3.6 Quite a dark opaque pour with a short head that leaves just a thin ring of lace. Licorice and leather on the nose, roasted spice, sourness. A strange animal on the palate; big sour notes with leather and coffee and spice and vanilla. The texture is quite creamy as well.
3.9 19/02/2013 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Bruna, impenetrabile, schiuma grigio-beige abbondante e molto persistente. Corpo medio, carbonazione moderata. Non male.
4.4 brown to black colour. roast, bean and infected notes dominante the aroma, licorice as well. creamy profile, sweet chocolate, lees. it is like a sour stout. strange brew with whiskey finish. I like this one alot alot.
3.5 Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Deep opaque brown body, thick clumping tan/light brown head. Tart brown sugar nose with chocolate, pineapple, and other tart fruits. Brown sugar also dominates the body, with lots of sugar and cocoa and only modest sourness and funk. Soapy, not too funky or challenging.
4.2 Bottle shared at the December tasting in Santa Cruz. Nice brown ale base, maple comes through at the end, tart, subtle and complex. Consecration-esque acetic tartness. Dry bretty finish.
3.2 Bottle thanks to Santa. Dark brown pour with a thin fizzy beige head. Aroma was subdued. Lots of sweet fruit and booze up front. Light notes of Brett and wood but sweet fruit dominate. Plums, rum soaked raisins, brown sugar and light vanilla come through. Mouthfeel was somewhat syrupy and had a fizzy, tingly mouthfeel. Not bad, like a really big dubble with a hint of funk and wood.
3.2 750 ml. Deep brown body with a short, fizzy beige head, rapidly diminishing. Aroma of wood, earth, brett, roasted malts. The flavor is heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately to heavily sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, soft carbonation. Sherry-like flavors, but cloyingly sweet with peppery hot alcohol in the finish. Brett characteristics are lost in the sweet malts.
2.9 Shared by Darrell. Thanks man. The cork shot into the ceiling upon opening. Huge tan head that coats the glass with sticky lacing. The beer is fairly hazy and appears a chestnut brown color. The aroma brings roast, barrels, chocolate, wine, fruit, alcohol. Quite complex, but not as inviting as some of the upper tier beers in this genre. Nutty flavor, with a vinous character. Red wine comes through quite a bit. Additional notes of fruit, chocolate. Ok. Not particularly tart or sour. A light fruity sweetness throughout. Medium bodied and rich. Moderate carbonation. Overall, this was ok. One small glass is plenty. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-06-2012
3.8 750 ml bottle via either Dak or BOLTZ7555. Pours deep brown, hazy with a large yellowish beige head. The aroma has some toasted malt, moderate sweetness, funk, tart fruits, red grapes, wood and Brett. The flavor has dry Brett character, mild funk, tart fruit, caramel, wood, dark fruits and a splash of alcohol. An interesting beer for sure.
3.8 Bottle. Poured a hazy dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted earthy sour aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy dark sour flavor with a medium to heavy dark sour finish of moderate to long duration. This is a solid beer for style.
4.2 Very solid and complex. Primary notes are all Brett, with just a slight undercurrent of nuttiness.
3.7 This was the loudest beer i have ever opened. Pours a very dark opaque brown, near black with many fingers of tan/light brown head. Probably should have waited longer after transport to open it. Good retention and some lacing. Smell is predominantly sour and slightly funky, hints of alcohol, very inviting. Taste is mild sour up front that builds. Subtle nutty, oak, and malt on the nose, fading into mild sour fruit and alcohol tones. Alcohol is noticeable but not overpowering/unpleasant. Very strong carbonation and medium body, with refreshing mouthfeel and dry finish. Oak and alcohol become very apparent when it gets warm and has lost most of its carbonation. Big, bold, complex, a nice Brett beer indeed.
4.3 Smells like a barley wine. Very slightly sour right at the start...nutty brown ale them comes through. Strong alcohol presence throughout - but in a smooth enduring way....hints of maple as well.
4.0 Big bottle to snifter (thanks alexsdad06). Looks good; a foggy brown with light beige lacing. Smells good too; tart and funky. Tastes like it smells with a good mouthfeel. Nice!
3.7 Bottle. Pours a dark brown-red with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is tart and yeasty, with fruit juice, malt, and a bit of wood. Taste is more woody than sour, with toasted malt, oak, booze, and some yeasty crispness. Lingering woodiness that ends a bit watery. Nice.
3.7 Appearance: Huge pop taking the cork out along with some head coming right out the top. Nothing much just like a oozing of head. Dark brown almost black. Khaki fluffy 2 finger head. Aroma: Sweet, sour, funk, sweet fruits. Taste: sweet fruits followed by the sour and funkness from the brett yeast. Oak characters present from the barrel aging. Overall: Very pleasant sour. Easy drinking. The 10% is masked extremely well. I think if this is aged for some time in the bottle the sourness would really pop and the flavors would be even more blended.
