Nørrebro SEVEN Imperial Stout (Niepoort Barrel)

Nørrebro SEVEN Imperial Stout (Niepoort Barrel)

Editor’s note: 1092 bottles of 37,5 cl made.

English: Seven Niepoort Barrel is a very
rich imperial stout, brewed in
October 2008 by 7 of the best
brewers in Denmark by a pooling
of their individual recipes for the
beer. After primary fermentation,
this fraction of the brew was
racked into a port wine barrel
from our friends at Niepoort. After
7 (!) months in the barrel, the beer
is intensely full bodied, with rich
port like sweetness. The aroma
and flavour is dominated by ripe
grapes, port, coffee, chocolate
and liquorice roast characters.
Silky smooth and full palate with
a medium sweet, warming and
long aftertaste.

4.2 375 ml bottle bought @ Bishops Arms Örebro. Pours oily pitch black with a small dark chocolate brown head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet with roasted malts, wood, red wine, alcohol, milk chocolate, dark roast coffee, prunes, overripe grapes, orange peal, vanilla, cereal, liquorice root, resin and very subtle hints of oxidation. Taste is sweet, bitter and sour with bitter chocolate, prunes, overripe grapes, wood, dark roast coffee, pine, heavily roasted malts, burnt wood, sweet dark bread, lemon zest, liquorice fudge, red berries, burnt sugar, wet soil, port wine, hints of moss and resin and very subtle hints of metal. Mouthfeel is intense, sticky sweet, boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with port wine, wood, wet soil, red berries, burnt wood, bitter chocolate and coffee. Amazing smell supported by a solid imperial stout with lots of port and red wine notes adds up to a very good beer.
3.9 31st December 2012 Opaque black beer, short lived dark chocolate coloured head. Soft palate. Rich dark malt with unsweet dark chocolate and repressed dark fruits. I know Port Wine pretty well and Niepoort Ports tend to have some Sherry characteristics, so no big surprise to find some Sherry character from the barrel. As the beer warms up the nose opens up and reveals dark chocolate and the flavours integrate more. Minerals in the finish.
4.2 Pours completely black with no head. Aroma is dark berries, i especially get black currants along with figs, cocoa beans, fruity coffee, sweet port notes, vanilla, oatmeal, brown sugar and I feel the molasses sweetness. Taste is figs, vanilla, sweet port notes, savery, caramel, coffe, oatmeal thickness, dark dried fruits, molasses and full body! Very good "take your time" imperial stout.
4.5 bottle thanks RasmusOtt! completely black! dark brown small head. Aroma: Very fruity, dried fruits, some vanilla, coffee, cocoa, black currants, figs, earthy, dusty, savory, slight farty notes, brown sugar, molasses, smells so good! Taste: silky smooth, some tart vinous notes, woody, light druity acidic notes. raisins, figs plums, prunes, vanilla, fruity coffee, chocolate, grassy, molasses, brown sugar, slight sugar burn, tingly, plant sap, sweet tobacco,
4.1 375mL with a super dong whale thanks to rasmusott. Pours fairly ink with ruby highlights with a thin, red Martian foam. Fruity fresh nose with strawberry and raspberry dark chocolate. Smoked dark chocolate and mild saltwater with kalamata olive brine. Very sharp and savory. Taste is super rich and oily, massive silky palate. Quite dry and salty with big umami and roasty savoriness. Superlative silky palate. I love the savory complex nose of this bad boy. Taste is sharp and savory with big dark chocolate bitterness. Yum yum yum.
4.3 Bottle courtesy of RasmusOtt, thanks! Totally black, scant brown edge head. Aroma of dark chocolate syrup, liquorice, prunes, plums. Taste is concentrated cocoa, extra dark espresso, prune juice. Very nice.
3.9 37.5 cL bottle, courtesy of blomster. Thanks, Christer! Pours a deep, dark chocolate-brown color with a slight medium-brown head with excellent lacing. Layers of bitter chocolate, cocoa, and dried red fruits; restrained sweetness and nicely bitter. Full bodied with light carbonation. Loads of viscous dried fruits, dark chocolate, and a vinous alcohol warmth that never seems other than perfectly integrated; notes of caramel and touches of oxidation, but nothing beyond a hint of paper and dried caramel. Delicious. Long-lasting finish of caramel, dates, and bitter chocolate; lightly warming.
4.0 Dark brown. Sticky body. Raw, blank wood, grapes and a soft malty base. Smooth body, but sharp tones as well. Very long aftertaste. Nice brew! (375ml bottle, at dEnk house tasting)
3.8 Rating #2600. Pours black with a thin dark chocolate/reddish head. Aroma of booze, raisin, sugary malt, vanilla, nougat, and chocolate. Flavor is more roast and chocolate as opposed to the overbearing sweetness in the aroma (nevertheless it still is quite a sweet beer especially in the aftertaste). Unfortunately seems as though the coffee has faded by this point. Definite grapey/winy texture to the palate and some of the sweetness is not just the malt and booze but the fruits of the wine barrel. Overall, quite a tasty, unique beer and it seems to have held up well over time. 7/4/8/4/15 [3.8/5]
3.3 old rating: Black color with good beige head. Roasted chocolate aroma. Full-bodied, hoppy imperial stout that sticks to the cleft.
3.8 (bottle shared by nbutler!) Pours dark brown with a garnet hue and a soapy tan head. Aroma had chocolate, some vinous notes, port/raisin. Taste is sweet with a touch of bitterness. Full bodied and slick. Bitter finish. Pretty good beer. Thanks Nick, I’d been wanting to try this one for a while.
3.4 The beer is black in color with a small tan head. A strong roasted malt aroma comes through along with a bit of coffee and bitter dark chocolate. The port offers a nice but subtle fruit character in the background. It’s somewhat boozy and definitely a touch oxidized. The beer doesn’t taste quite as boozy as it smells, but still shows the 12% ABV. Nice port flavor and some dark fruits along with a very heavy roast and some coffee. A strong oak flavor with a bit of a tannic feel to it. Only moderately sweet with notes of caramel, molasses, and toffee.
4.1 Bottle generously shared by nbutler11 @ Woodshed 1.0! Never really thought I’d get a chance to try any from this series and so glad I had the opportunity. Dark mahogany pour with a chestnut edge and small latte head. Aroma of cocoa, char, molasses, roasted coffee, and dark fruit. Lots of brownie, fudge, coffee and ash, along with a slight wine finish. Not a lot of vanilla or oak...getting more toasted malt than anything. Creamy even after the aging. The ABV is invisible. Nicely done but think this one would have been better fresh.
4.0 Bottled (Beer Hunters) Thanks oh6gdx! Deep black color, small brown head. Roasted malts, sweet caramel, cocoa and tar in the aroma. Full-bodied. Licorice, cocoa, light molasses and dark fruits. Lingering toastyness in the aftertaste. Balanced and smooth although can’t trace much of portwine here. Probably ageing (3 years) has cut the sweetness here.
5.0 Black with a chocolaty brown head. In the nose, coffee, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, toffee, oaky, raisins, figs, vanilla, alcohol. Taste, dark bitter chocolate with a well balanced smoothness, blueberries, dark berries, notes of cherries, and a great long finish of red apples and cream.
4.5 37.5cl bottle pours super dark and infrared around the edges with nice full mocha head. The aroma is just plain old yummy with molasses, very dark roasted malts, chocolate brownies, dark chocolate candy bar, black strap molasses and a bit of dark cherries. The taste is equally pleasing with both chewy and yummy and velvety smooth notes in the form of dark roasted malts, burnt malts, chocolate, vanilla, a mild red wine note and smooth sweet caramel covered wood. This is just plain yummy!
4.6 Black of color with a dark brown head. An aroma of liqurice, port, chocolate, honey and coffee - really nice, no bitterness. A flavor of liqurice, honey, coffee, chocolate - weak bitterness and oily texture.
4.4 Bottle. Black pour, thin tan head. Aroma full of port, roasted malt, chocolate, licorice, some alcohol, nuts, toffee and ripe fruits. Very full. Flavor is somewhat boozy, roasted bitter with a delicate port and fruity finish. Slightly out of balance, but an amazingly powerful brew.
4.2 Bottle. Huge port aroma hit the nose when opened. Aroma is port, bordeaux, fruits and some roasted malt. Flavour is strong and roasty bitterness covered in port and wood. Spicy, roasty, porty. Very nice.
4.1 Bottle thanks to David, what a celebration we had! Pours a black color with a small white head. A sweet sugary barrel of port wine, some metal and roast. The flavor is awesome; dry dark fruit, heavy port and sweet sugary liquors, loads of roast and metallic burnt malts. Very robust and strong. Great!

