New Belgium Lips of Faith - Super Cru

New Belgium Lips of Faith - Super Cru

Our 20th Anniversary! Let’s roll a bunch of New Belgium together and put it in a bottle. Start with the backbone of Fat Tire,
but double the malt and hops; Add in crisp Asian Pears, a very Belgian thing to do; and bring it to life with a Saison yeast.
It’s New Belgium Super Cru from us to you!

2.3 Poured from bomber to pint glass. A: Pours a nice amber with a .5 finger white head the leaves quickly and leaves no visible traces behind besides a thin white ring around the glass. S: Nothing really to be desired. Yeasty smells with a burning malt back drop. Never really smelled something like this before. T: Bready yeast is very prevalent. A little citrus back notes but really just ends with a heat without any flavor. M: Medium bodied with a nice carbonation. Mouthfeel leaves something to be desired. No real taste left over and pretty forgetful. O: Meh. Nothing pops on this, the flavor profiles fall short and it seems just like a bad attempt at a beer and it’s sorry to say because I love New Belgium. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 05-31-2011
3.1 I’m not normally a fan of the Belgian styles, but I’m drawn to this one. Pours a light amber with a moderate head. The aroma has a lot of the sweetness you expect from the Belgian styles. The taste is intriguing - I get fruit notes in there on top of the malts.
3.4 pours a cloudy orange with a thin white head that goes away quickly. smell is of fruit, some caramel, malt, a little bit funky, and some floral in the back. taste is of fruit, caramel, some malt, and a touch of citrus.
3.7 Heavy malty almost butterscotch aroma. Mouthfeel is very sticky , sweet. Taste of peach , prune or overripe plums. Heavy malt taste. Great aaison taste and feel. A nice bomber. But you will want to split it.
2.5 Great taste, color aroma. The furst drink I thought "oh ya", then the overwhelming 10% abv came bursting through. Either I am not quite ready to break the 8-9% abv barrier or I just like my beer to not taste like hard alcohol. I think its the latter.
3.6 Bottle. Clear dark orange with a fizzy white head. Strong pear, malt, and caramel aroma and taste with a cloying candy finish and a thick sticky palate.
3.1 Medium-bodied ale with a mix of flavors. Some orange and grape, which both faded as the beer warmed. A very slight metallic twinge, and then a more solid malty farm ale flavor.
2.9 On tap at Dexters in Madison, pours a clear dark golden red with a thin soapy head, the aroma was extremely sweet with a ton of fruit, the flavor has a fruity finish that does not hide the 10% very well at all, very boozy finish, oily mouthfeel, really didn’t like this one all that much.
3.7 Pours a thick caramel brown with a very tiny head that fades away quickly. Aroma is pear juice, honey, and thick sweet malt. The taste is much of the same, pear juice, sticky sweet malts, and a slight funk from the belgian yeast. Interesting but a little too sweet for me.
3.8 22oz bomber poured into a tulip. Pours a lightly cloudy dark orange with not quite a half finger of white head. Aroma of sour yeast, citrus fruits, green apple and bready malt. Taste is similar. Light sweet with a hint of yeasty spice and some sour green apple. Medium bodied with a somewhat sticky texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, pretty good. I would drink this again any time.
4.1 Bottle. Lots of fruit on the nose, some malt. It’s orange in color, light tan thin head. Taste is almost all pear, very nice - refreshing. Excellent finish with some black pepper along with the fruit.
4.0 Draft. Hazy golden amber color, huge tan head, solid lacing. Aroma of sour fruit bubblegum. Taste is sourdough bread dough, summer fruit, funk. Nice.
2.8 Bottle. Pours a semi cloudy golden yellow. Aroma of pear, soured fruits and funk. Flavour the same. Medium bodied, fruity. Average.
3.8 Bottle at home with Greg. Poured a hazy orange, with a frothy off-white head. Smells of yeast, malt, bread, dough, coriander, and light banana, with a hint of alcohol burn. Taste is bread, dough, some yeast, a little bit of spice through the middle and I am picking up some raisins as it begins to warm, with a light alcoholic burn on the finish. Not overly sweet and the alcohol helps balance it out. Sticky mouthfeel and lively carbonation. A nice interpretation of a Belgian ale, and underrated IMHO.
3.8 Good, but not great. Poured at a good temperature with a nice, foamy, tan head that soon settled and a little lace. Color is a clear orange amber with plenty of tiny bubble trails. Aroma is somewhat muted, but with yeast, bread dough, malt, hint of fruit. Flavor’s similar to nose; good balance between sweet malt and yeast products, carbonic tang, and hop/yeast bitter. Body is good; ditto carbonation. Finish is like flavor with tang and alcohol warmth finishing.
