New Holland Existential Hopwine

New Holland Existential Hopwine

Consider it an extremely hoppy barleywine, or a really big IPA. Either way, ten hop additions contribute to its lush and intriguing body. Aggressive dry-hopping brings a strong citrus character to the aroma. The flavor and smell of orange-blossoms pervade throughout the experience.

Ingredience:Water,Barley(200 pounds per barrel of American-grown malted barley),Hops(10 hop-strikes,totaling 17 ounces per barrel of American-grown hops) and yeast(it is what it is).

3.9 Tap at the Arena during Ann Arbor Brew Week Pub Crawl. Poured an orangish amber with an off-white head. Aroma was full of grainy notes with sweet and caramel notes present as well. Flavor was quite odd as it brings IIPA components to a barley wine. There were sweet malts as well as bitter hops with a bit of alcohol. A fun beer.
3.2 Pours cloudy orange with a short lived head. Hoppy aroma, resinous, piney. Flavor starts very sweet and fruity, peach notes, with a syrupy finish.
3.4 Bottled sample. Orange in colour with medium carbonation. Quite malt forward on the nose, with notes of creme caramel, hothouse flowers, booze, and a bit of citrus. The hops come through a bit more in the mouth with some herbal and orange notes mixing in with the strong malt profile. Faint oxidation notes, even though the bottle was less than a year old. Fairly heavy in the mouth, with a moderate amount of bitterness providing balance. A pretty standard barleywine, but not quite the hop bomb that was advertized.
3.7 22 oz bottle. Clear orange brown with a haze. Medium light with faint carb. Taste is caramel, melon, orange peel and candi with a grassy bite. Mostly sweet with just enough bitterness to balance. I don’t usually like hoppy barleywines but this worked well, if a bit simple.
3.3 Sampled draft on tap at the brewpub (Holland, MI). Pours a a nice bright amber, some more lighter gold notes, decent whitish head that laces well, coats the sides of the glass. Light haze. Aromas are light floral hop and mild seweetness. Initial throws a decent floral hop body with light malty swetness, some stronger booziness and good bitterness on the backend. For the style, this lacking, but as a beer it isn’t too bad overall. Finishes floral and earthy hop, light seeetness. The hops steal the show, but are by no means assertive.
3.3 Bottle. Poured a filtered orange color with a white head. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, fruit, citrus hops. Taste is malty sweet with some citrus hops. An interesting barleywine. Finish is bitter and sweet. Mouth is pretty carbonated. Overall, pretty decent barleywine.
3.2 Bottle from Whole Foods, Cleveland Heights. A strange IPA, commercial description more of barleywine. Bitter IPA mostly, highly carbonated, below average mouthfeel. Light orange colour. Drinkable, OK as an IPA. A bit of hop aroma.
3.4 on tap. pours a clear amber with an offwhite head. tastes like bazooka bubble gum with some booze.
3.3 Bottle most likely in trade from a forgotten source. Thanks! Pours orange and clear with a white head. Smell is malty, caramel and tast is caramel, a touch of booze and lightly aged hops. Drinkable, decent barley wine, but not too extraordinary.
3.4 I wasn’t sure what to expect with this, but being a major hophead I had to try it. Really nicely balanced, juicy citrus flavors from the hops, malt backbone supports it. Nice sharp bitter finish.
3.0 draft at buckeye- pretty disappointed with this one- just not much there- kind of just goes down- sweet and alcoholic- where are the hops- pretty muddled presentation.
3.8 Bottle at a Club-Tasting (Thx to You). Clear golden - white head. Nutty, berries, toasted, fruity, high hoppy, caramel, amber malts, grass, pine, peachy, light perfumed, spicy, citrus. Nice.
3.4 Flaske, drukket sammen med klubben. Uklar lys orange, næsten intet skum. Duft af parfume, karameller, nødder, peber. Smager let støvet, orange/grapefrugt, abrikos. Lidt tynd i mundfylden.
3.9 Bottle thx to me. Hazy and amber coloured with almost no head. Quite well balanced with notes of caramel, malt, spices, dried fruit and citrus hops.
3.2 Bottle. Pours a madium amber, very thin and wispy light tan head. Aroma is hops, malt, caramel, maybe some citrus. Flavor is classic barleywine, sweet malt, caramel and hop notes.
3.4 Bottle, pours a hazy orange amber. Aroma is sweet hoppy. Flavor is soapy malty with a punch of hops. End is bitter. Strong notes of alcohol. This is a good American Barley Wine, but there are better
3.6 A big beer, spicy, fruity with loads of power and body. The description of a hoppy barleywine is very accurate in that the sweetness and maltiness of a barleywine is well balanced with the spice, fruit and dry finish of its hop presence. This beer was delicious.
