New Glarus Black Top

New Glarus Black Top

We invite you to discover this newest beer style Black IPA. Political debate rages over the origins of this jet black beer as both coasts feel they deserve credit. Our Black Top is a pleasant road connecting Villages and Communities statewide on a ride of Black IPA discovery.

Expect this beer to pour a hop forward jet black glass brimming with aromatic bitterness. Brewmaster Dan skillfully weaves molasses and chocolate malt undertones with a soaring rush of clean citrus and pine hop notes, to deliver a drinkable Black IPA. Savor Black Top, like Wisconsin’s miles of licorice ribbons of ink that meander through armies of corn and bovine mowed fields. Enjoy the journey on a road less traveled.

3.9 12 oz bottle pours black with a tan head. Aroma of toffee, pine and citrus. Taste is resin and citrus with a hint of caramel.
3.7 Nice taste of hops with citrus notes. Medium carbonation with a solid after taste.
3.6 bottle. Near black with one finger head. Malty base with very nice citrus hops that punch through. For the style, it’s quite excellent with solid flavor backbone.
3.9 12oz bottle pours a dark reddish brown with a light tan one finger head and nice lacing. Aromas of malt, light citrus hop, hints of fruit and caramel. Flavor is mild-medium bitter with a nice finish.
4.1 On tap, poured into a sampler glass. It’s rather citrusy (a bit unexpected for a black IPA) and grassy, with only a slight roasted note. Later, toffee starts to dominate and a light coffee and bread crust emerge to join the citrus and grass. It’s a deep and dark, but clear mahogany color, with a very light, near-white, tan, dense head that leaves an abundant dense lace and retains a webbed surface and medium ring. The taste is a medium high bitter and medium sweet. The beer is a crisp beer, with a light fizz carbonation, an oily and a bit sticky texture, and a medium full body. There are burnt notes on the palate along with molasses, toast, raisin sweetness, and there’s bitter rind and licorice at the finish. The aftertaste is dry with a bread crust flavor.
3.8 Bottle received in trade. Thank you hackobock! Pours dark blackish brown with a creamy beige head that leaves some sticky lacing and trace in the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly malty, tiny fruity and tiny herbal with roasted malts, burnt caramel, grapefruit juice, freshly cut grass, pine needles, dark roast coffee, minerals and orange zest. Taste is bitter and slightly fruity with roasted malts, burnt caramel, grapefruit juice, unripe mango, dark roast coffee, freshly cut grass, pine needles, salty liquorice hard candy, moist soil, kumquats and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is crisp, dry, astringent and light to medium bodied. Finish is bitter with roasted malts, grapefruit juice, unripe mango, freshly cut grass, pine needles, liquorice, moist soil, minerals, ash and lemon zest. Rock solid Black IPA! An easy to drink treat!
3.8 December 30, 2014. Bottle at home, bottled on october 6, 2014. Dark brown with a creamy dense off-white head. Aroma is sweet ripe pineapple, mango, red berries pine and faint roasted coffee notes. Taste is sweet ripe tropical fruits, light grassy and roasted bitterness. Finish is light bitter with light sweet fruits and light coffee. Medium bodied, average carbonation.
3.2 12fl oz bottle poured into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint. Very dark brown with two fingers off white head. Aroma is subtle candy and piney hops. Flavor is basically the same. The hops flavor intensifies for the duration of the long finish. A mellow good-tasting brew.
3.4 Bottle: Deep brown, chestnut body. Translucent at the edges only with a frothy khaki foam that plumps up nicely. Aroma of citrus & grapefruit peel, lightly bitter pines, & a deep undercurrent of semi-bitter roasted malts with a hint of dark chocolate sweetness creeping in the back. Maybe some very faint coffee grounds, too. Hint of char. Flavor has a nice balance of the roasted malts, mild ashiness, & burnt cacao bean blending with overtones of pine, grapefruit pith, & bitter citrus rind. Slight balance of sweetness on the back-end from the dark malts. Never swings too far one way, though. Balanced, albeit a touch mild overall. Still a nice, easy drink for the style, though. Not bad.
3.6 12oz bottle pours a dark cola brown win ruby highlights and a large khaki head. Aroma of sweet citrusy resinous pine, with mild chocolate and slight roasted malt. Taste is sweet, resinous bright citrus hops, chocolate malt, with a solid bitterness on the finish. Pretty decent.
3.4 Bottle, pours a dark reddish-brown body with a light brown head. Aroma of fresh citrus/pine hops with some roasted malts and licorice. Taste is mainly roasted malts, piney hops, and a little cocoa/licorice.
3.6 "the hoppy stuff has been the only chink in the new glarus armor. nothing bad, but definitely not standouts like the fruit beers...or the wheats...or the barleywines...or the lagers :) this ended up being a very nice, well-done session ale. lighter in all aspects than the majority of black ipas i;ve had, but very pleaseant and well balanced at the same time. reminded me of the hop and malt profile of odell mnt standard, and awesome black ipa...just a ton lighter. easy drinking and refreshing, though. thanks Lou, for the liver damage!"