3.3 Tap at the Holy Grail. The look is orange to red in color sort of a deep amber, nice cream colored head. the smell is ripe fruits, yeast, banana, very heavily estery. The taste is more of the same, yeast, belgian, sort of heavy, and not as good as expected.
4.5 10oz pour, TacoMac Prado. Rusty orange color, white foam. Sweet malt, Nice balance. Smooth, Belgian flair. ABV well hidden. Best New Belgium I’ve had. So easy to drink. So smooth. (3317)
4.4 Draft at Dexters. Filtered orange-tan-brown. Thin, patchy off-white head. Pleasant vanilla honey pear aroma. This is a really nice beer. Quite smooth, vanilla edged, smooth for a beer of it’s strength. Perfectly smooth malty, vanilla-pear mouthfeel coupled with some tangy Saison tones, this is quite excellent. Highly original, exceptional balance. World Class, another winner from NB. Sour pineapple. Awesome, memorable interplay between the amber malt, pear, and Saison yeast. Doughy vanilla finish. Easy drinker. Wow.
3.6 Gasoline orange under a dense white head. Leopard-spot lacing. Sweet fruity aroma, watermelon. No hop aroma. Sweet fruity flavor with enough hop to add some dryness to the finish. Simple and easy to drink. Hides the alcohol very well.
3.4 Sweet aroma, with hints of spice and light fruit. Pours a clear, deep amber, with a thin white head. Very mild flavor, with sweet notes, a touch of candi sugar, and just a hint of apples. There’s a bit of heat in this beer, and it is definitely a sipper. Lighter in body then most Belgian Strong Ales, this is an interesting one... I’m curious if a couple of years time might help tame this a bit.
3.4 Bottle at yespr. Clear orange-red coloured with a medium sized off-white head. Sweet and fruity aroma of caramel and berries with notes of cherries. Sweet and fruity flavour of caramel, marzipan and cherries with notes of marzipan. Sweet and warming alcoholic finish.
3.2 clear brown, small white head. aroma is fruity, apple or pear, malts. flavor is malty, fruity notes, yellow fruity notes, faint belgia yeast.
2.8 Bottle. Light pinkish golden with a small bubbly white head. Light funky fruity aroma, sweet and a little tart, with notes of caramel and toasted malts. Flavor is fruitysweet with a boozy finish. Full body - too boozy for me.
3.0 Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of kristina. Pours a deep golden with a slight haze and a smallish off-white head. Fruity, yeasty boozy aroma - slightly tart? Solid body, sweet fruitiness, still tart and a little spicy. Belgian yeast and minerals. Boozy finish. 200312
3.1 Bottle. Pours hazy deep golden with a medium white head. The aroma is quite malty and spicy yeasty with some fruity notes. The flavour is quite boozy and has notes of malt, caramel, yeast and some cloying sweetness. Not my thing.
3.5 Bottled. An amber beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of spices, pears, alcohol, and a bit of caramel, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.
3.2 Slightly hazy copper in color Almost no head to speak of. It was gone before I even got my nose in it. Fruity, saison style spiciness in the aroma. Herbal, boozy. Can definitely pick up the pear juice. Starts out a bit tart. Fruity & floral before giving way to a little thick malty sweetness with some boozy alcohol. A hint of yeasty spiciness. Just a big strong beer with some fruity and funky characteristics. Thick, syrupy, medium to full body. soft carbonation. A little heat as it warms. I don’t know how i feel about it. It’s ok. It’s different and not really what I was expecting. The first sip was very tart and caught me off guard. The flavors here aren’t too complex.
3.4 Sample at the Ping Pong, Foosball, and Great Beer tasting on 03/03/2012. The beer pours a clear reddish-gold color with a medium fizzy white head that evaporates steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of bananas, wheat and malt. Medium syrupy body with flavors of pears and bananas along with some sweet wheat and malt. The finish is fruity with a lingering syrupy sweetness left over. Decent overall.
3.1 Pours a clear burnt orange with a small trace of white head. Aroma of yams, definite pear, apple juice (reminds of it anyway), bubblegum, and a slight "dusty" yeast note. Flavor is similar with yams, apple juice, dusty yeast funk, pear, and something slight spicy, but the sweet yam taste is very dominant. Finishes with the yeast coming out a bit more, but not much hop character and it’s not QUITE enough to balance the beer. Mouthfeel is a little prickly and empty, though fairly heavy. Like many Lips of Faith beers, it’s a good idea, but it doesn’t all work. When I read " double the malt of Fat Tire" I knew it would have that yam-sweetness. Eh.
3.0 2012.03.09 - 650ml bottle in pint glass. Pours light to medium amber. Taste... Agree with other reviews. A bit sweet banana, followed by a bit of bitter and alcohol, semi sweet finish. Not bad, I wouldn't drink a lot.
