Nøgne Ø Red Horizon 2. edition

Nøgne Ø Red Horizon 2. edition

We brewed this ale with the famous sake yeast No 7 from Masumi Sake in Nagano, Japan. On advise from Masumi’s master brewers, we fermented this ale very slowly at low temperatures to bring out No 7’s fabulously fruity character. This product is unfiltered and unpasteurized. Please enjoy chilled! Special thanks to Masumi!

4.1 Bottle in Tin can, tasted almost three years ago. Very intense and oily beer.
4.1 How : bottle Appearance : almost clear deep red with a small off-white head. Aroma : cherries, grapes, beets, nuts, caramel, vanilla and madeira. Palate : full body, soft carbonation.
3.4 Bottle. It pours hazy amber with a small off white head. The aroma is very sweet and spicy. Loads of malty notes and some hops. Honey like sweetness in the flavor and lots of spicy notes. Sweet and light smoked finish. Fruity and bit chalky.
3.7 bottle at home - teku glass, side by side 2. and 3. 2.: Pours clear dark amberish orange, no head. Aroma of aged hops and some smoke. Nice sweet body, some herbal bitters, some sake in the finish, with sweet bready malts. 3.: cloudier, darker. nose is more malt. Body and taste are likewise. Too bad they are over their point.
3.8 Old rating rerated 08.01.2016, 0,25l bottle @ Nama: Tiny shortlasting head, nice golden amber color. Aroma is slightly rich and sweet - nice oxidized, raisins, dark sugar, minerals, caramel malts, nuts, candied sugar, hay, alcohol, burnt caramel. Taste is slightly sweet and burnt, dark sugar, raisins, burnt caramel, peat, ashes, leather, alcohol, minerals, grass, yeast, weeds. Medium bitterness, slightly dry boozy mouthfeel. Nice, but I think it used to be better before, and very different from what it has aged to become...
3.9 Bottle. Dark red copper color. Strong vinous aroma of red fruit, cherry and grape, like a port wine. Taste of dry grain, rice, ripe red fruit, red grape, booze, sake yeast and with a warming boozy finish. Quite special and nice.
4.3 Bottle shared with JMD at HNB 01.12.15. Clear, reddish amber. Small beige head. Vinous aroma of old sherry, old white port, sauternes, dried apricot and other dried fruits. Similarly complex taste, balanced with sweetness of dried fruits. Superb!
4.4 Hazy, dark orange color with a bit of beige head. Aroma is intense and complex. Dried dates and figs, caramel, pumpkin pie spices, cognac. Taste starts sweet with the dark fruits and brown sugar and gets more balanced, even a bit bitter, in the finish. You can get the high ABV but not pungent or disturbing in any way. Leaves the mouth quite dry, without any alcohol burn. Body feels quite thick but not syrupy or sticky in any way. Has some carbonation, making it dangerously drinkable for 13.5%. I am quite impressed with this one. Really complex, with many layers of flavors ranging from intense, fruity sweetness to a nice, nutty bitterness in the aftertaste.
4.0 Aroma of fruits, caramel, malt, brown sugar, nuts, dried fruits, biscuits, and a hint of honey. Amber with a tan head. Medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter. Full body with a soft carbonation. Overall this is a brilliant brew, nicely balanced and rich flavour. Very impressive. .
3.6 Bottle at home. Clear amber pour, thin white head. Aroma of ripe fruits, toffee, sugars, slightly dusty, rice, some alcohol and caramel. Flavor is very sweet, sugary malts, some alcoholic warmth and a bit dry in the finish. Strange side flavors, but an interesting brew.
3.7 Bottle as "Red Horizon 2. edition", 13.5%. Unclear amber/brown with tiny head. Aroma is malt, fruit, dark fruit, yeast, toasted, caramel and ripe fruit. Flavour is malt, sweet, ripe fruit, dark fruit, oak, toasted, warming, thick with notes of alcohol.
3.8 September 10, 2015. Bottle at home, brewed december 20, 2011. Clear reddish amber with a small dense, quickly dissipating off-white head. Aroma is sweet with toffee, dried fruits, sugar, orange, red berries, some licorice and a bit vinous. Taste is sweet with a very light bitterness, finish is sweet, hints of licorice, light bitter with a woody roasted note and vinous. Medium to full bodied, oily texture, almost flat.
3.8 Bottled. Pours hazy, deep golden with a little, lacing off-white head. Aroma of sake, caramel, yeast and spicy notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry with some alcohol. Medium to full bodied, oily to creamy texure and soft carbonation. An excellent Ale. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
