New Holland Black Tulip Trippel Ale

New Holland Black Tulip Trippel Ale

Since the early 1600's, the Dutch have attempted to breed a pure black tulip. Many have tried and a few have come close...but none have succeeded. Call it the Holy Grail of the tulip world. In honor of this elusive flower we have brewed this special elixir. We have combined the finest Belgian malt, rare European hops, an authentic Belgian yeast and finally, the brew is dusted with tulip petals. The resulting blend is nothing less than magical.

3.2 Bottle. Pours a hazy copper color. Aroma and taste are sweet with belgium yeast and cloves.
3.2 12 oz single bottle from Molly’s Spirits. Clear golden appearance with a white head and a touch of lacing. Aroma of fruity esters, banana, clove, alcohol, caramel, toffee and yeast. Similar flavor, with a heavy cloying sweetness. Medium to fully body with a syrupy feel and a sweet finish. OK.
3.3 12 oz. bottle. Vintage 2015. 10.5% ABV per the label. Pours a thin, well retained off white head, over a slightly hazy dark gold (SRM 6) body.....nose is spice, including hints of ginger, ripe banana, herbal hops, cereal....taste is slightly sweet with banana, bits of bubblegum, multiple spices including cardamom, clove, ginger, light cereal malts, becoming lightly peppery, finishing with mild spice hop bitterness......mouth feel, light of medium body, sticky, alcohol warmth present, carbonation adds slight creaminess. The banana and attendant bubblegum notes in both aroma and flavor are a bit stronger than typical in this style. It does not approach Hefeweizen levels. The result is a beer a bit too sweet, not quite spice dominated enough, and muddled. Perhaps a change in yeast or yeasts and using less beet sugar would improve. This is a different recipe than the original as evidenced by the Vintage and the higher ABV. BJCP 7/3/13/4/6
3.6 I don’t see too many straight tripels from American breweries much any more so this was a welcome surprise. Rich and malty with lots of dark fruit, some candy sugar and molasses.
3.9 Well worth $9.99 a 4-pack. Some 4-packs have settled yeast/Michigan beet sugar and others do not. Turning horizontal bottle before opening lifts what’s settled off bottom dramatically improving body and flavor. It’s not the Chimay Belgian Ale I grew up on30+ years ago, but be sure to only purchase 4-packs with yeast on bottom. Apparently some batches or most recent batches have eliminated it’s introduction thus diminishing character in this brew.
4.0 Cloudy golden with a thin white foamy head. Earthy eatery Belgian nose with a bit of Belgian blonde malt. Big fluffy Belgian blonde malt with big yeasty tripel esters, banana, and a hint of booze and a bit of toast/biscuit. Really full and rich and complex. Nice and crisp but also estery and fruity and yeasty. Really keen.
3.8 Pours a peachy orange gold. Some soapy head. Aromas of sweet buttery caramel fruit bannanna and mixed fruit juicy, pepper, anise. marshmello spice. Same in taste, banana cream, bigger on peppery clovy(but not reall clovy) spice , some clove anise or licorice like, rich malt but smooth, buttery, a little more on the sweet side, 10.5% bottle by the way, not real boozy, orange, citrus, some grassiness and some dryness in finish. Pretty good. Pretty pleasant, not much to not like about this and Im not mostly real big on American Interpretation of Belgian style. I would say this is up there with some of the good authentic Belgian beer.
3.3 Aroma is mildly spicy/Belgian yeast and pale malts. The flavor is Belgian yeast, fruit, spices, vegetables and a mildly tart/sour/increasingly warming finish.
3.4 bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Hazy dark amber color, full ivory head cover, bands of lace. Aroma of malt, hops and bread. Taste is semi-sweet malt that shows alcohol and floral hops early before allowing the malt to reappear in a long finish that becomes warmer and warmer. Big, filling, strong.
4.0 Clear amber with a small head. Aroma is very champagne like. Medium in body with good carbonation. Flavor is very good with nice fruity overtones and a bit of alcohol, though not as much as the abv would predict. Very nice.
3.6 Slightly hazy gold pour with an amber core, a one finger, creamy, soapy bright white head. Aroma is big on berry, tree fruit and banana esters, some toast, cereal, fruity floral notes, a hint of pepper, a hint of clove and light candi sugar-like sweetness. Flavor is cereal, starchy grain, doughy bread, sweet apple, sweet apricot, hay, caramel, fruity floral notes, alcohol, over ripe banana and a hint of citrusy spice. Medium body, syrupy, but slightly chalky and slick entry, light, somewhat blanketing and fairly sharp carbonation and dry, slightly boozy and warm finish. Good stuff, very estery, without being a complete booze bomb, like many of the more flavorful Tripels (especially American) seem to be..
