nose is banana, clove, and some sweetness. Medium mouthfeel with minimal carbonation. Banana and spice on taste with a touch of chocolate.
3.8Poured into a weizen glass. Pretty sure the ABV puts this into the weizenbock category.
4.0 A: Clearish deep amber/light brown color. Three fingers of beige creamy/frothy hybrid head. Average retention overall, but the last quarter inch sticks around for a while. Lots of irregularly placed lacing.
4.5 S: Big hit of banana and clove with pepper underneath. Good bit of roasty toastiness and I swear I’m picking up hints of bacon. Raw cocoa and some caramel. Very nice here.
4.0 T: Again tons of banana, clove, and pepper. More chocolaty than the nose suggested with about the same amount of caramel. Lightly roasty and toasty. Lightly boozy. The taste is good, but as of right now the flavors don’t mesh seamlessly together, at least not yet.
4.5 M: Heavier medium body. Good carbonation for the style with plenty of spritiness to it. Very creamy, though could be a bit smoother.
4.0 D: Pretty good beer. I think after a couple years this could be a hell of a beer.

3.6(22oz bomber) rich ruby/medium brown with lasting tan creamy head. Nose of cinnamon, dark wheat, cinnamon roll, and sweet malts. Taste of dry wheat, clove, mild banana, very light bubblegum flavors. Nice linger of spices, and a well carbonated beer in general.
3.522 oz bottle that’s been in the fridge for a bit from Binny’s South Loop (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich pretty clear yet dark hued brown, some copper dark edges. Nice, with a bigger frothy greyish head atop, stays as a thicker film, laces ok. Aromas are toasty caramel, flaked wheat, cocoa, and banana esters. Some touches of vanilla and brown sugar, more banana, chocolate covered ones. Touches of yeastiness, dry backend. Initial is medium offering a signifcant sweeter banana ester and bread dough up front, lingering into a goodly amount of toast and dry cocoa, spice, and wafts of brown sugar. Vanilla, lingering ABV heat and dryness from the toasty malts. Sweetness is kinda a smack up front, trailing into a dry and spicy finish. Earthy toast and bread, cocoa, brown caramel and banana feel. Touches of cherry or dark fruit in some light flashes in the backend. A lot going for it, perhaps a bit big ABV wise for me, but I was surprised by it.. Was expecting a mess and got a solid beer. Nice. The ABV and dryness do grow on the finish, perhaps getting a touch distracting for some who are more sensitive. I myself thought it was just a bit much at times. Certainly looked pretty.
3.6had on tap at beer kitchen a while back. sharp weiss flavor to it, ie bananas and yeastinesss. pretty decent beer. would have it again...
3.3Big fat soft frothy off khaki head atop a clear chestnut brown. Interesting aroma of dark wheat or pumpernickel, with a undertone of...katchup? Smooth taste of deep dark Belgo-fruit, light katchup again..a bit of wheaty toffee, and light alcohol esters. Deep and rich, albeit an odd combo of flavors. I wasn’t too excited.
4.0In an English pint glass, it’s deep amber-chocolate brown with sticky tan foam. There’s a nice roasty caramel aroma, along with a bit of banana and spice as it warms. It’s just a little slick or syrupy, nice bready notes as it dries out the mouth, but nice residual sweetness. Not as warm as the 9% would imply. Imbibe!
3.1Bottle from wholefoods. Brown pour with thick frothy head. Malty, banana, light spice aroma. Earthy, spicy, yeast and mild hoppiness. nice rich malty body. Meh. Remember when all the lips of faith beers were good?
3.022 fl oz bottle. Pours clear and golden deep amber to brown with a small tan head. Aroma is estery and dry roasted malty. Banana fruity. Estery and sweet malty. Sweet and caramelish finish.
3.2Bottle at Papsø’s - Thanks. Clear dark brown - white head. Spicy, roasted, berries, chili notes ??, sweetness, harbal, spicy, ryebread, nutty, chocolate, cinnamon - too much.
3.7the best example of German Dopple Weizenbock that I have had from an American brewer. A little on the sweet side and not too complex, keep it up NB your headed in the right direction.
thanks from Texas!
3.7Pint at Global Brewhouse. Dark brown with plenty of red. A nice tan head that never did leave. A Very sour aroma of vinegar. Flavor does not match the aroma at all. Lots of yeast and malt. chocolate and a bit of cinnamon. Throw in some grape jelly, too. Hmmm. Fun.
