3.7 Bottle shared at Daniels place. 20/02/2016. Many thanks to Daniel for this one. Oily dark brown coloured pour with no head. Aroma is cinnamon and brown sugars, little jammy fruits, sesame, hot alcohol. Flavour is composed of plum, jammy fruits, cinnamon, brown sticky sugars, chewy, little salty umami. Palate is thick and chewy, very sweet and sticky. Plummy.
4.0 Bottle presented in paper and a decorative tin, shared at home in Richmond, as ’Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon Third Edition’, 15.5%. Black with no real head. Aroma instantly shows how sweet this beer will be - chocolate liqueur and coffee syrup. Body is smooth and oily with low carbonation. Taste is sweet chocolate syrup, coffee, soy sauce. I’m not normally into sweet beers but I really enjoyed sipping on this. Great.
3.8 It is dark brown, almost black and not completely opaque. The head is small and not long lasting. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, licorice, burnt sugar and dark, dried fruit. The mout feel is olily. The flavor is sweet with notes of sweet licorice, roasted malt, dark fruits, a little burnt sugar and hints of port. The finish is long, initially sweet and later more bitter.
3.4 Bottle at Richmondo, big thanks to Dan. It pours darkest brown with a tiny off-white head. The nose is rich, oily, sweet, chocolate, fruit cake, vanilla, umami, sweet coffee, candied plums, toasted sesame and some soy sauce. The taste is rich, sweet, oily, sweet jam, dark fruits, prune, warming alcohol, earth, caramel, toffee, fruit cake and warming alcohol through the finish. Full body and chewy, oily mouth - feel. Well made, just far too sweet for me.
3.6 Bottle shared in Richmond - big thanks to Daniel! Pours deep brown, mostly clear, with a slight town foam head. Scorched malts in the nose, some booze, dark cocoa, ash. Big sweet flavor with syrupy chocolate, some toasted toffee, mellow earthy bitterness, dark fruits, berries, raisins. Full bodied, syrupy and chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming finish, with sugary chocolate, light bitter burnt earth, some stinging alcohol, brownies, more raisins, figs. This stuff is big and sweet. Enjoyable in small pours.
3.8 Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Small lively ashy beige head on topmof a black beer. Aromas of some hops, darker fruits like berries (but not tart), soy, chocolate, sweets, roast, coffee, alcohol. Flavour is soy, sweet, brown sugars, coffee, earthy, hint of peat, light spice/alcohol, some raisin, sweet and cloying... Aftertaste is sweet, light bitter, soy, brown sugars, light woody/sweet dried leaves and some chocolate... Low carbo, less watery than no.4 and a body between medium and full... Meh...
3.9 Bottle @ home. cellared since 2011. Pitch black with almost no head. Roasted and sweet aroma with coffee, dark chocolate, dark sugar, syrup, chilli, prunes and raisins, hints of blood. Alcohol is quite sharp in aroma but more so in the taste. Medium to big bodied mouth feel, low to medium carbonation. Taste is sharply roasted and cloyingly sweet with overall good and thorough vinousness. notes of espresso, chilli, raisins, prunes, caramel, dark chocolate, dark sugars, malt, licorice. Hints of fanilla. Lingering booziness, candy and syrup, leather, coffee and coffee bitterness.
2.7 Bottle sample @ BAJT. Pours viscous pitch black with a small mocha head that doesn’t leave much trace while dissipating. Smell is sweet and sugary with roasted malts, toffee, dark roast coffee, green chilli, raisins, prunes, moist soil and alcohol. Taste is heavy sweet, slightly bitter, malty and fruity. Mouthfeel is viscous, cloying sweet, roasted astringent, boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is heavy sweet and slightly bitter with roasted caramel, toffee, coffee hard candy, chocolate syrup, raisin and prune molasses, moist soil and alcohol. Awfully sweet and not much else. Hard to drink.
3.9 Big sweet beer with lots of chocolate, coffee, espresso, roasted grains and dark brown sugars. Quite full bodied with a very oily syrupy texture, lots of sweetness, coffee and some bitter chocolate bitterness. Lots of coffee, toffee and the bitterness at the end is very bitter chocolatey and slightly smoky. Burnt sugars, vanilla, bourbon, really good beer.
