New Glarus Wisconsin Belgian Red

New Glarus Wisconsin Belgian Red

Originally 5.1% - abv reduced to 4% sometime between 2009 and 2011.

Belgian Red is a tapestry of flavor. This beer is brewed with whole Montmorency Cherries, Wisconsin farmed wheat and Belgian roasted barleys, lagered in oak tanks and balanced by Hallertau hops we aged in our brewery one full year.

Over a pound of Door County Cherries in every bottle makes this beer uniquely “Wisconsin.” So unique, in fact, that we applied for a patent. Expect this beer to be ruby red, with a medium body that is highly carbonated and intense with cherry flavor and bouquet. [ABV was previously indicated as 5.1%?; website lists it as 4%. -kmweaver]

4.1 Odd but good. Very tart but the sweetness fades very quick. I can’t explain it but I like it. Very very unique brew.
4.0 Tasted @ the 1997 Oregon Brewer's Festival
4.1 Bottle st share. Murky pour, muddy violet color, thin ring of head. Aroma recalls a freshly opened jar of jam. Taste is wonderfully sweet and smooth, superb feel too. Sweet, hibt of tartness. Juivy. Excellent.
3.9 Smelled like s good cough syrup and I mean that in a good way. Really fruity
4.5 A 1 pint 9 fl. oz. bottle with no bottled on or best before date (but I think 2017 designed labels). Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass. It was a cloudy deep purple red with a big two finger beige head that had decent retention while leaving some lacing. Aromas were tart, cherry, artificial candied cherry with hints of oak and almond. Tastes tart, lightly sweet, lightly sour, cherry, oak and almonds. Light bodied with low to moderate carbonation. Overall wonderful as the tart and sour balanced out the sweetness leaving behind cherry and almond fruity goodness.
4.1 Slightly hazy cherry with a white head. Aroma is sweet cherries, raspberries, barley and light funk. Taste is heavy sweet, medium sour and light bitter. Palate is medium body, oily with average carbonation.
4.0 12 oz bottle poured, with a huge thanks to Jackie for the share. What a treat! Of all the cherry beers I've had, this one is definitely a one of a kind. A darker copper red pour, a dense tan foam cap. Cherry pie, soft Belgian yeast impressions on the unique and pleasant aroma. Flavor is a balance of sour cherries, and sweet filling. Tasty beer here. Exceptionally unique. Awesome try.
5.0 This beer is rated, on a national list, the best beer brewed in Wisconsin. I like cherry beer. I like this beer. I think my favorite beer is Unibroue Quelque Chose, which is not being brewed. This beer may have taken the top spot.
4.0 Bottled. Pours clear cherry red color, off white head, persistent lacing. Aroma is cherry soda, cherry candy, thick sweet notes, light tart sweetness. Flavor is tart and sweet cherry, cherry candy. Quite sweet soda with a tartness to it. Good. 8/4/8/4/16.
4.3 Backlog. Clear, deep red with a brief white head. Cherry forward with loads of fruit, some almond, light tartness and a bit of marzipan. Huge flavours for the ABV. Elegant.
4.1 Bomber courtesy Drake. Many thanks!! Pours a deep pretty red with a small beige-pink head. Aroma is sweet cherry juice - not artificial, not candied, but real, deep, ripe cherries. Flavor is pure cherry... ripe, not overly sweet, yet not bitter. Very flavorful, very nice.
4.3 Mighty impressive domestic Belgian red fruit beer, been hoping to try this for a while, 12 oz bottle pours a ruby red brown color with 1 finger head, wowza the cherries pop on the nose, real good cherries, not the schwag, nose has some other traces of fruit like blackberries as well, mouthfeel is quite nice, I really don't care for fruit beers but this is like hi quality cherry juice, just the right amount of carbonation, a slight bit sweet, but I don't find it cloying at all, coats the palate with cherry skin n juice, really nice beer, glad I got this in 12 oz bottle, no need for larger bottle in my book, great American Belgian red style, very worthy of da hype and seeking out for sure
3.2 Bottle A: Dark red bordering on brown. Thin white head. Light lacing. M: Big cherry syrup soaked cherries. Some lemon rind and grapefruit rind. Touch of cough syrup. Lots and lots of sugars. Bit of sangria and fruit leather. Indian bark. T: So very very sweet. There are plenty of cherries throughout but they get stuck in the cloy. Bit of tartness. M: Light body, no alcohol, spritzy carbonation. O: I have fond memories of this one, but it's a heavy syrupy beer to me now. And there is a bit of Robutussin to boot.
4.0 Big bottle. Hazy red color with an off white head. Sweet strong cherry aroma. Strong cherry flavor. Nice flavor without the fake candy flavor with some beers. Medium with a cleaner finish than expected.
3.7 750 ml bottle. HHOKXXI. (Festival Foods) La Crosse, WI. Enjoyed on Nov 25 2017. Deep red color with a small pink head. Cherry, apple, fruits and sweetness in the aroma. Apple, cherry, strawberry and freshness in the flavor. Really well brewed fruit beer. Super balanced.
4.6 750 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly crystal clear ruby red/copper color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off light khaki with amazing retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of huge sweet/tart red/black cherries, berries, pear, apple, fruit jam/skin, cherry pits, almond, and brown sugar; with light notes of vanilla, oak, funk, and yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with amazing complexity and balance of cherries, fruity yeast, sweet malts, and light oak notes; with big strength. Taste of huge sweet/tart red/black cherries, berries, pear, apple, fruit jam/skin, cherry pits, almond, and brown sugar; with light notes of vanilla, oak, funk, and yeast earthiness. Light fruit tang/tartness and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of sweet/tart red/black cherries, berries, pear, apple, fruit jam/skin, cherry pits, almond, brown