Nøgne Ø Imperial Dunkel Wit

Nøgne Ø Imperial Dunkel Wit

Imperial DunkelWit from Nøgne Ø is an attempt to combine the best of many brewing cultures. Indeed we hope to please the Belgian ale partisan, the dark ale enthusiast, as well as those who love big ales with this one product. That is a tough ambition. At least we had fun brewing it......

Ingredients: Grimstad water, wheat, malted barley, coriander, orange peel, hops and yeast.

3.5 500ml bottle. Cola mahogany with a thinning yellow beige head becoming a halo. Intensely aromatic Belgian aroma of fruit jellies, candied peel, perfumed coriander and Keith’s coriandered homebrew: literally a 5% kit bitter bottled with date expired ground spice out of the back of the cupboard. Dangerous Belgian flavour (bonus point); all yeast, spice, perfumed Cointreau and madness. Huge orange. Entirely likeable if completely one-dimensional and a bit demented.
3.0 Dark brown, slightly transluscent. Some liquorice in aroma. Lots of coriander and aftertaste
3.8 Pours dark brown, not cloudy at all. Aroma is strong coriander and spice. getting excited to take a sip. Flavour is completely unexpected. Very mild wheat, coriander is dominating in the flavor almost spicy. At the same time, smoothness is not lost and there is no hint of booze at all. Overall a confusing yet amazing experience.
3.3 Bottle shared at the Tuesday Night Horal Chugging Tasting - many thanks to Colin. Pours cloudy amber with a tight, off-white froth head. Nose of light lime and bread. Big sweet flavor, very floral, with further lime, bread and yeast. Full bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Sweet finish with floral bitterness, light dough, more lime. Weird. Tastes nice, but it is odd.
3.9 Bottle, I think from Kris Wines. Seriously crazy stuff here. Dark brown beer, slightest hint of wheaty cloudiness and that weird red brown colour, white head. Amazingly strong spicy nose, ground coriander really dominating. Taste is more coriander, some yeast, solid dark maltiness. Booze well hidden. Don’t really know what to make of it all...must be really screwing up all those who try to rate to style! I certainly wouldn’t want to drink this every day, but it was a unique taste experience and I think I’d have one again. Maybe just with a bit less coriander.
3.6 Bottle, thanks to Colin at the Tuesday Horal Chugging Tasting. It pours opaque dark brown with a small-medium beige head. the nose is roasted malt, toast, soft fruit, toffee, herbs and chocolate. The taste is roasted malt, toast, earth, dark fruit, plum, chocolate, herbal notes and spice with a dry, bitter-sweet finish. Medium+ body and fine carbonation. Solid.
3.6 Craft Clerkenwell, Tuesday Horal Chugging Tasting, 17/09/13. Murky mahogony brown with a good sized tan head. Nose is toffee, spice, light nana, aniseed. Taste comprises toffee, herbal notes, hemp seed, honey, perfumed notes, light sugar, yeast esters. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Decent drop.
3.3 6 month old+ 500ml bottle shared at home. 1st time I had this, I wasn’t really rating, but I remember it being really hoppy on the aroma. This has all gone now, replaced by orange, rosehip, honey, and liquorice. Some light roasted notes, but not a lot. Pours a lovely dark near-black, good off-white head. Light carbonation. On the taste, dark sugars come through at the end, but it’s a confusion of orange and coriander seed at first. Doesn’t taste 10%. Good, but not great.
3.7 Pours brown with an inch thick head, and lots of sediments if you’re not too careful. Head is all but gone after a few sips. Aroma is surprisingly smoky, with sweet malts and some dark fruits. Decent mouthfeel on this one, with a very malty sweet taste. There is a hint of smoke or roasted malts, some caramel and dark fruits like figs or plums. It has a spicy touch from the coriander as well. Not dominated by alcohol at all, despite the 10% abv. Obviously a blend of beer types from Nøgne Ø, but it works out well for me.
2.2 500ml bottle. Pours an opaque deep chestnut, with a small light beige head, which lasts reasonably well, and leaves a little lacing. The dominant aroma is cough syrup, with some mild orange peel and molasses notes in the mix. Mild spice hops up front lead into a bizarrely medicinal mix of cough syrup, orange peel and Vegemite. Coriander leads into a hot, alcoholic finish. This is a very messy beer. Its weird melange of styles feels slapdash, the body is too syrupy, the flavour too medicinal and it hides its high ABV poorly. A poor effort from a usually good brewer.
