New England Sea Hag IPA

New England Sea Hag IPA

A ghostly apparition reportedly skirts the shores of New Haven harbor; a whispy widow eternally searching for her lost-at-sea husband. It is truly a sad tale of loss. But hey! At least she's got a beer named after her, huh? Our flagship beer pours in with a citrus, fruity nose and a crisp floral finish that is well balanced with its Pilsner, Munich, and Crystal malt blend.

Hops: Columbus, Centennial, Amarillo, Citra

2006 description:
This one's a beauty; a rich and full bodied India Pale Ale with complex malt character blended with cascade and noble hops. The end result is a beer that satisfies the "hop head" out there and won't chase away the newcomer. Drink it. It's good.

Note: The recipe had changed gradually over time, having started with Cascade and Hallertau, and included Fuggles, other English hops, PNW hops, different malts. Read more here:

3.6 Pours golden orange with a small to medium white head. Aroma is citrus, pine an caramel..balanced all around. Taste is moderate bitters with some acidic tartness. Medium bodied, slick with some stickiness on the finish.
3.5 I cant belive this is just cascade and noble hoos. Very bright citrust hips, light caramel backbone. Old school, but I wouldnt mind drinking this all day.
3.7 Pour from a 12oz can. medium amber brew with creamy white head. great lacing. Aroma is crisp citrus with strong grapefruit notes. Taste is moderate malt up front with resin and citrus kicking in quickly. Transitions to a very citrusy end. Crisp, clean with excellent character. First rate IPA.
3.9 On tap at Rizzuto’s in Bethel, CT. Dark gold color with a thin head. Great cling and good head retention. Pine needles and bitter citrus aroma. Flavors are toffee, pine, bitter citrus and stone fruits and biscuit. Slightly sticky mouthfeel, but otherwise clean and crisp. Nicely balanced. This is not an over-the-top hop bomb. Well made and very enjoyable IPA.
3.5 Super floral citrus aromas. Pours golden orange with a fine white head. Big sour lemon well balanced flavors with a crisp finish. Heavy lacing. Very nice.
3.8 Had this on tap at Three Sheets in New Haven. This is their house IPA. It is always on tap. Hoppy but well balanced. F Avey
3.7 At the source: pours orange gold with a white head. Aroma is citrus and pine and resin. Moderate and well balanced bitterness. Nice slightly malty backbone. Nice flavors. Good hops.
3.4 Can from LKS. Pours light Amber with slightly off white head. Aroma is caramel, tangerine, bread, floral, stale citrus. Flavor is skunky citrus, caramel malts, pine, bready malts. Medium body malty IPA, OK.
3.7 On draft at NEBCO. The pour is a darker golden color with a thin ring of off white head and a little bit of soapy lace. The aroma is really interesting. There is a bit of hop and a nice maltiness, but I’m definitely not a fan of the malt. Light fruitiness to it. The flavor is a bit more malty. There is a grassy hop that is decent, but the malts I didn’t care for. The mouth feel is th Ike’s and more softly carbonated with a lingeringly sweet tropical fruit and malt aftertaste. It’s pretty itndresting, but I’d expected more from the flagship.
3.5 Sample at NEBCo with koleminer20. Aroma is floral, sweet tropical fruit, some pine, some malt bitterness. Appearance is golden amber, mostly clear, off white head. Taste is grass, floral, pine, tropical sweetness, malt. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light crisp carbonation, pine bitterness in the aftertaste. Overall, decent but not nearly their best.
3.6 Tap at Plan B. Mostly clear light orange pour with a white clingy head. Nice citrus IPA - low malt. Hint of dank. Nice hop bite with a clean finish. Quite solid.
3.9 Can. Pours hazy orangish with off white head. Aroma is fruity hoppy with Lemon Orange Grapefruit hint. Taste is grapefruit zest piney hops with a grapefruit finish. I really like it.
4.0 Got in a BIF from tasterschoice62. 12 ounce can into tulip glass, no can dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of juicy citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange rind, light pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, and fairly creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice IPA. All around great juicy citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
