Northern Monk Northern Star Mocha Porter

Northern Monk Northern Star Mocha Porter

Coffee flavours in dark beer are always a glittering combination. Our Northern Star Mocha Porter takes this to another level, as we blend in ground coffee beans to the brew, full of bitterness and hazelnut hints, along with rich dark chocolate and lactose sugar to balance this full bodied dark ale. A collaboration with Leeds’ North Star Coffee Micro Coffee Roasters, Northern Star will guide you to a new taste experience.

Ingredients: Water, malted barley, oats, lactose, coffee, cacao powder, hops and yeast.

3.8 On tap at the Hanging Bat. Pours a very dark brown with light tan head. Aromas of roasted malts and black coffee. Flavors follow same with additional nuttiness and oily coffee. Nice
3.3 Dark brown with a medium light brown head. Aroma of coffee, cocoa and bread. Medium bitter with a coffee and bread.
3.8 A mildly cold brewed coffee-like beer. Super clean and complex, great version of the style. Northen Monk Manchester
3.6 From explosivedog, thanks: pours blackish with a ruby tinge with a beige head. Aroma is loads of roasted coffee beans, hints of vanilla, chocolate. Taste is sweet, loads of coffee, low bitter. Silky and creamy body, but still quite light. Tasty.
3.9 330ml can brewed in England at 5.2%. Largeish OK-duration head. Nearly-black opaque brown. Lactose and coffee aroma. Low carbonation. Lactose and coffee dominate the flavour, with some vanilla chiming in. Not too much of the underlying beer to be had, but what you do get isn't bad. If you fancy a lactose coffee porter then this may well fit the bill, but it's nothing to rave about - good fusion of bitterness and sweetness, but on the whole, merely serviceable, and rather like Brewdog's Elvis Juice, in my book a Porter should be able to have coffee and even vanilla flavours without adding the stuff. Old Engine Oil from Harviestoun packs most of the flavours found here without needing to add them...something to consider!
3.6 Can at home, koszi Bence! Pours black with huge beige head. Nose is big coffee, earthy notes. Taste is slightly bitter coffe and earthy notes again with a hint of coconut, this latter mainly in the finish. Light body, soft to average carbo.
2.9 Dark brown with quickly fading tan head. For aroma coffee grounds, the used kind. A smoking area, roasted malts and some dark bitter chocolate. Kinda bland taste. Softly bitter sweet. Medium body with medium fizz. Watery finish. Strange one.
3.6 Almost black beer, small head, aroma is coffee, malt, roast, taste is the same, bitter, long aftertaste nice.
3.5 Pitch black body with a minimal vanishing beige head. Aroma is fresh grinded coffee with a kick of dark chocolate. Taste is surprisingly sweet: milk chocolate, hazelnuts and notes of candy sugar. Mild roasted malts finish, but always with that sweet note. Also mineral notes. Low body, soft carbonation, slicky texture.
3.5 Can at home. Black color, middle foam size. Coffee in aroma, good stout taste. Good beer.
3.4 Blik 33cl thuis. Zoet, lactose, zacht, redelijk koolzuur, mokka, koffie, gebrande mout. Lactosezoet overheerst wat. (7-9-2019).
3.8 16.08.2019 AR: Kaffee, süsslich, Laktose TA: pechschwarz TA: Kaffee, süss, Laktose
3.0 Muddy brown colour with no head. Aroma and flavour are very sweet and indeed deliver on the Mocha. A bit too sweet overall.
3.8 September 18, 2018 - at The Draft House (Chancery) - on keg (I think). Opaque brown with a diminishing tan head. Appealing aroma - light coffee bean, cocoa/dark chocolate with a hint of peat, not all that bitter, but a solid 8. Taste follows, earthy but less actual peat and some raw cinnamon and hot pepper?? - mostly dark roast, overall. Slick, not as big-bodied as you would think, a bit sticky with low-level carbonation - medium coffee/malty not really bitter finish.
