New Holland Golden Cap

New Holland Golden Cap

As the story goes, the charm of the Cap hails an otherwise mischievous band of winged-monkeys to carry out any three commands its owner wishes, such as carrying you from vast scarlet poppy fields to Emerald City, or even to the comfort of a country farmhouse.

Golden Cap Saison however, brings the comfort to you with its modern interpretation of a traditional farmhouse ale. A soft, pale beer, Golden Cap accentuates the flavors and aromas of summer fields. Brewed with an ancestor to wheat called spelt, and bottle-conditioned; it's straw-colored body accentuated with lively carbonation and unique fermentation profile evoke fresh cut hay and cracked peppercorns.

Ep-pe, pep-pe, kak-ke! Hil-lo, hol-lo, hel-lo! Ziz-zy, zuz-zy, zik!

3.4 12 oz. bottle. Sharp, citrus-y (lemon), salty aroma with a finish to the nose that charitably can be described as “vegetal” and less charitably can be described as having the qualities of compost. Wheat-esque smell, but there are differences from the aromas typical of actual wheat brews, presumably because the grain used is not wheat but spelt (by the way, the style arguably should be listed as “specialty grain” instead of “saison” due to the spelt). Interesting smell, certainly. Pours a mostly clear, effervescent, pale gold. There is a very slight haze with a small amount of suspended particulate. Large amount of appetizing, long-lasting, fluffy, thick, uneven, light cream-colored head. Produces good lacing. Dry, mineral-y, citrus-y, bitter, astringent taste. Much sharper taste than would be present in a wheat beer. Definitely falls into the dry variety of saisons, not the fruity/juicy variety. A touch of vomit in the aroma and flavor, unfortunately, but not enough fully to ruin the beer. Meaty taste with a pencil element (both wood chips and graphite). The flavor mellows upon multiple sips, bringing out an orange creamsicle quality. Strong, dry, bitter aftertaste. Light body. Smoothly watery in the palate. New Holland Golden Cap Saison Ale is a unique beer that I’m glad I got to try. It’s not a great beer, but it’s a good enough one that brings something different to the table, despite a couple of off-putting elements.
3.4 An okay saison. Nothing exceptional, and the lack of a substantive yeasty farmhouse kick is a bit of a disappointment. Tropical fruitiness, some mild hoppiness. Tried with Nick at the brewery in 2012.
3.4 Comes out of the tap a beautiful, slightly hazy golden - not much head, but that must be an artifact of the pour. Malty aroma has a strong yeasty overtone and a woody hint. Satisfying flavor is yeasty, malty and woody with a hint of - hmmmmmmm, cloves. Could that be a whisper of butterscotch? Anyhoo, a very tasty brew. Good texture has a fair amount of fizz, leaving a tingly, malty, slightly woody finish. This is definitely a sipping beer, for savoring while chilling on the porch - or watching a football game.
3.4 Spicy, medium bodied, pepper, refreshing. Interesting hops, slightly Piney and lemony.
3.8 growler. hazy gold with almost no head. sweet tropical aroma like sugary pineapple juice. flavor has notes of green banana and pineapple with maybe a twist of lightly tart lemon. refreshing saison, not too syrupy with a clean finish. solid.
3.1 Bottle. Pours hazy gold yellow color with a big foamy white head that settles to a foamy film. Aroma has sweet bread and yeast notes with lemon citrus as well. Taste lemon citrus yeast and bread with a decent hop bitterness. Palate is slick and chalky.
3.3 Pours a gold color with a strong white head and nice lacing. Aroma is spicy, slight malt undertones. Taste is typical saison that paired surprisingly well with the Chinese food served.
3.5 Tap at the Khyber Pass, Philly - 26/05/12. Slightly hazed golden pour with a medium white head. Earthy grassy nose with spice and a little citrus. Sweet yeast flavours, slightly sour fruit, spice. Medium body with a crisp dry finish.
3.0 Bottle. Pours a slightly murky pale yellow color with a fizzy white head. Lemon, grass and sour yeast aroma. Sourdough and lemon-pepper flavor with a musty finish. Well carbonated with a light to medium body. Not bad but probably not something I would have again.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a crisp, clear hay with a rather fluffy white head and lots of tingly carbonation. Nice spicy, slightly funky aroma immediately. Taste is crisp, spicy, and funky. Doesn’t really stick around much and definitely gets a little...not as good as it warms.