3.3 Port-like color. Hazy brown, hints of red. Aromas of apple-brandy. Prominent alcohol..a bit like a meeting point between sake and port. Starts sweet, raisin like. Long bitter aftertaste, but not sharp. Pine of Juniper finish. Tasted with cheese platter. Excellent with strong Camembert, blue cheese, and taleggio.
3.9 Dunkel mørk rød farve med lyst skum. Lukt av bær, frukt og lakris. Smak av karamell, bær, frukt og lakris.
3.3 Bottle. Reddish brown color. Red fruit in the vinous aroma. Malty sweet alcoholic flavor. Indeed sake-like, with dried red fruit. Sherry notes. Very low on carbon. Interesting beer.
3.2 Near clear red brown nuttish body with disappeared fawn bubbles. Aroma of leafy hops, resin juice, bitter caramel. Tastes birch bark, resin, brown caramel, brown hops and a sunset. Solid body, strong juicy stuff. Juicy finish. [thanks to lmojoh for sharing, 25cl bottle in a tube]
3.9 25cl bottle, brewed 11/2011, bb12/2016, odd-one-out contribution by bastarda @Outre-Rhin tasting 05/2015, danke. Soggy oddbrown pour. Aroma is an instant under-the-radar education to unsuspecting nostrils: damp wild rice, umami-meaty, smoked trout and algae, contoured by a stonefruity sweetness of old date and fig jam. More umami yeast textures in taste: grilled shiitake mushrooms, both rice-powered sake and vinous plum wine blending in, creating a meaty mouthfeel like charcuterie, woodcured ham/Schwarzwaldschinken and wheat-derived fig puree. Manages to remain dry and smooth despite all that. Quite a composition.
3.3 Freiburg testing - courtesy of Bastarda, many thanks Almuth. Couleur rouge brune trouble, mousse qui disparait. Nez fort fruits rouges, caramel, alcool, fermenté (le saké?). Gout assez complexe, levuré, fruist rouges, salé, note de viande froide, jambon sec, umami. Bon corps. Bière très particulière, mais a essayer.
4.5 sublte sweetish nose of plumwine and tealike herbs with a hint of oak; tastes drier than to be expected by the aromas, shiitake mushrooms and earthy/woody and even salty notes balancing white grapes, caramel, plums and some forest strawberries. Complex. Landscapelike.
3.7 Bottle 25cl from Bastarda thanks. A cloudy amber beer, nose is on fig and quetsches. Aroma is on ripped fruits, mushrooms, sweet, licorice wood, flour notes, very complex, unusual, light wet rice notes, salted.
4.2 Pyryn luona 5/2015. I enjoyed this more than the first edition, this was more complex and not too alcoholic.
3.5 Dark hazy red with white head. Aroma is candy, red berries, licorice and fruity. Sticky palate. Aftertaste is candy, malt, caramel, licorice, dry and some floral notes. Overall: well hidden abv. Interesting brew, but nothing special. Lacks complexity.
3.9 Batch # 741, bottle # 10942, brewed at December 2011, bbe at December 2016, over 3 years old but still years to expiry date. Slightly red, dark brown beer, almost without head. Aroma is rich, strongly fruity with notes of dried and fresh fruits, plums, honeydew, some red and sweet berries, raisins, strong sweetness but not too much. Taste has concentrated fruits and berries, honeydew, herbal bitterness is drying the taste. Strong sweetness but that’s in the fruity form, thus it’s not too much. Alcohol can’t be tasted but it’s there. Full bodied, slippery, only slightly sticky in the mouth. Unique, honeydew fruitness from sake yeast is also in this edition. Charming.
3.6 Testad på Linköping Beer Expo. Grumlig.
3.8 Bottle. Color cloudy brown with a small head. Aroma malt, caramel, toffee. Taste sweet, caramel, malt, toffee.
3.6 25cl bottle at home brewed in 2011. Poured a deep amber colour with a small non to long lasting creamy head. Very sweet aroma, burned caramel, yeast, fruity aroma of ripe apples, plums, red fruit, cherry, some fruity smell in the aroma i can’t place (should be from the sake yeast...) some kind of spiced medical tea herbs, coriander. Leaving a long sweet finish. Very smooth and Silky mouthfeel. But i can say i’m a huge fan of the herbal / fruit notes that are coming from the sake yeast.
4.6 Kolor: jasno brązowy z lekkim zmętnieniem. Piana: jasno beżowa, drobnopęcherzykowa, niezbyt obfita i szybko znikająca co przy tej zawartości alkoholu jest jak najbardziej normalne. Zapach: głownie likier chmielowy, w tle nuty owocowe, melanoidynowe. Alkohol wyczuwalny, ale w szlachetnej formie bez żadnych nut spirytusowych. Smak: solidna baza słodowa z aromatami karmelu, melanoidyn. Słodycz skontrowana goryczką. Na finiszu wychodzi chmielowa gorycz i nutami alkoholu. Wysycenie: średnie jak najbardziej pasujące.
3.9 Pours a deep ruby red with a pinkishly brown head which does not last long. Aroma is toffee, caramel, lychee and slight cherry drops. Taste is caramel, toffee, buttescotch, slight cherry and malty sweetness. Long and dry slightly raisiny finish.
