Nøgne Ø / Dugges Sahti

Nøgne Ø / Dugges Sahti

A special twist on the Finnish style Sahti, brewed at Nøgne Ø in cooperation between Dugges Brewery, Sweden, and Nøgne Ø of Norway. Brewed with rye and wheat, sea wormwood from the Swedish archipelago, juniper twigs from the Norwegian forests, honey from heather flowers in Telemark and three selected yeast strains from Belgium, Germany and Britain, and of course, some malt and hops too.

3.3 How: Bottle. Where: Man in the Moon, Stockholm. Appearance: Amber colour with a small white head. Aroma: Sweet, honey, juniper. Body: Medium body, low carbonation. Flavour: Sweet, spices, juniper, fruit, hops. Comment: I don’t have much (any) experience with sahti so can’t say how close to the real deal this beer is. It is quite drinkable, not a very good beer, but definitely something that goes down without to much struggle.
2.1 Bottled. Amber in color with a small head. Quite sweet aroma, some grainy notes, some sugary honey kind of as well. Pretty similar in taste. This was a bit weird sweety one.
1.7 Bottle@sbwf’13. This was awful. Has no resemblense to sahti, which is ok, but only if it wasn’t on the brink of being unpalatable. Malts and honey in taste, with a weird twist of juniper and random foresty twigs’n’shit thrown in. It’s sweet, overpowering with a gaggability. And with nothing to balance it out, it’s annoyingly cloying. Made using (I persume) an ale yeast, it’s pretty far off anything anyone could call sahti. But I like the idea of using junipers in brews. Just don’t pack ’em full of unfermented sugars that make it discusting.
2.5 Sample from bottle @ sbwf13. Clear amber thin head. Mostly honey in this beer. Flavorwise honey soaked in water, not much else here. What?
3.9 br>Appearance: Cloudy dark color and almost no head. Aroma: Fruity and sour with some honey notes. Palate: Medium + body, a bit sour and a fine sweetness. Soft carbonation. Oily texture. Taste: Round sweet fruity, acidic and sour. Overall impression: Really complex stuff. Lovely balanced sweet honey and fruity on a solid malty back. Personal stats: Bottle from a trade with Yngwie. Batch 382.
4.2 Bottle, courtesy of Cunningham and yngwie. orange golden color with small white head. Aroma of juniper, wheat, yeast, honey. Taste, rye, honey, juniper, wheat, caramel, wood, peat. Peaty bitterness in finish. Alcohol is well hidden. We had also Pihamaan Sahti with 9 % ABV during our tasting session and I could see some similarities between the two. Very tasty beer.
4.1 Bottled. One word: fantastic! Honey aroma and taste! Absolutely great! If you love honey then this is it!
3.8 Bottle. Probably the last bottle in the world :). Aroma is extra sweet, lot of honey, juniperus, lot of alcohol, hints of wheat. Extra honey taste, great! Taste in sweet, juniperus, low bitterness. Very nice beer!
3.6 Bottle. Pours cloudy golden with a small off-white head. Aroma of honey, herbs, malt, some oxidized malt and caramel. Flavor is sweet honey and oxidized malt with some floral and herbal noMe
3.8 500ml bottle. My first experience with this style. Pours a very hazy orange with a pillowy white head. An extraordinary aroma of damp moss is the first to emerge, followed by honey, rye grain and berries. It’s all of nature in a bottle. Tastes of bitter oranges, honey and light rye spiciness as it finishes. Very interesting beer, and for a bottle nearly five years old it’s holding up well.
3.5 Bottle. Sweet strong floral honey, fruity vanilla, and bready malt aroma. Cloudy amber with a moderate ivory head, flocculation. Bready malt, stong floral honey, and spicy flavor. Full viscous body, soft carbonation. Very interesting. Since I’m a big fan of floral flavors, I enjoyed this one. Was a little disappointed the juniper didn’t come through.
3.6 Bottle. First I am wondering why this is listed as a specialty grain brew when it is clearly a Sahti riff. Regradless this is a viscous herbal brew with lots of interesting flavors coursing though it. Pours a deep amber brown with a thin tan head.
3.4 Bottle:   Deep caramel, very dirty, lots of sediment, moderate to large frothy sandy head, fairly nice lacing.   Very sweet pale bread aroma, and very strong musty honey.   Smells like a Bit O Honey candy bar.   Smooth up front, body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Seems fairly sweet, honey and honeycomb, a bit of low shrub type berries, and a bit of shrubbery itself.   Warming but not hot.   Seems a bit cloying on the backside, especially on big sips.   Decent brew, but almost too rich and sweet.   Could use some carbonation to relieve some of that stickiness.
3.6 (Bottle) Hazy amber colour with foamy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with honey, dried fruit, flowers, rye bread and a touch of juniper berries. Aromas of honey dominate after a while. Fruity, malty taste with notes of honey, rye bread, juniper berries, flowers and a bitter-sweet finish with spicy hints of wormwood. Almost full body, fairly sweet. A fair amount of alcohol shining through. Different, but quite nice.
3.3 50 cl bottle @ home. Batch #382, bottled 16.09.2008, BBE 16.09.2013. Rated on 07.05.2010 Aroma is somewhat sweet and perfume‐like. It has with honey, some yeasty and boozy notes. Flavour is sweet with quite stinging alcohol. Also honey, some herbs (juniper?) and yeast. Not a Sahti in any way – and not a good beer either. A disappointment from Nøgne.
3.3 500 ml bottle from Wine and Cheese Place. Bottle was not date coded but I bought it in 2010. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma of wheat, rye, honey, wood, and juniper. Flavor is the same. A little dusty, musty, and dry. Light-bodied, with soft carbonation. Dry all the way through. Maybe a little too old to work better.