3.6 Bottle. Big fruity nose, estery, berries, spice, and alcohol fumes. Hazy dark straw color. Sugary fruit, more berries, the fruit floats around but doesn’t develop into much. Medium body. Full of fruit. Tasty. Nice approximation, but still not a black tulip.
3.4 Aroma of yeast, tart fruits, and some spice. Taste follows suit. Apple type flavors hit particularly in the finish. Decent tripel. Vintage 2014 has 10.5% ABV; extraordinarily well-hidden. I didn’t think this tasted "boozy" at all.
3.5 Bottle at Craig’s. Pours golden amber, nose is yeasty, caramel, taste is similar, light fruit, sweet.
3.5 The aroma evokes bread-like yeast. As I sip, I also taste caramel malt, and light hop note. Predominant tastes are sweet and sour. The aftertaste is of alcohol, but also smooth. Not too typical of a triple, but still pretty good.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a hazy dark copper color with a small head and some lacing. Aroma is floral, fruity, some spice and hint of booze. Taste of fruits, malt sweetness, banana and spice. Mild bitterness and the finish is a bit sticky. Moderate body, smooth with a bit of a boozy feel. Nice beer but it is a bit short of magical.
2.7 bottle to glass. Nose is full of candied apple and cardboard. Taste is perfume and then full of booze. Mostly sweet. I’m not a huge fan.
3.9 Julie thinks its okay a little hoppy for the triple I think it is respectable Julie wants taste of kiktA and one eye jak
3.5 But orange and hazy. Thin white head. Sweet candy nose. Smooth sweet bits of banana and honey. But boozy
3.2 I had this at Global Brew. Pours gold with a white head. Taste floral, Belgian yeast, sweet. I thought this was ok. I could drink this again.
2.9 pours a light golden amber with almost no head. no lacing. aroma is floral with banana and coriander. flavor is also slightly floral, coriander, sweet, banana, and bubblegum. light/medium body with a slightly creamy mouth feel. carbonation is very low. Belgium ales are my thing and this is a poor example. if the level of carbonation were higher it would be slightly better. Triples are usually effervescent. I don’t feel the floral part of the beer complimented the sweetness. I do know that rose is used in many sweet pastries but for me, here it doesn’t fit.
3.5 Pours a clear gold. Light, floral aromas. Belgian yeast, sweet malts, honey, straw, hint of citrus. Light carbonation, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Sweet, almost too sweet. Very good overall.
3.6 Transfer from BA review on 8-9-12 - Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance –Served a light golden color with a fine white head. The head faded fast to leave a light amount of lacing. Smell – The aroma of the beer was heaviest of Belgian yeast, banana, and notes of grass. Mixed with these smells were lighter aromas of a spicy and citrus aroma which overall created a pleasant smell. Taste – The taste began with a base of fruit and yeast While it is fruity it is not to sweet.. The fruit is largely banana and pear in nature. As the taste advances flavors of a floral nature mixed with some more bitter citrus come to the tongue. These in the end are met with some spice notes of coriander, clove, and pepper as well as a good dose of alcohol to leave a rather tingling bitter-sweet warming taste on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is rather creamy with the carbonation level being quite average. Overall – A moderatly tasty triple with good fruit flavors. One to try if the chance arises but not one to go out of the way.
5.0 Oh shut the front door! Truly one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in the past few months with beer.
3.3 Draft @ Bridge Tap House & Wine Bar, St Louis, MO. Pours a slightly hazy pale golden color with a small white head. Has a fruity malty spicy weak yeasty aroma. Fruity sweetish malty spicy yeasty flavor. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty bitter finish.
3.8 Draft sampler clear avg gold. Nose crystal malt, light bubble gum, Some ester. Tatse Belgian sugar up front, sweet malt similar to nose, light spice. Spicy finish.
3.5 lighter body sweet with fruity esthers and flowery aroma and taste. bit of malt and creamy feeling although light as mentioned. nice white head that lasts.
3.2 Sample at New Holland on 5/17/14. Clear gold in color with a thin white head. Aroma of sweet malt, banana, clove and spice. Sweet malt flavor with banana and clove before a peppery finish.
3.5 12oz bottle - pours a orangey gold . Fruity yeast aromas . Taste has a stringent yeast bite , some clove and spice . Not bad .
4.6 This is a very tasty Trippel. Nice and light with plenty of flavor. The subtle taste and aroma of the banana is delicious!