3.4 33 cl blik. Helder donker robijnrood van kleur, fijne creme schuimkraag. De geur is koffie en haver. Smaak is zoet, koffie, melk en vanille. Medium lichaam, veel koolzuur.
3.5 Aroma: Coffee, hazelnut, dark chocolate, caramel, rye bread, molasses, ash. Appearance: Very dark brown, creamy beige head. Taste: Typical lactose sweetness overwhelms the bitterness. Somewhat acidic. Palate: Medium body, average carbonation. Overall: Decent porter, coffee manifests itself strongly, although it is a bit ashy. The addition of lactose seems detrimental to the beer.
3.9 Puszka 330 ml.
3.7 Can sample. Thsnks Shmupi! Brown. Ash and coffee in the nose, dry, bitter, coffee, some ash in the mouth, full body, dry and bitter finish.
3.7 Puszka 0,33 litra, zakupiona w Bierland - Kraina 1000 Piw. Barwa ciemno-brązowa, z lekkimi brązowymi prześwitami. Aromat umiarkowanie kawowy. W smaku lekko słodkie, z wyraźną kawą. Do tego delikatnie kwaskowy. Goryczka niska.
3.8 Aroma of coffee, chocolate, caramel, toast and wood. Black with a tan head. Medium + sweet and medium bitter. Medium + body with average carbonation. Dry finish. Overall a really nice Porter. quite enjoyable.
3.5 Can. Aroma- intensive and well-balanced composition of pleasant coffee with milk and nice cocoa. Brown, clear, with a medium, beige head, which quickly disappears. Taste- very sweet, lactose sweetness dominates in the beginning. In the background, there are also clear cocoa and some coffee. No bitterness, no roasty notes. Low-bodied, with a low carbonation. All in all, it's ok, but nothing more.
3.4 Wygląd: Ciemnobrunatna barwa wpadająca w czerń, spore zmętnienie, dość obfita piana, drobno i średnio pęcherzykowa, niestety, znika dość szybko. Aromat: Całkiem przyjemny, dominuje kawa, w tle wafelki kakaowe i odrobina gorzkiej czekolady.
3.9 Cask at the Waggon & Horses, Stourbridge at 5.9%. Pours very dark brown with a medium head. Aroma is hazelnut, coffee chocolate. Taste has sweet creamy coffee and hazelnut throughout, with a light chocolate aftertaste.
3.3 Looks like cola with a thin tan white head. Aroma of ground coffee. Taste has a decent sweet coffee taste with hints of demerara sugar, milk and slight breadyness. Taste is actually fairly similar to the Starbucks coffee in a can. It's good, but there are better coffee porters.
3.2 Can. Very dark brown with a large light tan head that collapses rapidly to a coat. Aroma of lots of medium roast coffee, brown sugar, light roast. But it's really rather sweet, the coffee is a bit dulled and I waited for a finish that never really arrived.
3.5 Can from Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Aroma is beany coffee with roasted malt, coffee grounds, chocolate, some caramel and a touch of liquorice. Flavour is moderate to medium sweet with a moderate roasty bitterness. Body is medium. A bit sweeter than I expected, nice coffee.
3.4 Can at home from station 1280 in Antwerp. Pours slightly milky but rather watery with short-lived chocolate head. Lots of coffee indeed, actual coffee. Light chocolate, cocoa powder, licorice, distinct hops, lactose. The coffee and cocoa are very tasty but otherwise as a porter rather thin, for me the combination with the hops and lactose is a bit unbalanced too.
3.2 From tap. Strong aroma of roasted coffee and chocolate. Very dark colour like tar. Ok beer, good in winter
4.0 Northern Monk - Northern Star Mocha Porter (330ml Can, 5.9%) Aroma - Chocolate, roasted coffee, earthy, bread, fresh figs. Appearance - Near black, heavy tan head. Taste - Dark roasted coffee, milk chocolate, figs, raisins, malts, bittersweet, wholemeal bread with a dry finish. It's a shining example of what to expect from Northern Monk. It's a refreshing, but interesting drinking experience. Any coffee loving porter drinker will adore this brew.
