(Rating #7014)
3.0My Bottom Line:
Heavy but lax caramel meets with bitter hop resins, as simple profile neatly boxed in cardboard.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the cloudy amber.
-This was within the 5-year best before date and still was plenty oxidized. Rather surprising for such a sugar-laden high alcohol brew.
-The finish adds a dash of brown sugar.
-Carbonation is rather soft, making the body feel even heavier.
Bottle.
3.8(Nøgne Ø Red Horizon 3. edition) Bottle 250 ml at home, from a trade with Cuso, thanks! Served into a snifter at home and tasted side to side with the 2nd edition, ABV 12.5%
Deep red coloured body, slightly hazy, with a small and thin taan head, okay retention.
Aroma of red and dark fruits, light caramel, cheese, sugars.
Taste has caramel, dark fruits, red fruits, alcohol, light vanilla, light vinous notes.
Medium body, good carbonation, sticky on the palate.
Pretty good.
3.7Very similar to 2nd edition. A bit of a burnt coffee bean note with a brighter and more well rounded fruit profile. Caramel, heavy toffee and jammy bread notes. Interesting profile. 2 or 3 years aged.
3.6Random encounter. Sweet, bitter and caffeinated. Reddish fruit and plumeish playback.0
4.1Bottle in Tin can, tasted almost three years ago. Very intense and oily beer.
3.5bottle at home - teku glass, side by side 2. and 3.
2.: Pours clear dark amberish orange, no head. Aroma of aged hops and some smoke. Nice sweet body, some herbal bitters, some sake in the finish, with sweet bready malts.
3.: cloudier, darker. nose is more malt. Body and taste are likewise.
Too bad they are over their point.
4.2the aroma is very bright, fruity and caramel with notes of vanilla, toffee, licorice, berries and some spices... the taste is fruity, caramel and, a little bit, smoked with notes of port, toffee, dried banana, raisin and spices... sweet, dry and warming aftertaste...
4.1Aroma of malt, fruits, licorice, dried fruits and hints of honey and spices. Amber with a tan head. Medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter. Full body with a soft carbonation. Overall an interesting and enjoyable brew.
Gutes Piwo.
3.9Bottle from a trade with Meilby - many thanks! The beer has got a hazy dark brown colour with a smooth body and smooth head. Aroma of prunes, roasted barley and malt. Taste of barley, roast, torf, prunes, plums and oak. Hints of sherry and rum. Great beer.
3.1Bottle sample at a tasting at Naama’s place. Thanks Naama. Orange. Aroma is malty, fruity, a bit spicy, with caramel, a bit of alcohol. Sweet flavor, kinda boozy, with malt, caramel, toasty note, fruitiness, spicy note, bitter stale hops. Rounded mouthfeel, slick but boozy.
3.5Not as over the top sweet or as alcoholic as verison 1, so I like it better. Still a very strong sipper, but approachable. Fruity with clean yeast.
4.2Muddy dark orange, brownish color with almost no head, just a bit of lacing. Dried dark fruits and spices in the aroma: dates, figs, nutmeg and ginger come to mind. Taste starts sweet and spicy but gets more balanced towards the finish. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and roasty with a nutty character. Body feels thick but has a bit of carbonation to make it easier to drink. Had it right after the 2nd Edition. This one is a bit more balanced overall but also has a slightly weaker aroma and the alcohol, although being 1% less, is more noticeable. But overall it’s still a great, complex brew.
3.6Bottle shared thanks to richthevillan, cheers Rich. Slightly hazy copper beer with residual head. Aroma is sweet fruit liquor and spice. Taste is spice, stewed orchard fruit and boozy. Good.
3.7Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; hazy deep copper pour with a thin beige head, aroma has orange plus some sweet caramel, taste has sweet toffee, some stewed fruit, very sweet but tasty.
3.6Bottle. dark amber color. Plum, red berries and rice in the vinous aroma. Malty sweet vinous flavor with red berries, rice, plums, citrus. A good balance in spite of the sweetness. hardly any carbon. Warming alcohol. Lovely.
3.8Bottled. Pours hazy, deep golden with a little, off-white head. Aroma of wood, caramel, yeast and spicy notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry with bitter notes. Medium to full bodied, creamy texure and soft to flat carbonation. A very nice Barley. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
3.40,25l bottle. Metal tube. 3rd ed. Deep caramel colour. No head. Murky. Smells pruny, porty, and of caramel. Hits the tongue with the heavy ABV, but in a pleasant way. Flavour like the Ringnes Polaris and the Danish Anniversary beer. Warming, pruny. It’s been to long since I’ve had sake, but it does ring a bell. Overall an interesting beer, but just as a once in a while alternative.
3.8Bottle @ Bierhof, Athens. Color clear very dark orange with tiny head. Aroma malt, toffee, fruits. Taste very sweet, malt, caramel, fruits.
3.5June 8, 2015. Bottle at home, brewed december 20, 2011.
Murky red with with a small fizzy and frothy off-white head. Aroma is sweet toffee, boiled rice, red berries, figs, peach, some spicy notes and burnt sugar. Taste is very sweet toffee, dried fruits, berries, peach, some spicy notes leading to a warming finish with a soft, burnt sugar bitterness. Medium to full bodied, oily texture, soft, almost flat carbonation.
3.5Look; hazy shade of red brown, shy hue vanished, poor lacing. Aroma; soya, sour berries, pickles, brown malts and juicy yeast. Taste; powerful juicy caramel sauce with a broad bowl of fruits, passion fruit, oily resin. Feel; semidry power. Overall; powersipper.

3.8250ml bottle brought back from Japan. Pours out a dark golden topped with a small white head. Nose is floral notes sweetness and some booze. Taste is more of the sweetness earth tones and some more of the floral notes.
3.7cherries, caramel, citruses, dried fruits, little woody, some alcohol; dark amber/ruby color, clear, just a ring of foam; high bitterness, medium+ sweetness; full body, thick alcoholic feel, soft carbonation, long warming bitter finish;
Overall: great taste, very good aroma, mighty
3.8Surprisingly fruity aroma in an amber-copper pour. Flavour of fortified wine - with a twist of barley and sake. Interesting complexity to finish a tasting session.
4.325cl bottle at home. Hazy amber / orange with a medium slightly off-white head. Full body with light to moderate carbonation. Nice sweetness with some bitter tones. Ripe fruits, caramel, malts, spices, herbs, yeast and citrus. A very tasty complex brew.
4.00,25 l bottle. Don’t really remember where did I get it, probably from Dogenzaka Shinanoya, a while ago. Pours hazy reddish copper, thin foam film that is completely gone in seconds. Aroma is rich, opulent, full of sweet caramel, fig fruits, sticky dates. Somehow appetising though, filling nostrils with satisfaction. Taste is also full, has fruits, dates, some sugary marmalade - but also dry hoppiness that succumbs into quite straightforward oak. Like chewing wood. Aftertaste is oak, mixed with some "old" sweetness. Quite kick-ass beer I would say, very different but immensely enjoyable.
Dalej melanoidyny z wyczuwalnymi nutami amerykańskich chmieli. Alkohol po zamieszaniu niestety wyczuwalny w niezbyt przyjemny sposób.
Smak: również głównie ciemne owoce z nutami karmelu, przypieczonej bułki maślanej. Słodowa podbudowa skontrowana goryczką o chmielowym charakterze spotęgowaną przez alkohol.
Wysycenie: średnie jak najbardziej pasujące.
3.4Bottle 25cl. Small white layer leaving. A bit hazy cognac color. Aroma is oak, sugar, yeast, caramel. Taste is very sweet of strong toffee liqeur.
