Nils Oscar Barley Wine (-2010)

Nils Oscar Barley Wine (-2010)

Translation from website: "A beer with a strong, and obvious sweetness. Drink it now, or why not save it a couple of years? It will only improve with time."

This classic hearty ale started out a gold medal winner in the Swedish Homebrewing Championships in 1993, and went on to win gold in the World Beer Cup in 2000. A little something to see you through the longest darkest night.

3.7 Bottle 33 cl, vintage 2007, BBE 07/2014. Pours clear pale brown in color. Grains in aroma, some sweetish notes like cantaloupe as well. Taste is quite sweet with notes of dark sweet bread and pale syrup too. Nice, but a bit flat at this point. Sweet dark bread in aftertaste with just a bit of boozy notes being there. Actually I like the sweetish finish in this which affects the score in a positive way.
3.7 Pours reddish amber with no head Aromas of dark fruits, oak, butter Nice sweet fruity barley wine with low carbonation, medium bitterness
3.1 Bottle from Systembolaget (2007 version). Clear copper with a small fast dissolving white head. Sweet caramel aroma with dried figs, raisins, alcohol malt. Taste is sweet at the beginning but turns flat very quickly. Does not leave a memorable impression. I must admit that I-m a bit biased in my rating since I nowadays boycott att Nils Oscar products due to the INEXA-scandal. All beers from Nils-Oscar leaves a bitter aftertaste, but not in a good way...
3.6 Pours cloudy light brown with a small white head. Aroma is heavy grain - the malts predominate. Thick oily mouthfeel with syrupy malts from beginning to finish. Faint gritty bitterness at the end and a little alcohol. This one is a few years old and everything seems to have mellowed and blended. Nice.