3.4 Bottle. Lake Erie. Clear golden color. Aroma of lemon, orange, spice, pepper. Medium light sweetness. Some citrus taste. Spicy slight pepper finish. High carbonation.
3.3 Draft at Blue Dust. Good summer brew. Pours cloudy, hazy golden color, aroma of citrus and wheat. Highly carbonated, hints of banana and pepper flavors, light bodied, slight bitter finish. Clean, crisp brew.
3.1 Pours a cloudy straw color with a thin white head. Spicy fruit, hay, pepper, and barnyard notes. Light bodied with medium carbonation. Finishes fairly dry.
3.5 I had this a few years back and it was phenolic and sticky. This year a friend recommended it and then gave me a couple bottles. The aroma is hay and citric with a touch of poopy diaper. Flavors include spice and a light non lingering sweetness. Mouthfeel is a bit slick like a trad farmhouse. Light acidity brings it all to life. Much, much better than I remember it.
3.3 Pours clear golden. Nice lingering head. Real nice looking. Aroma is lightly spiced and of corn. Light hop bite, spicy flavor as well. Finishes quick and clean. Hint of sour/Bret as well which is nice. Very light flavor that hides the 7% alc well. Nice work.
3.2 12 oz. bottle. Pours yellow golden with a medium sized white head. The aroma has pepper, yeast, some spices, light fruit and floral hops. The flavor is sweet, peppery, grassy, biscuits with some doughy yeast. Nothing overly special here.
3.0 Not much to report with this one; a fairly straightforward saison with no memorable characteristics. Not bad, but nothing special.
3.3 Pours hazy yellow gold with a thin white head. Smells floral and yeasty. Tastes blank on the front...but the back end reveals...hay? I dunno...this one is confusing. It is a fine brew, but as far as saisons go...this would be on the low end.
3.6 Poured from bottle. Aroma of malt , orange peel, clove and spice. This is the second saison I’ve tried with both radically different. Cloudy gold, white head. The orange / spice overtake the malt, giving this a nice bitter flavor. Dry refreshing feel - more carbonated than usual. A slight honey note as well. Well done.
1.4 Moderate aroma and active dirty yellow pour with a balanced taste and simple mouthfeel.
2.8 12 oz bottle at the globe. Pours a clear yellow body with a medium white head. Aroma of herbs, grass, pineapple, subtle barnyard, and citrus. Flavor of lemon, grass, pepper, and florals.
3.0 Bottle to a duvel tulip. Pours a mostly clear golden yellow with a 2 inch foamy white head and little lacing. Aroma is Belgian yeast, coriander, and banana. Taste is banana, yeast, apple, and some sweet white table wine. Thin mouthfeel with kind of high carbonation. Pretty good.
3.4 Your classic Belgian saison yeast with a dash of citrus. Crisp, solid flavors, lighter than Boulevard’s high alcohol saison. Nicely done.
3.7 Bottle at Binny’s promotional event. I hand it to New Holland for brewing a light and refreshing summer beer that has some kick, but is still gentle about it. It’s a very pale and bubbly yellow, which made me brace for blandness. Instead, this is a very smooth and slightly spiced farmhouse ale. It’s nothing extraordinary, but it’s very solid, enjoyable, flavorful as a farmhouse ale should be, and crisp - all good for hot summers. This is a great beer for a mid-range price.
3.0 Pours a fantastic golden color. Aroma is filled with lemon notes and other fruits. The taste has a ton of flavor and quite a bit of bitterness throughout. Finishes nice. A great beer for a hot summer day.
3.6 On tap at UJs. Pours straw yellow with thin white head. Floral, white grapes, hay, bubblegum. Moderately sweet with mild bitterness. Lively, thin body. Tastes a lot like a bubbly chardonnay.
3.3 Pours hazy straw. Notes of yeast and grass with a banana hint that gets bigger through the finish.
4.1 Yeasts, Cracked Peppers, Bubble Gum, Sweet Corn, and Malts. All of these flavors come together to make a nice crisp, refreshing and easy to drink Saison Ale. Surly CynicAle was my favorite Saison before reviewing this, but I think that just may change!
3.8 Originally reviewed: 6/10/10. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a hazy yellow/gold. A thin white head sits on top. Little retention. Scents of wet hay, grass, yeast, and wheat. The mouth is crisp with a moderate-to-high amount of carbonation. Decent for the style. Flavors of yeast, tart pineapple, apples, light grassy notes, and the finish is mild with a decent bready mouth. Not bad. Refreshing, really.
3.5 A very pleasant saison, although it was a bit too chilly for it when I had it. Still enjoyable.
