4.0 Bottled. Pours pitch black with off white small head. Aroma is slightly malty with chocolate and coffee with a hint of booze. Smooth mouthfeel with low carbonation. Really lovely stout.
3.5 BB backlog. Bottle, pours a deep dark brown, nearly black. Head is 2 finger and beige in color. Smell is roasted malt, coffee, toffee, and rich chocolate. Flavor is oak, cocoa, barley, and subtle grain. The booze was hidden well for 10.8 percent, tasted closer to 8
4.0 Bottle shared at a Yom Kippur tasting at Max’ place. 2016 bottle. Black with a tan head. Chocolate-covered cherry, sherry aroma. Bitter, ink, alcohol in the mouth. Full body, smooth and syrupy. 11.5%abv. but doesn’t feel like it at all. A little roasty and bitter finish. Good.
4.4 The aroma is sweet bread, a little licorice raisin. Pours black with an amber hue, no head (this bottle is probably 2007 or 2008) and no lacing to speak of. The taste is some sweet and some bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation average and the finish bitter. Tastes of chocolate, dates, very very good!
3.8 Bottle sample at a Yom Kippur eve tasting at Max’s place. Thanks kerenmk. 2016 bottle. Black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, chococlate, coffee, a bit of cherries and more fruits. Great sweet flavor, rich, with roast, chocolate, a bit of coffee, some dark fruits, light alcoholic note, and a bitterish note. Full-bodied, rounded. Really good.
3.4 I’m drinking the 2016 version, 11.5% ABV. I can smell the flaked barley, along with some dark fruit, coffee and cocoa. Not boozy or roasty at all. Flat black color with a light brown head. It looked watery pouring out; I have to dock it a point for that. The dark fruit makes an appearance in the taste as well, along with brown sugar and roasted malt. Not very complex, but not bad either. Strong and long lasting aftertaste. The palate really let me down. An Imperial Stout this big should not be this thin and watery. Overall, this was pretty good but I don’t know whether I would seek it out again. It was expensive, not really worth it.
4.1 Purchased at Siciliano's Market in Grand Rapids, MI; enjoyed at home after a long long run and lots of driving to the suburbs. Appearance is pitch black, moderate thickness. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, hazelnut, vanilla, smells nice. Taste is very good, light burn from ABV, strong chocolate notes, finishes dry, very good stuff.
3.9 Bottled 01/29/16. Pours black, small quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is super roasty, lots of chocolate, some coffee. Flavor is very roasted malt, chocolate, sweet chocolate notes, maybe some vanilla. Decently sweet. Nice full body, very good.
3.8 12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Another good one. Poured black with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, malts and booze. Taste has a lot of chocolate, brown sugar dark fruit and some coffee. Taste of chocolate, coffee and dark fruit. very good beer, quite enjoyable.
3.8 Bottle shared. Thanks Gregg! The nose has some light coconut and vanilla bt is basically Dr. Pepper all the way. Alcohol is well integrated and completely non-existent basically. Super smooth and dare I say quaffable. A fun beer.
3.9 Notes from summer. Pours black. Aroma and taste are dark chocolate, roasted malts, and coffee.
4.0 Dark brown color. Very smooth Dr Pepper with Cola and very dry nose with some wheat and cacao. The mouth is super smooth with the abv well hidden. Dry with lots of cracked wheat and dark chocolate, cacao. Intense cacao. So well balanced. Perfectly executed.for the abv it’s really amazing
4.1 Aroma of dark fruits, dark chocolate, vanilla and star anise. Taste is sweet dark fruit, chocolate, espresso, vanilla, and a touch of star anise in the end.
3.8 Really nice and even if palate and taste. Would never know the high ABV. Rich toasted and roasted malts. Bitter and sugars balance with blackness of depth of taste and it’s reflective of color too. Tap
3.7 Bottle. Pours a black opaque color with a tan head that fades to some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark fruit and bit of coffee. Taste of coffee, roasted malt, dark fruit and some chocolate. Solid bitterness that lingers into a dry finish. full body, thick and quite creamy, has a bit of a boozy feel, but still is an enjoyable beer.
3.9 Shared bottle. Pours black with a nice tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, and some vanilla. Very good.
4.3 "Got a good reason for taking the easy way out." Oh wait, that’s from Day Tripper by The Beatles. Ah well. Even though they’re divided by night and day, I still like the parallel. Underneath its clean-cut happy-go-lucky surface layer, Day Tripper was about sex and drugs. Night Tripper is like that. Its pitch black body is dangerously smooth and drinkable. The rich malts showcase chocolate, cream, roasted barley, and a hint of anise. At 10.8%, it’ll deviously trick you into thinking this is a much lighter beer than it is. Sometimes mischief is more fun when it’s hidden.
