2.9Nice black pour with a thin rocky light beige cap. The nose is murky and roasty with a slight soy sauce tone in it, along with some floral and earthy pine bitterness. Full flavor although too roasty bitter, with earthy pine notes and very little sweetness save for what comes from the black malt. Standard BIPA of the variety that makes me wary of BIPAs.
4.4Bomber bottle poured a clear deep brown hue w/ large frothy tan head and thick sticky lacing. Moderate aroma of dark breads and spicy hops. Initial flavor is light sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish of long duration. Tastes are piney hop, dark bread, and caramelized sugar. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel, and moderate carbonation.
3.3Bottle. Dark brown pour, creamy beige head. Nicely bitter and roasty, notes of chocolate and coffee, but a little light bodied.
3.1Bottle: Black with rich mahogany, translucent edges & a foamy, deep-khaki head that retains well on top. Aroma of heavy roast, pine needles, bitter orange peel, faint coffee bean, & some ashy char. Seems decisively more on the porter side of the line than an IPA. Taste follows the same ethos. Notes of char, roast, coffee bean, dry cocoa powder, & faint smoke are in the foreground, with complementing hints of wet pine, citrus peel, & bitter leaves. A little bland when compared to similar beers. This is closer to a hopped up porter than a "black IPA". But then again, isn’t that what a black IPA is? Sharp, almost astringent mouth feel. Decent beer, not great.
3.5Dark, slight red when held up to the light, some transparency, off white head, some lacing. Nice dry cocoa and hop aroma. Quite a nice smooth palate. Taste is not super bitter, but there’s a nice bitterness. Pretty typical black IPA I would say. Good beer.
3.7pours unclear dark brown, red tint, with a very nice light beige head, good retention and lacing. earthy and coffee notes delayed in a dry chocolate and lightly sweet nutty malt bill, gentle pine needles, resin and citrus, slightly ashy. moderately low carbonation, light body - oily yet quite assertive/bold yet balanced and never harsh bitter coffee-resinous-grassy-dusty-citrusy finish. nice use of malts/hops - not an explosive ipa but it is well crafted - more than your average black ipa. enjoyed!
3.7The aroma is caramel, coffee and a hint of citrus. Pours black with light brown mostly diminishing and excellent lacing. The taste is bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter. Overall pretty good, I’ve had it before and will again.
2.0smells like IPA but really light smell that is hard to catch...appearance is black, as expected...flavor is roasted coffee almost exclusively...finishes on the hops side. Nothing positive to say here
3.5Transfer from BA review 8-15-12 -
Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass
Appearance – Served a deep-deep brown nearly black color with a small tan head. The head faded relatively fast to leave a lighter level of lacing.
Smell – The aroma is a combination of hop and dark malt. The hop aromas are mainly of a citrus nature but are mixed with a nice presence of pine as well, with the malt aroma of brown bread and chocolate.
Taste – The taste begins with a roasted malt flavor of coffee, nut and chocolate mixed with a lighter caramel flavor. While initially the roasted flavors are the alone and heaviest in the taste (although not really “heavy”) they are soon greeted by a surge of some hop flavors. While citrus is the biggest, there are notes of a pine and earthy hop as well. The roasted malt and caramel body at the beginning support the bitter hop flavors rather well.. In the end a roasty and slightly hoppy flavor are left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the light to medium side with the carbonation level being slightly high. A little more body and a little less carbonation would have helped those roasted notes stand out more perhaps, but regardless the feel was not too bad.
Overall – A rather nice roasty and chocolaty flavor with some nice hoppy accents. While not the greatest black IPA it is rather tasty.
3.622oz bomber from Crossroads Spirits. Pours black with 2 fingers of frothy tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, roasted coffee, old grapefruit, and caramel. Taste of dark chocolate, black coffee, burnt sugar, and rotted grapefruit skins. Not bad for a $4.99 bomber.
3.82014 bomber. Thanks Shawn! Pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma is floral pine but with some toasty notes. Taste is fleeting hops at first, then hints of burnt toast and black coffee. Long bitter linger. Slight hop presence. Good beer!
2.4Pours nearly black with a off white head. Aroma is not hoppy and there are very little hops on the palate. I wanted to like this, but was disappointed. No hops taste in this black IPA.
4.4500mL bottle, foil wrap. Vintage 2013. Black pour, light tan foam. Herbal hop aroma, seductive resin nose. Nice roast, burnt character, chocolate, mixed berry esters, lingering pine. Finishes with plenty of hop oils. I think this is my favorite Hatter. (4111)
3.4Draft at HopCat GR - pours mostly black . Soft citrus aroma . Taste brings mild roast and a nice floral note . Good .
3.8The color is a clear ruby brown with a large light tan head with good retention, and the aroma blends roasted and dark malts with piney and floral hops. The taste is mildly bitter, slightly sour, a touch sweet, and a touch umami, and the palate fuses a medium-light body, slick and thin texture, bitter finish, and a soft carbonation.
