4.2 500ml bottleIt is fairly dry, which allows the hops to dominate. There is bitterness up front, some balanced malts in the middle and complex fruity and resiny hop aromas which simply has no end.
3.4 My Nøgne Ø #40 :-) Strange that I have to go abroad to find the best Nøgne Ø gems. This one was waiting for me in Sweden. Dark brown colour with a tan head. Agressive rich complex aroma. Fruity, hoppy and malty. Not as bitter as I would expect at 100 IBU. More to the ususal DIPA/IPA sweet fruity side. Lots of malt inthis one also. And grape. Oily texture. Not for the fainthearted this one. [Bottle (Batch 402) at Bishops Arms in Malmö, Sweden]
3.5 Murky, dark brown colour and a nice, foamy tan head. Strong aroma with hops and hint of chocolate. Body is light and it feels very slick. The taste is pretty strong. There’s a notable taste of alcohol mixed with some coffee and chocolate. This beer feels a lot more like an imperial stout than an IPA. I haven’t had that many double IPAs so far but this one feels very different from the others. Interesting beer, nonetheless.
4.1 Courtesy of jrob21. Has a good sweet malt and some wooded pine aroma. Well this has to be the worse looking appearance dirty muddy water with off white head. So intriging had to give high score. Chewy citrus orange flavor with some dry resin bittering. good refreashnebt on the palate thx Johnathan
3.8 0.5l bottle #402 @ The Bishops Arms (Vasagatan), Stockholm. Pours a dark hazy copper body with a big bubbly and lacing just off-white head. The aroma is malty and quite sweet. You can really sense that this one has been stored for a few years! Some nice caramel and cortex leaking through here as well and hints of honey and a subtle alcohol touch. Lovely. It has a average to lively carbonation level and a really nice slick and oily mouthfeel. Flavors are dimmed down quite a lot, and considering this has been stored for 3 years it’s quite understandable. Still, it has a nice caramelish and malty touch blended with some oldish hops. Actually some licorice hints in the finish on this one. Quite nice stuff, and I’m really glad I got to taste this before it got completely extinguished.
4.0 500 ml bottle. Big, fruity barley wine nose, with caramel, dried fruits (plum, fig), big and juicy. Cloudy, muddy, dark amber brown. Dry, hoppy flavor with wood, big bitterness, dry dark chocolate, pine, plum, umeboshi. Nicely dry. Good stuff. More like a barley wine.
3.5 Bottle. Amber, hazy, average and mostly diminishing head. Moderate to full, malty and sweetish aroma, tropical fruitiness, grapefruit hoppyness and caramel. Body is medium to full, malty and sweetish flavor, piney and grapefruit hoppyness, some caramel and fruitiness. Finish is average to full, malty and sweetish, fruity with grapefruit hoppyness, some caramel and fruitiness with some toffee. Sweet DIPA, too fruity and caramel sweetish for me.
4.0 500 mL bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours murky dark orange / amber / brown with a medium beige head. Aroma screams tropical fruits, with mango, apricot, peaches and tangerine all prevalent, along with citrus hops, grapefruit and sufficiently backed caramel malts. Flavour is quite complex for an IPA, with mango, apricot, peaches and pungent grapefruit, and heaps of citrus hops, backed by a barrage of caramel malt. Finishes on a slightly bitter, grapefruity note. Most excellent.
4.1 500ml split with mcberko. Pours an interesting hazy or murky brown/orange. Looks untreated. Thick ring of foam around the edge of the glass. Aroma of candied sugar, caramel malts, lots of tropical fruits. Flavour is of sweet tropical fruits and caramel and soft to begin with, then the bitterness slowly crescendos to a beautiful finish. Flavour isn’t as hoppy as I expected. Nicely balanced, complex layers, Keeps you interested. Gorgeous.
3.9 500ml bottle @ Pikkulintu, Helsinki Pours dark orange with a nice smooth foamy head. Taste is fruity and sweet with notes of malts and hops. Bitter, fruity and sticky finish. Alcohol warms nicely. Quite nice, almost barley wine like IIPA.
3.8 Aroma: strong hops and malts Appearance: dark orange Taste: heavy hops and malts Palate: full body Overall: 17/20
3.3 500 ml bottle from Wine and Cheese Place. I’ve never gotten this before because I never know how long it’s been on the shelf, but this was a new batch. Pours a cloudy brown-amber color with a big khaki head that settles unevenly. Aroma of caramel malts, sweet dough, candi sugar, toast, rainwater, and some grassy hops in the background. Flavor of caramel malts, bitter hops, toasted brown sugar, graham crackers, and earth. Light-medium bodied, with a sweet, malty mouthfeel and lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation. Decent IIPA but doesn’t have enough hops to pair up with the abundant sweet malts.
3.0 Malzig-hefiger Geruch. /9/9/9//9
3.4 500ml Bottle (O’Connor’s, Uppsala) - Amber with a foamy head. Fruity aroma with marzipan, berries and hops. Tangy, fruity and hoppy taste with notes of pine, dried fruit and caramel. Not bad, although it would’ve perhaps been better when it was more fresh.
3.6 500ml bottle fro dkachur. Thanks Dan. Pours a hazy chestnut brown color with a big clumpy beige head that has great retention and amazing lacing. The aroma is strong with caramel, oxidized pine resins and toffee. The flavor is similar to the aroma with lots of oxidized hops, pine, caramel, toffee, leather and tobacco. The palate is full and silky smooth with lively carbonation. Finishes long and biter. Overall: This beer is well past its prime, but still holding up (just like me). Very tasty quaff.
