"Some people paint, some sing, others write...I brew." --Daniel Carey A few times a year we will cut Dan loose to brew whatever he chooses, uncensored, uncut, unplugged. The bottle you hold is handcrafted for the adventurous soul. We brewed this one small batch, and make no promises to ever brew this style again. Warning: Caution. Our Imperial IPA will smack you In-Your-Face. This is an aggressively hoppy IPA. An explosion of hops including East Kent Golding, Cascade, Tomahawk, Warrior and Chinook dominate this pale summer brew. IBUs delivered like you’ve never enjoyed before. Our imperial IPA is alive with a bottle fermentation that catapults hop aromas to the front with bitter notes that will dance till dawn on your palate. Serve immediately at 45 degrees F. 3.312oz bottle. Don’t ask me why is held on to this, but I did. Pours a hazy, golden amber color with a white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, honey, maybe a few faint remnants of some citrus hops. Medium on the palate with light carbonation. Flavor is sweet, more honey, malt, bready, with just a light touch of bitterness at the end. I remember this being excellent fresh. Now it has morphed into a mediocre barleywine.
3.4120z bottle from chimney .. . pours a hazy gold .. medium foam, great lacing .. . tidy finish from young at ajax, 1-0 .. . mellow stuff .. light on the hops, the abv is tame too .. . decent but probably a different beast when fresh .. . .
time to re-educate you dunce-bags. We’ll start with US presidents. This was our first president, George Washington. Let’s review. Who was our first president?
a pickle jar?
4.0Hazy yellow-gold pour, off white head. Aroma is malt forward, some dank hops, brown sugar, cookies. Flavor is lightly hoppy, cake, bread, brown sugar. 2005 and it holds up this well? Damn.
3.7Bottle pours orange-copper with a dense, creamy eggshell head. Aroma explodes with dank hops, showing notes of grapefruit pith, pine resin, pineapple, florals, and a touch of catty funk. Flavor shows the same with additional light caramel notes as well as an underlying herbal quality. Overall body is moderate and the finish is moderately bitter.
3.8Thanks to GhostFace for this one as a bonus. Pours hazy orange with a white head. Nose is great amount of malt followed by a quick hop wallop. I get a bit of pine followed by some honey and orange. Flavor has all manner of citrus, once the pine begins to fade. I get orange, apricot, and bits of peach with some honey. Light to medium in body with lingering sweet citrus in the finish.
4.3Nice copper pour with a thick white head. Aroma is citrusy hops with a malty background. Flavor is in your face huge citrus hops, but mellowed with the malts. Fantastic stuff! I need more of this!
3.8Tasted at Dstructo/Daknole tasting. Not sure who brought this one. Floral hoppy aroma with a nice malt backing in the flavor. Hints of citrus and grapefruit in the flavor as well.
3.6Bottle, as pictured. Was somewhat letdown by this one, surprisingly. Not as hoppy as I was expecting. Poured pretty much a clean gold with a bit of a head. Smelled and tasted as expected, hops, some citrus. Just not as much bite as I wanted. Not their best.
3.6Bottled sample via and shared with oakbluff. Light orange in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of papaya, white pepper, and mild citrus. Green hops on the palate, with more tropical fruit, booze, and dry pale malt. Assertive bitterness and light bodied. Definitely in the same ballpark as some west coast IIPAs, but with a different hop profile. A bit hot for my taste, but still good.
4.1The Dan Journal #465. Tasted 5/5/11. 12oz bottle. Pours hazy with a golden honey hue. Moldy, lacing off-white head. Aromas of soapy hops and grapefruit with a touch ginger and a doughy mild malt note. Medium to full bodied with muted malts and candied hops. A bitter palate, but rounded out with sweet hoppy undertones. Tangy and tart with tangerine, orange and grapefruit hop flavors. Very well hidden 9%! Subtle graham cracker malty flavors. Very nicely done!
3.4Lots happening in this one, it had good malty character and a nice hoppy finish. Definitely a little weak on the hops as I was expecting but overall it was pretty tasty and would have again
3.7Bottle at Dark Lord Day. Thanks a lot for the share. Poured light brown with small head. Has a good sweetness that works for this particular beer. Not as hoppy as I expected but it is very solid.
3.812oz bottle. Rating #161. Golden/orange pour with a nice white head. Great aroma, nice citrus and light pine. Flavor was a little onion, but in a good way, nice bitterness and a damn fine brew. (1694)
4.3Pours a brilliant gold in my snifter, with a thick white head. Aroma is huge citrusy hops with bready/toasty background. Body is full with nice carbonation. Flavor is again huge citrusy hops, but balanced with toasty malt. Crisp, super-smooth finish.