3.9 Bottle at Max and Jess’s housewarming. Dark pour with tan head. Roasted, chocolate, caramel, fruit, vinous, light licorice and coffee tones. Roasted, woody aroma tones. Bordeaux barrel was slightly better.
4.0 I got this at the brewery and took it to a local pub to share with the bartender who was feeding us beer. We walked in with it and things almost stood still, they couldn’t beleive we had this. This is apparently a highly regarded and hard to get great stout. They told me like five times to take it back with me but we cracked it anyway. Light sweet but lots of alcohol, nice wine notes here and there. Easy to drink.
4.1 Bottle. Black beer with a brown head. Vinous aroma, tar, chocolate, cocoa, rather roasted. Vinous roasted flavor, whisket, port, sweet fruits, figs, raisins, grapes, chocolate and cocoa notes.
4.3 From Voldby, DK. Bottled, 170610. Black with small head. Aroma komplex of rosted malt, berries and grapes. Flavor with coffee, chocolate, liqourice, fruit and balanced alcohol.
3.8 Bottle thanks to cquiroga. Tasted blind. Pours with a thick black body with no head. Aroma of brown sugar, chocolate, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, wine and alcohol. Flavors of alcohol, chewy, red wine, soil, fudge and earth. Smooth finish, very little carbonation.
3.7 Bottled. Thx rlgk. Pitch black. Small beige head. Like vinous soy-sauce. Slty with chocolate and coffee.
