New Holland Cellar Series Envious

New Holland Cellar Series Envious

Envious is a unique beer, a hybrid of many techniques. Its high-gravity malt-fermented base is blended with Michigan pear juice and chardonnay yeast for a second fermentation, before being aged with raspberries and oak. Unlike any style or beer before it, it must be tasted to be appreciated.

3.0 22 oz. bottle, 2012 vintage from Binny’s, Lincoln Park Location. Light pink/ lavender type color. Nose is simply raspberry, all I get from the aroma. Flavor is real simple. Raspberry puree, pear hints and light traces of wood. The flavor is ok. Body is really light with a bit of prickly carbonation. Its light a fruit spritzer.
3.2 Purple hues. Nose is fruity and acidic like peach skin. Fruity but the malt is rotten like old oak. It’s pretty drinkable best split 3.2/5
3.6 2011 vintage. Clear brown color. Average head and body. Less sour or oak flavored than I expected. Good, but no distinct profile.
3.3 Bottle: 2012 vintage Pours dark, cloudy, cola brown with a small tan head. Raspberry, fruit wine aroma..... Taste is as advertised....raspberry, pear, grape.... Subtle, well managed oak notes.... a nicely balanced fruit beer. Very good.
3.2 2012 Christmas tasting. Mahogany. Minimal head. Splashy sour oaky fruit nose. Red. Tart fruit; pear; dry oakiness.
4.1 2012 Vintage. Pours dark mahogany with a small beige ring. Smells strongly of pears and tart berries. Taste pear, mild tart berry, hints of oak. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and soft mouth-carbonation, New Holland Cellar Series Envious finishes with a mild tartness.
3.2 bought this thinking it was a sour, jokes on me. pours brown amber. nose of fruit juice, caramel. very fruity taste, pears, plums, berries, sugar, sweetness.
2.6 2011 bomber. Pours brownish-purple with a small foamy head that quickly fades to a ring. Fruity aroma of raspberries, plums, pears, and light chocolate. Tastes like fruit juice really with a slight oakiness. No tartness which is disappointing. Pears and raspberriers dominate the taste. Medicinal finish. Not my thing.
2.4 Tap: Deep brown, opaque with a thin, tan foam on top that settles quickly to a skin. Aroma has notes of light astringent cherry, very faint lemon & oak, & maybe some plum. Very faint. Taste is a mix of sweet cherry juice, lightly vinous grape, plum, & a touch of drying oak. Not tart or sour at all, just a sweet fruit beer. Very mild medicinal character, but not exceedingly off putting. Not really getting much pear... More of a cherry & plum juice mix. Very mild raspberry notes, I guess. An *okay* fruit beer at best, & definitely not worth the price tag.
3.1 An OK fruit beer. Thin on the palate, nice clean flavors. Not worth the price at all. Needs to be bigger and more complex to justify this price point.
3.0 2012 Vintage A: Dark Brown/Amber Hue, Passes Little Light, White Head Ring, Minimal Lacing S: Raisins, Raspberries, Mild Grainy T: Raisins, Mild Raspberries M: Average Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Mildly Sweet Overall, a really average fruity beer with minimal nose and taste.
3.0 Bottled sample from Happy Harrys. Hint of pears and chocolate. Went well with the cheesecake Yummy
3.0 A clash of flavors in my opinion. Definitely peary with just a hint of the oak. Not bad just different. Glad I bought the bottle on clearance.
3.1 Raspberry and chocolate. Interesting but not really enjoyable. Very sweet and fruity. Overpowers the malt. Not sure what to make of this.
3.6 Amber pour with a white head. Some berry fruits with some wine and tartness. Pretty weird, but tasty.
3.4 Much better than fresh. But still, not crazy about it. Clear reddish brown with very faint ring of clearish head. Sweet fruity grape coolaid nose. Concord grape juice with molasses. Not hot. Meh.
3.1 22 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy dark copper/amber color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma has notes of apple cider, raspberries, oak, red wine, caramel, with a mild tartness. The flavor is the same. I don’t get much pear at all. Lighter bodied and softer flavor than expected. Some flavors don’t work together.
2.8 Bottle at home. Pours clear dark brown with a small, fizzy off-white head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is raspberry, grapes, caramel and cookie malt with light toast notes. Flavor is toast, cookie, and caramel malt with raspberry notes, faint hops and bitterness and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.2 Vintage 2011. Appearance: The body is a deep brown with a thin tan head that quickly dissipates into a foamy ring and a thin coating. Aroma: The aroma is of pear, slightly tart raspberry, oak and cocoa, some booze is showing. I’m not sure if I enjoy it yet. Taste: The intro has some cocoa and roasted flavors, but they give to a slightly tart raspberry and a dry mid-taste of oak. The finish goes back to the roasted malts and cocoa flavors. Palate: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall: This is an interesting beer, I sort of enjoy it, but the dry mid-taste is the deal breaker for me. I wish the pear were more prominent also.
3.0 2011 Vintage. Dark brown, thin beige head. Smells like bourbon and cherry. Taste is bourbon, cherry, plus some apple or pear. The fruit flavors are nice, the bourbon is an unwelcome distraction. Seems heavier than 7.5%
3.1 Bottle with some coworkers. Pours a deep brown with some khaki head and lacing. Fruity nose with some malts. Aromas of Welch’s grape juice, chocolate covered raspberries and cherries, sweet malts. Really light body. Some faint tartness and a some delicate fruit flavors with sweet chocolate malt and brown sugars more prominent. Not bad.
2.7 On tap at the bocktown. Way too expepsive! Nice dark pour. but not black. Slight volatile aroma. Odd mild tart commencement. Seems a bit high on the alky. Ropey and leather. Some farmy in there too. Mild co2, very mild. Interesting wine soaked fruit in the background. Unique fer sure.
2.6 2011 Bottle. Dark brown pour, a little ring of carbonation and an aroma of sweet pears. Flavor leaves a little more to be desired, muddled malt mixed with old cheap pear cider. Perhaps it was better when it was fresh? Even on clearance for $6, it wasn’t worth it.
1.7 Bottle. Pours a somewhat hazy very dark amber with a small head. Nose is rather sweet with some darker fruit elements in there. Taste is also sweet and slightly sticky. Not a huge fan of this.
3.9 Cloudy, deep brown with light tan head. Aroma of dark fruits, sugar, fruit roll ups. Lots of fruity/sour/wine notes.
3.2 A dark red fruit beer with no head and low carbonation. Notes of raspberry, pear and soft chocolate malt. Low bitterness and moderate sweetness. Watery texture. The flavor starts mild, accumulates nicely, but doesn’t quite get there. Low tartness for the style.
3.9 Well, it's interesting. Very fruity. Overwhelming dry cherry and berry taste with oak notes, with no sweetness. The fruity flavor lingers. Can't discern any pear. Ruby red in color. Carbonated, with no head tho. Almost champagne-like in mouthfeel. An interesting experiment, and I salute the brewers for being adventurous, but overall not super successful. Can't say I've tasted anything like it before.
3.7 2011 Bottling. Pours a clear deep chestnut under a fleeting off-white head. Fresh berry aroma. The flavor is lightly sweet on the front with tart berries coming in at the back along with some alcohol.
2.8 9th June 2011 Clear deep red beer, short lived pale tan head. Palate is low carbonation and just slightly dry. Raspberry juice that is lightly rounded thanks to the barrelling. Semi dry finish. Disappointing! And where is the pear?
3.3 2012 vintage. It poured a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma was of raspberries, pears, oak and chocolate. The taste was of chocolate, raspberries and a touch of pear. Decent.