3.3 29th April 2009 Cloudy brown beer, thickish tan head. Soft to dry palate - frothy and creamy in the mouth. Some malt and a quite a bit of hop but they are reasonably well behaved. A spicy finish with some aniseed. Serviceable IPA.
2.8 Bottle @ home. Pours a dark brown/orange appearance with a big creamy-orange colored head. Sweet pale maltiness in the nose along with a significant hoppy aroma. Flavor is of a darker pale and amber malt content than most Imperial IPAs. Some hoppiness but it’s not as significant in flavor as 100 IBU may seem to sugest. Piney hoppy finish with a thick mouthfeel. Unique Imperial IPA but not one of the better ones.
3.9 Pours much darker than I anticipated, however when I look through the beer it appears a translucent reddish brown color. Aroma is rather heavy on the malt for my taste, however; I can smell a good hint of hops behind the malt. The taste begins with a a light malty taste but quickly moves on to the hops, and finishes very cleanly. Overall I am enjoying this beer, however for the category it represents it isn’t a top contender.
3.6 Translucent caramel pour with an off white head, very good lacing. Nose of floral hops, citrus hops, and caramel malt. Taste is sweet at first, finishes with lasting bitterness. A very good ipa, but if you want the best, look elsewhere. The bitterness isn’t balanced well enough and is a little overpowering, and you can check my other ratings, I love a bitter ipa.
3.1 Oxidized aroma, uneven head, little caramelized aroma. Dense, notes of cedar, quite a lot in fact. Hops pop in the finish, seems ’constructed’? can’t read my notes.
4.5 13-Oct-09 (500-ml bottle: Purchased 29-Sep-09 for $9.44 from liquidsolutions.biz) Pours a very cloudy, amber-brown body and a lively, light-tan head that, despite a careful pour, quickly balloons to nearly two inches in height before slowly settling to a quarter-inch layer. The heavily malty nose immediately draws me in – this isn’t the typical double IPA. It smells very, very toasty, slightly smoky, lots of rich earth and forest floor, some mushroom, and in the way of hops, a modest dustiness and a touch of pine. The first sip reveals similar characteristics: a moderately sweet, and very malt-dominated beer with a lot of earth, toasty and caramely malts, some mushroominess and a hint of fireplace smokiness. But for a double IPA, the hops are very much relegated to the background, strongly suggesting that this beer has seen a significant amount of age. The hops are lightly citrusy and piney with mild bitterness. There’s a mild acidity and bitterness in the background that does help to bring some balance on the palate, but nevertheless, the mouthfeel is sweet, dense and full-bodied from all the malt domination. Carbonation is surprisingly smooth and not especially voluminous in the mouth considering how carbonated the pour was – much of the carbonation was released upon pouring. This may not be the kind of beer people expect from a double IPA, but it’s very reminiscent of an aged double IPA but with the benefit of not having to wait two years. It is what it is, and that is a big, deliciously malty beer perfect for sipping over the course of an hour or two. If this were available locally and weren’t so expensive, it would probably be a multiple bottle purchase.
3.6 Cloudy orange pour with a frothy head. Aroma of caramel, honey, biscuits, and light spice. Flavor is a bit yeasty, some light hops, not much bitterness. Interesting.
3.4 Tasted from a 500mL bottle purchased at Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. Pours a cloudy amber with an average white head that leaves an even blanket of lace. The nose is primarily caramel malt with a solid amount of resin and citrus hops. The flavor features the hops a little more than the nose would have suggested with a good amount of caramel malt and some good fruits as well. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long bitter, citrus, and caramel malt finish.
3.4 Nice and tasty brew, feel a lot like batch #100 with lots of hops, fruits, dark malt and lovley well balanced strongness.
3.7 500m bottle. Pours dark golden amber with thick rocky head. The aroma consists of resin, floral, herbs, grapefruit and caramel. The taste is moderately sweet and very bitter.
4.4 pours cloudy brownish copper, off white head sticks around, nose is caramel, hoppy, grassy notes, toffee, suprising amount of malts coming through, taste is hoppy, citrus orange, some vanilla, grass, herbacious big flavor. this is a delicate and delicious as a double ipa can get. really delicous.
3.8 Very nice beer. Pours a dark brown with a small white head and good lacing. Aroma is piney hops, grapefruit and slight malt. Taste is a smooth pine hop bitterness backed by small grapefruit and a slightly roasted malt.
3.7 It starts out as a hoppy aroma and then goes spur. The flavor is malty red amber, thick and with a sufficient head. The flavor is lightly hopped on top of a smooth malty base, the backbone. It tastes pure but has a nice amount of thses flavors combined on the palate.
3.5 500 ml. bottle. 8% ABV. Pours a thick, off white, lasting head, with extensive "sea foam" lacing, over a slightly hazy, somewhat particle laden, dark amber (SRM 9) body.....nose is pine, grapefruit, pineapple, toffee/caramel.....taste is sweet malts with toffee/caramel to start, then pineapple, pine, bit of grapefruit, finishing with a moderate lingering bitterness....mouth feel is medium, carbonation also. This is a nicely balanced IIPA, with the bitterness well constrained by the sweet malts. It is probably well aged, because it has many of the qualities of a Barley Wine. BJCP 8/2/15/4/7
