5.0 I like Wrecking ball b/c it is a stout but doesn't have an overwhelming coffee or chocolate flavor and it a little sweet. By far my favorite stout and lucky enough to find it at grocery stores!
3.7 Bottle. Pitch black with a quickly fading beige bubbly head. Aroma is of chocolate, dark fruits, treacle, caramel, nuts. Taste is of chocolate, caramel, biscuit, treacle, light bitterness. Syrupy oily mouthfeel, soft to medium carbonation.
4.1 Taster at No-Li Brewing in Spokane, WA Sight: black, dark brown if held against the light, small brown foam Smell: fragrant, aroma of toasted grains, nuts Taste: low bitterness, slightly sweet Feel: medium carbonation, long finish, long bitter after taste good depth very good beer repeat: yes look for: No"
3.8 Bomber, 2016 vintage, thanks Craig! Roasted malt aroma with notes of molasses, chocolate and some licorice. Pours inky black with a thin light brown head that has some retention and lacing. Starts with rich roasted malt flavors with light notes of chocolate as well as a full body and viscous mouthfeel. Finishes smooth and a bit dry with molasses and licorice flavors that linger on the palate with some roasted malt. Nice imperial stout.
3.3 Bottle shared by a friend. Pours darkest brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of malt, molasses, raisin, chocolate and roast. Malt and chocolate flavor with some roastiness before a dark fruit finish.
3.5 Pitch black pour. Creamy, tan head that receeds into a bubbley collar. Aroma is fruity, green olives, chocolate and vanilla. Slick texture. Full bodied. There is a sweetness to it. Finish is long and bitter. Bready. Decent beer.
3.4 Bottle. Opaque Black in colour. Very Malty; roasty/burnt malts, lots of liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee, caramel/toffee. Fruity; hints of dark fruits. Slightly spicy. Hoppy; earthy hops. Sweet roast malty liquorice and chocolate throughout. Dry roast finish. Much too much liquorice. Unusual but interesting. Decent enough. (2015-04-12)
3.7 22oz pour at home Decent stout - but nothing overwhelming. Not tasting the 100 IBU’s
3.5 Bottle - Dark roast and chocolate. Deep jet brown with a light brown head. Dark roast, Chcolate, some minty hops and a very long roasty dark Chcolate finish. Not bad, but nothing particularly special.
3.8 Bottle, what Brian thinks to be a 2014 bottle, shared 10/15/16. Dark mahogany with deep violet tints and a good clarity. Tan head atop is medium-sized and shows moderately strong retention. Deep, dark, vinous notes emerge slowly. Strong baker’s chocolate, prunes, plums, currants and a hint of charred grain. Very dark fruit-heavy Impy, which is fine with me. Alcohol is controlled in the nose and it seems to be very obviously well-attenuated. Almost salty, though it’s not smokey, with black licorice, light vanilla and more dark fruits peppering the finish. Long, drawn out dark fruits lend a bitter character to the beer, as low but fairly engaging carbonation and a silky-to-oily texture concentrate the rich acidity and dark chocolate notes. Some light caramel sweetness helps balance, but this thing is very vinous and dry. You don’t taste the alcohol but it’s there, as this thing defintiely creeps up on you. Pepper, currants, char and bitter, dark chocolate linger on the long finish. This is some serious stuff. Very nice sipper.
3.8 Dark black, no head, red edges. Sweet aroma with fudge. Flavor, high bitterness, pine-oil, juicy fruit, fudge, espresso. finish is like cake batter. Very sweet.
3.7 22 oz bottle thanks to Willrunforbeer. Guessing this is a 2014 vintage with no bottle date coding. Sat in Brian seller at least a year and a half. Pitch black color, lasting off white head. Aroma is lots of raisin, dates, sugarcoated plums. Very weak roast. Flavor is dark for a dominant, again raisins and date heavy with a bitter chocolate finish. ABV is pretty hidden, body is a little thin. But pretty good.
3.6 22oz bottle from trade. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is dark chocolate, dark fruit, a touch of roast. Flavor is a bit drier than I expected, with same dark chocolate, dark fruit, coffee roast. Finish is overextracted coffee bitterness.
