New Glarus Unplugged Abt

New Glarus Unplugged Abt

Flemish monks brewed the first Abt. A voluptuous temptress they named for their Monastery Abbot. Belgian Dark Candi Sugar encourages the decadence of rum, raisin dark chocolate and sherry like fruit tones to conspire happily in almost 20˚ Plato. Rich and full bodied this is one to lie down or if you are bold enjoy now, but take your time - linger. This beer cries to be sipped and enjoyed.

3.8 Bottle. Pours a nearly transparent dark brown with tons of dark fruits on the nose. Some candied sugar, malt and a little alcohol rounds out this beer.
4.4 Bottle courtesy of dschiller. Pours dark caramel brown with a lively off white head that disappears in seconds. Aromas are sherry, raisin, cherry, sugar and a very faint cola scent. Flavors are immaculate, big Candi Sugar, then some liquor soaked raisin, sherry fruits, some chocolate, blueberry, plum, perhaps even some peach/apricot tang and again some cola like notes. The palate is perfect, not too heavy or too carbonated; this sits beautifully on the tongue. Overall, the best example of the Abt style from an American brewery I have had to date, absolutely stupendous.
3.8 12 ounce bottle in a tulip glass, $5.99 in Madison, WI. Aroma is primarily raisins and some rum, some floral sweetness. Appearance is a dark, reddish brown without much of any foam. Taste is a lot like the nose: rum, roasted raisins, dates plums, all those sorts of fruits. It wasn’t quite as punchy as I had expected, which made it more drinkable but less bold. Palate is smooth, low carbonation, medium bodied. Overall, it’s a fine beer and very approachable. The best part was its easy-to-drink nature, which isn’t enough to make it memorable, but still makes it enjoyable nonetheless.
3.9 12oz I’ve had since my obsession with quads. Dark mahogany color with a thin pale head. Sweet rich nose. Sweet, dark fruit. Pretty tasty.
3.5 Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of fonefan. Pours a hazy reddish amber with a small off-white head. Overripe dark fruit and loads of brown sugar. Rich body, pruney and oxidized, rich burned caramel with some late hops showing. 060413