3.612 oz. bottle from shigadeyo. Pours a slightly hazy honey color with a small fizzy white head that disappears. The aroma came bursting out of the bottle and still had a surprising amount of hop character: sweet, ripe fruits, still some citrus and pine, grapefruit all with a sweet caramel maltiness. The flavor opened with some caramel malt and ripe fruit, but also had a good amount of earthy bitterness through the finish. Pine resin and grapefruit are also there. There are hints of oxidation and this has drifted toward being a barley wine, but I am surprised how well this has maintained some hop character. The alcohol remains well hidden in the flavor. Medium bodied with a slight burn as it goes down. I would have liked a chance at this fresh for comparison sake.
3.8Dark semi hazy orange color with a small white head. Aroma is nice. Sweet juicy hops, some citrus and a bit of tropical fruit. Flavor is not too overly hopped. Juicy tropical hop flavors and not bitter. Smooth, nice body great finish.
3.2Traded bottle. Pours a nice clear bronze colour with an off-white head and nice lacing. Pleasant pine, hop aroma plus a little caramel. Hops in the flavour are more piney than citrus (not bad). The finish is what gets me though...seems fairly medicinal and ethanol-y. Okay.
3.6Bottle shared by shigadey.
Poured clear copper color with an average fizzy off-white head that was mostly diminished with minimal lacing. Moderate to heavy sour citrus hop and small malt aroma. Medium body with slick texture and flat carbonation. Medium smooth bittersweet hoppy flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration.
This is was a good beer.
3.6Bottle at pauls tasting. Pours a pale golden body with half inch white head. Sweet pine and grapefruit dominate the nose. Lost of earthy undertones in the flavor, grassy hop resins light butter and a malty caramel. Good brew.
4.812 ounce red-foil topped bottle
Out-f$^#ing Standing!!!!
Pours a fantastic hazy light orange with a 1-1/2" white fluffy head. Great lacing left. Moderate carbonation streams to the top. Big on the nose. Very hoppy, earthy, citrusy grapefruit, piney, all the usual culprets in a great IPA. The taste was amazing. Great hops up front balanced very well with the malts. Buttery mouthfeel. Very easy to drink as the alcohol is undetectible. A damn shame that it won’t be brewed again anytime soon, if ever.
4.1Review from notes from summer 2005, bottle as part of a mixed Unplugged 4-pack.
Beer pours a brilliant orange, think sun-setting orange. Head is an off-white color that leaves a pretty good lacing. Smell is hoppy, but not the typical piney/resiny hops you normally find in a double IPA, this has a more floral smell to it. There are a bit of citrus-like hops hidden in there as well. In the taste I found a bit of caramel from the malt, but the hops lead the way throughout this beer. The hops are a nice mixture of floral and citrus flavors. Medium bodied and a decent amount of carbonation. Really drinkable, as this seems to be a more tame version of a double IPA. This doesn’t necessarily fit the "Unplugged" label, but it’s still a damn good beer.
3.4Golden, orange colour with a white head. Light caramel sweet aroma with hoppy fruity and pine bitter notes. Sweet malty flavor with fruity and hoppy notes. Light dry and bitter finish.

I would like to rerate this beer.
The score was calculated based upon the notes and an old scoring system.
3.7Bottle. Golden clear colour with a huge white head. Very nice aroma of citrus and high alpha hops. Nice flavour of hops, specially citrus-like, very tasty and nice.
3.4Bottled. Golden coloured. Uncl3ear. Off white small head. Sweetness, pine, fruits, citrus and herbal aroma. Caramel, sweetness, pine, herbs and light spice in the flavour. Meidum bodied. Has a medium bitter and dry end.
3.3(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of Thomas_E. Hazy, amber golden with an off-white head. Hoppy, lightly citrusy aroma. Medium body, some light caramel accents, some fruit and weak, woody notes. The finish is solidly bitter. Somehow this fails to really deliver. 270607
3.1Botted. Slightly hazy amber coloured. Rather hoppy aroma and flavour. Also sweet and fruity. Quite dry and bitter finish. Medium to full bodied.
4.0Big thanks to KingpinIPA for this one - I know its recently retired, but I think its still worth a try. Golden-amber color with a medium, but persistent white head. Big sugary aroma with some citrus, candy, and a bit of pine. Flavor is very sweet with some citrus and grass, though not as bitter as I’m sure it once was. Still very flavorful - I’ve had plenty of DFH 90 min thats past its prime and this one is at least as good. Oh if only they’d make it again........
3.9A somewhat subdued ,but distinct malt-hop mix orangey hops become dominant, ,cloudy orangish yellow appearance, taste is a muddled sweet malt and orange pine malt, and plenty of sideline alcohol. I notice that these big IMP IPA’s all get this very non fresh taste after aging,I should have reviewed this when it first came out. Don’t hold on to this any longer
3.9Pours golden peach colored and fairly clear for a bottle fermented product. Smells of sweet pale malts, pine tree, and a little lemon. Taste is sweet lemon first across the tongue followed by a load of grassy bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied with more hop than malt prevelance. Enjoyable imperial IPA.
