New Glarus Unplugged Imperial Saison

New Glarus Unplugged Imperial Saison

Our Imperial Saison captured a bold celebratory shout of apricot and peach in a bottle. Both bright and bold this is a lively truly living beer. Bottle conditioned with rare Belgian yeast and soured to illuminate its copper hued body. Ginger and Grains of Paradise promiscuously dance with Styrian Golding hops. Wipe winter from your brow and enjoy now or attempt to resist its siren song and lay down in your cellar.

3.6 Yeasty, slightly sour, and somewhat peppery/spicy on the nose. Appearance is a dirty copper with a bold head leaving nice lacing. Taste is unique...some fruit hits up front (apricot?) before it turns spicy and finishes with a glaring tartness...a puzzling sipper. Something in the finish is a bit odd to be completely honest...nothing unintended (or at least I don’t think) but its just peculiar. Palate starts bold, and finishes a bit thin. as this warmed, the sour character came through and made it a more appealing, yet slow, drink. This has had about 2.5 years in the cellar, and I honestly can’t remember trying it fresh, but this is a very unique brew from NG...but far from my favorite offering by Mr Carey
3.6 Thanks to madmitch for that one. Bottle looks really good, simple but good. Beer in the glass brownish, huge head. Starts mild, fine spicy, modest sourish. Fruity notes of plum and melon. Finish intense fruity, mild malty-spicy, still sourish. Not too drinkable, but a beer to enjoy!
3.6 Bottle thanks to Ofortuna, thanks man! Poured a lightly hazy amber-orange color with a moderate, dense off-white head that slowly receded to a bubbly layer leaving some small spots of lacing. Aroma of fruits (apricot, peach, lemon), a light spiciness (ginger), a honey-touched breadiness, and a soft tart yeastiness. Smooth, moderately sweet, fruity entry with nice hints of peach and apricot that lingers into a lightly tart, lemony middle that is paired with a lightly spicy, honey graham cracker sweetness that follows into the finish where it lingers softly with some light hints of dry hops peaking through, Crisp, lively carbonation that just asks you to drink it. Overall, it isn’t really a great example of a saison, as others have pointed out. It is a beer that tastes good and has a lively, inviting palate. I wish I would have drank it sooner, but it was still pretty dang good. Thanks again Ofort.
3.9 A: Nice orange to light amber body with a delicious looking off-white cap.. superb lacing. S: Horse farm funk, apricot, peaches, green apple, yeast and slight pepper in the back end. T: Wow. As many here have said a surprisingly tart fruit profile (apricots and peaches)... I like it, it complements the funky/yeasty notes typical to the saison style... nicely spiced... M: Light bodied.. good carbonation levels.. not as crisp as a finish as I’d prefer for the style.. refreshing O: A delightful brew.. I don’t know what an imperial saison is, but I like it! Many thanks to mnjeff for the trade!
3.6 12 oz bottle. Cloudy golden pour with white head and some retention. Nose & taste of yeast, hay, pale malts, light fruit, and soap. Some barnyard funk but not enough for my tasted
3.7 Pours a very dark golden orange color with a frothy two finger white head that slowly settles into a thin crown. Sporadic spots of lacing left behind. Slightly earthy aroma with some funky saison yeast countered by some zesty spice, bread, alcohol and light fruit. Subtle grassy barnyard character with hints of apple, pear and peach balancing things out. Creamy medi body with tight carbonation and a heavy spice presence up front. Hintsnof pepper, clove and and coriander followed by estery fruits, bread and alcohol. Well balanced and complex with a dry finish. Slightly tart with hints of apple, pear and light grapes with a touch of earthy hops toward the end of the palate. refreshing and deceptively drinkable.
3.5 12oz bottle, purchased at Discount Liquor a while ago. Pours a bright orange color with a white head. Aroma is fruity, citrus, lemon, maybe some orange or peach, some yeast. Medium body on the palate with average carbonation. Taste is a little sweet, a little bitter, with flavors of citrus, lemon, Bread, yeast, with a dry, bitter finish.
