Nøgne Ø Mandarina IPA

Nøgne Ø Mandarina IPA

Imagine that the German have come up with a high alpha fruity hop! "Could that be right?" we asked ourselves. We were in luck to get 100 kgs. The new wonder hop bears the name Mandarina, and it’s presently not commercially available. And how could we present this hop with all it’s glory? By brewing an IPA of course. Please welcome Mandarina IPA.

3.8 Bottle (50cl) from Vinmonopolet (Vika), Oslo. Inch-thick off-white head, good retention, leaves a lot of lacing. Rich aroma of ’dark’ concentrated citrus, pine, clementine peel, caramel. Medium body, soft carbonation, refreshing mouthfeel. Well-balanced piney-fruity taste, fairly sweet, very bitter, with an interesting super-lemony twist in the finish.
3.9 0.5L bottle at home, dark orange beer with a medium head, aroma is citrus, many fruits. Taste is citrus, fruits, bitter. Very Nice
3.6 bottle pour at braukunst live 2014 in munich. lightly hazed amber with a thin but lingering head; plenty of synthetic mandarin in the aroma; cottees orange mandarin cordial, rusty tea, good whack of bitterness
3.6 My beer was bottled 25.11.2013 so it’s almost 10 months old. I think most of the aroma and taste already gone. I think so, cuz it has rather weak aroma, it’s still sweet and a bit fruity but it’s not what I was expected, and what I experienced with other Nogne O beers. It’s hazy, copper color, with big head and great lacing. Taste is also not very intensive. But the bitterness is very pleasant. In overall it’s the worst Nogne I’ve tasted, but still it’s very good.
3.3 26/VII/14 - 50cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck (Vichte) @ Zwommie’s place - BB: 23/XI/15, brewed: 23/XI/13 (2014-845) Little cloudy dark orange beer, creamy yellowish head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: very fruity, honey, sweet, caramel. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet, honey, caramel, sweet again, citrus, hoppy, very malty. Aftertaste: bitter, some honey, caramel, malty, some citrus. Too old I guess. No idea what happened, because this had just hit the shelves about two weeks ago.
3.5 500ml bottle @El Lúpulo Feroz, Oviedo. 12-01-2014. In short: plain IPA. Pours murky dark gold. Some head retention and good lacing. Very fresh citrusy, tangerine-like aromas. Light to medium body, some crispy texture, average carbonation. Taste is very citrusy, orange, and not much else, plain beer, a bit watered-down. Pleasant anyway.
3.1 2014.08 - gents bierfestival - troebel oranje/amber, beige kraag - neus : mout, caramel - mond : bittere aanzet, mout, caramel, terug bitter, licht zurig
3.4 Sample at Gents Bierfestival 2014. THX for sharing today’s beers! APPEARANCE: clear dark blond beer, small unstable off white head. NOSE: grains, bitter, little fruity. TASTE: bitter, hoppy, fruity and florar.
3.9 Sampled @ Gents Bierfestival 2014. Small, spare creamy bubble head, hazy orange brownish amber. Nose is thick bitter raisin with some cookie, caramel, cereal toffee bitterness. Taste is brief toffee, allspice, caramel, cookie leading into strong pine resin bitterness, touch herbal & strong orange peel bitterness. Full touch malty body. Bit empty outside of strong pine resin & orange peel bitterness. Bit one dimensional but not bad for sure.
3.2 Small, rather stable cream head over fully hazy, yeast-laden orangeish brown beer. Yeast, bread, little else... bit salty/mineral. Bitter, hoppy, citrus if not especially mandarines. Still quite some maltpresence, if certainly not sweet. Quite slick, liquid yest. Long, if mild bitter aftertaste. Not so very special. As to mandarines, Kjetil go taste the Alpine beers again...
3.4 Flaske 500 fra Vinmonopolet, Bestillingsutvalget. Mørk gyldenbrun. Uklar. Middels høyt skum med punktlacing. God tung fruktaroma. Smaken er tørket aprikos og blir syrlig bitter etter hvert. Bra - men monoton.
3.5 Amber with off white head - Nice hop aroma with fruits - Nice malts to support a fruity hop profile that goes into a dry citrus flavour - Finishes with dry citrus - This was good
4.0 Slightly hazy, medium amber to orange body with a large, creamy, very long-lived eggnog head that laces the glass excellently and stays finger-thick until the bitter end. Hoppy, rather spicy and strong aroma with lots and lots of overripe tropical fruits and orange with a nice caramel background. Strong flavour of slightly overripe tropical fruits, fainter notes of caramel, and citrus and grass in the long-lasting and crisp finish. Light to moderate sweet and quite heavy bitter taste. Crisp, dry and refreshing mouthfeel with a moderate carbonation that decreases quite rapidly, leaving the carbonation soft. A lovely IPA that is surprisingly fresh even though it was bottled last year. [50 cl bottle, batch 1079, enjoyed 8 months after bottling, from Vinmonopolet Online]
