3.5 Bottle thanks to Doug. Pours a dark brown with small beige head. The aroma is strong roast, coffee bean, and toffee. Thick mouthfeel with rich chocolate and strong coffee roast. Good.
4.8 New Belgium needs to just brew this beer! It is awesome and leaves you feeling like you just hit a homerun! Pours a dark chocolate and fills the room with coffee aromas! Taste is excellent and is worthy of all craft beer lovers.
4.1 This pours a very dark brown/black color with a slight brown head. The aroma is very strong with coffee and some malt tones. The taste is heavy with malt flavors and hint of coffee. The taste starts off good but as you drink the bottle, it does get very malty and chalky. A good beer but it could use some improvement.
3.8 22 oz. bottle, and somehow I can’t remember where I got it. Wine and Cheese Place? Somewhere in St. Louis, I think. Anyway, it pours a deep, not opaque brown color with a small beige head. Notes of dark chocolate, nuts, roasted and toasted malts, coffee and cocoa beans. Medium-bodied, with a roasty, dry mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. I don’t see this one getting better than it is now, and actually showed signs of not being at its prime.
3.9 (Backlog) 22 oz bottle. The look is dark in color, black color, lacing tan head. The smell is coffee, roasty, nice, malt, dark chocolate, good complexity. The taste is roasty, malts, coffee, chocolate, rich, and ok.
4.1 Bottle with the boys, pours a dark black pour with a small java head. Nose is predominately fresh strong roasted coffee. Taste is like a cup of fresh joe with sweet chocolate. Alcohol well hidden. Finish is malty with a sweet coffee and chocolate ending. Delicious. Quaff Score 8 / 10
4.0 Pours black with a brown head and nice aroma of coffee beans and espresso. Taste is all coffee and espresso, comes through nicely with chocolate and roasted malt with a coffee roast finish. Delicious beer and great for coffee lovers
3.8 Poured from 22 oz. bottle. Opaque, brown-black with a small tan head and excellent lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, caramel and toffee. Taste of dark roasted coffee, caramel, toasted/charred malt, charcoal and toffee. Full/medium body and medium carbonation.
3.1 Let’s do this. Didn’t see this coming off the LoF series. Pours black with a fine mocha central dome and rim. Smells of cocoa, milk chocolate, light roasted coffee and some oats. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, some biscuit and fudge brownies, but not sweet. A bit of oatmeal as well. Medium bodied with moderated carb and an off dry, a little too dry finish. This is a lighter take on the triad of coffee, chocolate and stout, and decent. It should be a one off for certain. Serving type: bottle 11-10-2012
3.8 Bottle sampled at a tasting. From notes. Loads of coffee and chocolate with very nice roasty notes. One of my favorites.
3.7 Bottle - Coffee and a bit of chocolate. Jet black with a mocha colored head. Like a mocha flavored coffee. Nice, but a bit one sided. Almost a drink vs. a beer.
3.4 Cola pour with a thin tan head. Aromas of smoked malt, dark chocolate, some coffee but it seems to have faded. Lots of smoky earthy malt, some coffee and very little chocolate flavours. Nice beer that I should have drank a while ago.
3.6 Jet black with tan head. Coffee roasted in nose. Smooth coffee taste and carbination. Easy drinking, very nice.
4.2 22 ounce bottle into signature globe glass, bottled on 10/5/2012. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, toast, and roasted earthiness. Awesome aromas with big presence of coffee, dark chocolate, and roasted notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, toast, and roasted earthiness. Good amount of roasted coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, light char, toast, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt flavors; with a nice sweetness/bitter coffee balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, silky, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent imperial coffee stout! All around great balance and complexity of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
3.7 22oz bottle. Pours an pitch black color with a tight, tan head that leaves a bit of lacing. Smells of coffee mostly with some slight sweetness.Tastes of roasted notes mostly, with a bit of sweetness. Coffee and cocoa come through first with a bit of toasted marshmallow. Slight bit of brown sugar ends it with a touch of sweetness. Medium bodied with a smooth amount of carbonation.
3.9 Tap at Closed for Business, Charleston. It pours near black with a medium light tan head. The nose is roasty, freshly ground coffee, caramel, toast, vanilla, fudge, ash and light tobacco. The taste is fresh coffee, roasted malt, toast, bitter cocoa, caramel and earth with a dry, roasty finish. Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. Tasty, well-balanced and damn drinkable. Yum.