4.0 Pours dark brown with beige head. Smell is robust roasted grain, almost a coffee scent with an old cabinet funk and bright oak barrel aged goodness. The taste is rich and full with medium body. There is an underlying sweetness to gain the alcohol but the brew is ever drying with a must and dry grass hopped character. The grain lasts prominently with a bitter roasted effect and dense dark feel. There is a fresh oaked taste, light vanilla and toasted wood, throughout as well, parallels the grain, adds even more crazy corners to get lost in.
3.1 Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy brown with medium beige head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is wood, fruit and brett. Thin mouthfeel with light toffee chocolate and some funk with nice smooth finish. A decent sour/wild ale from Odell.
3.8 NOTF 2010. Deep brown pour with a tight white head. The nose is soft and a little bit toasty. Light molasses and some brown sugar as well. Toffee and a lightly sweet crystal malt sort of character as well. Flavour is lovely - a touch of plumminess and fruity yeast contribution. Softly chewy yet retains a touch of dryness that is pretty appealing. Light licorice on the finish with some more brown malt character.
3.8 Bottle at the Funky 8, Brooklyn, NYC. Pours red-brown with a moderate, off-white head. Smokey and sweet, with notes of cocoa, brett, some tangy leather. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. A bit more funk to the finish, with sweet, dark malts and some restrained, roasted cocoa. Good.
3.5 750 ml bottle courtesy of tkrjukoff. Pours hazy dark wooden brown with a creamy brownish and pinkish white head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is slightly sweet, tiny sour, funky and malty with dark bread, red wine vinegar, dark grapes, barnyard, moist soil, burnt sugar, graham crackers, hay, resinous wood and cereal. Taste is tiny sweet and very malty with sweet dark bread, brett, hay, roasted malts, bitter chocolate, dry soil, dark roast coffee, dark grapes, wood, hazelnuts, cereal, lemon juice and hay. Mouthfeel is round, dry, tiny tart and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, slightly bitter and tiny tart with roasted malts, cereal, hazelnuts, wood, lemon zest, dry soil, lemon juice, green grapes, brett and coffee.
3.6 (Bottle) Pours dark mahogany brown with a small head. The aroma holds dark bread, caramel, nuts, touch of milk chocolate, light barnyard, cider and a whisper of flowers. The flavour is light sweet, light to medium bitter and light acidic with notes of dark bread, caramel, milk chocolate, nuts and barnyardy brett. The mouthfeel is round and tiny tart with a medium carbonation. Malty, light fruity, woodsy and bretty finish. Medium bodied.
3.7 Bottle at Mumsig Miniprovning, Göteborg. Dark amber beer with a nice offwhite head. Sourish barnyard aroma, chocolate, metal, cocoa powder, vanilla, milk, leather. Chocolate flavor, cocoa, barnyard, brett, sourish, vinegar, banana notes. Milky finish with banana, chocolate and brett.
3.9 Bottle @ MMP. Brett barrel brown ale... try to say that fast after 20 beers. Pours ruby red mahoganybwithba good beige head leaving some lace. aroma is brettt sour malty fruity stable slightly sweet. Flavor is as aroma, well malty pungent bitter and nicely sour acidy. Finishes bitter malty fruity and sourish.
3.7 Pours medium Brown with nose of brown malt and slight brett. first sip is beautiful balance of malt and slight sweetness. tastes like a@bourbon barrrel aged brett beer finish is nice with some dried fruit and a smooth balanced finish.
3.9 brown pour with a cream head. nose is brett, wood, pineapple, and maple sugar. chewy on the palate, brett, wood, faintly tart, roasted malts, and a smooth finish.
3.6 This brown ale has some interesting flavors, but not very sour. Plenty of malts though, decent with some Brett, but it just doesn’t carry through too well. It’s ok.
3.0 More brown ale than sour. A bit of an edge to this. Some vinegar, malty & caramel. Moderate body, ashy. something in the aroma...can’t place it. Good but more brown than sour with a bit of "other" in there.
3.4 Hazy brown pour with small tan head. Aroma of fruit, caramel, malts and something else that I cant put my finger on, possibly brett, which I dont know what it smells like. Taste of caramel, malts, fruit and then a strange hoppy something aftertaste that didnt really compliment all the other flavors. Very close to being an awesome beer but not quite.
2.3 Not a fan, tastes like a beer that's been infected so its been chucked into a Brett ridden barrel.. It's a bit odd
