Nøgne Ø Underlig Jul

Nøgne Ø Underlig Jul

The name of this beer is "Peculiar Christmas" in English. This spiced Christmas ale is strange - and indeed a fusion beer. We have gathered inspiration from the Norwegian drink “gløgg”, and as such this is quite an uncompromising brew. Best served with “goro” and “fattigmann”. Recommended serving temperature 10°C/50°F, but you are free to try on higher temperatures...

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, caramel, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Cascade hops; 5 different spices, English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

15°P, 30 IBU, 6.5 ABV.

3.4 Bottle (as "Peculiar Yule") from Louisville Beer Store; shared with my Boo. Aroma: Reminds me of Chai- lots of spices, particularly cardamon and clove with molasses. Appearance: Dark chestnut brown pour with a tan cap that settles into a wispy head. Flavor: Pretty much matches the nose; spice intensive throughout- like drinking a Chai and eating a Christmas spiced cookie; the finish is mostly dry. Palate: Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: Certainly odd, but it grows on you. Better as it warms, and a nice choice to have with Christmas cookies.
3.6 AROMAT: Przyprawy korzenne (głównie imbir z kardamonem).
4.6 Bottle. Pours opaque dark coffee brown with medium brown head. Aroma is prunes, dried ginger, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, port wine, orange peel and brown sugar (exactly the same ingredients as go into my homemade "gløgg" extract). Taste is medium sweet, light to medium bitter, light acidic, light umami and faint salty. Body is oily to syrupy with soft carbonation. Finish is long, rich and complex with notes of "gløgg", gravy, coffee, Christmas cookies, Christmas pudding, raw licorice and all the spices mentioned above. Definitely "peculiar" and definitely "Christmas". Thumbs up for brewing something different!
3.5 Dark brown, clear, looks like coca-cola. The aroma reminds me of coca-cola too. There are plenty of christmas spices in the taste and dry maltiness in the background. Medium carbonation, medium body. Not outright bad, but not particularly enjoyable either.
Trevlig, men speciell!
3.2 Dark nutty brown appearance with some head. Tastes of gløgg, cinnamon and Christmas seasonings. Medium, dry body, a bit aggressive carbonation, and a gløggy finish. A bit too dry and seasony
3.6 Dark brown colour, large coffee cream coloured head. Mostly cloves with cinnamon and ginger along with gingerbread doughy in parts. Little bit of sweetness there, some plums, prunes, raisins and chocolate malt in the flavour but quite a dry beer. Spices are not as overpowering as they were in the aroma.
3.9 Dark amber in color, Has a strong, in your face, spiced aroma. Has ginger, nutmeg cinnamon, and cloves for flavor. You can definitely tell that this is a Christmas Beer. Pure Deliciousness
3.4 500ml bottle from Systembolaget. Deep dark amber, creamy tan head. Aroma; ginger, gluhwein, pepsi cola, herbs, cinnamon, spices. Medium body, pleasant carbonated. Taste: ginger, cinnamon, bun, herbs, cough medecine, dark syrup. Easy to drink but still tasty.
3.8 500 ml bottle from the LCBO. Appearance: Pours a dense ruby brown with over a finger of beige head. Short retention with decent lacing. Aroma: Coriander, cloves and other spices Flavours: Ginger, cloves, nutmeg and a boatload of other baking spices, dates and black currents. Mouthfeel: Thick and rich with lots of carbonation. Overall: Super intense spice aroma I could pick up from across the room soon as the bottle opened. This reminds me of Flying Monkeys Ginger Bread beer but much stronger in flavour. It is almost to the point of over powering.
