Nøgne Ø / Mikkeller / Brewdog Horizon Tokyo Black

Double batch brewed 29.11.12 batch 894 and 895

On a cold, windy and rainy day in November 2010 we visited BrewDog together with world famous beer merchant Mikkeller. Our plan was to make a beer, which would be close to an interpolation between our individual brews Tokyo, Black and Dark Horizon. This beer should in turn be brewed by us and also for Mikkeller. It was called Black Tokyo Horizon. Unfortunately we have been very busy, but it is now time to make the second celebration of this great collaboration: Please welcome Horizon Tokyo Black!

Ingredients: Water, Maris Otter, Chocolate malt, Roast barley, Peated malt, Amber malt, Black malt, brown malt, Aurora hops, demerara sugar, Flaked oats, yeast.

3.7 23rd October 2017 Bodney Towers Bottleshare. Opaque dark black -brown beer, good dark tan head. Airy palate, mildly dry, modest fine carbonation. The malts are not as rich as you might anticipate but there is spicy licorice. Tangy dark fruits. Little floral orange and mild marmalade and even a trace of strawberry. Smooth finish. Unusual and tasty.
3.9 Bottle picked up from somewhere, possibly the Brewdog online shop but quite a few years ago. Consumed this at home with Dad, Sunday 24th December 2017 just after eating homemade Tonka Bean Ice Cream and Eccles Cake Ice Cream. I think that is my 11,000 beer, purely by chance hadn't realised I'd hit that total.Pours black, oily black, if there was a head then it was sucked into the oily shark eye blackness immediately. Oily textured (oil is my favourite word here), it's got some sweetness but it's also got a lot of roasty flavours, ash, burnt nuts, bitter chocolate some bitter treacle. I like it, it drinks far, far, easier than 16%. Very good, maybe perhaps not quite as good as I'd hoped but very good nonetheless. A8 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.9
4.3 0.25l bottle shared at Harry’s Jyväskylä. Bottled 11/2012. Pours black color. Aroma of chocolate, sweetness, cocoa, oak, slightly roasted malts, coffee, licorice. Strong taste, alcoholy, bitter and roasted with sweetness, thick body. Balanced and strong Imperial Stout, just well crafted with a lot of taste.
4.2 Intense dark chocolate, cacao, dark, moist pralines, oak, peat, burnt malts, salty, rotting blue cheese. Hazy, very, dark brown, tiny, creamy, beige head. Heavy sweet. More sweet, rich dark chocolate, cacao, oak, peat, burnt, toasted bread, soft carbonation, full bodied. Outstanding Impy, rich and intense, massively complex. Bottle shared at Leighton's - thanks to madmitch76!
3.9 Bottle shared at Bodney Road, 23/10/2017. Huge thanks to Kenny for this one. A oily black / mahogany brown coloured pour with a beige head. Aroma is soy, play dough, alcohol, liquorice. Flavour is composed of big bitter black malts, cake, burnt, jammy fruits, lingering ashy, sweet sticky . Palate is sweet and sticky, moderate carbonation, little airy. Lasting lingering black malts, liquorice.
4.0 Bottle from SED. Brownish black with a thin tan head. Aroma is licorice malt. Flavour is full sweet boozy malt, warm berries, chocolate, coating coffee, warm booze finish.
4.1 Bottle shared in Hackney - big thanks to Kenny. Pours black-brown with a small, creamy tan head. The nose smacks of alcohol, cocoa, ash, dark fruits. Medium sweet flavour with some burnt honey, rich chocolate, peat, raisins. Medium to full bodied, lightly oily, with fine carbonation. Warm to hot finish, with light oxidation, a little more ash, fudge, booze, bak Big cocoa. Great stuff overall. Punchy but so much fun.
4.0 The Black tasting hosted by Kraddel 17/10/2017. Brewed 2012, Sold 2013. Aroma is licorice sourness, hint of roast. Taste is roasted, moldy oak, a tad cardboard which lowers the rating. Some sourness, whiff licorice. Still fizzy. Palate is a tad too thin for a 16% ABV
4.3 Black, no head. Aroma: malty, caramel, toasty, red fruits, chocolate, alcohol, dry fruits, nuts, toast. Full body, heavy cloying sweetness, dense, oily texture. Nice esters in flavour. Alcohol noticable, but in acceptable level.
4.0 Kolor: Czarny, nieprzejrzyste. Piana: Brązowa, sycząca, szybko redukuje się do zera. Zapach: Czekolada, nutki ogniskowe, palone, sos sojowy. Pachnie bardzo przyjemnie. Smak: Dość słodkie, cierpkawe od ciemnych słodów. Gorzka czekolada, sos sojowy, orzech włoski, syrop na kaszel. Niezbyt wysoka, czekoladowa w odczuciu goryczka. Przyjemne alkoholowe rozgrzewanie na finiszu. Wysycenie: Średnie, za wysokie. Opakowanie: Kartonik ,firmowy kapsel, prosta etykieta z niedokładnym składem. Uwagi: Warka 29.11.27 Bardzo przyjemne, złożone
4.0 URUS 3.0 Aroma: chocolate, soy sauce, coffee, prunes, roasty, caramel Taste: heavy sweet, moderate bitter, chocolate, cofee, soy sauce, prunes, caramel
3.8 Bottle. Black. Thin fizzy tan head that fades quickly. Glassy. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, raisin. The taste is roasted malt, raisin, chocolate, vanilla, buckwheat, booze. Medium-full bodied, nearly still, boozy. Not overly hot for the ABV. Solid.
4.0 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer. Bardzo intensywny sos sojowy, likier czekoladowy. Słodkie, bardzo smaczne.
4.0 Bottle, september 23rd 2016. Black body with a small brown head. aroma is roasty with licorice, dark fruits, mild chocolate. Strong bittersweet chocolate and coffee taste with dark malt, mild alcohol notes. Roasty warm finish. Excellent.
4.0 Sweet little 8.5oz bottle in a metal tube, I picked up in Japan. Pours out pitch black topped with a brown ring of a head. Nose is rich roast malts chocolate coffee some pit fruit maybe aswell. Taste is thick rich wow chocolate roast coffee ash tray. Very fun to try.
4.0 Smells like cauliflower (maybe it was the sun or god knows what). Great thick texture with pleasant alcohol. Some roast, bitterness coffee, choclate and red fruity aftertaste. Classic and yet artistic.
4.2 The smell of this beer is already insane. Caramel, roast, strong malts ascend shone yeast. The first sip feels like drinking oil, full bodied and syrupy. Raisins, roast, caramel, licorice, coffee, dark chocolate, red fruits, brown sugar. Although quite sweet this is countered by a crisp bitterness. Somewhere in there is 16% of alcohol which is well hidden. Once you get used to the initial punch in the face it is also a balanced beer. this is a monster of a brew but definitely not out of control.
4.1 15-03-17 // bottle shared at home. Pours a deep black beer, no head, white lacing at the edges. Intense nose of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, alcohol. Taste is surprisingly "light" considering the very high ABV, very well hidden only in the end there are some alcoholic notes. Loads of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malts, sweet. Oily texture, warming finish. Great.
3.8 Pours black, opaque. Dark beige foam, quickly reudces to the ring. Aroma of cholcolate, roasted malts, espresso, smoke, peaty notes, vanilla, alcohol, whiskey. Taste is similar to the aroma, dark chocolate, coffe, sugary, bitterness and alcohol, a little oily-like texture. Finish heavy bitter, full body, very soft carbonation.
4.1 25 cl bottle @ home. Bought in Copenhagen during our honeymoon, 3.5 years ago. Batch# 894/895, brewed 29.11.12 (4.5 years ago). Pitch black color. Brown head. Aroma’s: sweet, black strap molasses, red fruit, alcohol. Retronasal it’s sweet, drop/licorice, some soy sauce, red fruit, chocolate. Flavor is moderate to full sweet, dark malts, light roasty, molasses. Pretty strong alcohol feel. Medium to full bodied. Finishes sweet, ryebread, roasty. I remember it was crazy expensive, but fortunately it held up well and is pretty awesome.