Skall då få komplexa portvinstoner i doft. Detta exemplar är några månader gammalt.
3.6 33 cl bottle. Originally rated on 20100827. Pours amber color with a small head. Aroma of ripe fruits, caramel malts and alcohol. Flavor of ripe fruits, caramel, some toffee notes and yeast.
3.3 Aroma: The smell is quite boozy, glue/solutions with orange marmalade. Appearance: A clear orange copper toned beer, a small off-white head with good curtains. Taste: The taste is sherry, orange, alcohol, and a bitter rye feeling. Palate: Little carbonation, soft texture, a medium body, a slightly coarse dryness. Overall: A bit thin, the alcohol presence implies that some storing is needed. This was the early 2011 batch. Note: On-tap at De Klomp tasting. (Vintage 2010) Reviewed 2011-07-16.
3.9 33cl bottle. Pours a nice honey with a layer of thin lace which sticks around for a while. The nose is very malty with a slight alcohol note. The taste is similar but oranges are coming through with a burnt sugar finish. The palate is full bodied but elegant in the texture with a long finish that is actually fairly elegant given the style. Overall, lovely.
2.9 12oz bottle split with Brian. Murky orange-tan. Oxidized amber malt aroma. Sweet, not really benefitting from aging, assumably has lost some depth. Some honey tones, bad mead. A pinch lighter and smoother on the palate than i wouldve expected, but still not so enjoyable.
3.2 11.2 oz. bottle, pours a mostly clear copper / golden with a small off-white head. Aroma of apples, caramel, licorice and booze. Flavour of apple juice, caramel, and candied sugar. Not the most complex of barley wines, quite dominated by the apple juice characterizes. Thin body and quite sweet. Decent, but certainly not my type of barley wine.
3.3 Man I got the retired one? How old could it be? Booze-heavy sweet malt aroma. touch of cough syrup. Opaque orange color. Very rough bittersweet flavor. Extra thick and syrupy. A brutal beer made to make a strong impression. Just what I’d expect from the Swedes.
3.6 The beer pours an orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma has a ton of sugar and bready malt in it. The flavor is also very sweet. I get a lot of brown sugar and molasses, as well as some pine and grass from the hops. There is also a lot of caramel and biscuit malt in the flavor. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
4.0 Årgång 2007. Komplex smak och doft av trä, karamell, jämn i smaken, harmonisk och gott söt.
2.5 Deep brown colour with a light tan head. Sweet nose with hints of alcohol. Very sweet malty flavour with some fruity notes. A bit to much alcohol taste as well [Bottle from Systembolaget in Strömstad, Sweden]
3.4 Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s. Thanks Dagan. Pours honey color to bronze with a small head, aroma of honey, wax, marmalade, flavor is sweet, bready, caramel . some hops and some smoke, medium to full bodied, nice
3.6 Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s. Thanks Dagan. Vintage 2007 Clear to hazy golden colour, sweat, heavy pear/ unfiltered applejuice aroma and a sweet, rich, fruity flavour. Flat, heavy body.
3.7 Label clearly marked 2002. Orange amber colour with minimal head. Caramel and dried fruits, some citrus. Almost no carbonation and I cannot remember if it ever had it. Very sweet, balancing well with the alcohol.
2.6 Not sure of the vintage. No disearnable bottled date. Pours a flat maroon. Nose and taste are not as sweet as expected. There is a bit of oxidation but it blends nicely into the malty bready plum/grape sweetness. If this beer was carbonated & properly dated I probably would have liked it a whole lot more.
3.7 Nice amber/orange color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, & fruit; Flavor of sweet malt, spicy hops, dark fruit, raisons, citrus, and caramel; Smooth finish; Nicely balanced; Alcohol is well hidden; Overall, a little on the sweet side - but good.
3.6 14 mar 2012, bottle. light amber and murky, no bubbles. lots of sweet alcohol and sourish raisins. full body and virtually flat. seriously flat and sweet. syrupy and sugary with a faint bitterness at the end. i think i like a tad fizzier and more flavor but this is still nice.
2.9 Bottle thanks to mora2000. Orangish amber pour with very little head. Aromas of caramel malt, resin, and pine hops. Flavor is woody with tons of deep malt.
3.6 En nästan fem år gammal flaska från 2007 som faktiskt kändes lite platt. Annars de klassiska BW-smakerna av malten som torkad frukt, honung och toffee, men även enl iten syrlighet.
3.7 11.2oz bottle in a snifter. Pours copper with a lacy, light beige head. Aroma of caramel, bread, and nutty malts, some lightly citrus/floral hops, and hints of alcohol. The malts are strong in the flavor and finish, with enough hops to balance it. Could be hoppier and thicker though. A good barley wine.
3.4 Bottled 330ml. -from Biererei, Vienna. Vintage 2007. Murky honey golden coloured, small off-white head, sweet malty nose. Sweet sticky malty, overripe fruity and alcoholic with notes of wax in the finish. Very nice fruity aftertaste.
4.0 nose is alcohol, very sweet malt, red berries, sherry, rotten fruit galore, feel is watery, carb is mediumlow, taste is quite heavy alcohol, red apple, hazel, sweet malt, later weak hops,
3.5 Bottle bought @ Systembolaget and consumed on September 17. Pours amber brown with a small white head. Smell is caramel, persimmon, vanilla and some alcohol. Taste is sweet and malty. It’s dominated by a malty caramel taste, warm alcohol and brown sugar that gives way for a rather bitter hoppy aftertaste. There is also a very subtle smoked taste to it.
3.2 A good villain. Tastes slightly of stale beer, but finally a really good barley wine.
3.3 15/08 0.33 l bottle, vintage 2007, courtesy of ogivlado or Marko, thanks anyway to both for sharing! It poured hazy orange to brown body with small head. Sherry, licorice, sweet and slightly alcoholic aroma. Sharp fruity flavor, mostly sweet but there are also some acidic and bitter alcohol notes. Sticky. Sweetish finish with warming alcohol. Not bad, but quite simple and alcoholic, even 4 years after bottling.
