New Glarus R & D Golden Ale (2009)

New Glarus R & D Golden Ale (2009)

Bold floral bouquet sweeps forward, encouraged by the Maris Otter Malt. Ale and Brettanomyces promote complex Brett characters. Dry finish. Alive and still fermenting, this bottle will continue to build carbonation. Pour with care. Brewed 3-23-09. Bottled 6-18-09.

3.6 Bottle shared at Campground Brewdown. Poured a hazy deep golden straw body with an average to larger bright white foamy head. Aroma of Brett, funkiness, horse blanket. Full body with super fizzy carbonation at first but that dies and this actually finishes watery. Flavor is funky with notes of Brett, horse blanket and rottin lemons. Good but aroma trumps flavor.
4.5 Shared a 2009 vintage 500ml bottle into a mini schooner glass, thank you so much Vyvvy! It poured a slightly hazy orangish-golden-amber color with white head, everlasting with lace. Absolutely perfect aromas: husky grains, sweet malts, faint caramel, biscuit, rising bread dough, baklava, fruity ale yeast esters, and mysterious and slightly barnyardy Brett. Flavor balance was just as complex, a little more hops-forward than I expected, tangy and citrusy but smooth, smooth, smooth. Light-medium body, spritzy carbonation, well-rounded wheat-bread mouthfeel, nicely concealed elevated alcohol, lasting bitterweet aftertaste. An unbelievably delicious beer.
4.0 Clear golden. No head. A lot of carbonation. Wheat. Light body beer. No head. Smooth.
3.7 Bottle, poured a cloudy orange color, aromas of brett, light apples, grapes, and light wheat. Flavors are the same, tart wheat with some apples and grapes. Not overly sour, interesting beer, nice overall.
3.6 Bottle received via trade with TheBeerSommelier. Pours hazy orange with a medium, fizzy off-white head, medium retention with spare lacing. Aroma is phenolic yeast, grape and vinous notes, Brettanomyces and cracker malt with stale hops. Flavor is Brettanomyces and phenols, light vinous and grape notes, pear and apple with supporting malt, light hops and bitterness and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.3 bottle: odd nose barnyard & diaper. tasty body, caramel fruity with horse blanket. Finish is dry with pine touch of pepper
3.5 I started off really liking this in the first couple sips but it became a bit nausiating after a while. Way too much brett character. Tastes like a hampster cage and flowers which you would think would deserve a lower rating but i liked the first few sips just couldnt handle much more.
4.1 very very bretty. Extreme brett, it is the 2009 however. A little sweetness int he background
3.7 2012-08-18. Hazy bright orange body with a nice beige head. 3+ very must aroma, sort of grassy and funky - brett? 7++ Flavour is similar, musty, dry sort of bretty character, mild malt. 7++ Average bodied palate. Bit simple at times but pretty enjoyable. Bottle, Campground Brewdown 2012
3.9 Opened with caution - enjoyed an R&D bottle with lunch today. Color on pour was great - a golden orange with a nice white head. The aroma was very wild - smelled of the fair/barnyard and lemon zest. Taste is hoppy and earthy with some wet hay flavor. Creamy and not very carbonated, it is not overly dry despite the hops flavor. A surprising beer, but tasty.
3.6 Sample from sherm1016 500 ml bottle...thanks. My second Brett beer tonight but completely different. Complex is a good word for this...flowery taste upfront with dry palate / feel at the end. Need more!
3.4 barnyard story. Very funky aroma, barnyard on steroids. Significant foaming. Very much smooth soapy lace, and lots of soapy head. The taste is barnyard, socks, wet rag, detergent, straw, corn, peas. Smooth mouthfeel, though mildly acidic in finish. A dramatically different golden. FlandersNed.
