4.1 Wow - her er en øl der vil noget. Spændende smag. Jeg tror den bliver endnu bedre når den har ligget et par år. For høj alkohol pct
3.8 2005 bottle, 14C. Deep brown with an off-white head at the rim. Aroma of stewed fruits, licorice, toffee, sherry, orange peel, marzipan. Not quite still. Full bodied but just short of sticky. Very smooth. Dark fruits and sugars, some orange peel and licorice - maybe some other sweet shop spices too. Slightly boozy with a nice little bitter kick at the end. Presumably some lushness has been and gone, but there’s no cardboard and the finish is very lovely.
3.8 How: Bottle. Appearance: Dark brown, minimal head. Aroma: Dark fruits, nuts, vanilla. Palate: Medium body, low carbonation.
3.9 Bottle I’ve had almost as long as I’ve been in this hobby. 2006 vintage, and there’s no telling where I got it. Pours a somewhat cloudy reddish amber with a small off-white ring for a head. Lots of big sweet malty notes in here - cookie, cake, brown sugar, caramel, dried plums and figs, mellow spice, and a bit of earthiness. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sweet, dry mouthfeel. Has aged incredibly well for something that would’ve had its 9th birthday this year. I was shocked, really, by how good it is after all this time.
3.5 Labeled 12%. 20.3oz bottle, 2006 vintage. Hazy dark red brown color. Fine darker particles in the body. Minimal ring of bubbly khaki head. In the nose, lots of dark fruit, caramel malt, toasty, and some nice heat in the nostril noticeable. In the flavor, some fruity notes like fig, less vinous than expected. Tasty milk chocolate aromas, nice hazelnuttiness. Moderate sweet taste, but not cloyingly so at all. Better taste than expected. Very light warmth, mild bitter. Lightly slick. Bigger body. Light carbonation. Interesting tasty stuff. ABV works well. Extra point for being so smooth for the ABV.
3.6 Written review from Copenhagen Beerfest. Pours a dark, murky brown in the body with a thin head only a few bubble thick in a light beige colour. The aroma has rich toasted malts, nuts, toffee, caramel and leathery notes. A bunch of dried fruity flavours upfront with vanilla and licorice flavours. Sweet caramel malts and cereal flavours work well with raisin and prune notes. The finish is heavy and hot with alcohol presence. The aftertaste is a bit spiced and bitter with mild hop flavour and astringency. An unusual barley wine.
3.7 660ml Bottle - The front label says it’s 2008 whilst the back label says 2009. Perhaps the brewery worker responsible for labelling had drunk a few of these before working! Dark brown in colour. Leather, dried fruit and aniseed in the aroma. Fruity and slightly sweet taste with notes of raisins, caramel, marzipan and a faint hint of cinnamon. The finish is fruity and slightly sweet and earthy. Overall a tasty barley wine, but I was hoping for a little bit more from this one. Would be interesting to compare it to a ’fresher’ version.
4.3 Bottle - 600ml (2008). Pours an opaque brown body with a thin off-white foamy head. Fantastic malty/hoppy aroma with dried fruits, caramel, vanilla, and brandy hints. Alcohol is not too agressive. Texture is thick, oily. Its robust malty taste carries hoppy, oaky, brandy, spicy, and brown sugar notes. Ends with a long, warming bittersweet finish. Awesome winter warmer!
3.3 60 cl bottle @ home (2008 vintage). Pours brownish amber with a lot of sediment and an off-white head that leaves very little lacing. Aroma and flavour are caramel, dried fruits, spices, and alcohol - with a sweet finish.
3.6 (600ml bottle from 2010) Pours a very murky reddish brown with basically no head at all. Aroma quite sweet, a bit vinous: dark stewed fruit, caramelized brown sugar, lightly roasted, dark rye bread. Flavour extremely sweet, again caramelized brown sugar, stewed plums, fruitcake, sherry-type wine character, light toffee. On the finish, not nearly as bitter as expected, hop flavour has faded and a light bitterness remains. Slight metallic tang, maybe a touch oxidized, fairly light booze for the ABV. Body quite full, a little sticky and a little oily, very little carbonation. Pretty big malt bomb, quite sweet, thankfully the booze is toned with age but so too the hop backbone needed to balance out the sugars. So a good barley wine, but not my favourite.
3.5 Brune rougeâtre. Nez légèrement métallique. Très caramélisé. Légèrement madérisé. Sucré à fond. Fruit séché. Datte. Raisin. Biscuit. Bien.
3.9 2008 bottle. Pours a hazy dark brown with a ring of tan head. Aroma of caramel, booze and dark fruit. Taste of dark fruit and caramel.
3.6 Dark brown color and no head. Aroma and taste is sweet and has roasted malt and toffee. Medium-full body. Aftertaste has alcohol.
4.5 Bottle from Friar Tucks in St. Louis. Smells of brown sugar and dark fruits. Taste matches with a strong plum flavor and almost no alcohol burn. Exceptionally good beer.