4.6 Bottle from bottle park. Aroma hits you with spice up front. Badyan, cinammon, ginger maybe. Tempting. Almost clear dark brown colour. Taste surprises by rich caramel malt profile supporting the spices in just right amount. Strong spice, moderate to strong malty and even hops flavour pokes out a bit, with a decent bitterness that supports all of above. Wonderfully complex beer packed with flavour. Spicy, nutty, toffee, biscuity, grassy hops, it is all in there. Masterpiece. Easily drinkable at its relatively modest ABV.
3.7 500ml bottle. Clear amber-copper body, medium yellow head, poor retention. Aroma of spruce and ginger, cloves, coriander, caramel malt, raisins. Taste is surprisingly bold: ginger, coriander, pine needles, cloves, plums. Mineral aftertaste. Very interesting.
4.0 the aroma of spices - clove, coriander and nutmeg, also of caramel and toffee... the taste is caramel and spicy with some shades of licorice, toffee and pine cones... dry, sweet and bitter spicy aftertaste...
3.3 Bottle 50 cl. Dark brown, off-white. Spicy, pine, cloves and coriander. Medium sweet and bitter. Complex Christmas.
Tuntumaltaan olut on melko täyteläinen.
3.0 Kolor - brązowo-rubinowy, klarowny. Piana - beżowa, średnio wysoka, średnio trwała. Zapach - słodkie. Smak - słodko-ziołowo-owocowo-kolendrowe, wyraźnie słodkie, średnia goryczka. Esencjonalne, smaczne.
3.8 Bottle at home. Pours deep brown, nose is smoked, spicy, cake, taste is malty, fruity.
4.1 500ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a hazy muddy water looking colour with a huge 4 finger of head. Head remains all tge way through and lacing clings to the side of the glass. Aroma of ginger and some cinnamon. Spiciness of ginger is pronounces and balanced with a hoppy flavour. Extremely high carbonation level.
3.6 Cherry cola color, brown with ruby highlights, and medium off-white head that reduces but leaves attractive lacing. Smells like the holidays, with plenty of dried fruit and spices, I’m surprised there were no actual cherries . The taste doesn’t quite live up to that, with a little too much cardamom and cloves, and a slight sourness that doesn’t build on anything else. In compensation, the carbonation is bright without going overboard, and it offers a smooth mouthfeel.
2.5 På flaska från systemet. Mörk brun färg. Doftar karamell Söt med apelsinskal i smaken.
3.7 Bottle - 500ml. Pours a cloudy, dark brown body with a thick, lasting off-white foamy head. Robust malty/hoppy aroma with spicy and cinnamon hints. Its strong malty/hoppy taste carries oaky, cinnamon, plummy, and spicy notes. Ends with a long, warming bittersweet finish. Very good Christmas ale.
3.4 50cl 2013 bottle. Dark brown to red-brown with two finger tan white head. Aroma of Christmas spices, cardamon, cloves, raisins and sweet brown bread (vörtbröd). Fairly lively carbonation but smooth mouthfeel apart from that. Tastes of sweet brown bread (vörtbröd), some dried fruits etc. with some bitterness at the end. Age already somewhat noticeable, this will probably keep improving for another while in my amateur oppinion. Doesn’t quite taste as good as it smells, or as the 2014 version did on tap, but still quite good.
4.4 How: Bottle. Appearance: Dark brown, beige head. Lots of christmas spices, dried fruits, some cocoa. Smooth herbal aftertaste.
3.6 Pours opaque and a massive white head. Aroma includes notes cinnamon, allspice, cloves, vegetables. Tasting notes include spice, herbs, vegetables, and rich malts. This is a very heavy, complex beer. It is enjoyable, but definitely a sipper.
3.1 Bottle from Den Nordiske Ølhandel, Copenhagen - fuzzy brown pour with off-white head. Aroma and taste is sweet light malty, with loads of herbal and spicy nuances throughout, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, pretty watery consistency. Ok but not a show stopper for me.
3.4 A lot of spices, cinnamon dominates. Ginger, cloves. festively. Good Christmas beer!
3.2 Very unique scent. Fruity and lots of spice. Tons of Clove and other spices. Very unique. A bit over the top and unbalanced.