3.6 Bottle:   Deep orangish amber, hazy, large fizzy off-white head, spotty lacing.   I get this odd Banana Laffy Taffy nose... while not a big fan of Laffy Taffy, I find the aroma intriguing.   Fruity, sweet, malty, and also with a fleeting bit of that Banana Laffy Taffy.   Warming, but not alcoholic.   Not floral or really barnish.   Has more of an Ameican Triple like breadiness that emerges.   Unique, and very interesting.   Bubbley on the tongue, also tart.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Would probably feel heavier if it were for the bubbliness of it.   Finish has a bit of soapiness to it, but it doesnt detract much.   This one was an interesting one becuase it didnt have the big barnish/floral aspects one would associate with the style.   However, given its an Imperial example... who knows what that exactly means.   As is, good, unique, and worthy of having again.   I take that back, there is a bit of floral aspect there... shallow, but its there.   Tasty!
3.6 12oz bottle A: tart green apples, sweet caramel malts, hints of peach T:peach, caramel, tart apple This beer was a bit hot with alcohol. It does finish sweet, it feels like a fall beer not spring/summer beer. Overall I really enjoyed it.
3.0 a bit to sweet for my liking for a saison. Pours an bright yellow with a fizzy white head that fades quickly. sweet summer fruit nose and taste with a touch of hay. Not a crisp and sharp as I thought it should be.
3.3 (12oz bottle) clearish gold with creamy lasting tan head. Nose of sweet apricot, honey, and a bit of wet wood. Taste of apricot, very spicy, alcohol, coriander and a syrupy sweet finish.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a golden color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty caramel and dark fruit aroma. Sweetish fruity and slightly sour spicy yeasty flavor. Has a fruity spicy sour yeasty finish.
3.4 A: The pour is a slightly hazed golden-orange color with a rather large white head. S: Lemon zest is the most prominent aroma on this beer. It’s got an almost lemon drop candy aroma to it with all the sugary sweetness. Some yeast and a light spiciness with some oranges. T: The flavor is pretty much exactly the same as lemon drop candies. Sweet sugar and more sugar with a bit of malt. A little bit of yeast and spice esters in there as well as some grass/straw. M: Medium in body with a medium to high carbonation. O: A pretty decent beer, but the sweetness was a little much for me.
2.6 Aroma is caramel and sweet, with a weird spicy yeast note. Flavor is very upfront acidic, with notes of citrus and weird spicy hops. Earthy finish but an inappropriate malt center.
3.9 Reviewed from notes. Pours a nice amber color. A bit dark for a normal saison, but what the hell--this one is from Wisconsin. Nose brings forward some really nice characteristics with a bit of light malt plus some earth, caramel, light fruits, and some mild hay. The flavor is a bit sweet and not nearly as dry as many saisons. Good fruit notes and nice malt. Medium body with good carbonation. This was quite the tasty brew and I’m disappointed that I finally ran out of these; hopefully it gets brewed again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-29-2010
Ziemlich hefig-bananiger Abgang. 10/8/7/8/11/8
3.4 22 April 2011, bottle w/ cgarvieuk. med dark yellow with some tan in it. great nose. alcohol and apricots. like a barley wine but apricots instead of raisins. med body and moderately fizzy. big alcohol and apricots. some yeast in the background and some dry cologne (?). really interesting. i like this.
3.2 Bottle at home .... light dark amber ... soft sweet honeyed fruits ... light fizzy ... sweet juicy fruits ... apricot ... light toffee ... some lemon ... ligth sourness
4.0 The beer pours a dark gold with a little orange. It has crazy carbonation bringing about a finger off-white head that has great retention and lacing. The head itself is nice and creamy. The aroma is pretty light, smells like any other saison. The tatse is awesome, not at all what I was expecting and not at all like a saison. It starts out pretty sweet, actually is a little sour and finishes better, very complex. The feel is ok, decent drinkability. Probably, one of my favorite saison’s, mostly because it doesn’t taste like one.