2.7 Bottle. Pours a mostly clear very dark brown color with a small white head on it. This is definitely spicy and citrusy, since I can get the coriander and orange elements in the smell. Taste is a little too sweet and "special" with an almost ginger flavor coming through, though it’s a tad dark. Not a fan of the taste of this.
3.3 500 ml bottle shared with the group. Pours a clear brown color with a small off white head. The aroma istoasted caramel, orange zest, herbal spices with wheat character. The flavor opens with a big burst of air freshener, floral, herbal, some sweet caramel malts and light earthy bitterness. A strange beer, not one of my favorites.
3.2 Bottle. Dark brown with small tan head. Aroma is malt, spices, yeast, caramel and coriander. Flavour is malt, spices, sweet, caramel, yeast, coriander, hop and medium bitter.
4.0 Brown reddish liquid with a medium beige head. Sweet aroma of roasted breadcrumbs, citrus and pine. Taste is very belgian ale, with some pilsner-assosiations. Alot of malty sweetness and some funkyness. Rich mouthfeel.
3.7 Bottle - 500ml. Cloudy dark brown body with a thin off-white foamy/creamy head. good malty/hoppy aroma with piney and herbal hints. Alcohol is very well hidden. Its complex taste carries piney, yeasty, citrusy, and some licorice notes. Ends with a long, robust, warming bittersweet finish. Interesting.
3.4 Bottle. Pours clear dark golden, with a big creamy head. Peculiar sweet aroma with toffee and yeast, as well as a good dose of tutti frutti chewing gum and assorted fruits. Not really bad, but definitely quite weird. Full body, with average carbonation. Flavour is sweet with roasted malts, molasses, raisins and prunes, and with an almost amazingly finish.
3.8 Draft at Farmers Cabinet for a None O event. Very dark copper pour with an off-white foam. Molasses. Deep rich red fruit. Not a typical Dunkel Wit at all. Figs. Raisins. Black plums. Peppercorns. Vegemite. Gently sweet with a black heart. Liked much more than expected.
3.4 Bottle. Brownish black beer with a fairly strong head. The aroma is malty with some fruity yeastiness, and the flavour is sugary sweet with maltyness and a gentle bitterness. Overall a good beer.
4.1 500 ml bottle @ Tilt Bar,Oslo.April 10, 2013 Beer from a tulip glass Dark brown in color. Aroma is citrus, malt, yeast and a bit alcohol. Taste is a bit sweet and warm due to high ABV. Very interesting and nice beer in my opinion.
3.2 Big bottle from Belmont Station, Portland OR. Dark brown body with thin hazy head. Nose is sweet, fruity, caramel. Taste is caramel, roasty malts, barley and orange peel. Smooth and creamy texture. Enjoyable but also a bit funky.
3.5 Smak och doft av parafymerad tvål, russin, nötter, apelsinskal, läkerol original och en aning laktristoner. Svårfångad i sitt smakregister. Bra beska.
4.4 Bottle, from Vinmonoplet Örsta -Norway! Darl red colour, with a nice big head. Aroma had a dominans of smokey, citrus, dusty, belgian yeasty, and a bit banana. Flavor had smouth mouthfeeling of a nice complexity, with caramelly, flowers citrus, yeasty, banana! This was a werry nice surprice! Werry good indeed!!
3.6 On tap @Barcelona Beer Festival 2013. Malty, caramel and spicy aromas, among some roasted ones. Pours brown, murky, with some amber reflections. Medium body, average carbonation, oily texture. Taste is malty, sweet, spicy. Aftertaste is long and sweet.
3.8 Bottle 0,5l. Pours a dark brown, clear, small white head. Aroma of coriander, blackcurrant, orange peel and yeast. Taste of coriander, citrus, smoke and chocolate.
3.7 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured hazy yellow color with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate spice, yeast and alcohol aroma. Medium body with a tingly texture and soft carbonation. Medium spice sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.
4.2 .5L bottle. 10% ABV. Dark brown color, light tan head. Loads of fruity pebbles cereal in the nose. Lots of coriander, and orange peel scent. A Yankee candle, but a good one. Long legs running down the glass. Thick bodied, and whoa strong. Well balanced flavor, dark malt, sweet, and nice floral fruit essence in the finish. Very strong and even more flavorful than anticipated. (3625)
3.8 50cl bottle from Vinmonopolet. Pours slightly hazy dark amber with an off-white head. Very fruity aroma with banana, wheat and hints of spices, citrus, yeast and malt. Sweet and fruity with a slightly dry and lightly bitter finish. Well balanced. Very nice and tasty! (2013-02-23)