4.1650 ml. 2013 vintage. Black with a thick spongy foam that slowly settles to a lasting eighth inch. Nose is dark toffee with notes of molasses, chocolate, resin, citrus, cherry and plum. Flavors of dark caramel, semi-sweet chocolate, resin, orange, and dark fruits. Light-medium body is watery with a light astringency from the evergreen in the finish. At first had too much fizz for me, but shows a nice balance and drinkability. With possibly up to a year in the bottle, the hops have certainly diminished a bit, but they’re still noticeable. At this age, it tastes like a "session" version of Bigfoot and there’s not a thing wrong with that.
3.5bottle - Pours near black with a one finger tan head. The aroma is mainly of resinous, piney hops. It tastes moderately bitter with soft carbonation and subdued roast malt. It’s medium to full bodied with pleasantly lingering bitterness.
3.022 oz bottle into a pint glass. The pour is a dark dark brown/light black with solid presences of garnet around the edges. There is a decent light khaki head that falls down to a film, leaving a lightly spotty lace. The aroma is lightly roasty with a nice light caramel body to it. On the back end there is a little more of a light hoppiness and citrus presence. It's surprisingly light and doesn't carry a dominating presence. The flavor is similar. There is a good roasty, hoppy character, but then it falls off in a hurry. The mouth feel is really thin. There is a light carbonation, followed up by a lightly bitter roasty aftertaste that also vanishes quickly. Not very impressed
2.8Not bad. I swear there is a slight taste of cola. Nose has pretty delicious, bready sniff. I’m not sure I’m a huge fan of black IPA.
3.3Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks troubles.Pours brown to black with a beige head, aroma of hops, marmalade, orange, chocolate and tangerine, flavor is bitter with grapefruit skin, pomelo, medium bodied, tasty
3.4Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks troubles. Black, opaque, with tan head. Coffee beans, roasted potatoes aroma, bitter, coke and roast taste, smooth, medium-bodied, carbonated, roasty finish.
3.1At a tasting, small creamy head, very dark brown almost black colour, aroma of bread and grain with soy, nuts and a touch of barnyard, strong roasted flavour with dark bread, burned sugar and a touch of citrus with a pleasant long lasting bitterness. Nice but nothing more.
3.2Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks troubles. Dark brown to black with a beige head. Aroma of piney hops, a bit stale, a bit of roastiness and chocolate notes. Flavor has light sweetness, mild roastiness, piney and resinous hops, slightly stale, and a finish with strong bitterness. Medium-bodied.
3.8I had this at Global Brew. Pours black with a tan head. Taste roasted malt, citrus, bitter. I thought this was good. I would drink this again.
3.5FROM NOTES: July 22, ’12
Poured from a 22 ounce bomber into a tulip glass.
A: Citrus and pine and some sweet and slightly roasty malt notes.
A: Pours a deep garnet with a thin cap of tan head, quickly receding to a thin film that lasts for the duration and leaves thick swaths of lacing in the glass.
T: Light roasted malts up front with faint whispers of chocolate to balance out the malt. Followed by floral hops that counter balance the malt flavor. Hints of bready malts toward the middle of the beer. Chocoalte malts come back with light roast notes toward the end. Piney hops give a nice crisp hop bite in this beer. Alcohol is light and clean tasting in the ending.
P: On the thinner side of medium with good carbonation.
O: As a fan of New Holland, I was totally pumped up to try this beer, maybe a little to pumped up. It wasn’t bad, by any means, but I felt un-impressed by the beer. I’ve heard that potential is wasted talent, and that seems a bit harsh, but this beer clearly has a lot more potential than it expresses.
3.5Black pour in tap at beer bistro. Fluffy white off white head. Cocoa and malts. Decent bipa
3.3Pour from a 22oz bomber. A truly black brew iwth small tan head. Aroma of burnt grains, some resin. Taste is sweet malts and burnt grain at the start, very much like a sweet stout, a little coffee and bitter, at the start. Stays steady with a modest bit of resinous bitter at then end. Very enjoyable, but rather mild for the genre.
3.5Black with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malt with mild pine hops. Flavor is bitter hops with a bitter roasted malt, almost like coffee grounds. Makes it a little overly bitter overall, but not unpleasant. Not bad, but it could be a little better balanced.
Wife: 3.8
3.3Poured from a cold bottle. Dark brown color, nice tan frothy head, nice lacing. Floral hops smell. Creamy hops taste, with a malt accent.
3.8This was sent to me by strykzone in a trade. Thanks Dave. Pourx a dark brown color with light tan head. Good lacing. Nose of roasted malts and citrus. Medium body. Smooth mouth feel. Flavor is light chocolate malts and some floral and citrus hops. Some bitterness in the floral hop finish. Very nice.