4.0 Bottle in Iowa City hotel. Hazy orange body with a big orangish white head. Spicy, yeasty, apricot, wild Belgian ale aroma. Sweet, yeasty, and quite fruity that’s somewhat spicy and a light sourness with hints of peach and other light fruits. Sweet, yeasty finish. Not a traditional saison but a tasty, somewhat fruity Belgian ale nonetheless.
2.9 12oz bottle thanks to jjfoodie. Murky orangish brown colored brew, fizzy off-white head. Boozy aroma, smells of peaches and bubblegum. Flavor is doughy, estery yeast, and more peach. Not bad - a tab on the hot side for under 9%.
2.6 Thanks John! .. . Pours a dark murky tan, big fizzy head that dies down completely .. . very sharp! the booze is so apparent.. . flavours of peach skin, yeast, and light fruit- with a boozy kick on every cringing sip .. . someone you really have to prime up to, a bit much for the first beer of the evening.. . So it turns out there’s life on other planets. Boy, this is really going to change the Miss Universe contest, you know what I mean?
3.9 12 oz bottle in trade from Lushawn. Huge thank you! Golden amber with a solid head. Nose is great! High fruitiness and spice. Pear and peach. Taste is great too. Lots of spicy movement and middle sweetness. Lovely.
3.9 Mayne this shit got me jazzy. It pours a nice golden hue with a foamy white head. It has an abundance of fuity flavors and some spiciness.
3.9 A- Body is a uniformly translucent golden hue. Pours with a 2-3 finger foamy white headwhich eventually fades to 1/2 finger and leaves traces of lacing behind in the glass. S- Nose is mild-with lemon, floral hops, and bready yeast. A hint of funk is there as well. T- Initial flavor is loaded with lemon. A hint of floral hops accent the flavor with a bready yeast backbone and a hint of yeast funk. Floral hops are the higlight of the finish as well as a blast of citrus flavor. A hint of floral hop bitterness lingers with some citrus. M- High carbonation and a light to medium weight, slightly dry body. D- This is a good saison overall-it has a lot more lemon presence than most. Job well done by New Glarus. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-04-2010 03:56:25
3.8 Bottle from Matt (madvike). Murky orange-brown, pinkish body, medium dense off-white head. Estery nose with clove, bubblegum, and bread dough, also sugary. Complex, estery body, dusty, with bread dough, lemon, peach, and tangy wheat, tart, with an herbal finish. The different elements come together seamlessly. Yum.
3.6 12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy orange amber color with a large yellowish beige head. The aroma is a combo of bready caramel malt and fruits with a hint of yeast. The flavor has a pleasing dose of apricot, apples, and other fruits with sweet caramel and fresh bread. This has a mild tartness. Definitely interesting, but a strange style.
3.3 12oz traded bottle of unknown vintage. Pours a cloudy, orange color with a medium white head and sticky lacing. Relatively light aroma of banana, Belgian yeast, peach, maybe some spice and a little sour note. Pretty busy flavor that starts with a nice sourness but then just fades into a strange, flat, bitterness? I get some Belgian notes but they are fleeting. Alcohol a little more prominent but expected based on the description
3.6 Orange with fluffy white head. Aroma of light fruits, apricot, floral hops. Flavor is tart, sour, pear, apricot, pinot grigio, apple. Crisp and light dry finish. Some yeasty flavor. Light body with copious carbonation. Alcohol is somewhat apparent.
3.2 12oz bottle pours a hazy, translucent deep orange amber with a very thick, frothy white head. Nose had a lot of bubblegum, nail plolish remover, perfume, some wheat, some light citrus, a little medicinal. Flavor is sweet, candy, a touch sour like a big berliner weiss, bubblegum, grass, vegetal, flower petals, rose water, honey. Full bodied, sweet, lightly puckering finish. Heavy carbonation detracts a bit. Kind of weird.