3.8 Bottle shared by Chaney. Thanks Brandon! Batch 160BBL Brewed 23 May 2009 Bottled 18 June 2009 A: Hazy, light orange color with a large bubbly head that leaves a thick coat of lacing on the glass. S: A really terrific aroma with scents of Belgian yeast, funk, gueuze-like characteristics. T: Nice brettanomyces character with some pleasant funk and spices in the mix as well. The beer smells better than it tastes, but I do really enjoy the flavor. The beer has a nice sourness, though it’s not super tart or puckering by any means. M: Good feel, appropriate carbonation, alcohol hidden very well. D: A really good brew. I would drink this anytime. Recommended. I am really glad I got to try this one again. Previously, I had a 1 oz. sample at a tasting and really enjoyed it. I’ve been looking forward to enjoying a healthy pour of this beer ever since. Possibly my favorite offering from New Glarus.
3.4 Hazy peach colored pour. Nose of tart wheat and bread, with the flavor bring more of that lemon acidity, grain, touches of stone fruit. Almost like a berliner weiss, but i’m not really impressed.
3.8 Pours orange with a thin head. The aroma has the unmisrakeable Brett. The flavor has that sourness and a bit of funk. The flavor has the Brett as well. Very crisp and clean. Nice after taste. Mine was brewed 3/23/09 and bottled 6/18/09. Old but good like me.
4.1 Appearance: Pours a light golden body, hazy, and with a full inch of near white foam. Smell: Leather chaps dipped in phenols, pineapple rings dipped in relatively clean sweat, a squirt of lemon juice, and some underlying straw-like malts. Taste: Lightly malty with modest touches of bread and toasted straw. Light sweetness from a dusting of powdered sugar. Background hops remain light. Floral soap suds. Musty cobwebs, lightly funky barnyard character, jutting phenols. Citrusy lemon. Saliva-inducing, drying finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-high, engaging carbonation. Overall: An interesting, enjoyable brew.
4.5 I picked this up at the New Glarus Brewery on my May 2012 visit. At that time, this was the only “brewery exclusive” beer that was offered. Pours a cloudy copper color with a thick, foamy head. Scent is a mixture of citrus and floral scents. Taste is bold with flavors of hibiscus, citrus and other floral tones. Smooth, mellow and delicious. Drinks great and keeps inviting you back for another sip. If you think the New Glarus 6 packs are good, you’re in for a treat as this is even better!
3.4 pours a pale yellow wit a thin foamy white head. aroma is dusty and spicy with light bretty and fruity notes...slightly oxidized i think. flavor follows suit...mild bretty and fruity notes but a hint of cardboard and a stale note. mouthfeel is light and silky with a dusty/fruity finish that has tea notes...2009 bottle may be a little pat its prime.
3.9 Belle robe blonde cuivrée aux arômes florales et funky. En bouche c’est fortement malté, sucré avec les notes du brett qui forment doucement le liquide à sa main.
4.2 Pours, as one would expect, a beautiful gold. Super carbonated, huge white head. Aroma is fruity, yeasty and wonderful. Flavor offers more complexity with each sip. Wonderful.
3.9 This was brewed 3-23-09 and I’m tasting it on 4-5-2012. The smell reminds me of a museum, kind of a old/musty/sweet smell. I don’t mean that in a bad way...it doesn’t smell bad at all. It’s hazy gold with a fair amount of sediment. The taste again reminds me of a museum, plus pear on the front end, and kind of citrusy in the back end. It’s a complex and interesting beer to try.
3.8 Pours a golden straw color with a finger of white head. Really nice balance of sweet pale malt notes and fruit. Quite a bit of pear and apple with a touch of pineapple. Some light tartness on the nose as well. The flavor is clean and very enjoyable. Great balance of malt and Brett. Somewhat dry but a touch of residual malt sweetness as well as some sweet fruit character. A bit of spice character on the palate which is very nice.
4.1 Bottle: Poured a hazy bright blonde color ale with a super huge foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of funky barnyard notes with some light tart notes and some pungy hops are quite nice. Taste is a great mix between some floral dry hops notes with light pungy characteristics mix ion with some notes of funky barnyard ester and a tart finish. Body is full with great carbonation. I though this was a great take on an Orval-like beer style with loads of complex notes.
