"Can you fill these empty barrels with something fun?" That was the challenge Kjetil presented me with over a coffee a stormy Tuesday morning in October."How about something strong and dark?" I wondered. "25% dark malts, 30% rye, 28 degres Plato."That’ll never work." said Kjetil. 1 kilo malts/L, 48 hours of brewing and 2 years on old Armanac barrels later, I feel free to say: "Well, wouldn’t you know... it worked".

(Rating #6862)
3.8 330 ML bottle Oil black pour. 40 weight I suppose. Big burly dark leather head. BIG AVB legs, spotty lacing. Thick and sludgy in the glass. Nose is booze, burnt tires, burnt malt, bitter chocolate, bitter coffee, Armagnac, wood, and earth. Got spirits right off the bat, dry baking chocolate, roast and burnt grains and malt, tires. Quite dry but should expect that from Nogne. Dry finish but lingering sweetness. Good combo. Light carbonation. This is tasty.
3.9 I bought this beer because I didn’t think it could possibly work. Somehow though, it did. It was super sweet, but not cloying. Has some nice spicy rye notes. I don’t remember much else, it was a while ago, but surely it was "something fun".
4.5 Stunning beer. Right from the pour you know you’re in for something great. Rich, dark long-lost malt echoes up front, then wood barrel, vanilla, cocoa, marshmallow, cognac, some heat that lingers. So so tasty. Make some more please
4.0 Bottle (330 ml) at home. Pitch black with a small very dark brown head, quickly recessing but easy to revive for the first few minutes, leaving no lacing but some legs on the glass. Aroma is most of roasted malts, dark chocolate and wood but it’s nicely completed by cognac (which I guess is armagnac), red fruits, perfumy notes from the rye and a bit of anise. Taste is sweet, but not more than what you can expect from a 14% abv stout with molasses, dark chocolate, roasted malts, cognac, wood, vanilla, mild spiciness, some alcohol heat, berries, anise and soy sauce. Full body. Soft carbonation. Viscous and thick mouthfeel. Quite oily as well. Woodsy finish with salty notes and warming, but never burning, alcohol. I’m usually not a fan of rye and/or anise in my stouts but it works quite nicely with this one. The taste is particularly complex and despite being sweet, sugar and boozy it’s palatable and I had no problem drinking the whole bottle by myself over a few hours. Very tasty stuff.
3.8 Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus and Joes. Opaque pitch black color, average sized dark brown head. Aroma is malts, sweetish, a bit in between cognac and sherry, but that aroma is quite firm. Taste malts, roast, definitely some liquor, quite nicely bitter in the finish. Medium body and carbonation. Heavy but nice.
3.5 Bottle @ joes. Black colour with a small beige head. Smells appelstroop, swet, alcoholic, dark malts. Tastes sourish, cherry peel, oak, boozy. Medium to full body, soft carbo.
3.9 (Nøgne Ø Dragonwort Stout) Bottle 330 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 14% Pours thick as motor oil, with a totally black colour on the body. No actual head, just a thin, dark brown line of foam around the glass. Aroma of molasses, alcohol, light brandy. Great taste, roasted malts, alcohol, brandy, wood, molasses. You know when you had a long time of drinking beers and then spirits and you finally go home and everything is turning around? And after a while you have to let everything out so ou’re pushing a finger or two in your throat over the toilet bowl, and after you’re done you have this sweet/sour taste in your mouth, feeling relieved and knowing this was a good night. That’s the aftertaste of this beer. Great! Medium thick body, nicely carbonated. Very good, boozy but so drinkable.
4.2 Bottle a black colored beer with a tiny beige head aroma roasted malts coffee laurel spicy oak alcohol caramel and some hops flavor roasted malts spicy coffee caramel laurel oak alcohol dark fruits and some spicy and alcohol in the aftertaste
4.1 Bottle, gift from SlovakSniper from trade. Thanks man! Aroma: strong coffee aroma, lots of roasted malt, chocolate and boozy, in the good way. App: pitch black, small dark brown head, little lacing. Taste and palate: full body, medium sweetness covered by really present alcohol taste, light bitter and alcohol burning finish. Overall: great! When tasting it there is no doubt that the abv is really high but I like it. It’s really comforting. Glad I didn’t have any beer before this one though, one will be enough to sleep really well.
4.2 DWF; Bottle 0,33L, drunk at Cardinal. Pours moderate, black with creamy, lacing and lasting tan head. Nose is heavy, dark dried fruit, pruns, roasted malt, chocolate, coffe, cognac vinious, light liqorice and wood. Taste is heavy sweet and moderate bitter with lasting sherry warming finish. Body is full, texture is creamy, carbonation is soft. Allright!
4.3 Bottle at Bishop’s Portervecka 2015. Oily black, dark brown head. Aroma: dark fruit, chocolate pralines, sweet licorice. Taste: sweet licorice, chocolate, cognac, creamy, the mint-ish-covered fennel seeds you get as a palate cleanser at an Indian restaurant. Sticky mouthfeel.