4.0 Bottle, from 03.07.08. Pours dark dark brown with no head, small light brown ring, very vinous. Aroma is really sweet and brown sugar, rock candy, sirup, fudge, port wine, grapes, puddersukker, coffee, some yeast. Aroma is super sweet! Gets some balance from burnt sugar and toasty malts. Reminds my of a cold irish coffee! Starts out like Kahlua. Very liquor-like, definitely a sipper, some dry liquorice, slight cinnamon. Medium to full oily body with sweet port wine finish. Slight bitter roasty coffee and some dry toasty malts. Warming alcohol. Slight more cocoa as i warms.
3.8 Bottle from 2008 thanks to LukasMH! Pours an oily, dark reddish brown with a small, oily head. Aroma has lots of brown sugar, syrup, port wine, booze, roasty malts, toast. Taste is extremely sweet. Lots of sugar, burned and roasty malt notes, coffee, slight rye, sticky sugar sweetness. Bitter finish with a big alcohol burn in the throat. Licorice. A true slow sipper! Very sticky and oily body and a low carbonation. Extremely tasty.
3.8 0.25 L bottle from Bieropholie in a nice tin canister, served cool in a tulip glass. Brewed 03/07/2008, BB 03/07/2018. App.: Fairly deep brown-black with no head whatsoever. Aroma: Sweet and very deep/dark, a little booze, goes deeper/darker than chocolate, coffee or molasses, almost black pepper, an odd bright note with some acidic black coffee, something that makes me think of bbq sauce (maybe smoky? Molasses? Spicy?). Palate: Medium-full body, nearly still, a little syrupy. Flav.: Quite a lot of coffee, very sweet, chocolate and molasses, a deep/dark/resinous note, more coffee, plenty of booze (not in a bad way though); sweet with a LOT of booze and a long finish of dark malts and coffee...lots of coffee. Seems to have held up well.
3.8 Bottle split outside Mikkeller Viktoriagade, thanks to Craig, 03/05/15. Pitch black topped with a dirty tan swirl and edgeing. Nose is big dark fruits, spice, raisens, sweet notes, sherry tones, light coca notes. Taste comprises sweet licks, chocolate dipped raisens, dates, fruit cake, dark chocoalte, charr, molasses, liquorice. Full bodied, oily feel, warming alcohol in the close. Solid impy, drinks well for 15%.
3.5 Bottle from my cellar after shoveling snow. Pours jet black with with large bubbled head that faded quickly. Nose is earth, funk, leather, smoke, and port wine. Firs sip is HUGHLY sweet with molasses, brown sugar, espresso with sugar, some mild cherry, and roasted barley. Finish is nice like the sip of coffee where the sugar didn’t completely dissolve.
4.7 Bottle, batch 373, enjoyed 6,5 years after bottling, and it’s a story about cellaring success! Pours black, with a minimal creamy mocha head. Aroma is dark roasted malts and notes of port, with tobacco, dark fruits and coffee, as well as notes of burned wood, lactose, cocoa, molasses and liquorice. Full, creamy body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet roasted malts, with tobacco, muscovado, dark chocolate and oak, as well as raisins, prunes and dark fruits, coffee, vanilla and earthy notes of heather and honey. Beautiful finish with notes of wood, dark fruits and sweet coffee. A sweet bugger for sure, but never even close to cloying or over the top, as the sweetness sublimely blends delicately, and close to perfection, with the dark notes of roasted bitterness.
3.2 Bottle. $13.99 for a small 8.5oz bottle packed in wrapping paper and a tin. Pours a dark brown with minimal head. Murky. Earthy aroma, dark chocolate, and some roast. Heavy mouthfeel. Bam! This is very sweet. Molasses, brown sugar, slight leather. It’s just so sweet that all other flavors are somewhat drowned out. Very smooth velvety mouthfeel.