3.9 250 ml bottle shared by Geiserich, thanks! Black body, with almost no head. Aroma of melting dark chocolate, smoke, coffee, liquorice, cocoa, barrel, some dark fruits. Tastes quite similar, with more booze. Medium, oily mouthfeel, with a soft carbonation. Finishes Roastbeef, medium dry, with coffee, cocoa, liquorice, subtle dark fruits. Very nice. Not too heavy for the ABV, quite smooth. Well balanced, with diverse, dark roasty notes. Not among my favourite style examples, but a lovely sipper.
3.3 0,25l bottle at Linz Tasting shared by Geiserich, big thanks. Brewed 29.11.2012. BB 11/2017. black color, small coffee colored head. smells bitter herbal, earthy, bit milky, some alcohol, licorice, some chocolate. ok smell, bit alcoholic. full body, light carbonation, rather oily mouthfeel. tastes of alcohol, bitter herbal, warming, spices, peppery, chocolate, licorice. finishes rather alcoholic warming with notes of spices, chocolate and licorice. decent but rather boozy stuff. thanks for sharing. quite heavy. Rerate, 21.07.2019: Taster courtesy of Sander. black color, very small very dark coffee colored head. smells soy sauce, earthy, molasses, booze, smoky, nice smell. full body, no carbonation. tastes of soy sauce, molasses, some smoke notes, peppery, spices, some sweetness, booze. finishes medium sweet with notes of soy sauce, molasses and some smokey notes. heavy on the soy sauce, still boozy, this coule be maybe a 3.5 but not much more. I guess Imp Stouts evolved quite a bit.
4.2 0,25l bottle shared with wiosna @ Pikkulintu. Pours very dark brown with a low tan head. Aroma is slightly grainy roasted malts with alcohol. Flavor is sweet roasted malts, burnt caramel, chocolate, alcohol and hops. Exquisite.
4.6 Ultra noire. Nez intense de chocolat et de liqueur de café. Corps intense et liquoreux. Chaleur d'alcool très sucré. Bonne amertume. Torréfié. Liqueur de café. Un peu fruité. Vanillé. Caramel. Chocolat fourré. Truffe. Légère touche de fumé. Un gros dessert.
4.3 Aroma: Medium/heavy aroma of malts, caramel, dark fruit, chocolate, molasses, mocha, bread, roasted malts and coffee. Appearance: Opaque black beer with a slight dark brown head. Taste/Palate: Starts heavy sweet with malts, caramel, dark fruit, chocolate, molasses and mocha; ends slightly bitter and dry with bread, roasted malts and coffee. Overall: This beer is intense, complex and balanced. Insanely sweet flavour at the start with loads of dark fruit and chocolate. Not overly sweet, especially if you do not take too much at once. Had a four year old bottle, so the roasted malts probably are more dominant. Could have been thicker, but the flavour is great.
3.3 Bottle. Walnut cream, port wine, lots of dark fruit - plums, cherries, blackberries - dark chocolate coated wafers, espresso, tobacco and subtle pumpernikel. Lovely aroma. Lots of alcohol in the taste. Boozy, maybe not really thrown out of balance but still the alcohol makes its way through the body, essentially destroying any sense of fullness and flavour depth. The flavour disappoints, as it is essentially flattened down and simplified, a mere shadow of the aroma. Merely a good beer, while I was hoping for much more.
