3.8 Bottle from Homer321! Pours a nice dirty brown, aroma is fruity. Lots of dark fruits on this, the caramel I am accustomed to is not here. Solid beer and the abv is non-existent.
4.2 12oz bottle, shared by alexsdad06. Clear red brown color. Thin khaki head. Good dots of lace. Nice earthy hop nose. Great dark fruit, vinous, chocolate malts. Big smooth, kind of creamy body. Light carbonation. No sticky finish. Good light sweet taste, a good light bitterness. Alcohol is very well hidden, no burn at all, surprisingly easy to drink for the ABV. Age must have done wonders for this. Very interesting complex aftertaste. Earthy dark fruit, hint of chocolate, some flavors I very much enjoy in barleywines show in a cool way here. Huge thanks to Brad for sharing.
3.7 Aged bottle pour - side by side with NG Thumbprint series barley wine. Pours opaque mahogany - almost no head to speak of. Aroma - candied sugars, brown sugar, booze, hint of dark fruit - very sweet overall, but very boozy! Flavor is similarly boozy - sweet malts, brown sugar, dark fruits, slight hint of bitterness at finish. Palate is long lasting with a slight alcohol burn - not bad overall. Not as good as the younger barley wine, but still a pretty good offering.
3.6 Pours a clear deep amber/ruby with a thin off white head. Aroma has boozy dark fruits. Flavor has dark fruits...almost port wines with candy sugar. Mouthfeel is medium and sticky with an earthy/bitter fruity finish.
3.9 Coffee color, no head. Some malty aroma. Nice boozy barleywine, good sweet malt. Little carbonation, thick body, nice beer overall.
3.4 12 oz. bottle, sent from javit (thanks Adam), pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma of rich dark dried fruits (dates, figs, grapes), brown sugar and alcohol. Flavour of rich dark dried fruits, such as prunes, figs and dates, lots of boozy liqueur and some brown sugar, though this is not cloyingly sweet. Quite boozy - the ice-bocking obviously bringing it more to the front. Medium complexity with lots of depth. Very enjoyable barley wine, though missing some element(s) of complexity to push it into the elite league.
3.7 Admitedly, I am probably having this a bit past its prime. Not that it’s gone bad, but it wasn’t quite as awesome as I was hoping for.
3.0 31st August 2012 THE Barleywine tasting. Clear very dark brown beer, not much of a head. Light dry palate, smooth. Nice smooth malts here but by God this is a salty bastard of a beer, too much so. Could hardly taste anything else. Finishes semi dry.
4.4 I have a different iced barley wine than the picture given. It actually has a black wax top. I am not sure what year this is from but the moment I opened the bottle the overwhelming smell of alcohol engulfed my nose. Aroma: alcohol with a bit of smokeyness to it, there are subtle hints of caramel to it, however the alcohol really masks all other aromas here. Appearance: Pours a dark, clear, brown with a little white head that dissipates quickly. Taste: This is a heavy beer with a big alcohol taste right up front. Once the alcohol mellows off in the mouth you get a slight bitter sweet in the aftertaste. Palate: Little to no carbonation with a think and full bitter sweet after taste. Overall: A great beer, but a big beer. With the predominant alcohol feel, this is an acquired taste, but many barley wines are this way and this is my favorite style of beer!
3.1 Bottle @ THE Barley Wine Tasting. The pour’s deep brown with a small off-white head. The nose is cinnamon, some boozy wood. Notes of red fruits, cherry. The taste is fruitcake, spice, heavy salty plum and more cinnamon. Chocolate. Medium body, but weirdly salty, plenty of mineral. Overall, pretty meh.
3.1 Bottle, thanks to Ken at THE Barley Wine Tasting, August 2012. It pours deep brown, with a small beige head. The nose is caramel, salt, wood, earth, varnish and sweet liquorice. The taste is leather, varnish, saltiness, wood, earth, burnt notes and a touch of dark fruit, with a very dry finish. Full body, fine carbonation and slightly oily mouth-feel. Surprisingly salty! So-so.
3.6 Two year old aging. Rich malty aroma, not boozy but the alcohol is there. Cocoa coloured body, thicker looking, no head. Full mouthfeel. Taste of chocolate and other malt, a bit of fig. Thanks FlandersNed.
4.0 Received in trade from MeadMe, thanks for the opportunity. Pours a slightly murky dark brown with ruby highlights and a smallish head the dissipates before I set the bottle down. Smells like a well aged fruity, caramel, ethanol, barleywine. It does actually smell pretty good, but it does smell a bit potent. The taste is sweet caramel and fruity with a hint of earth and enough heat to keep some balance. This one is tasty, but it is a sipper. Medium to thick body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet syrupy mouthfeel. Nice brew that I’m glad I finally got to try. Nice sipper for a cold June night ;)
4.1 Received this bottle in a trade (BA) a couple years ago. I’m guessing this is pushing 3-4 years old at this point. Kept in a cool dark cellar since I received it. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a dark mahogany with just the slightest bit of lace as a cap. The nose is rich with wet woodsy notes, deep molasses, a bit of booze, and toasted caramel. The mouth is full, a bit oily, and heavy. This is a sipper, no doubt. Sherry-like flavors, raisin, plum, toffee, gingersnaps. Ethanol-burn on the finish. This is a really well-crafted beer, that stood the test of time for sure. A real treat.
