Nøgne Ø # 1001

Nøgne Ø # 1001

We are celebrating our 1000th batch with these two beers. They are quite similar, though the colour differs. They are both brewed with spices, inspired by 1001 night.

3.7 Pours black with light beige head. Aroma is roasted, spicy and dark chocolate. Flavour is roasted, medium bitter and light to medium sweet.
3.9 250 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ De Hopduvel. Brew on 19.07.2013. Pours black, mocha head vanishes almost instantly. Nose is umami, soy sauce, thick oily lightly roasted malts but umami dominates with spices, cinnamon, light ginger & lavender,…. Spices are way less extreme than with the 1000. Taste is faint charcoal, umami, soy sauce malts, liquorish, spices are once again way lighter than with the 1000, still very heavy for the style, ginger, cinnamon, light bitter herbs, vanilla, kitchen, spices, liquorish, anise, cheap coffee, light herbal roast,… Oily & umami body. On RB the 1001 has a better score than the 1000 but I don’t really agree with this. 1000 the spices totally dominated the base beer but it was odd & interesting. Here the spices are way more in the back, base beer is more overt but a touch dull & too umami, it is still weird but the mix almost leaves it a bit in the middle, stuck between solid normality & weirdness. Fun given the still heavy spices, I do like it but I did prefer the 1000.
4.0 Aroma is licorice, molasses, smoky and roasty malts, caramel, espresso, coffee and vanilla beans. Taste is an almost chewy mouthfeel with rich sweetness, liquor burn and some rye. Appearance is black with a thin beige head that retains fairly poorly.
4.2 How: Bottle Appearance: black color, tan head Aroma: vanilla, chocolate, coffee, spice, Palate: full body, low carbonation
3.6 A bottle at home. Almost black beer with a beige head. Malty, spicy, licorice and cocoa aroma. Chocolate, vanilla, rosemary and spicy flavour.
3.9 Bottle from Systembolaget. Similar spicy smell as the #1000. Dark sweet and malty taste. The spicy aroma is there just as with the #1000 but this one is better balanced, the sweet malty aroma manages to balance the spices.
3.6 Bottle from Trevor, thanks. Chocolate dominant aroma. Black with a bit of head. Looks rich, above average mouthfeel. More of a sipper, and interesting.Spruce?
3.6 Deep brown to black color, tiny beige head. Sweet fruity nose, ginger, cloves, licorice, roasted malt. Sweet fruity and spicy taste, chocolate, licorice, hint of espresso. Medium to full body, soft to flat carbonation, oily texture.
4.0 Bottle shared with Hallinghansen....It pours black with a small tan head.... Roasted, dark chocolate, caramel, smokey and hoppy....
4.0 Bottle. Pours jet black with a medium beige head. The aroma is roasted and spicy with chocolate notes. Flavor is spices and sweet roasted malt. Cinnamon and licorice. Light ash.
3.7 Bottle - Cinnamon, ginger, chili and dark chocolate. Jet brown with a beige head. Chocolate, cinnamon and spice. Although not something I would want often, on a cold night it hits the spot. Rich and warm.
3.5 Bottle. Pours black, with a small creamy mocha head. Aroma is dark roasted malts, sweet herbs and spices with aniseed and camphor, earthy yeast with ripe fruits and wood, as well as cocoa and leather. Creamy body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is burned malts with spicy chocolate, camphor, aniseed and kandi, as well as wood, leather and coffee. Fruity tobacco finish.
4.0 Bottle: Thanks Tony_Gorilla: Served in a Chouffe glass: Smaller sized brown head. Black beer. Aromas of bay leaf, roast, hint of chocolate, hint of spices, some mocha, some soy and a sprinkle of caramel. Flavours of chocolate, some spices like on the 1000 version but more in the background, some roast, some malts roast, caramel, some sweets and some bitters. Nice. Aftertaste is a mix of chocolate, a bunch of spices, roast and some coffee with a malty edge. Low carbo, silky mouthfeel, fuller bodied and a creamy silky texture. This one is best of the two! Quite nice actually and the spices add something in this beer! Smooth! Well done.
3.8 250ml bottle at home. Pours oily black with wispy tan head. Wood, coffee nose. Sweet malt treacle flavour with chocolate, vanilla, wood, cinnamon and coffee. Pretty much no carbonation. Full body with a bitter chocolate finish. More an imperial stout than the spiced vegetable for me.
3.6 Bottle, 10,01%. Almost black with small brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, spices and liqurice. Flavour is rosted malr´ts, chocolate, coffee, spices, lliquorice, medium sweet, spices, caramel and medium bitter.
3.9 2nd bottle of the Nogne limited release. Appears to be a very similar beer to the 1000, nly this tme brewed with darker malt. Aroma has roasty, chocolate malt, barnyard aromas, clove, cinnamon and lime. Balances well, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium body, creamy, oily feel, soft carbonation.
