Napoleon hailed this tart beer style "the Champagne of the North." A lively and elegant masterpiece this Berliner Weiss is a kaleidoscope of fresh flavor. Barrel fermentation, Pinot Grigio, Riesling grapes and Wisconsin White Wheat are bottle fermented with five proprietary yeast strains. A connoisseur’s rare jewel both spirited and subtle, enjoy your sparkling toast under summer stars.

3.7Pours a clear golden yellow with tint of amber; effervescent. An ample white head that recedes quickly leaving slight lacing. Aroma is light, not unlike a yeasty champagne. Flavor is pleasingly like a slightly dry, tart hard cider or an older champagne. Dry, mixed with a faintly sweet note of residual fruit. Overall, a different experience. Try it on a wine drinker who typically avoids beer. Great food paring opportunities. I love these New Glarus Unplugged adventures. Some are better then others, but every one has been worth the try.
3.6Bottle, courtesy Brigadier, thanks! Gold pour, big white head. Good retention/some lace. Aroma is tart, peach, white grape. Taste is tart peach, lemon, barrel, white wine. Palate is soft, creamy, light sour finish. Not particularly sour for a BW.
3.0Hazy straw colored pour, thanks to CaptainCougar. Sour peach, a touch of soap, and lemon seltzer. Nice tartness, but a big underattenuated on the finish, not quite there.
3.7Hazy pale orange-yellow pour. Funky aroma, very bready. Nice light tart flavor. Dry and lemony with slightly funky bread and sourdough. Light carbonation with good sourness.
2.4Thanks Tom! Clear yellow pour with a small sudsy head. Butyric acid, lactic acid, and cheesy funk with a lemony finish. Dry finish.
4.0Pours dark yellow/ dirty blonde with little lacing. Heavy notes of grape juice, apple and cab. Palate is thin and quenching. Flavor is initially sweet, but finishes tart on the left and right sides of my tongue Slightly metallic with a hint of funk.
3.9Bottle from the back of my stash. Can’t remember where I got it, but it looks like it’s close to 4 years old based on the commercial description. Still in pretty nice shape, though. Pours a nice honey-gold with a slight haze and a medium sized snow white head. Aroma is a bit dusty - possible from the age - but with a very nice tart and funky edge. Flavour is sweeter off the top than expected, but some tartness starts to come through in the middle, and the finish has a big and refreshing hit of lemon juice and sour grapes. Curious to know how it tasted when fresh, but certainly not a disappointment.
3.6Golden yellow with low carb. some lacing but not much. Smells a little smokey and funky. Some citrus as well, maybe a lemon zing. Really dry and not what I expected. there is a little fruit a bit of fruit but not much. Let down...
3.7From notes. First reviewed 7/20/2011. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
This pours just a touch hazy, but mostly a golden straw yellow color all the way through. Some light bubbles slowly rise from the bottom of the glass, but there is not enough to help with head retention. A 2 cm white head exists initially, then fades
The aroma is fairly grassy and sweet. Grass and wheat are the primary contributors to the aroma, with some citrus zest, white grape, and other light fruits on the edge.
Wow, the flavor is surprisingly tart up front. After letting my palate adjust, I get some light wheat flavors, and lots of lemony citrus and white grapes. After the tartness fades a bit, some grass comes through as well. The finish is still tart, but a little less than it was up front.
Even with a low ABV, the body actually holds up reasonably well. There are enough unfermentables to keep this drinking bigger bodied than it is. The carbonation is medium, mostly creamy but with a crispness as well. Slightly acidic.
This was definitely a fun experiment - my first venture into Berliners. The tartness really won me over; this is something I could drink for a while.
3.912oz bottle, been in my cellar a while. Pours a deep, yellow-amber color with a white head. Aroma is white wine, oak, a little lemon. Medium on the palate with soft carbonation. Flavor is lightly sour, wheat, the grapes give it a little sweetness, a little oak, with a dry, tart finish. Excellent.
4.2(Bottle) Pours quite hazy dark yellow to pale golden with a white head. The aroma is rather fruity with grapes, green apples and melon. Doughy wheat, acid (lacto?) and subtle spices. Hints of wet stone, wood and tart unripe yellow fruits. The flavour is light sweet to dry and medium acidic with almost no bitterness. Citric, light grapey, light wheaty and light metallic. Undertones of tart unripe fruits fruits/apples. The mouthfeel is fresh and tart with a light to medium carbonation. Citric and tart finish. Light bodied. Fantastic.
4.0Courtesy of northernbrews. Darker golden, decent white head, tiny carb bubbles. Faint tart and lactic nose, dusty malt, lemon. Flavor much the same, light lemon/lacto tartness, dusty malt. Soft billowy mouthfeel. Well done session. Probably would score even better had I not waited to rate for so long.
3.512oz traded bottle. I assume this bottle is from 08 and the age might have thinned it out a little making the finish muted. I liked the level of tartness though because it was not overpowering where you needed to cut it with something sweet.
3.9A: Golden-orange.. almost like a clearer fuji apple juice... moderate white cap.. light lacing left on the glass.
S: Sour apples, banana, yeast, funk, light wheat notes..
T: Juicy, tart and sour fruit notes... apple, banana and yeast dominate a subtle wheat base... pleasantly complex yet forceful.
M: Smooth. Puckering sour and tart finish.
O: I can handle the sourness and funky tartness, but barely... mere mortals might not be able to finish this :)
3.512oz bottle from mikesgroove shared with MartinT.
Appearance : Clear yellow with a small head. Nice head retention, some lacing.
Aroma : Lots of white grapes with light lactic notes. Some peaches too.
Taste : Lactic with lots of grapes and other fruits. Sweet grapes with wheat. Finish has notes of wheat and white grapes. Light astringent notes on finish.
Overall : Different Berliner Weisse. Much sweeter than most examples of the style. Not as sharp and clean. Still nice citrusy tartness with nice wheat. Interesting white grapes profile but a bit too sweet. Interesting but not exactly what one would hope from a Berliner Weisse.
3.4My Bottom Line :
White grapes and peaches reach a chubby wheat middle before plunging into a mineral and lemony finish.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A veil of foam covers the misty honeyed blond.
-Is it me or the white grapes are that harmonious with the prevalent wheat?
-This was not as dry as I expected.
-The finishing tartness was quite pleasant, but I would have liked this citrusy, lactic personality to be present before the finale.
-Carbonation is effervescent, but soft.
-The mineral character is akin to moist rocks...