3.5 Bottle at the TURD tasting. Pours amber with an off white head. Sweet toffee and toasty malty aroma with lighter hoppy notes. The flavor has sweet malts, toffee, toast, and floral hops. Good, not great.
3.5 Bottle at Max’s for the Turd Tasting. Pours a deep mahogany with white lacing. Aroma is sweet barley and sugary malts, brown sugar and light hop. Mouthfeel is nice with sweet, earthy notes of barley, dark fruit, and malts. Ok.
3.6 Bottle at MaxxDaddy’s tasting. Pours dark copper brown. Nose/taste of concentrated barleywine - toffee, caramel, some cherry wood, toasted malt and herbal notes. Medium body.
3.2 Amber pour with tan head. Super sweet malt and hop toned aromas. Flavor follows, alcohol bite isnt overlookable. Barleywine concentrated...
3.0 From notes. The beer itself is a medium brown color, transparent with a tiny off-white island of a head. The aroma is caramel, toasted bread, cereal grains, a bit of pine hops, and a good dose of alcohol. The flavor follows the nose nicely. There is a strong booze flavor that is mostly masked by the strong iced barleywine flavors. Caramel first, bready and roasted malt next, a bit of spice, and a flat bitter finish at the end. The body on this is pretty huge. Carbonation is on the light side, with a grainy, boozy feel overall.
4.2 Big thanks to FlandersNed. Missed out on this a few years back. Deepest of brown with red hues and a decent amount of tan head. Big dark fruit with some acidity, cherry, toasted malt, light skunked/herbal hops, and a hint of booze. Mild oxidation. Flavor is sticky sweet caramel and toasted/lightly roasted malts and dark cherries. Relatively well-hidden alcohol and some aged tangy hops in the finish. Big time warming on the way down. Jello-like mouthfeel. The high alcohol content cleans out the palate, leaving behind some fruity malt, toasted malt and light hop bitterness, but not heavy, sticky malt. Makes it way too easy to keep drinking. Nice as can be, even 2-3 years later.
3.4 Bottled received in a BIF on BA. Pours a deep tawny brown with a minimal head. Nose is still incredibly boozy with a sherry like sweetness, heavy malt, rum soaked raisin, and dark fruit. Flavor is strangely still very bitter for being such an old beer. There is some dark fruit and caramel sweetness as well with some booziness. Mouthfeel is heavy with light to medium carbonation and warming booziness. Was hoping this would be smoother at this point, but it was sadly kinda tough to drink. Definitely a sipper.
3.5 Nose is initially rum soaked raisins, then fades into intense bready malts. Pours a deep amber with a bit of off white foam. Taste is nice - less sweet than I would have expected. A bit of caramel malt, and a fairly harsh bitter finish. Feel is dry and a bit boozy. Medium bodied. An intense beer.
2.8 I think this would have been a great IPA release but barley wine... I think not.
3.5 12oz bottle. Nice brown pour with a thin off white head. Fairly typical for a BW. Nose and taste was fairly big on toffee, caramel, toasted malt and hops. A bit too hoppy for my liking with this style.
4.1 12oz bottle courtesy of ohlrangers. Pours a clear light brown with a few bubbles around the outside. Aroma is toffee, with a little chocolate in the background. Body is medium-full. Flavor is also sweet toffee with a little vanilla. Slight alcohol heat. Very nice!
3.1 12oz bottle shared at the QC tasting, pours a dark reddish amber with a very thin head, the aroma was very sweet with caramel and dark fruit, the flavor was of light dark fruit and mainly booze, seemed very thin for a barley wine, I really wanted more out of this one.
3.8 Bottle. Brown amber pour with a white head. Aroma and taste are boozy and caramel. Very good beer.
3.2 Bottle @ home, courtesy of Ughsmash. Thanks again! Dark brown appearance with a cream colored head. Rich caramel, plum, fig, dark fruity, slightly boozy aroma. Extremely potent, fig, raisin, dark fruity, caramel, leathery flavor with a fairly boozy, potent finish. Interesting enough but it’s very strong.
3.8 Pours amber with a light tan ring for a head. Aroma is caramel malts, brown sugar and wood. Flavor is caramel malts, toffee and dried fruits. Medium bodied with a nice sweet finish.
3.7 12 oz. bottle from dbsdelight- thanks, Dan! He had a 2009 sticker on the cap. Pours a deep, clear amber with a tiny beige ring for a head. Aroma of caramel malts, toast, brown sugar, wood, earth, cereal, and resin. Flavor of toffee, toasted brown sugar, sherry, graham cracker, and dried fruits. Medium-bodied, with a sweet, sticky mouthfeel and low carbonation. Rich. Nice.