3.0 Pours a thick deep amber brown with a almost nonexistent medium beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, heavy caramel, floral, bread and light grapefruit. Flavor is bread, pine, grapefruit, some orange, light grape and more caramel. Sticky texture, full body. Alcohol somewhat apparent.
2.1 Draft at Nachbar. Um, no. I didn’t even finish the draft pour of this. A sickly sweet concoction with little to nothing else going on. Maybe the keg was old, but very little hop presence. The antithesis of balance. Too bad, as I love most New Holland brews.
3.4 Bottle pours clear amber color with off white head. Aroma is mainly hops with some caramel malts coming through as well. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is a lot of grassy hops and has some caramel and dark fruit sweetness in the back end. An interesting brew that’s for sure.
3.5 Bottle shared by Maniac. 10.5% ABV Caramel with spicy hop aroma. Hints of dark fruits. Slightly cloudy orange golden with little head. Lots of grassy hops up front, with caramel sweetness and some alcohol warming following.
3.5 On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 06/04/2009. Mostly clear copper amber body with a large frothy off-white head. Sweet malty and earthy hop aroma. Sweet caramel and earthy hop flavor. Medium full body with moderate carbonation. 7/3/8/3/15 - 3.6 Bottle thanks to butters from City Beverage on 03/24/2009. Somewhat hazy orange body with a medium creamy tan head. Sweet caramel, toasty maltiness and floral hop aroma. Earthy, bready, light caramel flavor with lots of floral hops which blend into a resiny/citrus hop flavor as it warms. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation. 7/3/7/3/14 - 3.4
3.3 Bottle thanks to mreusch. Pours a cloudy light brown with a small white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, raisin, alcohol and perhaps a touch of citrus. Flavor is mostly sweet caramel, with a touch of stale wheat malt, and a bitter finish. The alcohol slowly makes its presence as you continue to drink. I liked this at first, but it really wore on me. 6/4/7/3/13 (3.3/5)
3.8 Bottle. Aroma of tropical fruits, citrus oils, and sweet, almost rye-ish malt. Flavor very much in the rich caramel/toffee department. this really seems to be a malthead’s dream to me, with only a supporting role played by the citrus/tropical hops, though a supporting role that does add notable fruitiness to the malt. Finishes quite sweet, a touch wearing. Actually pretty tasty, but please don’t name barley wines hopwines, it’s just silly.
3.6 On tap at the New Holland brewpub. Golden amber with a slowly fading thin white head. Aroma of citrus, caramel and bready malts. Taste was hoppy, but not as hoppy as I would have liked for a beer qualified as being "Existential". Alcohol, sweet malt, citrus and some toffee join the moderate hop flavor. Some alcohol warming, but the 11.1 abv is hidden decently.
3.6 Draft – RFD. Orange, creamy off white head. Soft candy pine and citrus aromas ride swirls of honey raisin bread and caramel. Sweet malt flavors up front warm to a moderate citrusy-pine hop bitterness. A touch of dark fruit rounds this out well. Full bodied and slick, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Nice, but certainly not spectacular…
2.8 Draught, Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Light golden color. Thin ring of foam. Nose lacks a bit, seems dull & stale. Flavor is very sweet, fruity hoppy, muddled, cloying.
2.7 Crushed with Jakebra at BSAF. 10 hop additions my ass! We talking single hop cones here? Not much hops. Not much of anything. Drinkable and unremarkable.
4.0 22 oz Bottle. A cloudy amber color with a medium offwhite head that stuck around a while. Lots of lacing. Aroma of grapefruit , floral and citrus hops, caramel, underlying fruity notes, hint of bread like notes with some grain. Full bodied with an average carbonation and hint of alcoholic and dry texture. Moderated bitter flavor with light to moderate sweetness lots of piny and floral hops with a good malt base to balance things out.. Dry and bitter finish. Very nice Barley Wine.
3.3 Noted last May 2008, 22 oz bottle: Hazy orange amber w/ a short lived off white head. Piney, grapefrui, and pineapple hops up front and very pungent. Also a bit soapy. Caramel and toasted malts, and an odd papery aroma. Strange, because this was a pretty fresh bottle. Fruity aromas domanated by hops, and a woodsy type aroma. The flavor mimics the aroma with hops being strong and dominant. Slightly resiny and biting (bitter) with a decent toasty and caramel malt to help balance, but the malts fall short. Seems to start out slightly sweet, then finishes lightly bitter, then turns noticeably bitter in the aftertaste, which is all hops. Toasted malt comes in between the last sip and the next. Warming m/f, lightly hot if you will, medium full body, smooth texture, and a low CO2. Very hop dominant, and the malts keep the beer from being completely one dimension. Average IIPA in my mind.