4.1 Bottle. Jet black color, thick beige head with good retention and solid lacing. Nice aroma of dark chocolate and espresso. Taste is rich coffee and cocoa, subtle licorice, plums, dates. Very tasty.
3.7 650ml bottle from Total Wine in Jensen Beach, shared by bananabi11. Very dark brown pour with a tan head leaving little lacing. Aroma has caramel and chocolate with light roast. Taste adds molasses into the roasty, cocoa, caramel and chocolate, but this never gets sweet. Solid and tasty. 13.8
3.7 Bottle from World Beer Market (Sake no Taniguchi). Good raosty nose, with chocolate, and light lactose notes. Near pitch black, with slightly translucent edges and tan lace. Medium-deep roast flavor, some charred wood, dark fruit, good chocolate, licorice, and alcohol. Medium-heavy body. Body is a bit light for the style. Very tasty.
3.6 Draught at DevilCraft. Pretty good surprise, rich syrupy dark chocolate with lingering spicy notes, booze is definitely there too, almost feels barrel-aged. Good stuff.
3.6 Cloudy black with lace. Nose of chocolate, caramel, lightly spicy yeast, cookies / brownies. Light but smooth, great chocolate flavors with a bitter finish.
3.5 Dark brown color. Light brown head. Coffee roasted malts and dark chocolate in the nose. Medium body, a bit more carbonated than I would have preferred. Medium body with some dark fruit but overall just kinda ok.
3.4 I liked what one reviewer said: like a Black IPA with more hops. I’ll add quite a bit more creamyness w a nice oatey mouthfeel. Cocoa charcoal, great drinkability, but def earns its 9.5%
3.8 A good balance of malt and bittersweet chocolate, leaning on the earlier. A little ageing did not hurt. Very good drinkability and meal accompaniment.
3.7 Poured from a bottle. Rich dark color, very little lacing. Unusual almost skunky aroma, but strong coffee taste.
3.5 Aroma of coffee and malt, pours a dark brown color with a tan well laced head. Taste of coffee and a smoked malt, oily medium body with a bitter malt finish.
3.3 Poured from a bomber on 11.24.15. A: Dark chocolate, fudge, citrusy hops, and cocoa. A: 3 finger off-white head with an easy pour. The head stays at 1 finger. Opaque black body. T: Citrusy hops, cocoa, and fudge dominate. Roasty malt is subtle. P: Smooth with lots of lingering resin. O: This is a big, hoppy CDA. The bottle must be freshy fresh because the hops are super strong.
3.0 Black pour. Big tan head. Plenty of lacing. Big chocolate and a weird rice crispy aroma. Rice crispies up front with a heavy molasses character.
3.4 dark red brown some tan head. Aroma grassy grapefruit on nose chocolate char. Slight carb Tastes chocolate some fusel alcohol charcoal, grassy. clean drinking like a Black IPA with more chocolate malt.
3.8 Black colour, beige head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts. Flavour of bitter chocolate, ash, sweet notes. Malty finish, bitter chocolate, coffee, lingering sweet. (From 35.5cL bottle @ After GBBF tasting, chriso’s place, London ’14. Thanks for sharing, rb crew!)
4.4 Bottle from Chevy Chase Supermarket. Dark black body with slightest tan head. Nose is molasses, sweet, licorice. Taste is also malts, molasses, licorice, barley and caramel. Nice balance Really good stuff.
3.7 Jet black with a thin tan head and moderate lace. Aromas of roasted coffee, baking chocolate and dark fruits. Bittersweet chocolate and coffee flavors up front accompanied by roasted malt and milk sugars. Full body, minimal carbonation, creamy, almost chewy mouthfeel and a slight bitterness in the finish. Claims 100 IBUs, but I don’t see it.
4.0 [7095-20150304] Tap. Sweet date fruit and chocolate malt aroma. Black brown body with a long-lasting creamy mocha head and some lacing. Sweet chocolatey fruit and roasted malt grain flavour. Full body. Good. (8/4/8/4/16) 4.0+ (@ Paradiso Pizza Dupont Circle, Washington, DC)