2.9Cellared by mistake... This beer smells and tastes faded. I remember this beer having a nice playful flavor when it was fresh. I found it when I was looking thru the throw in portion on my cellar tucked into a 4 pack with some cranbic. I suspect the cranbic is holding up much better...
3.5Poured from a bottle into a glass thanks to Soonami. Very light beer on the tongue, like all good beers of the style, but not as much flavor as some others that I had. Not sure age has been kind to it. Still a very nice beer though.
3.8Bottle (huge thanks to Skyview). Sour, musty lemon and malt aroma. Cloudy amber color with moderate head. Sweet-tart lemon and wheat malt flavor. Excellent - needs to be a regular.
4.3Bottle @ home, courtesy of some neato dude. Semi cloudy yellow orange appearance with a white head. Sour, lemon-orange citrusy, wheat nose. Tart, lemon, orange citrusy, wheat flavor with a carbonated mouthfeel. Awesome brew! Man I really enjoy this beer!
3.4Bottle. From notes. Clear, pale golden body with a frothy, white head. Light aroma with the tartness coming through in the nose in the form of tart apples and a hint of sour milk. The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter and moderately acidic. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly bitter and moderately acidic. Thin body and lively carbonation. Detectable wheat notes in its slick, milk-like texture. Very tart, nicely refreshing, but with a lingering lactic sourness that’s a little off-putting.
3.3bottle, from trade with GeneralGao 1/2009. Consumed 5/2/11. Ok aroma, tart, green apple, minor yeasty funk. Orangy gold color, good head that faded, no lace though. Sour flavor. Lite body, thin watery mouthfeel, tart dry finish. Tasty, very easy to drink, looked good in the glass. always look forward to a New Glarus offering. Thanks GeneralGao
3.7Reviewed from notes.
Pours a light yellow with a bit of an orange tint. Light white head and a tad bit of lacing. Nose brings some very light fruits as well as a bit of lactic sourness. Taste is light lemon and peach with some slight sourness and a bit of grain. Slightly tart feel with good carbonation and a light body. Drinks really really well and certainly doesn’t need any syrup.

11/11/11/9/11/11
3.612oz bottle thanks to footbalm, you’re the man
Appearance: Pours slightly hazy golden with a medium sized white head and some lacing
Aroma: Tart apples
Taste: Tart apples and cherries, citrus, woody, and champagne like mouthfeel in the finish
A nice beer.
3.7Bottle. Pours a pale golden body with a white head. Fizzy body with a light funk y sourness. Earth y funky notes, light lemons. Bittersweet with a light woody tone citrus, lemon and a hint of spices. Light tart body, very quaffable with just enough flavor. Nice offering.
3.6Bottle. Poured in to my BFC Dynamo Berlin glass. Golden, with a pinkish hint. Big white head. The aroma is sweet of pilsner malt, with touch of berry sourness. Elegant. The taste is vinous, small grape bitterness, small touch of berry seeds. This berliner weisse has an almost champagnesque quality. Dangerously sparkling and elegant. Overall a fun beer to try, refreshing and sweet.
4.2The beer pours a light straw gold with that is cloudy. The head is white with light retention and good lacing.
The aroma is light with mostly honey hops.
The taste is what’s special here and its very unique. It is a tart vinegar at first but upon further reflection it really is similar to eatting a granny smith apple. Overall its a great taste that is very drinkable. Mouthfeel is good.
3.8I had kept this in the fridge for some time, which one shouldn’t do to a beer normally this delicate, but it doesn’t seem to have hurt this anyway. The sourness that hits you here is cited by others who have rated this. At any rate, that effect is lovely, setting in after a fruit front quickly leaves the palate. After that it settles into a yeastiness and slightly musty wood flavor, all of which are plainly detectable in the aroma. Yellow with a considerable but attractive carbonation, which remains even after some time sitting. Combined with the sourness it makes for a good palate. Very nice beer, whether or not it actually matches the supposed expectations for a Berliner Weisse. Bottle.
3.012 oz red foiled bottle.
Pours a pale yellow color with a slight hint of gold and a foamy and active white head. Reminds me of a Euro lager.
Smell is fruity, spicy, and funky. Does not remind me of the other traditional Berlinner Weisse’s I’ve had other than a light sour lemon scent, it is more like a sour lager.
The beer itself is a bit too light, and I know this style is but this is ultra-light. There is a bit of lemon sour above some lifeless wheat notes. It is just not as refined as it could be.
The Unplugged series is hit or miss, while this one isn’t too bad it isn’t a stalwart of the style.