3.3 Bottle courtesy of rlgk. Pours blackish dark brown with a small dark mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is malty, herbal and spicy with roasted malts, rosemary, sage, onion rings, thyme, burnt wood, hay and black pepper corns. Taste is slightly sweet, bitter, malty, herbal and spicy with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, rosemary, hay, moist soil, sage, thyme, hay and hints of lemon zest. Mouthfeel is slightly round, roasted and spicy astringent and medium bodied. finish is bitter, malty, herbal and spicy with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, rosemary, moist soil and hay. Decent…
3.6 Bottle from a trade with Cunningham. Dark almost black beer with a nice beige head. Malty chocolate aroma, spicy, cocoa, licorice, clove, rosemary, vanilla, ginger notes. Roasted chocolate aroma, floral, clove, rosemary, cocoa, fruity notes, warming alcohol, some licorice and caramel. Well hidden alcohol, some floral notes.
3.4 250mL bottle, pours jet black with a small tan head. Nose brings out lots of roasted malt, followed by a touch of anise, mild spices, and earthiness. Flavour is rich and robust, like a big impie stout, with lots of roasted malts, followed by a touch of licorice and other spices. Earthy, thick mouthfeel. Basically a spices impie stout. Very nice stuff.
3.8 Bottle at barely legal tasting room . Pours black . Small white head . Smell is roasted malts . Coffee and oats . Taste is bitter , roasted malts , oats , very different than the 1000 . Some spices but tge malts overrule a lot .
3.5 Flaska från SB. Mörkbrun, i princip inget skum. Liknande doft som 1000. Kryddig, bäriga enbär, rostad malt, alkoholvärme, ingefära, kråkbär, tobak, lakrits, svarta vingummin, lätt lite torvig beska. Funkar något bättre än 1001 men fortfarande mer roligt experiment än riktigt bra. Fin söt, kryddig eftersmak.
3.1 Kom i eske med to flasker, et mørkt og et med lysere farge. Begge med et sterkt krydret preg. Det mørke hadde et sterkt preg av alkohol og ikke så harmonisk som det lyse.
3.7 25 cl bottle @ home. Pours clear dark brown color with a small light beige head. Aroma is quite malty, roasted, caramel and chocolate. Flavour is very sweet and a long lasting bitterness with some alcohol notes. Medium body, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.6 Dark cola brown with a limited cap. Herby spice, chi, nutmeg, black cherry, aroma is so dam interesting with ever sniff you get something new. Taste is the same but with a cold coffee base. Cherry, earth, ash, the entire spice cupboard. So much going but I don’t have that much to say. Good brew!!!
3.6 0.25l bottle from vinmonopolet. Dark brown colour, with thin beige head. Aromas of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, caramel and some spices, but not as spicy as the #1000. Very full bodied and oily mouthful, with flavours of roasted malt, coffee, nutmeg, licorice and dried dark fruits. No alcohol sting and lingering finish.
3.8 Bottle from a Malmo Systembolaget. Poured a deep mahogany with a thin whispy light tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, liqourice, light floral. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a smooth mineral, earthy, chewy malt palate. Full bodied with soft carbonation. A lot better than the #1000.
3.6 25cl bottle courtesy of and shared with JMGreenUK. Thin tan head. Clear black pour. A bit of chocolate in the aftertaste. Much nicer than the batch 1000
3.3 Bottle shared thanks to Jmgreenuk. Pours near black with a small beige head. Aroma is heavy floral, pot pouri like the 1000, also with the urinal cakes. Flavour is over moderate sweet and moderate bitter. In the palate it changes, with roast, overripe dark fruits and chocolate along side the floral character. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.
4.0 Rating number 1001 (of course). It pours a black body with a small, tan, short-lived head that laces the glass well. Strong, malty and sweet aroma with roasted notes of chocolate, coffee and dark caramel. In addition there are the same distinct spicy notes as in the #1000, with nutmeg and clove as the most dominant. Strong flavours of the same delicious malty/spicy combo. Dark roasted malt, coffee and nutmeg, clove, ginger and anise. Also some fruits in the back. The #1001 has a much more balanced flavour profile than #1000, the spices blend perfectly with the roasted notes without being intrusive. This ale can be enjoyed even by those who are not huge spice fans. Moderate to heavy sweet taste with a moderate bitter and long-lasting finish. The alcohol is incredibly well integrated. The mouthfeel is pleasant, the body is full, the texture is oily but the carbonation is a tad too modest. A well crafted, inventive, smooth and balanced beauty. [25 cl bottle, batch #1001 (believe it or not), enjoyed 10 months after bottling, from Vinmonopolet Grønland, Oslo]
