3.9Poured from a 22oz bomber. No date on the bottle - but it is vintage 2014.
Aroma - Can definitely smell the oakiness. Dark fruits too.
Appearance - very clear golden color with lots of bubbles coming up. Smell 1/4 finger of head.
Taste - Very smooth tasty beer. Great bite at the end of my mouth.
Palate - Nice mouth feel.
Overall - Pretty pleased with this. I think if it were to age I wouldn’t like it as much.
4.2Clear brilliant deep copper under a thin foamy white head. Brilliant nose of citrusy hop depth, some floral hop resins, a touch of dry grassy hops and a brilliant fresh nose about it all, mixed with coconut and vanilla oak tannins with a little toffee sweetness underneath. The oak tannins themselves show through a little too sharply on the flavor, but its backed by piney floral hop resins and a residual grapefruity zesty twang. Deep and nuanced with complex hop notes that arent easy to pin down, with a clever oakiness featuring wood and coconut tones.
2.9Bottle: Vibrant, lighter amber with some bright orange around the edges, semi-clear & topped with a slightly chunky eggshell cap. Aroma is loaded with spicy oak, tannins, mild floral hints, botanical water, white pepper, & some mild ashy notes (not sure if they’re from the hops or the oak). Taste transcribes to a semi-abrasive heat on the palate; lots & lots of spicy oak, earthy & ashy hops, stinging floral notes, & tree bark with a mild bitterness. Hint of citrus peel, maybe? But the heaviest component in this beer is wood, in both aroma & flavor. Not bourbon. Not hops. Spicy oak. Not bad, mainly because I do enjoy the smell of fresh wood, but it’s a little over the top here.
3.8Pours slightly cloudy amber, small white head. Aroma is mildly oaky and malty, little hop note. This IPA has a good balanced taste. Recommended.
3.8On tap at Kalamazoo Beer Exchange. Pours a deep, clear, amber with a half finger, off white head that laces. Aroma has big notes of resin, pine, and some smooth barrel. Taste is bitter but a touch sweet. Pine, citrus, resin, grapefruit, and bourbon barrel at the end. Pretty tasty. Medium body and carbonation. A bit resiny in the mouth with a dry finish. Overall tasty. Lots of American IPA flavours paired with smooth barrel notes.
3.6Pours an amber-brown with a white head. Definitely some wood notes at the nose along with some citrus. Taste isn’t very bitter. Mouth feel is fairly wet with a dry finish. A little different for an IPA in terms of the woody vibe.
3.7I was a little dubious about oak aging an IPA but it worked. Didn’t take away from the bright hoppiness but added a smooth, rounded body, pairing well with a blue cheese burger with griilled portobello. I still think this approach could fail miserably but if the barrel isn’t too dominating it’s nice.
3.2Draft. Pours a dark amber. Aroma is oak and some fruit. Taste is overpowering oak. Not very balanced.
4.2Super pleased with this beer. It does have the IPA hops but the barrel aged makes it smooth with some yeast and biscuit flavor with caramel and alcohol. Lovely.
2.4Pours a light mahogany with an off white head. Bourbon on the nose. Taste is all bourbon and very little hops. Too much bourbon on the palate.
3.82014 bomber. Thanks Shawn! pours a deep clear copper with a medium to smallish, but persistent beige head. Aroma is floral hops. Hint of oak. Taste is hoppy and bitter, but the oak barrel aging mellows it a bit. Nice long pleasant bitter finish and linger. Great beer!
4.0Vintage 2013. 500ml bottle, foil wrapped. Light brown/copper color. Tan head. Aroma of wood, old oak, cooked sugars, toasted malts, & hops. Vanilla as it warms. Tastes is of bold sugary malts, bitter hops, harsh oak tannins. Lingering flavor of oak tannin bitterness lasts to the end of this beer. This beer tastes like what the liquid of a juiced piece of oak would-be. (4112)
3.9Aroma of citrus, some oak. Taste is citrus and medium oak, some light malt. Alcohol is noticeable and great! Really good beer.
3.7Firkin at Hop Cat. Soft pale blonde pour with one finger of white head. Floral aroma with some sweet citrus and sharp oak. Very floral sweet character in the flavor with the oak playing a nice supporting role. Medium light body witha soft carbonation.
3.8Draft at Hopcat GR - cask - pours a medium orange . Floral aroma with a faint oak note . Taste is a bit of woody vanilla mixed with some herbal hops . Probably my fav of the Hatter series .