3.1 StFun supplied as an extra. Many thanks! To stemmed wine glass it pours a purplish chestnut brown with a trim, soapy off-white head. Picking up a lot of bubblegum on the nose; wet grass, tobacco, corn, table sugar, and rosemary. Tastes as it smell: bubblegum, table sugar, corn, and rosemary, with some nuttiness, yeast and a refined sugary sweetness by swallow. Drinkable, but just way too damn sweet.
4.0 3/2013 - Pours deep garnet brown. Brief tan head. Aroma of caramelized banana and raisons, hints of chocolate. On the tongue, add a hint of ginger spice to the mix. Silky on the palate, well balanced, a hint of fizz as you swallow. Medium body, with a medium finish. Finesse - doesn?t show-off, doesn?t dominate - like a fine Bordeaux compared to a fine California Cab. Props to New Glarus.11/2014 - Set aside a bottle from 2013. Still excellent. Description still holds up. Possibly a bit lighter on the palate. More dried fruit - calimyrna figs. Still complex but subtle.
3.9 Great beer. Needed a lot of age most of the sweetness is gone. This bottle was from 2009. Aroma has a vanilla coke smell.(vanilla and caramel sweetness) taste has a rich caramel and toffee taste and with a strong rummy taste. This rich full mouth feel.
3.7 This poured a murky deep dark red to brown color with a small off white head. Aroma was of dark dried fruit, grapes, light dark chocolate and yeast. Flavor was on the sweeter side, again dried figs, some grape character, some light burnt sugar and chocolate, and a bit estery. Nice.
3.5 12 ounce bottle pours a brownish red color aromas of light cocoa, caramel and some feint fruit. Flavors follow suit, mostly caramel with a mellow aftertaste of cocoa. Not as boozey as abv sugfests, nice beer overall.
4.0 The unplugged series is one Wisconsin people love! Abt is a very dark brown beer with a strong taste. But while it does have a quite bitter taste it does drink rather smooth. Certainly worth a try seeing as they only make it once!
3.7 Reddish-brown with minimal head, bubbly. Scent is caramel, dark apple. Taste is sweet, slightly woody caramel. Chocolate tones. Light and smooth. Very nice....tasty.
4.3 A - Dark red-brown with a thin finger of frothy tannish head. Fades fairly quickly. S - Dark caramel malts, candi sugars, fig, raisins, other dark fruits, Belgian yeast, clove, spices, and a bit of booze. T - Sweet caramel malts, Belgian candi sugars, fig, plum, raisins, other dark fruits, Belgian yeast, clove, other spices, some booze. M - Full bodied, moderate carbonation. Smooth and a touch thick with a warming and sweet finish. D - Very nice Quad. Great mouthfeel and overall balance. Great example of the style.
3.4 Bottle courtesy of Atom. Sweet fruity chocolate and barley malt aroma. Clear chestnut with a small off-white head. Sweet raisin and barley malt, oaky, boozy flavor. Full body.
3.5 Bottle. Apple, orange, and chocolate malt aroma. Medium brown with small head. Sweet caramel malt and light alcohol aroma. Lighter body. Not bad but not very complex.
2.7 14th May 2011 Deep brown beer, semi transparent. Tiny white head. Crispy palate. Sweet malt turning creamy. A little herb and coca cola in the undertone. Finishes smooth with a little vanilla ice cream! An odd concoction of a beer. Not horrible at all but a clunky mixture of disparate flavours.
3.2 [4740-20120818] 12floz bottle. Toasted cherry pits and burnt fruit skin aroma. Clear, dark brown amber body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head. Boozy toasted caramelized bread grain flavour. Full body. Boozy and huge, not for me. (7/4/6/3/12) 3.2 (@ Campground Brewdown 2012, Millmont, PA)
3.2 Bottle from a trade with BlackIPA. Pours clear dark reddish brown color with tan head. Aromas of dark fruits and some alcohol. Raisin and plum flavors with some candi sugar and a little alcohol. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation. Thanks Shawn.
3.2 12 oz. bottle, pours an opaque dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma of dark red fruits, brown sugar, and syrupy caramel malt. Flavour is quite strong, with loads of caramel malt, brown sugar, maple syrup and a Belgian yeasty twang. Kind of light bodied for the style, with a brown sugar and Belgian yeast finish. Decent stuff, but nowhere close to the best quads.
3.0 Pours chestnut cola, good clarity. No head and only slight lacing. nose- raisins and burnt brown sugar. taste- plums and an odd welch red grape juice followed by drying sugary finish. Carbonation is good, quite light bodied for such a sweet brew. Pretty average
3.4 12oz bottle pours a cola brown with orange highlights and a large khaki head. Aroma of raisins, cherries, caramel, candi sugars, cider like, and sweet rum. Tastes of warming rum raisin, slight chocolate, and Belgian Candi sugar. Nice although really not my thing.
3.7 Bottle: Poured a clear dark brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of candi sugar and dry fruits is quite nice with light candi ester. Taste is also a good mix between some residual candi sugar, fruit ester and dry raisins and plums with big malt backbone. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Solid interpretation of the style without being overly sweet.
3.7 2012-08-18. Very dark brown, nice beige head that fades a bit. 3+ Sweet sugary malt aroma, toasty malt accents. 7+ Similar flavour, quite malty, lightly fruity, caramel sugar accents. 7++ Smooth average plus bodied palate. Pretty nice, quite sweet and malt forward, pleasantly so. Bottle, Campground Brewdown 2012 shared by GT2
3.7 Heavy malty sweetness, caramel dried fruits, spices, cloves, fruity notes, Taste is heavy malty. Quite sweet, syrup , raisins, yeast, some apple, Toast, toffee, orange peel, dusty, figs, rock sugar. Nice
3.8 Frothy aromatic head that slowly fades on a mahogany brown. Dried dark fruit and caramel aromas with the candy sugar definitely showing through. Full bodied and dangerously drinkable. Really nice interpretation of the style.
3.2 Bottle at a tasting at Paul’s. Pours a clear caramel brown with a thin ring of light beige head around the edges. Big sweet caramel on the nose, toast and toffee. Medium bodied warm caramel and light alcohol. Finishes up with some light warmth and a bit of toffee and toast.
