Newcastle Summer Ale

Newcastle Summer Ale

Keg & bottle. Mainly for export to USA. Available in the UK at Tesco Supermarkets in 2012.

"The Hoppings" - reputedly the largest traveling fair in Europe, takes place on Newcastle Town Moor every June. Several origins has been suggested for the name. It may derive from the word "Hoppen" an Old English word for dancing or funfair. It has even been suggested that people "hopped" about itching due to fleas caught from animals that travelled with the fair. However, we’d like to think it may relate to the quality hops used in the brewing of our famous beer. Enjoy Newcastle Summer Ale at the fair or wherever you are this summer.

2.9 This is a great summer Ale. Burgers, hotdogs, and a nice summer ale kicks ass. Good times
3.1 Aroma: floral and hops. Appearance: thin head, full amber/yellow color, little lacing. Taste: weaker than I was expecting, slight citrus? Palate: thin, short wet finish. Overall: it’s alright, worth trying but not something I will drink regularly.
3.4 Bottle. Unusual bitter taste with some citrus. Didn’t leave any lacing. Think I liked but its one of those beers that could go either way. Worth trying if nothing else is available.
2.8 355ml bottle: BBD 30 Apr 2013. Poured into a ’Back Forty Beer Co’ badged glass sleeve @ home on 13 Apr 2013. Light amber with an orange hint, on top a thin covering of off-white bubbles. Sadly the head soon did a runner. Toffee apple aroma, with added grain. Malty feel to the actual taste, but this a watery brew and it doesn’t carry the 4.4% ABV very well at all. Nicely carbonated but lacks depth of flavour and comes across as a weak, almost bland blend. To be fair it does have a crisp bitter bite towards the end, but overall I wasn’t really impressed.
2.5 355ml bottle picked up from a local store in central Liverpool, shared with Kjell. Fragile white head, spotty lacework, clear dark golden body. Moderate aroma of grain and cocoa. Pale malty taste with some impact of grainy chocolate. Dry ending. Soft in the mouth. Ok (relaxing at the hotel room after the hammers match at Anfield, 07.04.2013).
3.2 Potent grainy aroma, lots of similar biscuit notes in its taste. Copper golden in colour with a small head. Gritty texture.
2.0 330 ml bottle served cool, Golden, white head. I literally couldn’t detect any aroma, but i’ve given it 1 as the benefit of the doubt.Lagerish and dull, the kind of beer you’d only drink if there were nowt else. Not actively unpleasant, just dull, dull, dull.
2.8 Dec 2012 - Mild lager qualities, bit of aniseed. Inoffensive but a bit boring.
2.5 4.4% pale amber colour with a nice head, low in aroma, refreshing fruity taste.
2.3 Not sure what makes this a summer beer, but I had it in the fall - just trying to get the Untappd "summer badge"
2.0 Bottled 08/02/13. An amber coloured beer with a white head. Pasteurized beyond the end of its life. Dry and ashy in the mouth. Very grainy. Really not good and actually superfluous. Score 2.0 Subsequent rating scored 2.1 Score unaltered
3.8 Dobre i treściwe piwo z wielką pianą, która tworzy kręgi na szklanicy. Kolor jasno brązowo-złoty. Piwo na lato, nie jest słodkie lecz wytrawne w smaku, a także końcówka goryczkowa.
1.6 I know why I am drinking this summer ale in winter ... it cost just 50p from Home Bargains. That is probably all it’s worth to be honest. This is not offensive in any way, it’s just a little low on either flavour or character. Can’t describe it more than it’s both sweet and slightly bitter without much depth of taste at all.
1.4 Not entirely sure why I’m drinking a summer ale mid-winter...but anyways. Pour from a 12oz bottle, a dark orange/amber. Scent is a little lemony, reminds me of kitchen cleaner. Taste is malt and lemon, overall pretty thin and watery. The label says Hops and Glory, but this is neither hoppy nor glorious. Ugh.
1.8 the smell is a little skunky but I am drinking a Summer Ale in the winter! first thought that came to mind In taste is ash tray.... definitely not good... 1 of my worst beers yet, but might be because its old...
3.7 The yen an anny, but yeasty bottled and much much sweeter. dunna be takin the yen an anny from us!! This tastes of corn.
2.4 A mid amber coloured beer with a thick white head. A slightly sour note at the beginning of the aroma, then a light malt aroma comes through. Fizzy mouthfeel. The taste starts well with a tangy citrusy hop flavour, but this soon fades into a mildly bland, biscuity malt flavour which itself drifts off in the finish, leaving a tart, synthetic lemon juice type taste in the mouth.