3.522 oz bottle. The pour is a dark clear copper with a thick white head and some moderate clingy lacing. The aroma has a little bit of vanilla up front, and then quickly fades through a dark malt character. There is a light bitterness on the backend, but there is not much of a hop character at all. The flavor presents a little bit of a woody vanilla on the front end, and moves through a nice malt profile with just a touch of bitterness from an underperforming hop presence. The mouth feel is a little thin, but there is a nice carbonation, and the aftertaste is a little lingering and nicely bitter without a resounding hoppiness and resin
3.0Ten minutes after rating this beer I was reminded of the alpha king by FFF and decided to increase my ratin for taste and aroma
2013 vintage bomber into le Listermann shaker from Starkbier Fest - nose is pre brewed hops, heavy on the tart citrus. Sips adds slight bourbon and something that made say oh, in the same way one does when seeing an accident and it’s almost certain someone got hurt. Berry hoppy but not that bitter. I like the BA aspect but it doesn’t work with this beer. Little taste overall. Light to medium body. Never again.
3.822 ounce bottle, Giant Eagle Market District, Dublin, OH; $5.99. Lovely reddish-orange-golden color; ilghtly hazy; creamy one-finger head; medium lacing. Aroma floral and fruity, apple/pear, caramel, oak. Flavor is maybe just a touch overly sharply bitter but I could definitely get used to it; the fruity/floral thing is overshadowed by the hop bite, unfortunately; but the oak remains strong through the slightly dry finish. Heavy carbonation is halfway between coarse and silky; medium mouthfeel just the tiniest bit oily. Really nice beer and possibly underrated.
2.5Not what I thought I was getting, ipa isnt quite the right style, darker less hops and very smooth, something just doesnt click right with this beer
3.2Bottle. Pours orange amber with a small off-white head. Hoppy aroma of pine, caramel, citrus and oak. Flavor of toasted malts, caramel, wood/oak, vanilla, pine needles and had a crisp and oaky finish.
3.7Tasty and interesting beer. The hop profile is good, but the aging only imparts a more malt forward finish, like an English IPA. I can't pick up any noticeable flavor from the barrel.
3.6A little subdued for a barrel aged beer, but good flavors. Lots of caramel, sweet brown sugar, toast, citrus hops and oak. Hints of maple. Not as hoppy as I hoped, but refreshing and enjoyable.
4.2Pours a beautiful clear chestnut with a thick, fluffy, and rather persistent ivory head. Aroma is quite hoppy and fruity, as much apple and pear as citrus, sweeter than most IPAs I have sampled. Oak and bourbon hints come out in the hoppy, lively flavor, as well as a hint of caramel; fruit notes are not as prominent as in the aroma. Texture is smooth and creamy, yet fairly fizzy, leaving a nice hoppy and woody finish. Get your Hatter on!
3.6Draft, pours a good looking copper color. Taste of sweet malt, oak and light hops. Pretty drinkable.
3.3Pours an orangish brown with white head and lots of lacing. Aromas are all oak. Bourbon, vanilla, and oak. Flavors are boozy bourbon, sweet vanilla and oak. There is some nice hop bitterness at the end.. But this a bit too dominated by the bourbon.
3.6Pour from a 22oz bomber. Clear orange amber brew with dense tan head. Aroma of wood, bourbon, resin and citrus. Taste is mild malt at the start, moderate wood, vanilla, and a little char mid swallow. Pleasant resinous finish. Nice.
3.7Bomber. Pours an medium clear orange gold with off white head. Aroma is a woody vanilla malt citrus. Taste is more of the same, vanilla really coming thru with citrus highlights and slight smoke wood aftertaste, a nice IPA with a slight twist
3.9(bottle - 22 oz) Light ruby pour with a white head. Mild hops in the nose with a very apparent wood and vanilla hint from the barrel. Light citrus hops at the start of the flavor that melds into a semi-sweet oak flavor near the middle. The hops come back a little at the end but don’t overpower anything, and neither does the oaked characteristics.
3.8Subtle oak in the nose. Mild grassy hops. Pours a hazy amberish red. Taste is slightly bitter with a rounded mellow hop presence, not overly aggressive. Very tasty. A light alcohol warming in the finish.

4.0Poured golden brown with good sized white head. Aroma was floral, citrusey with oak/vanilla notes. Aroma was reminiscent of Dragon’s Milk, actually. Anyway, taste of oak with a certain dryness, with good malty backbone. Hop flavor was muted, and the bitterness was not strong. I enjoyed it, as I have with each of the Hatter series I have tried. This one’s strength, for me, was that they brought the oak, just as the label said. You can’t say that for every cocked up IPA varietal that has flooded the shelves recently.
