North Coast Scrimshaw

North Coast Scrimshaw

Named for the delicate engravings popularized by 19th century seafarers, Scrimshaw is a fresh tasting Pilsner brewed in the finest European tradition from Munich and Klages malts, Hallertauer and Tettnang hops. Scrimshaw has a subtle hop character, a crisp, clean palate, and a dry finish.

3.5 Well I picked up a six-pack of this pilsner earlier this summer just to try something different from North Coast other than their Rasputin imperial stout. Overall in my experience this was a pleasant and refreshing mild pilsner that was light and quaffable while maintaining a traditional European noble hop presence. This consistently poured a bright full golden color with moderate carbonation, and with a classic pale pilsner maltiness on the nose. The pale malts are a little sweeter than usual in the taste, but the palate dries out quickly with a crisp herbal hoppiness in the finish. Not quite medium-bodied, this is a nice sessionable pilsner that admittedly isn't as full-flavored and bitter as a proper German pilsner, but it's a good balance of drinkability and character. Non-GMO certified ingredients are a bonus!
3.5 Medium gold pour, thin but steady head. Nose is Pilsner malt. Middle shows a medium mouthfeel, little oily on the tongue, sweet (almost carmelized) malt, some steady herbal hops. Finish is mild herbal bitterness with a little length. A little sweet for the style, but a very pleasant beer.
4.0 Fairly basic pilsner. Decent malt taste but plain & nondistinctive overall
2.8 Bottle pour. Clear yellow with a foamy white head. Light sweet malt aroma. Light to medium smooth body. Small bitter with a little salty finish. Very easy to drink.
3.5 Light crisp refreshing. On tap at Paolo's (labranos)
3.3 Backlog, bottle that pours a yellow gold with a small white head and average lace. Notes are bland hops, heavy malt, grains, and light spice. Probably a bit too sweet for a pils. medium bodied with lighter carbonation.
3.7 No, this isn't some super complex thing. It's a beer that is crafted well and can be an all day easy drink, so calm down hipsters. Not everything needs to be a mona lisa to be good.
3.0 Bottle from a supermarket in California - golden color, white head. an average good pils with some hoppy notes. medium bitterness. okay.
2.3 軽いピルスナー。コクがほしい
3.7 Bottle. Golden pour with malty aroma. Mouthfeel is a bit watery but the hops and malt are well balanced. What really makes this shine is that (per their website) this only has 100 calories a bottle and only 2 carbs. It's already impressive but that's just icing on the cake. A light craft beer that tastes good? Wow.
3.1 On tap. Pours a clear golden color with a small head. Aroma of grass, quite floral and hint of malt. taste of light malt sweetness, trace of grain and herbs. Mild bitterness and a clean finish. Light body, smooth, easy drinker.
3.4 Bottle. It pours a clear gold color with a white head. It is effervescent. It is malty with a clean, crisp and dry finish.
3.2 Bottle. Grainy malt aroma with notes of honey, citrus and some grassy hops. Pours clear pale golden colored with a half a finger of off white head that has excellent retention and good lacing. Starts with grainy malt and light citrus flavors. Finishes smooth, crisp and refreshing with honey and grassy hop flavors. Pretty nice pils, but unremarkable.
3.1 Draught at K-OZ. Pale gold with a medium head. Aroma of grain and a little fruit. Flavour is fruity malt, grain and a little spice, clean finish.
3.1 [12oz bottle from an Albertsons supermarket, Fullerton, CA] A straw coloured pour with a fast fading white head; sweet floral aroma; quite spicy floral taste with a grainy body, some honey and citrus; and a dry spicy finish. Not really a pilsner, but a passable pale lager.
3.9 esta cerveza es extraordinaria muy buen cuerpo, aroma a cebada y lúpulo totalmente recomendada
3.2 Bottle from Drinksville, Moseley. Fairly standard lager. Smooth, light across the tongue and attractively sweet. Like a Honey wet wipe.
2.9 A couple drafts with the team at the Kimpton Hotel. Pours a clear golden body with thin white lace. Mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with strong malt character, soft grains and light spice.
3.7 Way underrated. It has a really nice palate. It's juicy with nice citrus even though it doesn't have a huge bite.
3.3 From flight of 5oz tasters. Golden in colour with s bit of white head. It's a little sweet, somewhat yeasty, bready. Quite drinkable.
2.7 Taste: crisp, semi sweet, citrus, thin mouthfeel. Mild yeast nose. Golden hue, clear, with smaller delicate head and thin lace. Light body. Summer Pils.
1.7 This is a gold beer with moderate head. feels very light. A bit too happy for my liking but I can see how we can be enjoyed.
3.2 Generic at first but warms up into a sharp lightly spicy and sour pils. Pretty nice
3.0 Golden with a off white head - Malt aroma with some hops - Malt body with some hops to balance with bitterness - The malt goes into the finish wiht some bitterness - This was nice
3.2 The more that I have a good quality pilz, the more I am starting to like this style. In the past, I thought of pilsner as a sissy-boy lighter beer....but some times I am in the mood for something on the lite side. Like tonight for instance, hadn't really eaten much all day and was having pizza at 6pm (Pilsners are good paired with pizza btw!) A little early for something heavy, so why not sample a North Coast Scrimshaw Pils! Light golden color, semi-clear appearance. Flavor is mostly barley, wheat, and caramel malts. Tasted a little banana or something in there too. Very little hops here. Drank it fast. Ready for something thicker and stronger now.
3.7 A small taste from wiosna (tap) @ North Coast Brewery Taproom. Pours clear golden with a medium head. Aroma is crisp clean malts. Flavor is crisp clean malts with some grainy character and some hops. Very nice.
3.4 Draft at Cinder. Clear deep gold pour with an off-white fizzy/foamy top. Big blonde cracker malts with a crisp hop edge. Tangerine peels. Poppyseed bagels. Well carbonated. Thirst quenching.
3.4 A nice drinkable Pilsner in a craft world of ales. A nice starter craft beer. Someone with no knowledge of craft brews could drink this and say, "More flavor than my (fill in the blank Bud, Miller) but I can recognize it as a Pilsner.
3.7 12 oz. bottle pours a clear golden color with a tight white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is that of my favorite German pilseners: grassy and malty. Taste is sweet with a noticeable hop bitterness in the finish. Body is light to medium with a crisp mouthfeel. Easily drinkable, and more complex than I thought it would be. Another winner from North Coast.
3.7 4.4%ABV. Czech pils. Poured out gold. 6ºSRM. Nose is briny and consistent with a Gose which has aromas of brine, pickles and a hint of sulfur that you get with dried apricots and other dried fruit. Mouthfeel is watery. Palate has pale malt and barley water or barley soup on the end. Hops are noble and woody with a grassy, sappy finish. Lingers a little. Finish is beery and the hop finish with the sappy bitter lingers a little. Overall a hoppy pils which in my book puts is firmly in the Czech camp. Good.