3.5 Bottle/Fest. A- Coffee, cocoa, roasty. A- Black color, black liquid, light brown head. T- Alcohol, roasty, cocoa. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, dry finish. O- Harsh but still good. Pretty traditional without much excitement.
4.0 Bottle to tulip. Jet black with an average beige head and nice lacing. Aroma is cocoa, dark roasted malts, and vanilla. Flavor is dark chocolate, creamy milk chocolate, vanilla, a little coffee, and hints of tobacco. Thick and creamy with a dry finish. Alcohol is invisible, there is no way that I would guess it is 11.5% Excellent beer.
3.9 pours black with a slooowwwly forming thick brown head. aroma of toasted malt and black coffee. thick creamy mouth feel. taste is rich dark malt, burnt toast, and black coffee. light bittersweet lingers after the finish. The alcohol is well muted. A solid Imperial Stout.
4.0 Draft. Coffee, chocolate malt and straw aroma. Black with small head. Sweet chocolate malt and moderately bitter herbal hay flavor. Nice balance and body. Very nice.
4.0 12 oz. bottle. Vintage 2016. 11.5% ABV per the label. Pours a thick, well retained beige head, with extensive lacing, over a clear, brownish black (SRM 35) body.......nose is heavy roasted malts, with chocolate, light coffee notes, heavy dried fruits with plum, fig, dried cherry notes, light herbal hops, balance to the malts......taste is moderately sweet with brown sugar, light molasses, toffee/caramel notes, dried fruits including plum, fig, cherry, later hints of umami, finishing almost dry with light herbal hop bitterness, balance to the malts......mouth feel, heavy, sticky body, alcohol warmth present, carbonation makes for creaminess. This is a tiny bit on the sweet side of the style, but is otherwise nicely complex in both aroma and flavor, and is easy drinking despite the overall richness. BJCP 9/3/16/4/8
3.9 Bottle with $8.99 price tag, I think approaching 2 years old aged at basement temperature. Black, somewhat syrupy pour; tan head. Nose shows chocolate, roast, raisin, and something a little astringent in there as it warmed (alcohol, I suppose, but sharper). Flavor sweet, caramel, chocolate, roast, alcohol. Medium-full body, too sticky for me to love. Too much alcohol character to be world-class, for sure. Decent though.
4.2 1pt 6fl oz bottle. Vintage year 2013. You have to love that first giant stout of the year when the weather is finally cold enough to want such a thing. In the cellar since September of 2013. Pours black out of the bottle with an audible "glug" and leaves a one finger beige head. On the nose, big raisin notes, molasses, butterscotch, dark chocolate, dark rum, and brandy. I guess what I’m trying to say is, it smells incredible. Full bodied with the sweetness you would expect from an imperial stout with again raisin up front, molasses, coffee, light earthiness, light caramel and espresso that leads into huge roasty malt notes, light ash, espresso with a very long finish that kind of diminishes into strong dark roast coffee notes. A repeat buy for sure.
3.5 This was a strong stout which didn’t have any overly dominant flavors. The alcohol was masked nearly completely. The flavor was roasted but not burnt. Darker fruit, chocolate mostly. Not too creamy.
3.7 Sample at Great Taste of the Midwest. Aroma is licorice, roasted malt. Appearance is dark brown, khaki head, smoke. Taste is balanced, lots of licorice, roasted malt, cocoa. Mouthfeel is boozy, too carbonated, but oily and thick. Overall, still the best New Holland beer I’ve had.
3.7 Bottle from Ray’s in Tosa. Black pour with a tan head. Nose has initially big raisin, with chocolate and caramel. Some molasses. Not bad in the blend. Taste is of sweet caramel, chocolate, rum raisin ... and alcohol. Later down in the glass it gets a burnt caramel alcoholly slant with marshmallow to it. Medium to full bodied. With alcohol. Finishes nicely bittersweet with an alcohol kicker. As ever with New Holland, pieces are there, but the overall fails. A bit more chocolate and a bit less alcohol, and this is quite good. 13.7
3.9 12 oz single bottle from Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits in Muscatine, poured into a snifter. Vigorous pour results in a black appearance with a small khaki head that lingers. Aroma of dark malts, molasses, dark chocolate, roast, light vanilla, light espresso, a touch of dark fruits and a slight hint of alcohol at times. Similar flavor, rich, dark and roasted with a moderately sweet, light bitter finish. Full body with a smooth, creamy feel and soft carbonation. Good stuff, better than their Dragon’s Milk IMO. Give Dr. John’s Gris-Gris album a spin while you sip on this one.
3.9 From bottle. Pours opaque black with a small tan head. Aroma and taste of roasted malts, licorice, and chocolate. Taste is sweet and rich. Full bodied. Nice.
4.9 I could drink this every day! Pours black with a tan head that clings to the glass. Use a snifter to fully appreciate the chocolatey aroma. Each sip fills your mouth with its thick, full bodied, nectar of Western Michigan. The finish lingers on, but