3.3 Bottle, awkward aroma, not quite sour and a weird hoppiness. It’s not quite sour and not quite a golden.... Interesting.
4.2 My Bottom Line: Baguette crusts and tropical fruit rise from this Wild Ale’s malt and yeast combo, as a pillowy mouthfeel and a supple flavor profile ensure full-on palate comfort. Further Personal Perceptions: -A veil of foam tops the cloudy amber. -The mouthfeel is chewier than Orval. It’s not as dry or prickly. -The flavor profile is balanced throughout. -That is one complex aroma ! -Finishing bitterness is elegant, levelled with the rest of the moderate flavor profile. -This is supremely drinkable. Bottle.
3.3 Bottle from JohnFoxy and samples from a couple of tastings .. . Pours a deep yellow .. great foam head, lacing is spackled on nicely .. . from light brett, can opener, lots of barnyard, light spice, and soap .. . loved this fresher more than aged, age thinned it out quite a bit .. . . Is that what it is? I thought you let one go! That’s why I didn’t say anything! That’s very kind of you! Thank you!
4.2 500ml thanks to... damn.. I forgot. Sorry... Appearance : Hazy shiny amber with medium foamy head. Great big dense head. Lots of lacing. Aroma : Big big brett B, very phenolic slightly rubbery with some tropical fruits coming from some brett C or A probably. Really complex brett. Some nice malt come thru with light bready notes. Taste : Big phenolic brett with great fruits. Light malt. Fairly dry.Light malt on finish with some sticky brett. Persistent finish. Palate : Great fluffy pillowy generous carbonation. Overall : Really really interesting. Big brett all around. Malt felt quite shy but you can tell it’s there because this doesn’t feel like an everyday brett bomb that sometimes lacks depth and balance. This felt very cohesive and even if the brett was in your face, the beer still felt very cohesive. Great persistent finish. Great mix between the fruity tropical brett and the phenolic brett. Highly drinkable. Some compare this to an Orval but I don’t really agree. This is nowhere near as dry as an Orval. The brett character here is also more complex. I liked this better than Orval which is too dry for me. This one had a rich finish while still being fairly dry. Amazing stuff.
3.7 Big thanks to Deuane for sharing this one with Hojaminbag and myself. Bottle poured into a taster glass. A - Pours golden yellow with a small half finger tall white head, dissipating down to almost nothing, leaving light lacing down the glass. S - Smells of crisp brett funk, light grassy hops, and lemon rind. This one is pretty dry from all that brett with the rest of the aroma’s helping to balancing it out a bit. Very nice. T - The brett funk dominates this one. As it begins to die down a bit you pick up some of the lemon, clove, and grassy hops. The finish is a mix of chewy brett and light acidity, lingering for a short time. I enjoyed this one, it was light and easy to drink. M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Light, funky, feel with a small amount of it lingering throughout the finish. O - I really liked this one. The brett works very well with the rest of the flavors. I would say it is VERY similar to Orval, as it is supposed to be I presume. Very nice stuff.
4.0 Big thanks to Terminus for picking this one up for me some time back. Pours clear golden with a generous sudsy white head. The aroma has a bunch of funk and bugs along with stone fruit, toasty malt, brett and huskiness. Medium body that is on the crisp side with some frothy carbonation that really works to distribute the flavors. It starts out with the notes of the aroma, but it is drier and has a lot of spiciness and pepper. There is also a bit of basement funk and wild characters that have probably developed over the last couple years. The finish has some sulfur and mineral aspects that really seems to work for this pretty well. Quite complex and very great beer. Hopefully I’m able to pick more of this up at some time. Another big winner from New Glarus.
3.6 Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy golden with a small off white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is a fruity hop and citrus. Thin mouthfeel with a wheat and dry hop. A very good wild ale from New Glarus