sugar, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, fruity yeast, sweet malts, and light oak flavors; with a nice malt/tartness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Mildly increasing dryness from fruit tang/tartness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety, and lightly slick/syrupy/acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4%. Overall this is an insane fruit beer! All around amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, fruity yeast, sweet malts, and light oak flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink, with the mellowly acidic/tangy/drying finish. The definition of cherry jam as a beer. You get some backing yeast complexity, but this is just all cherries with some sweet malt balance. I couldn't possibly taste any more ripe authentic cherry flavor, even if I bought them from the store. An absolutely mind blowing offering, and the best fruit beer I have ever had.
4.1 25.4floz (750ml) bottle, I don't recall a freshness date, bought late summer 2016 for around $11, poured into a straight sides glass where it appears a dark ruby red color with a pinkish head. This beer is basically what a cherry cider might be like, from aroma to taste. Sweet, yet not sickly sweet. I've enjoyed this beer sporadically over the years, and it pleases every time.
4.5 From Dec 2007 I got this bottle in a great trade with joe1510. Thanks a bunch, Joe!! This isn't my first sample of this brew. I bought a bottle of it and the Raspberry Tart years ago before I started reviewing and have had samples of both every time I've been to the GABF. Boy am I thrilled to have it again! Pours from capped and mimimally waxed 750ml bottle a cloudy red with a nice solid, be it small, head of foam with some good lacing. The smell is of cherrries, cherries, and...more cherries!~ A +lb of cherries in every bottle will do that for you. ;^) The taste...is of wonderful, semi sweet and sweet cherry. In the background, I can just get some wheat, more pronounced when I swish the beer in my mouth, and a slight woody flavour. Boy, is this a joy to sip on and yeah, it's very low in the abv department but when you get a brew of this caliber, sipping is the *only* way to go. The mouthfeel is almost chewy, nah, I'm going to say that it *is* chewy and the carbonation is very lively.. just the right level for me to make my drinking experience stellar. There's also a small hop presence there to add just a touch of bitterness; not too much, mind you, as the cherry flavour is what Belgian Red is all about. I just poured some more into my glass and I have a huge smile on my face. Wow. Is this ever a satisfying beer. Bottom line: This is a world class brew that hits my palate on all cylinders. Like I said before I got this in a trade and it certainly won't be the last time I trade for it. Thank again, Joe!!
5.0 A great example of a Flanders Red Ale in the U.S. Bravo New Glarus!
4.3 Pours a cloudy dark red or purple with a medium, fizzy beige head that quickly fades. The aroma is overwhelmingly cherry with some minor oak. Very appealing. The taste is just a touch sweet and is slightly tart. Some light floral elements and oak complement the extremely heavy cherry flavor. Hints of both spices and wheat are found as well. A sharp cherry aftertaste lingers with you for a moment. Light in body, and slick in texture that has just a bit of fizziness to it. Even though I wish that this one packed a little more of a punch, the fact remains that its absolutely delicious.
4.4 Pours a bright red with pink head. The aroma sweet cherry. The texture is creamy soft, with lively carbonation. Good sweet sour balance
3.9 750 ml bottle pours reddish with a off pink head. Aroma of cherries and oak. Taste is cherries, oak and some yeast.
5.0 Perfect combination of sweetness and tartness, major crowdpleaser. Mmmmmmmmmm
3.4 Bottle shared. Clear slighly amberish ruby red with a light beige head. Huge fruit notes, cherry, cherry syrup, cherry pits, tons of sugar and what seems like artificial sweetner. While the fruit character is very nicely present in the beer, overall it feels quite artificial because of the excessive sweetness. A bit like a cheap sweetened kriek.
4.2 Sweet and sour. Strong hit of cherries. A hint of bread. Murky orange brown with an off white head that leaves a little bit of lacing and a thin ring around the surface. Sweet but with a hint of sour and a lightly tart finish. Smooth like hard candy. Lots of cherry. A hint of earth and a hint of sweet citrus.
4.0 Pours a brown tinted ruby red with a small off white head and good lacing. Strong cherry licorice aroma and cherry skin. Taste has fresh bing cherry and some sweetness with a mild tartness. Some cherry skin. Flavor is big and tasty. Medium bodied with medium/high carbonation. Very good fresh cherry with more perceived sweetness than actual sweetness. The tartness helps to balance it nicely.
4.0 bomber pours bright red with pinkish head big cherry nose with a woody presence taste was very sweet carbonation was moderate
3.7 Bottle from Krista in Wisconsin. Talk Garnet reddish-brown with lasting ring and a little lace. Ripe cherry and Woody Aroma with hints of floral and caramel. Very sweet ripe cherry with some toasted caramel and brown sugar sweetness. Woody finished with a touch of tart dryness and lingering Sweet Cherry and brown sugar slightly sticky with fine internal carbonation. Very good but too sweet for my taste. Would probably go well with Rich chocolate cake.
4.5 Bottle; pours dark red with a reddish brown head; aroma of homemade cherry pie; taste is sweet and very much like cherry pie; finish is dry, with some lingering cherry; the cherry aroma and flavor is dominant but balanced and not overpowering or artificial; best fruit beer I have had to date
3.0 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer. Totalnie nie mój klimat. Słodki kompot wiśniowy, mdły i jednowymiarowy.
