Oakham Scarlet Macaw

Oakham Scarlet Macaw

Cask: Regular (previously Occasional). Also available bottled at 4.8% - filtered but unpasteurised.

Tart gooseberry and soft peach on the nose. Gooseberries and fruit to taste, before an intense bitterness that’s as sharp as a macaw’s screech!

4.1 A nice drinkable beer. It's one of the newer intensely hoppy ales made with American Hops. If you like - Shipyard American IPA - Shipyard Rye Ale - Oakham Citra ... you will love this. i do.
2.1 A: Cloudy amber with a small off-white head N: Amber malts, cough syrup T: Minty and bitter, amber malt P: Medium O: I really struggled to finish this beer. A rather disagreeable flavour combo.
3.9 0.5l from bottle bought at Waitrose. Classical British golden ale, with a nice touch especially to Amarillo hops. Bitter and dry finish
3.6 From bottle at Doolittles. Clear gold with a thin white head. Fruity nose. Tart fruit flavors, some underlying sweet malt and hay. Light body, lingering fresh, bitter finish.
2.9 I like Oakham beers although there isn’t a lot of variety - the pine/citrus/tartness is a characteristic of most, if not all. Scarlet Macaw is perfectly drinkable, but on this occasion I was left with the distinct impression that it is at the lower end of the Oakham offerings in flavour and freshness. Citra still reigns supreme. Scarlet Macaw, in comparison, is a bit lifeless, flat and quite stale. Beautiful colour though!
3.8 500ml bottle. Good on the nose, plenty of citrus and lingering aftertaste. Excellent accompiment to savoury dishes and cheese particularly.
3.4 Appearance is amber, with a solid cream head. Aroma- very fruity and orangey, fruitcake, marmalade. Taste- fruit, orange, soft malts, marmalade on toast, subtle hop bitterness. Good.
3.4 On tap (cask) at Williamson’s Tavern, Bank (London) on 27-Mar-2017. Clear golden colour with a large white head. Aroma of malt, cereal, herbs and pine. Light body and soft carbonation. Taste of caramel, orange, grapefruit and biscuit malt. Smooth and creamy. Light bittersweet fruity finish. Good session ale.
3.1 Tasting at Matt’s, 4.8% ABV Hazy golden color. Weedy hops in the aroma. Cereal flavor, some chamomile, some weed hops; definitively old, stale, but not bad.
3.5 Cask pint at Tennant’s on Byres Road, Glasgow. A light golden colour. Sizable head.
1.5 500ml bottle @ Matt’s. Pours a clear orange copper colour with no head. Nose is unpleasant something with malty backing. Flavour is not much better, herbal and bitter. Sadly I just have to say no :(
2.8 500mL bottle, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out boiled vegetables and biscuity malt. Flavour is a little better, with herbal hops. light vegetal notes, and biscuity malt. Better on the palate than the nose. It’s decent.
3.2 Cask. Pours honey gold with white foam top. Aroma straw and pale malt. Taste dry pine bitter with a background of tropical fruits that sour on the palate and thus accentuating the bitterness. There are others in the Oakham stable that I prefer
3.2 500 ml bottle. Clear lighter copper, mostly fading loose white foam. Fruity berry aroma, some spice. Taste is berry fruity, lean pale malt, earthy grassy bitter hop. Softer carbonation, light-medium bodied, moderately hopped. LBW (Lagerboys Be Wary)
3.0 (cask) slightly opalescent golden colour with a creamy off-white head. aroma of lemon peel and yeast, with a hint of straw, some light raisins and grass. flavour is mostly herbal hops and straw, again quite yeasty, with a medium-bitter nettle finish. medium-bodied with soft carbonation.
3.0 Cask at the Robin Hood, Guildford. Pours golden amber with a small white head. Aroma of hop, caramel, malt. Quite sweet, light bitterness. Medium body, soft carbonation. Finish is dry with growing bitterness.

3.1 50cl bottle shared with friends vintage 2015. Medium white head. Very hazy golden pour. Past it’s prime.
3.2 Bottle shared some time past best before date. Slight hazy golden with white head. Lots of lychees, sweet malts, light grass and herbs. Medium sweet and light bitter. I guess some of the bitterness has gone. It’s still quite fruity though. Just medium bodied. Past it’s prime, but still not bad.
3.5 Bottle. Golden in colour. Slight head. Very Fruity; grapefruit citrus, peach, lemon in the finish. Very Hoppy; citrusy hops, grassy notes, nice hop bitterness. Malty; pale malts, caramel. Bitter citrus fruity hoppy throughout becoming increasingly bitter into the dry finish. Very drinkable. Decent. (2014-04-29)
3.1 Bottle. Pours golden. Little head. Smells of pine and citrus. Tastes resinous and tangerines. Nice dry bitterness. Good, but not the best I tried from Oakham.
3.6 50cl bottle. Light hazy gold to orange appearance. Thin white head. Medium bitterness. Light sweetness. Medium body. Aroma and flavour is hops, pine, orange, pineapple, light resin, light caramel, blueberries.
3.6 Bit unclear, golden colored, small off white head. Aroma is of some pale malt, medium+ hoppy fruity peach, floral aroma. Taste is medium sweet pale malt, some caramel, light biscuit, medium peachy fruity, floral and less citrus aroma, medium bitterness, dry finish. Medium bodied, average carbonation, bit oily. (bottle, Pivoljub Ljubljana)
2.6 Tasted this in the Last Post, Paisley (JDW) on the 3rd November 2016. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear amber in colour with a thin white head. Weak malty aroma with notes of green apple and a slight hint of boiled eggs. Thin resiny mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malt gives a digestive biscuit base with tart gooseberry fruit coming through in the mouth. Dry dusty hop resins impart a metallic tang to the bitter aftertaste but not cloyingly fortunately. Slight malt present in the weak finish with tart fruit still evident in the palate. Lacking in depth of flavour and complexity compared to other Blonde Ales at a similar ABV.
3.6 500ml bottle. Clear golden/light amber colour with a thin white head, good retention. Aroma: fruity, peach, gooseberry, caramel malt. Taste: tart citrus fruity, gooseberry, caramel, slight sweetness followed by a pronounced and lingering bitterness. Soft-medium carbonation, medium body, bitter aftertaste. Quite drinkable.
3.8 This is good. Pours gold with creamy head. Malty bready nose. Smooth mouthfeel. Lovely bitter crisp taste with sweet note on follow through. Stupidly drinkable.
3.6 Bottle from Waitrose , Bromley. Amber pour with a white head. Sweet fruit aroma. Sweet spice and fruit laden flavour. Good stuff.