3.4 Bottle from Mane Liquor. Amber pour with little head to it. Sweet, floral and farmhouse-like notes on the nose. Loads of zesty citrus and woody undertones. Sweet and tarty juniper berries with some grass and woody tones through the taste. My first go at a Sahti and very unusual
3.3 50 cl bottle. Originally rated on 20100507. Pours murky brown color with a small head. Aroma of ripe fruits, some malts, herbs and juniper. Flavor of malts, fruits, yeast and some herbs. A bit unbalanced.
4.2 I had Finnish sahti many many years ago in Finland, in a time when I just took it for granted and never bothered about subtleties. Now I can at least report that this multi-national non-Finnish sahti is beautiful Baltic amber, cloudy, and with bits suspended inside, as in the petrified resin to be found in Finnish shores, with a dirty off-white head. The nose was strong forest honey, deliciously alluring, pulling us to dive into the taste, malty, very sweet with honey, and perhaps some resinous tones that could be of the wormwood, how would I know? It’s all well packed nicely into an agreeable sweet, but well-balanced ale. The "finnish" is sweet, with a bitternesss that raises itself far away, silently and in coloured waves, as the norther lights behind the thick black canopy of the forest. Fantastic ale. Too bad it says "retired" here. They should certainly make it a regular product.
3.7 Bottle shared by drabmuh. Thanks Matt! A: The beer is murky and orange in color with about a half inch of head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. S: Scents of fruits, herbal tea, malts, earth. Overall, a really nice blend of fruity, floral aromas. T: This is some tasty brew. Apples, apple cider, tea, and a variety malts comprise the basic flavor makeup. The beer is very smooth and easy going down. It possesses a bread-like quality that I find to be enjoyable. M: The 11% alcohol is very well hidden. I honestly would not have guessed the alcohol content could be that high. The beer has a nice feel, and again, is very smooth, especially given the 11% abv. D: A very good example of the style. I would definitely drink this again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-04-2010
3.7 6th January 2010 Cloudy amber beer, light frothy white head. Rich honey nose. Light and soft palate, slightly dry. Deep rich honey, sweet and slightly floral. Pinch of spice and then something perfumey and also bitter at the same time, possibly the wormwood. Finishes soft and with a little hop bitterness and aniseed alcohol. Unusual and well flavoured, more integrated as the beer warms up.
3.4 Aroma of honey, nuts, herbs and berries. Appearance is chunky cloudy light brown with dusty tan head. Flavor reminds me of a barleywine, but with extra spices and such; the finish is quite boozy. Palate is creamy. Interesting.
3.8 Hazy pumpkin orange half inch head.Good carbonation. Nice aroma of honey malt sweetness a mildly spiced berry with some big pasty breadiness, some oaklike notes maybe from honey, overall a nice sweet malty floral unique fruit berry, very slightly sour-like sourdough. Taste is similar to aroma,on the sweet side but flavofull with some mild citrus tang towards the end slight lemon.Nice full mouthfeel. The sweet breadiness remides me of mikkeller hop series malt taste.Pretty good-glad i picked up this discontinued beer.
4.1 500 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Gusher upon opening. Pours very cloudy reddish orange color with a small 1 finger off white head with good retention, that reduces to a very thin cap. Some light spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big honey, grape, pepper, molasses, raisin, herbal, cherry, floral, citrus peel, and yeast spices. Beautiful aromas here with great balance and complexity. Taste of caramel, honey, molasses, pepper, grape, raisin, earth, herbal, floral, citrus peel, banana, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of caramel, molasses, herbal, floral, grape, pepper, and yeast spices on the finish for a while. Great balance of flavors; with absolutely no cloying at all. Medium carbonation and full bodied; with a very nice creamy, slick, and thick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden at 11%, with only a warming after the finish noticed; definitely a slow sipper. Overall this is a great sahti! It felt a bit unbalanced at first; but it smoothed out as it reached room temperature. Really well done.
3.6 500 ml bottle shared @ Ölrepubliken. Pours hazy reddish orange with a small creamy white head that slowly dissipates while clinging to the glass leaving lots of lacing. Smell is sweet, fruity and floral with honey, plums, lemon zest, caramel, wood, hay, dried juniper berries and hints of oxidation. Taste is sweet and tiny sour and tiny metallic with loads of honey, wood, juniper berries, very dark sweet bread, hay, prunes, lemon zest and hints of quality tobacco. Mouthfeel is sticky sweet, round and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet with honey, flower nectar, wood and hay. Very sweet but good in small doses so share the bottle.
2.1 Strong, sticky beer with too much honey aroma and disgusting honey taste (Are you Winnie the Pooh plush or like honey beer is here probably ok)
3.7 Bottle poured into a dimpled mug. Somehow this looks ancient, primitive, and very cool. It has so much sediment floating around, including some big chunks. The beer is mid brown and very unique. A nice noisy off white head gave up quickly. The smell comes at you with spices, honey, and is like a home recipe for the common cold. It tastes a little like that recipe, too. I note plenty of honey, earth galore, spices such as cinnamon, malt. This is not quite as primitive tasting as it appears and smells and sometimes resembles a mead. It is an interesting beer and is tasty, too. Glad I picked it up.