4.0 Pours a cloudy, amber-orange color with a huge, spongy head. Smells of a skunky grassiness, together with herbs and bready malts. Has a subdued layer of fruits hidden underneath the herbs, coming to light as the beer warms up. This adds a nice complexity to the nose, while the hops in this still produce a well nuanced noble profile. Has a medium carbonation among a pleasantly soft mouthfeel with a bubbly, bitter finish. Tastes of bready malts and herbal, dank hops, providing a leafy bitterness from the very beginning. Malts get a late toffee addition, while the hops produce a lemon peel crispness, blending well into the herbs, tied together by a mineralic, yet soft, quality. Finishes almost tropical, citrus remains on the palate, while developing a juicy crispness, while the herbs vanish slowly, still reminding of its bready origin. Well put together, while featuring a surprisingly european hop bill, allowing fruity qualities to cut through, enriching the beers taste by a fair margin. Malts provide a consistent breadyness, catching up with the herbal hops in a very pleasant fashion.
4.2 It’s hard to describe why this beer is ridiculously good other than to say it’s perfectly balanced. That might not sound so appealing that you’d want to seek it out, but it really is fantastic. There’s a touch of malty sweetness; nothing prominent, but enough to make sure that bitterness doesn’t overwhelm your palate. The hops are citrusy, piney, and floral, but not too bitter. Flavor and aroma are present without being too dense. Really, everything works in perfect harmony. This beer is the epitome of the total being infinitely greater than the sum of its parts.
3.3 Can. Pours golden orange with a thin white head. Aroma of citrus, pine, and grass. Flavor of citrus, pine, light fruit, grass, orange and had a dry crisp finish.
4.3 Sick beer to have around, easy carry on the golf course. One of the few that holds up to stone ipa. Less hangover for some reason.
4.0 12oz can pours a hazy yellow amber color with a lot of head. Head smells yeasty. Nice easy going hop bitterness with some tropical fruit flavors.
4.8 My go to beer. Tasty smells great easy to sip. If you don’t like sea hag I don’t want anything to do with you
3.4 12oz can via BA trade at Sour’d in September. Poured an alright looking medium body amber under a smaller foamy white head. Aroma/flavor of dank hops, light citrus, grains, vread, dough, grassy hops and lemons. Medium body with creamy carbonation and an average to quicker fading aftertaste.
4.1 Can. Aroma is hoppy resin, citrus, pine, grass, herbs, mild malt. Appearance is hazy yellow with two finger white fluffy head with nice lacing and nice sparkle. Taste is mix of fruity sweetness and mild bitterness. Palate is medium body with thick texture, average carbonation, and nice long finish of mixed sweet and bitter. Overall, pretty true to the brewery’s description (a rarity, I find)--complex mix of malt and hops that is hoppy enough for those aficionados without driving away those of us malt types.
3.1 Draft. Some pine resin on the nose. Flavors are a teeny bit sweet, orange and honey, subdued by a big but indistinct malt bill. A tick better than standard.
3.6 Big resin with a bit of citrus, easy going malt body which represents the hops well, solid IPA/Pale Ale
4.1 Also got this as an extra in a trade. This one was much more enjoyable. Very hazy body. Nice fruity pine aroma. Big bitter resin bite with hints of citrus.
3.6 Pour out of 12 oz can, clear golden orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of orange, lemon, slight pine, grass, touch of spice, some slight pineapple. Taste was a mix of orange, pine, slight lemon and spice notes into a bit of earth, bread, some slight herbal notes, finishing fairly bitter. Pretty simple, but tasty nonetheless.
3.6 Pint on tap at the hotel in Oxford, CT. Mostly clear golden orange color. Thin off-white head. Leaves good ridges of lace. Medium-plus body. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. Light slick. Piney, citrusy hop, a nice amount of it. Moderate bitter, lighter sweet. Satisfying, swiggable IPA.
4.0 Nice IPA with a golden color and a tart tangy taste, no bad aftertaste to detract from the crisp clean taste
3.4 Pretty balanced IPA, with a prominent citrus and floral notes. Cascade hops stand out well.
4.1 Golden orange color. Aroma is orange, orange peel and floral. Taste is more oranges with some pine on the back end. Very nice Ipa
3.5 Extra from trade. Floral and pefumey. Light bitter. Not bad, not super exciting either.
