New Glarus Stone Soup

New Glarus Stone Soup

Who is qualified to judge one's contribution? Is it the pure Wisconsin barley malt or shall credit be given to traditional German and English hops? Maybe it is the Belgian Monastic yeast or the Brewer's tender care? Combined, this is a sophisticated Abbey style ale. Both elegant and drinkable this ale is cleanly aromatic with spicy notes of clove and ginger. Crisp and fragrant up front while gracefully sliding into warm malt notes at the finish.

Fermented natually in this bottle, the beer in your hand is a living testament to the value of many working together to create something bigger than the individual parts. Moving a mountain begins with a single stone.

3.1 Fruit and yeast. Sweet slightly "wheaty" aroma. Pours very cloudy light yellow with a thick fluffy foamy bright white head. Fresh, clean, fruity. A slight sour yeasty hint and a little bubblegum on the finish. Distinct wheat beer feel and flavor. Nice easy drinking beer.
3.3 February 14, 2014 - bottle from Churchills. Cloudy yellow pour with some head. Aroma was fruity and spicy. Taste was consistent with aroma, but also a touch of hops.
4.0 Thanks to iNBE. Again New Glarus produces a very good beer. The belgian yeast really stands out, it is almost hefeweizeny. Big soft mouth feel but tiny little bubbles to fizz at the end. Serving: Bottle
3.0 Bottle. The pour is light. The aroma has strong crisp belgian nose. The taste is light and airy. Drinks easy, would be a good summer beer on a hot day.
3.7 Nice aroma of peppery fruit and spices...hints of peppermint. Plae golden in color...lively carbonation. White head dissipates quickly. Sweet fruit up front. Nice balance of sweet, spices and fruit. Light mouth feel, effervescent. Finishes with enough bitterness to balance nicely. More of a refreshing, summer beer than typical Belgian ale, but nice.
3.4 Rated on 12-09-2009 (Bottle) When poured, this beer forms a medium sized very fizzy white head that quickly dissipated, hazy straw body, fizzy carbonation, and no lacing. The Aroma is sweet, fruity, spicy, and clove. The Taste is sweet, malty, clove, spicy, and finishes dry. This beer is light bodied. In conclusion, this is an easy, light drinking beer, refreshing and would be a good summer beer. This beer is worth trying and a beer that I would drink again and recommend.
4.0 From a bottle. Very interesting, it’s got a hefeweizen character with some spiciness. Slightly distracting iron character.
3.6 A: hazy light golden color S: spicy, ginger, licorice T: clove, cinnamon, orange M: fizzy, thin, oily O: a nice belgian with a local flavor
3.5 Pale golden pour with a thin white head and very light lacing .... aroma of light clove and fruity yeast with a honey and sweet grainy malt .... taste is of sweet grainy malts, light clove, definitely ginger, fruity yeast ... has a linger sugary fruity yeast flavor in the finish with some dry honey ... decent stuff
3.3 12oz bottle, thanks to nuplastikk. Shared with b3shine. Mostly clear golden color. Thin white head, couple bits of lace. Nice orange, light belgian yeast. Good zest. Pretty smooth and easy drinking for a belgian ale. Light to medium body. Soft, lighter carbonation, lightly dry texture. Moderate sweet, reasonably zesty taste. Good stuff. Much better than expected.
3.4 Bottle to snifter (shared by DrSilverworm). Looks solid; a transparent lighter gold with this white head that quickly dissipates into lacing. Smells of Belgian yeast and spices with some floral notes as well. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. A solid example of the style.
3.9 12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a semi-hazy copper color with a white head of foam that dissipates at a moderate rate. The aroma is grassy, herbal, and just a little floral. The floral is more on the estery side. The taste is a little spicy with a bit of sweetness lingering in the background and into the finish. I get a little bit of ginger in the taste as well. Light to medium body with medium carbonation. This is a really nice example of a lower alcohol Belgian Ale.
1.8 Rating from 2009: hellgelbe und leicht trübe Farbe, toll aromatischer Vanille-Banane-Geruch.
3.5 Solid Belgium style beer. I get ripe stone fruit and bready yeast in nose. More of the same on palate along with some clove and banana.
3.3 Bottle. Light golden with large white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, sweetness, and cloves. Light body with some sweetness and hints of spice and bananas.
3.4 bottle thanks to cbfobes. nose is full of Belgian esters, soft and candy like with some apple and orange. low on the phenols. pours a hazy yellow, moderate white head that dissipates quickly. taste is initially sweet followed by lots of fruitiness. slight funkiness in the finish, semi sweet finish. pretty tasty.
