3.5 Bottle Vintage 2011, this one 21P / 8.4%abv. Nose is smoked, beautiful (and very obviously) cherry wood with some kriek notes even in the main -- not sure if they’re from the wood itself or s.t. else. Alcohol fumes a bit raw out of the bottle. Pours a dusky dark reddish chestnut with a deeply tanned fizzy head. Smooth lagery body, light, smoke lingers long into the aftertaste, better than many whiskies and without the sting. Indeed, the alcohol is much more civilized than expected from the nose. Smoke has none of the meat associations of the style, rather uncommon grace. Subtle caramel and a touch of complementary apple with light rye ’spice’. Smooth and yummy, though I could see many become bored after a half-bomber.
4.0 Strykzone sent me this great beer. Pours an opaque red brown with a medium sized beige head. Light lacing. Nose is very smoky. Medium body with a Aroma is very smokey. Medium body with a smooth creamy mouthfeel. The flavor is dominated by the smokiness, but there is some ripe fruit and a molasses base of sweet caramel malts to hold its own. The smoke is more like bacon than anything. This is an outstanding smoke beer and can stand it own with the ones from Bamburg, Germany.
4.2 Pours dark brown with a hint of red. Strong nose of campfire. Palate is full, round and rich with flavors of smoke, leather, meat and campfire. I love this style and this one is very good.
3.2 Bottle. Mahogany with no head. Smoked fish, crystallized brown sugar, bit of bacon, molasses, roasted and smoked malt, hint of salt. Moderate carbonation and body, smoky and sweet, palate isn’t quite as nice as the aroma but its still interesting and worth trying.
3.3 Pour from a 22oz oz bomber. THick dark brew with small head. Aroma of sweet malt, smoke aqnd ethanol. Taste is smoke, nitrate, sweet malt, ethanol, sweet through the finish. A little sticky and sweet. Smoke flavor passes after the first few swallow and becomes much more restrained. Interesting but not something I’d go for on a regular basis.
3.6 (bottle). Keg_Juggler's pick of the week. Smokey aroma with malt. Deep brown complexion with dissipating tan head Flavors predominantly of smoke a complex malts. Alcohol well hidden.
3.9 Bomber poured into Chimay glass. Deep deep brown color with reddish tan head - great looking beer. Smoke and bacon up front. brandy cherry molasses and malt and rye attack follows. alcohol is well hidden and can sneak up you. A very good smoked Doppelbock indeed.
0.8 Right off the bat, I am not a big fan of smoked beers. That said, this is like a slim Jim wrapped in a band aid. I don’t count appearance in my overall score so this ranks at the bottom. Very few bombers don’t get finished at my house but this was one. Down the drain it goes.
3.5 Draft at Rustico. Poured a dark brown color with a medium sized medium-dark tan head. Aroma was mild smoked malt, dark roasted malts in there too, sweet woody character to it as well. Flavor had plenty of that cherry wood character, some mellow smoke notes, molasses. Pretty enjoyable.
3.7 On tap at barcade. This is an interesting beer--lots going on. Smoke is there but doesn't dominate. The rye rounds it out nicely. Liked this.
3.7 Tap @ the Fred. Dark brown color. Aroma of sweet smoke. Tastes of smoked malt. Sticky malt powder flavor, sweet cherry wood smoke, tangy molasses, loads of smoke. (3472)
3.5 Aroma is bready, raisins, booze. Appearance is dark brown, a beautiful doppelbock. Taste is...interesting. Strong booze, some dark fruit, mostly booze. The mouthfeel is thick. I don’t think I would try it again.
3.5 Poured from a 22ounce bottle. The smoke is strong but never out of balance. There are notes of chocolate, prune, raisin, a big malty beer.
3.4 8/11/12. GTMW. Deep amber pour with a small khaki head. Rich aroma of sweet fruits, caramel, molasses, and definitely smoke. Rich smokey flavor as well, a bit salty and porky, with plenty of caramel, molasses, and dark fruits. Not bad.
3.0 The molasses forward character of this and many doppelbocks has never been my thing, but the smokey, tobacco and earth aroma and flavor of this beer helps dampen the sweetness. Still, too much alcohol, too much brown sugar, and too little restraint.
3.3 Cloudy dark reddish brown, thin head. Aroma has some tart/sour oak dark carmel light mineral/ slight pipe tobacco some smoke notes it does have a tart cherry likeness(if thats from the cherrywood?) Light medium body, strong tart bittersweet carmel sourish oak bourbon.Seems more sour oak bourbon like than smoked.Prettty tart and lingering tart, it has a good amount of dryness also. This probably would go better with cheese or something other than by itself. Probably wont get it again,at least anytime soon.