3.0 355ml bottle from Tesco, Ayr - clear amber brown, creamy off-white head, aroma of grassy, resin, flavour is citrus and grassy, with a bitter citrus aftertaste and dry finish
2.1 Nothing special. The nose is grassy with notes of hay. Golden with a white cap. Balanced with a little towards the sweet side. Crisp and clean finish.
2.7 Bottle. Gold body; medium white head. Sulphur, English hops, spice, a hint of red fruit, black malt, aromatic, minerals, dialactyl, dirty, wet cloth. Bittersweet. Dry finish. Watery palate. Similar to Badger Golden Champion or Pedigree. Brewed by accountants. Like a crap microbrew, or a mass market cask ale.
2.6 Aroma: wet cloth, golden malts slight tart notes with gentle hop topping. 5- Look: clean gold look with medium plus white top. Some lace. 3+ Taste: medium bodied, fairly low caronation. Golden malts , does not feel too clean. Mild off wet cloth feel. Average at best.
2.3 12 oz bottle purchased as part of a mystery six pack from Andy’s in Rochester, Minnesota. The pour is a clear golden with a foamy two inch white head. The aroma is light grain, and some sweet floral. The taste is a weird herbal honey floral sweetness, slight dirty metallic malt, and a weird grassy dirtiness to finish. It tastes very "industrial". The palate is medium bodied, long lingering dirty finish. Not all that refreshing. Not my thing.
2.9 Bottle at home ... Golden amber ... small white head ... soft mellow toffee hop ... little grassy ... ligth fizz ... soft grassyness ... not laggery but hints of it... soft fruit...light lemon finish
2.0 355ml bottle from Tesco. Rather dull and cheap tasting. They have not used quality ingredients on this, and the brewing process has more do with with a chemical process designed with stability and cost in mind rather than character and flavour. A light, thin biscuit malt, and a smudge of hops. An overall stale flavour from the processing. Drinkable, but not attractive.
2.8 On tap in a shaker. Pours golden with an off-white head. Aroma of pale and light caramel malts plus some floral hops. Flavor the same. A light beer, but not too light. A decent beer for the style.
3.0 Bottle, from Tesco Scunthorpe. Gold, fluffy white head thinning to a white sheen of bubbles, moderate condition. Pleasantly hoppy nose with some earthiness, a hint of pepper spiciness and some citrus notes, quite full in the mouth with a solid chalky bitterness layered over citrus notes and a touch of sweet grain. Lingering peppery hop bitterness in the finish with some tangy citrus and a pronounced dry chalkiness.
3.2 Bottle (355ml from Tesco): Light and slightly grainy with some lighter earthy malts and a touch of sweetness. There is some bitter hops but these are light and quite earthy too plus some bread and butterscotch right at the end. Orange amber colour with a harsh looking, bubbly white head about a fingers width tall and settling to a thing, patchy lacing after a few moments. There is minimal lacing on the sides of the glass as well. Sweet malts and some grassy hops to begin along with some grain and a touch of caramel maybe. There is an overall earthy taste that is rounded off with some bitterness and butterscotch with hints of some fruit too. Light medium bodied with a grainy, slightly malty feel that is dry towards the end and has a medium to strong carbonation for the style with a sharp tang to it and a lingering bitter finish. A basic, bitter golden ale, a decent offering and one that I would have no problems drinking again but not one that is particularly worth going looking for, if it’s available give it a go otherwise drink what you find.
2.1 Dark blond colour. Aroma is a bit stale but also sharp. Flavour has dull maltiness, a strong metallic edge and a sharp lemony tang.
3.3 Eh I gotta say it was pretty bold to slap "Hops and Glory" on the label. I got pretty excited and then...pours a straw yellow into the glass with a small white head. Malts and some hops on the nose. A little bit of hop character on the palate but lacking the complexity of a well-hopped brew with the citrus and floral notes that I love so much. Certainly a pretty far ways off from earning the claim "Hops and Glory" just sayin. That being said, it’s not bad for what it is. It’s refreshing and decent...but far from exceptional.
2.4 clear gold under a small whispy white head. aroma is tart with white grapes. tart, grassy, bitter flavor with some white grape or green apple. acetaldehyde? faint hints of vanilla. palate is light with moderate carbonation