3.6 New Glarus just keeps pumping out solid brew after solid brew. That being said this was not outstanding, but just really well made. No hiding behind abv here. Golden pour with nice white lacing. Aroma is fruity esters, grains, floral, grassy. Taste is similar with medium sweet. Nice dry finish. Solid.
3.7 12 ounce bottle. Pours a murky gold with a nice white head. Aroma of yeast, spice, malt, and grain. Taste is yeast, wheat, clove, banana, and caramel. Very nice!!
3.5 Poured from 12oz bottle, pours a hazy gold with a really thin head and a little bit of lacing in the glass, aroma is of light fruit with some banana and clove, the flavor has some banana and fruit on the front end with a crisp finish, nice mouthfeel, not bad.
3.7 12 oz. bottle pours a cloudy golden color with decent white head and good lacing. Aroma is full of bananans, cloves, and ginger. Taste is sweet with banans dominating the flavor. Body is medium with average carbonation and a slightly sticky mouthfeel. I was surprised to find such a good abbey ale from Wisconsin in a M&M six-pack shelf. This one is definitely worth revisiting.
3.6 Bottle. The look is clear, whitish head, and golden in color. The smell is yeast, Belgian, sweet, fruit, hops, and nice. The taste is fruit, sweetness, yeast, nice, pleasant, and Belgian.
3.7 12oz bottle. Cloudy golden appearance with a decent sized white head. Aroma is of light lemon, candy sugar, honey, and light peach. Taste is of candy sugar, honey, caramel and banana walnut bread.
3.2 Bottle. Pour is hazy orange/yellow with a foamy white head. Aroma of bananas, clove, bubblegum, pale malts. Flavor is much the same but with more spice on the end - floral, pale, straw. Seems lacking in balance.
3.2 A steady pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a fat, two-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a rich gold hue that shows a brilliantly clear, light gold hue when held up to the light. The nose smells brightly of banana and clove. This is backed by soft notes of floral apple, pear and perhaps a touch of melon. Soft hay like grain aromatics add some scratchiness to the finish. The beer is quite dry, and definitely light bodied, but it has a viscous note to the finish that has it resting just a bit on the palate. The finish has lots of clove notes to it, but also has a lingering banana like note. Up front the clove also plays a prominent role, and it seems to accentuate a plum like fruitiness somehow. Soft, supporting malt notes provide a hint of straw like grain and perhaps just a touch of pale wheat crackers. This is pretty tasty, but leans towards clove and banana notes a bit too much; it needs some balancing character to it that isn’t quite here. Still, this is not a bad beer and certainly enjoyable.
3.5 Pours a bright, golden yellow, a little hazy and very carbonated, with a medium white head. The aroma is very Belgian, with lots of spice, wheat, and banana, to go along with softer orange and lemon impressions. The taste is similar. There is a lot of spices and lemon to go along with a big compliment of banana. Long aftertaste of lemon and spice. Light to medium bodied, bubbly in texture, while containing lots of fizzy carbonation. This is pretty much what I expect when I have this style. Its good, but I can’t find anything that would make it stand out over other Belgians.
3.6 Bottle, foamy, effervescent pour. Hazy gold. Deep bready/yeasty aroma with heavy clove accents. Full, wheaty malt throughout with assertive spicy phenolics. Finishes pretty dry. Interesting
3.4 12oz bottle, in NG Sampler box, purchased & sampled in Milwaukee & at home, IX-X2013. Almost like a German Weizen-yeast fermented Belgian tripel, rather like the other way around: very fruity ripe apple, clove and banana nose, with the incipient weight of B-tripel but a much easier, drier palate. Huge lively "abbey" head. Interesting crossover, not my favourite, but once again previously irreconcilable D-B-UK Old World traditions wonderfully mix in the New Country...
4.0 Pours hazy gold big fluffy white head and lots of carbonation. Aroma is yeasty with ginger and clove spice. Fairly light body very yeasty, great belgian yeast style character. Ginger, Banana, Clove. Little bit of pine hop bitterness. Easy to drink and refreshing. One of my favorite New Glarus regulars.
3.6 Bottle. Clear gold with an off-white head. Light clove and yeast aromas. Sweet circus peanuts and oily mouthfeel.
2.7 Bananas and clove. Lots of banana yeast. Saison and hefe like. Very carbonated and crisp.