3.3 Bottle. Dark orange body, tall head. Has some floating sediment. Muted aroma with some tropical fruits. Thick sticky mouthfeel. Taste has some fruity hops but it’s not as vibrant as the classic IPA hops are. The bottle is obviously past its prime but what can you do when it showed up on the shelves with already 8 months on it. Where the heck did they keep it that long? I should probably re-rate after a fresher batch becomes available but 1) I doubt it will & 2) with the prices on these Norwegian imports I am not going to bother.
3.6 Bottle. Browny beer with a strong slightly off white head. The aroma is lightly hopped with some degree of bitterness, and the flavour is very well hopped with a very deep amount of bitterness and some yeastiness. Overall a nice strongly hopped and bitter beer.
3.4 500ml bottle from Vinmonopolet. Medium frothy tan head. Dark golden/orange hazy body with a lot of sediments. Aroma is fruity. Grapefruit. Mostly bitter on the tongue. Long lasting bitter aftertaste. Slightly toasted, vinegar, caramel and toffee. Creamy mouthfeel.
4.2 Bottle from Cornelius. Murky ruby body with a thick off-white head. Clumpy yeast floating around (I made a mess of the pour). Steady carbonation. Excellent lacing. Aroma of mandarin, furniture polish, grass, toffee apple and dough. Flavour of grapefruit, passionfruit and caramel sweetness. Medium body with a smooth, oily mouthfeel. Soft fizz. A wonderful, full-flavoured IPA. I must try more from this brewery.
3.3 Bottle from some random Vinmonopol enjoyed at home Dark copper, quite hazy, massive beige head. Smell of mandarin, zest, some spices and aromatic hops. Moderate sweet, juicy, grapefruit flavors and spices. Medium bitter, spicy with resins. Disclaimer : My score reflects that Nøgne Ø launch a beer in the norwegian retail market that is already 6 months old.... which an ipa never should be. The malt base and bitterness is fine, but the aromas are not as good as they probably was loooong ago
4.1 Bottle 50cl. Yellow foamy big head. Quite clear dark orange color. Aroma is hops, apricot, peach and nettles. Taste is mandarin. Not too bitter. Quite powerful with kind of heavy body.
3.7 Bottle. Hazy Orange Amber with a nice White head. Pine floor cleaner and oily citrus zest. Flavour is a nice toss up between the sweet malty base and the pine. A good dose of citrus peel. Overall seems like an interesting hop strain with a very exotic name.
3.5 Bottle from mane liquor. Pours a slightly cloudy orange with off white head. Nose is heavy citrus, with mandarin definitely leading the way. Taste is sweet and citrusy with a bitter finish. Solid ipa.
3.6 Tap at Mikkeller Bangkok on the tap takeover/meet the brewer evening. Poured a hazy medium amber with a round bubbly head and a little broken lace. This is becoming a theme with Nøgne beers these days. The aroma is big mandarin citrus. Did this really ONLY come from the hops? The flavour is moderate sweet, light bitter with a smooth rich citrus hop palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. I’m so glad those hops found their way to Grimstad!
3.6 Bottle at home. Pours hazy amber, malty toffee nose, citrus, taste is juicy citrus, dry toffee.
3.4 Bottle at home. The colour is cloudy dark orange with a medium, light beige head. A little careful aroma with a fruity touch of grapefruit, fruity hops and some pine. The flavour is more pronounced and similar with grassy hops and grapefruit. Has a rich and slick mouth feel, and a medium bitterness. A fruity and nice IPA.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a hazy orange color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty grapefruit hoppy aroma. Fruity malty citrus hoppy bitter flavor. Has a fruity malty citrus hoppy finish.
3.4 Bottle 50 cl. Cloudy orange, white head. Grass and citrus, probably, wait for it, mandarin. Sweet, some malt, and a hoppy bitter finish.
3.5 Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours bright yellow with a white head. Nose is like salt and mandarin. Plenty of citric sweetness with that wet and juicy note. Taste is sweet and juicy citrus zest and tangerine / mandarin. Plenty of saltiness which I like. Solid stuff
3.1 500 ml bottle from Les Vignerons, served in a nonic half pint glass. Dark sunrise orange, pretty hazy, with a nice, creamy and persistent off-white head. Fruity nose but not as intense and fresh as I was hoping, notes of citrus, slightly tropical, some caramel malts presence, little nuttiness, a hint of soap. It doesn’t really get better in the mouth, very malt forward, decent bitterness but not that fruity nor hoppy. Nutty, slightly toasted, perhaps also resinous in the far background. Pleasent floral and earthy aftertaste, but the alchool could have been better hidden. Average carbonation, medium to full body, cramy texture. Had higher expectations about this one, so so.
3.3 Bottle 50cl @Fin mousse. Nose is on agrumes and almond, phenolic. Aroma is very bitter with low fruit notes, on agrumes, mono dimensional, less complex.