3.8 (Draught) Pours a black body with a medium beige head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, mint, and chocolate. Flavor of chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, earth, and mint.
4.1 Updating based on 2013 version which was much better than 2012. Draft Appearance: Dark brown/black Aroma: Coffee, dark malts, chocolate Taste: Nice coffee, some smoke, and chocolate notes. Palate: Medium/Heavy body with a smooth and non bitter finish. Overall: Much better than the 2012 version. Huge coffee aroma, no bitterness and a very smooth finish.
4.0 22oz bottle from The Grapevine Appearance: Black with a medium sized tan head and some lacing Aroma: Roasted coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malts Taste: Roasted malts, roast coffee, chocolate with a mild bitterness in the finish Nice and tasty
3.7 22oz bottle shared by HighWine-Ed @ Tampa Wkly Gathering-lt brown-black. A-roasty/coffee-dk malt, some earthy. T-roasty/coffee/chocolate-dk malt, earthy hops.
3.8 Amazing dark Brew. Starts strong, ends a bit fun of mill for the style. Tasty as can be.
3.9 pours a mostly opaque dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing beige head. Has a sweet dark caramel and chocolate nose with fresh roasty coffee. Starts with good fullness and toasty dark caramel malts with rich coffee flavor and dark chocolate before a drier bittersweet finish. Pretty smooth and well-balanced
3.8 Bottle, a fast pour made a foamy two to three finger chocolate shake colored head over a brown-black beer, the head receded to a partial cover and ring, some bubbles traveling up the sides of the glass, it left nice spots and fingers of lacing as I drank, there was no sediment in the bottle, this drink had aromas of roasted malt, roast coffee, chocolate and faint dark chocolate in the background, there was a little grain and malt sweetness, there were flavors of roasted malt, coffee with some coffee bitterness and faint chocolate, some malt and chocolate sweetness, the finish had a little malt and coffee bitterness with roast malt and coffee trailing, the mouth feel was more than medium with a nice touch of creaminess, and it had average carbonation, this beer was a nice combination of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate, there was some coffee bitterness that adds a nice touch to this drink, the coffee bitterness grew a bit as the beer warmed but it was not over bearing, a good Impy.
4.0 This is one of the best of the series I have had. Poor is dark and has a nice tan head. Aroma is rich and full of coffee and chocolate. Full of bitter notes like dark chocolate and cold coffee. Finsh is clean lite.
3.8 Bottle shared at GNBC meeting: Poured deep black with brown edges, the head was light brown tan. Aroma was strong roasted coffee and dark chocolate. The taste was similar with chocolate malts and coffee bean.
3.8 Bottle. Pours black/brown color with dark beige head of froth that displayed decent lacing throughout Aroma was roasted malts, coffee grounds, touch of burnt coffee, bit of creaminess as well. Flavor was similar with a lingering earthy hop bit. and some dark chocolate. Soft palate with a semi creamy finish. I found this to be quite enjoyable. Not too dominant in any one sense.
4.0 Bottle: Pours a very dark brown with a finger of creamy brown head. I love a good coffee beer and man this aroma is intense... rich, roasted espresso notes and very light chocolate. After a few sips (throughout the entire glass really) it is good news the coffee flavor isn’t as intense as the aroma suggests. Still, a very good quality coffee flavor, roast, light bittersweetness, and cocoa work together well. Nice feel, soft and silky. Makes me long for this in a smaller format... solid brew.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty sweetish chocolate and vanilla aroma. Sweetish roasted malty chocolate and vanilla flavor. Has a sweetish roasted malty chocolate and vanilla finish.
3.6 Black with fleeting tan head. Nice nutty brewed coffee, chocolate syrup aromas. medium body, average carbonation. brewed coffee, mocha, dark chocolate flavors with sugar, dark roast malts----tasty coffee brew.
3.5 Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of bunches of peat, coffee, chocolate, oak, raisins and even some vanilla noticeable. Medium-bodied; Deep strong peat and coffee flavours dominate with only a hint of chocolate and oak noticeable, but a lot of alcohol and deep bitter notes. Aftertaste is very strong with the coffee, peat, roasted malt and a lot of chocolate and alcohol. Overall, a strong and relatively good beer - showing perhaps a bit too much coffee, not enough chocolate and a little too much alcohol and peat. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Arrowine in Arlington, Virginia on 24-November-2012 for US$6.99 sampled at home in Washington on 28-April-2013.