Drukket i Skibotn 29 Jul 15. Svart. Lavt mokkafarget skum som flater ut. Nydelig aroma av lakris & nøtter. Oljeaktig munnfølelse. Sammensatt kompleks smak. Rosiner. Lakris. Sjokolade. Nøtter. Røstet malt. Bunnfall igjen på flaska. Usedvanlig bra øl.
4.0 My Bottom Line: Molasses envelop roast and wood, as dark chocolate shares fruity edges in this viscous, wealthy monster of a Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout. Further Personal Perceptions: -A slice of foam sits atop the blackest black. -Can’t really tell what type of barrel was used here, but the wood itself is certainly perceived. -Residual sugars are heavy. But then again, when you buy chocolate cake, you expect cake-level sweetness, right? -Black bean and aniseed flavors are found as well. -The building chocolatey finish is particularly enjoyable. -A well-crafted Imperial Stout from Nogne O is no surprise. But this is still different enough from their year-round Impy (which I absolutely love). Bottle.
3.7 33 cl bottle @ home. Batch #882: brewed 05.11.2012, BBE 05.11.2027 Aroma has rubber, some spices, licorice and soy sauce. Flavour has spices, cardamom, cinnamon, licorice and mild alcohol tones. Quite interesting; I thought this would be another booze-IS but I actually like the cinnamon here. Like a liquid gingerbread cookie.
3.5 330ml bottle. Batch 882, brygget 05.11.12, best før 05.11.27. Pours dark brown, almost black with a small head. Aroma of dark vinous berries, syrup, wood, sweet oak, dark chocolate and roastiness. Taste is sweet and complex with some dark vinous berries, hints of tartness, spices, wood, roasty malts, anise and loads of syrup. Finish is sweet, sticky and syrupy with loads of berries, some roastiness, anise and spices. Quite untypical and a bit weird even. Slightly too boozy though.
4.0 Bottle from Vinmonopolet, Kvadrat. Pours pitch black with a big creamy tanned head. Strong aroma of roasted malts, barrel and liquorice, complex and inviting. Smooth weak boozy mouthfeel. Rich and complex taste of dark malts and liquorice, wood and alcohols. Lingering light woody alcohol burn at the finish.
4.1 Pours very dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee and liquorice. Flavor is roasted malts, coffee, alcohol, liquorice and hops. Nice.
4.1 Looks.. Black, dark brown hue on edges, sml brown head. Smells.. Roasty malts, rye, liquor and oak. Tastes..thick dark chocolate, rye, coffee, some boozy cherry and almanac..oak ..alcohol.. bitter earthy coffee grind finish.
4.0 Bouteille 50cl, batch#882, BB 05/11/2027.
3.6 Bottle. Black with very little tan head. Aroma of dried fruit, licorice. Taste is roasty with licorice. Quite bitter, bit hot

3.6 Bottle split at the Bishops Arms opposite the main square in Malmo, RBESG ’15 day 2, 21/08/15. Pitch black with a big old dirty tan head. Nose carries sweet notes, spice, roast malt, toffee, liquorice, chocolate fudge.TTaste comprises aniseed, big barrel licks, dark chocolate, spice, light charr. Full bodied, viscous feel, warming alcohol in the close. Decent impy but perhaps a touch hot and heavy.
3.6 pours unclear very dark brown with a creamy light beige cap, some retention and lacing. salty and smoky raisins - burnt raisins, roasted spiciness - rye perhaps; dark spiced rum, lots of licorice and other spices, astringent booze, bovril*TM and other strong umami flavours. light to low carbonation, full body - oily and syrupy; boozy and spicy-licorice finish. heavy and hot but interestingly complex enough.
4.0 Bottle, consumed during my 2015 FF draft. Right. So who the fuck puts tarragon in their beer? Nøgne Ø, that’s who! It pours motor oil thick, with 50,000km on it. Scant brown head. Well, there’s no tarragon in the nose, although there is lots of heavy dark malts, brine and soy, hints of dark fruits on the deep inhale. Big chewy malty body, lots of soy sauce, again briny and husky, something a bit earthy perhaps that steers things away from the dark fruits and keeps this definitively NOT SWEET. But no tarragon, truly. Was that alliteration? Anyway. The finish is certainly biiter and dry, which helps to hide the ABV. Overall this beer is very enjoyable for those who like a rich malt bomb that is more salty/savory than sweet/boozy. Cool. Tasty, provided you’re cool with the parameters. Plus, watch out. It WILL: fuck. you. up.