3.6 Bottle split at Jacks a Slapper tasting, thanks to Paulo, 12/05/14. 2008 vintage. Hazed mahogany brown with a limited beige covering. Nose is dark toffee fudge, dark fruit rinds, lgiht smokey bacon vibes, dark malts, caramelised brown sugar. Taste comprises molasses, light bandaid, sherry notes, boozey tones, hint of oxidisation, brown sugar, faint toffee. Full bodied, fine carbonation, light booze and a pinch of spice in the close. Decent for the age, light oxidisation has crept in but still a good sipper and probably not at 12% on this night!
4.4 40 cl, flaske, 12,0 % ABV, købt i Irma på Østerbrogade, 1. juni 2014. OBS! Enjoy'ed in the dark! Voldsomt overvældende for ukendte smagsløg. Her er masser af tørret frugt-sødme og øllet er tykt som flydende nektar ned i ganen... This is definetly Slow Drinking!!! PS! Fik jeg nævnt eftersmagen? Lang, lang og god...
3.6 Tap@brewpub. Brown murky, sevage- like (they say it’s the last of the last keg they’ll ever make). Really intensive toffee.. candy, with some herbs there to balance it out. Thick oily body, really powerful robust. Cookie dough (chocoale chip). Full bodied. Really nice.
3.6 Bottle @ Jack the Sipper. Hazy deep red with a tiny head. Marzipan. And raisin bread. Plenty off cocoa and roasted coffee. Taste is leather, meat drippings, really sweet caramelised sugar. Coffee. Full body, oily. OK.
3.8 Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Paul. Vintage 2008. Pours lightly unclear amber-gold with a bubbly, tan head. The nose has old fruits, slight Parmesan cheese, jammy fruits. Big sweet flavor, lots more jammy fruits, gummies, caramel, fruitcake. Full bodied with fine, spritzy carbonation. Warm finish with further gummie fruit candies, caramel. Rich, sugary, a bit boozy. Pretty damn hefty but I do enjoy it.
1.8 24.04.2014, 0,5l bottle (bottled 2008) @ BBGTC tasting: Small slightly fizzy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly metallic fruity, well oxidized, caramel malts, toffee, butterscotch, metal tank, dried fruits, "knekk", grass, almond essence. Taste is very sweet and medical harsh, sugar, hay, citrus peel, almond essence, butterscotch, grass, cardboard, alcohol, "knekk". Medium bitterness, sweet harsh mouthfeel. Meh!
3.1 Pours a bronze color with a small tan head. Oxidized aroma with light toast and sweet malts. Taste is sweet but somewhat harsh. Caramel and dark dried fruots. Full body and soft co2.
3.7 Bottle, shared with Parksy and Grippitis. Is there a story behind this name? Because for some reason it makes me chuckle. This is downright cloudy, medium brown with a golden crown that retains nicely. Aroma is extremely brothy, like Bovril, with sweet brown sugary undertones. Brothy malty chewy palate, Triscuits, bread, sponge toffee. Showing its age, but I still liked it,
3.7 Flaska 2008. Väldigt stiltypisk engelsk barleywine. Mörk kopparfärgad-rödbrun.Tung maltbas. Mycket torkade frukter. Låg beska. Grötiga jästpartiklar mot slutet
3.8 on tap at the brewpub. rich shade of ruby amber with a lingering thin head; loads of strawberry jam in the aroma; pleasant fllavours of toffee apple, dried fruits and a slightly tinny bitterness. very drinkable for the strength
3.7 (Bottle). The smell and taste is sweet with aromas of raisins, brown sugar, figs and caramel malt. The taste is a little vinous with hints of warming alcohol. An impressive beer with well balanced flavors!
3.9 Bottle from Bu11zeye. Pours hazy dark amber with no head. Aroma of dark sugar and dark plummy fruit. Med + body. Heat barely discernible. Flavor is brown sugar, dark fruit, perhaps earthy hop. Finishes pleasantly, but much less than dry.
3.5 Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours dark brown with no head, just a few bubbles and a citrusy fruit aroma. There is a sweet treacle flavor, very syrupy with noticeable alcohol.
3.6 Bottle from Mane Liquor for PBS tasting. Cellared for about 2-3 years. Juicy prune and booze on the nose. The booze is still in your face after all this time.Much less heat in the taste. It’s still there but not quite as offensive as on the nose. Loads of prunes, plum, dates and currants. Very sticky date like with brown sugar playing a sweet part. Good stuff and has mellowed out nicely
3.7 40 cl bottle 12.0% abv. Pours dark amber with thin head and sweet and fruity aroma. taste is very sweet and alcoholic with plums and caramel. not bad but i’m not a fan
3.7 On tap @ the brewpub. Pours slightly hazy ruby amber with small off-white head. Clear aroma of malt, caramel and booze. Sweet, malty flavour with pronounced notes of caramel, sugar and alcohol (rather warming). Sweet aftertaste. A good barley wine, though you shouldn’t drink it before listening to your favourite lullaby.