3.9 Bomber. Poured amber brown with a medium-sized tan head. Quite the mix and match of elements: rye, doppelbock, and rauchbier. The smoke dominates the aroma and flavor, but not as much as some other rauchbiers. Typical aromas/flavors of smoked meat, bacon, etc. I always wonder if the meat is really there in the aroma or if it’s just the power of suggestion? The doppelbock comes through nicely. Some dark fruit, raisins, rather sweet. The rye might have added some spiciness; hard to say. Nice herbal hops element. Nice!
3.5 Darker brown pour, 1 finger of head. Smoke, toasted malt, Dark rye bread. Lighter Carbonation, smoke up front, toasted Rye bread, Raisin, tobacco, brown sugar, molasses. Heavier body, ighter carbonation. Went deadly with my BBQ tonight.
4.1 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 2010 vintage. Pours a clear and extremely dark reddish brown color with a small light tan head with ok retention that reduces to a a ring of lacing. Light spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, smoked meat, molasses, raisin, prune, toast, bread, oak, herbal, earth, chocolate, toffee, and rye. Very nice aromas with great balance and complexity. Taste of big caramel, toffee, raisin, prune, molasses, smoke, bread, oak, chocolate, toast, herbal, earth, rye, and light peppery spiciness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, caramel, molasses, smoke, toast, earth, and rye on the finish for a good bit. Great balance of all flavors; with a very nice amount of complexity. Smokiness is not overpowering and compliments the style nicely. Minimal cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy, slick, and slightly syrupy mouthfeel as expected for the style. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Definitely a sipper, but is still very smooth. Overall this is an excellent smoked doppelbock. Very nice flavor complexity and balance, and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering, well done.
3.8 10 ounce glass at the New Holland Brewery. A smoked rye doppelbock? You can’t pass up the opportunity to try this out. They met my expectations and it ended up being my favorite option of their entire menu. The smokiness and meat-tinted flavor really combines nicely with a slightly sweet bock flavor. Despite all those heavy flavors, it still pulls off a certain refreshing feel. I’d readily buy this in a bomber bottle if I saw it around here in Chicago.
2.2 Sample at the Central OH BA Tasting at From The Vine on 06/02/2012: This brew is a dark brown color with a medium light tan head that diminishes slowly. Partial rings of lacing. Campfire aroma with some malt. Medium body with flavors of smoky ham, charred ashy cinders and fried rubber. The finish is insanely smoky with a grainy aftertaste. Just too much.
4.2 (bottle - 22 oz - 2011 vintage) Copper pour with a thick and fluffy tan head. Big smoke and bacon aroma with some light caramel and malt notes. Flavor is a wonderful smoky beginning with some mild sweetness which is a bit odd at first, but the warmer it gets, the smoke really takes over. Big thumbs up.
3.8 Bottle. Apple, smoky ham, and rye malt aroma. Dark brown color with small head. Sweet apple, smoked ham, rye malt flavor with moderately bitter herbal hops finish. Nice body. On the sweet side but pretty good.
3.8 2011 vintage: Bomber. Pours a deep, rich brown with a huge dark tan head that does a tricky colour swap as it grows up. Scent is cherry wood, rye and toffee...bacon. Flavour islike a smoked maple syrup or molasses..started out a bit too sweet, but toned down after a bit. It has some good smokiness, but to me the sweetness detracts from it....I even think I’m getting some chocolate....very complex and good...
4.5 I’m not a big fan of Dopplebocks, but this funkyily awesome one from New Holland is something special. The smoke and rye malt pair well together and pull off a balance of smokey/sweet/malty/crisp to perfection.
3.7 Draft. Pours brown with a beige head. Smoked and rye malty aroma, with a light toffee sweetness. The flavor has smoked malts, toffee and maple sweetness, a hint of rye, and some light saltiness. Good stuff.
4.1 22oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a dark brown with a slight ruby hue. Almost no head. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, smoked cherry wood and some dark fruits. Taste is medium sweet. Lots of smoked cherry and caramel. A good bit of caramel then a huge finish of solid smoke. Medium bodied with a somewhat thin yet sticky texture. Lively carbonation and a very long smokey finish. Overall, very good. I would love to put this in my chili or marinade some chicken in it.
3.8 Dark pour, smokey aroma. Smells like wood and smoked meat. Some caramel and darker malts mixed in with a smoked ham, bacon, or rye. A nice smoked beer and definitely worth the try.
4.4 Heavy malts and smoke in aroma. The flavor is mildly sweet maltiness, campfire smoke, next to no bitterness and a hint of banana in the finish.
3.8 20 apr 2012, bottle. Ruby and clear. Huge smoke nose. Smoky sausage nose. Big at first but mellows out. More sausage than smoke. Med body and moderately fizzy. Sugary alcohol, smoky charred wood, breast malt. Wow. Surprisingly drinkable despite what are usually enormous flavors.