3.6 Dark brown pour, tan head. Nose is piney, roasted malts, hop resin, slight veggies. Taste is pine, a touch of coffee, roasted malts. Creamy mouthfeel with a dry bitter finish.
3.2 On draft at the brewery. Aroma of fresh, piney, leafy and lightly fruity hop, some background caramel sweetness and toasted, dark bread, some faint cocoa as well and slight coffee tones. Rather complex, all in all. Clear dark brown in color, head is very fine, slight and lasting. Flavor profile is likewise full of piney, fresh hops, darkly toasted malts, somewhat husky grains and chocolate, finish is all hop bitterness and lingering, leafy, piney flavor. Slightly prickly mouthfeel, lightly resinous with a medium body. Good, for sure, but not what I would call an outstanding example of the style.
4.6 I drank this on tap at the brewery in New Glarus. It could have tasted awful but doesn't matter when you're in heaven. Love the hops.
3.4 Cellared and shared 12 oz. bottles poured to snifters, showing a black/brown color, with a touch of amber highlighting at the stem, light tan froth to bubbly film, and spotty lacing. The nose was roasted, wood, molasses, and mocha notes. Medium bodied, the taste offered the same notes, with a bit of creaminess to the mouthfeel, but a diminished, citrus & pine bitterness that still retained some dryness for the finish. Enjoyable, but will have to try fresh when up in WI..
3.4 Highly carbonated and pours nearly black with a thick and rich tan head. Flavor is somewhat muted at first with burnt toast and dark chocolate flavors followed by a nice dry finish that brings out some of those chocolate flavors a bit more. This might benefit from drinking a few degrees warmer than your average IPA. I don’t know that this would be my go-to style, but it’s well done. Would drink again.
4.1 Very interesting and tasteful. Black pour with some ruby highlights. Soft heat. Aroma of molasses and caramel. Taste is a smooth blend of caramel malt, cocoa, molasses and finishes with a pine hops bite.
3.1 One of my first ever black IPAs. Molasses, cocoa, and bread on the nose, following onto the palate. Finishes with an interesting pine/grass note to give this a nice backbone.
3.8 Pours a dark brown with a medium sized, light tan head that doesn’t last all that long. The aroma gives you a strong citrus impression, with lots of grapefruit and pine. It has a malty balance of chocolate, some licorice, and light coffee as well. The taste has a heavy hoppy bitterness to it. Lots of pine, with milder grapefruit and chocolate. I still get hints of licorice. Aftertaste is short, with pine and some coffee. Medium bodied, lots of lively carbonation, with a very hoppy texture. I enjoyed this. Its a very good representative of this style.
3.5 [Bottle] Pours a very dark shade of brown with a rocky brown head. Nose is more malt based than expected. The taste is of piney hops, chocolate malts and grains. Moderately bitter. A lighter black IPA, but much more sesionable as well. Tasting notes from 2012.
3.4 12oz bottle in a tulip. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of lightly roasted malts, light chocolate, and a decent amount of floral hops. Flavor the same, all sort of light. Average texture. Decent but not the best of its style.
3.9 LSU Game Day Tasting. Notes are pretty sparse on this brew. The roasted malts doesn’t over power the natural hoppiness of the and IPA. One of the best Black IPA’s I I’ve ever had. Bottle - Tasted at Sharing
4.2 Very enjoyable black ipa. Aroma and taste convey fresh pine and hay. There is also some flavor of coffee and cocoa.
2.9 Bottle is on old side, 5 months. Pours black with finger of head. Nose is little hoppy, little roasty. Taste is roast, hops, mild bitterness, pretty watery. Eh.
3.7 Pours very black with a slight fruity pebble aroma. A lot of dark fruits and hops. Pretty good for the given style.
3.6 Bottle shared thanks to Dmac. Pours out a moderate brownish color with a small off white head. Aroma is of some light chocolate, burnt toast, citrus hops and some light licorice. Taste is complex, nice smooth mouthfeel, citrusy/pine hop resin notes, chocolate, toast, mild caramel sweetness, then some more bitterness in the finish. Rather solid.
3.7 Bottle pour dark woody brown. Nose surprisingly sweet with some fruit hop. Taste some citrus up font followed by mid palate sweetness. Some fruit. Roast comes through more inn the late palate and finish
2.9 12 oz bottle and served in a nonic pint glass; Pours a mahogany brown hue with frothy fading head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of citrus, pine, roast, anise, char,, pipe tobacco and bread. The taste is mostly ashy roast with a fair amount of fruity hops and faint diacetyl. The mouth feel is tannic and tea-baggy, very dry and honestly not has refreshing as i would like. Color me disappointed for I had high hopes for this beer since NG does such a nice job with most styles but this one is just to mundane and flawed to make me ever want another, alas I have another bottle from the "winner box" to drink.
3.6 12oz bottle from MOTORHEADTODD. Poured a slightly thinner looking super deep Tootsie Roll brown with a smaller super light beige foamy smaller head. Aroma of lightly burnt yellow grapefruit, burnt toast, darker chocolate, grassy, burnt hops. Body is medium and creamy with lighter to average carbonation, overall nice. Flavor is similar with darker lightly burnt citrus fruits, tropical fruits, tangarine, roasty, hint of chocolate. Good stuff.