4.1 8.5 oz. bottle that I think I bought at WIne and Cheese Place when I was living in St. Louis. Pours an inky deep, opaque brown with almost no head, just a little beige wispiness that departs not long after it shows up. Rich aroma - roasted malts, coffee, cacao nibs, molasses, earth, and ash. The flavor is sweeter and not as roasty, with molasses, cacao nibs, fudge, syrup, cola, coffee, and a bit of ash at the finish. Medium-bodied, with a sweet, coating mouthfeel and low carbonation. Probably a bit too much on the sweet side, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy this quite a lot.
3.6 Bottle share. Thanks GothGargoyle! Pours a clear, deep burnt amber. Aroma of green pepper, alcohol, muted dark fruit, wet coffee. Taste is dank sweetness, an odd sourness.
4.1 250 ml bottle thanks to Gunnar. Black as night body with dark brown head. Aromas of milk chocolate, liquorice, some coffee and alcohol. Taste is pretty sweet, maybe sweeter than the other vintage versions, with milk chocolate, vanilla, liquorice, some oak, maybe some dark fruits and coffee. Sweet aftertaste, pretty sticky mouthfeel. Medium to full body with low carbonation. My kind of Imperial Stous.
3.4 Bottle sample @ CK. deep brown with a small head. Nose Is ink cartridge. Pepper, dark cocoa. Taste is super sweet. Damn. Burnt brown sugar. Chocolate. A bit of soy sauce. Acidic roast coffee. Full body, oily. Meh.
3.7 Bottle, from tube. Orange paper inside, pour is no head, thick and syrupy taste is more of the same, big sweet beer with raisins and the like, minimal roasty flavor, almost chewy.. good body I love imperial stouts that make it known they are big heavy beers.
4.5 That is amazing! This is sweet. Fan of port wine? That’s nothing compared to this. The body is dark, there’s no head. The aroma is raisins, cognac. Smoke. The palate is incredibly full, the taste is so strong that you only need a drop at time. It’s sweet, molasses, prunes. The longest finish possible. Just wow.
3.8 sweet Jebus, they went sweeter. less char than volume 2 and the coffee is up front and center as opposed to in the background. overly sweetened coffee is the aroma and flavor, with some raisiny mollasses going on as well. more bitter at 100 ibus than sweet or red, which is nice, with a slight roasted malt character under the 15.5% abv. nice sipper...still too expensive...but i didn’t buy it :)"
3.6 Vintage moment at Finn’s Castle : Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon 3rd Edition. Beige but almost headless in the snifter, pitch-black body. A bouquet of liquorice, lots of fruits and sweets, and grapefruit peels passes my nose. Taste; powerful, prunes and malts, raisins and liquorice, fruits and grapes, candy grains and hops. Palate gets it to the max, power body and fruity de luxe. Very sweet-fruity, and finishes with syrup, apricots, fruit-liqueur or sherry. Luxurious late evening sipper. I saw no almonds but a beautiful midnight sun. Thanx 2 Finn :)
3.9 25 cl bottle @ home (2008 vintage). Pours black with a tiny tan head that leaves no lacing. Aroma and flavour are chocolate, coffee, dried fruit, sugar, tobacco, and liquorice - with a smooth and ever so slightly warming finish.
3.9 Flaska @ Bishop HBG. Väldigt vinning, mörk frukt, sötma från alkoholen. Fylligheten är perfekt, smaken balanserad.
3.4 Bottle from Tanakaya in Tokyo and brought back home. Been about two years or so in the cellar. Nose is dark chocolate, coffee liquor, raisin and dried dark fruit, something a bit tangy fruity, butter chocolate and roasted notes, slight oxidisation, sweet fruit liqueur or sweet wine vinous. Taste is sweet wine vinous, dark chocolate, coffee liquor, slight oxidisation, lots of raisin and sultana, dried fruit. Bit sweet for me. Like a chocolatey desert wine.
4.2 Bottle from cellar. Pours black and get some brown bubbles as a head that disappear quick. Aroma: coffee, roasted, rich, dark fruits and raisins, slight boozy note. Taste: nice and sweet, rich mouth full with notes of coffee, sweet raisins and almost a savoury quality, alcohol is well hidden. Amazing brew!
