3.4 Date: March 24, 2012 Mode: Bottle Source: DalzAle tasting Description: Clear yellow pour with huge head and lacing. Fruity, spice, yeast in aroma and taste.
4.0 Bottle. Clear light yellow pour, lasting lacing and a light lemon/hay aroma. Flavor is light lemon, very effervescent, a little bit of flowers and herbs. Love this stuff, tasty.
3.3 Bomber. Poured cloudy, paler golden with a towering cap of sticky white head. The aroma picked up meaty bread and a pinch of honey surrounded by floral notes, peppery spices, and a little citrus zest.. nice, but maybe too aggressive. The flavor found the same meaty bread and honey plus some peach and apricot skins surrounded by white pepper, cloves, and tangy wheat.. more sour and spicy on the strong finish. Medium-bodied, with very filling carbonation on the palate.. nice spicy notes, but everything seemed overdone, and it was not refreshing.
4.0 Didn’t realize this company had already gone out of business. 22 ounce bottle purchased over a year ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($5.99). Pours a clear honey-amber hue with three big fingers of fluffy pillowy white head (which only very slowly recedes). Aroma of yeast, banana, lemon, wheaty bread, and a slight funk (damp basement). Flavor of yeasty bananas, bready malts, grape, light citrus, and some peppery spice. Dry and lightly sweet finish. A really great version of the style...too bad this brewery isn’t around anymore. 3.8 Dry peppery saison with some solid crackery malts, and fresh herbs and grassy hops. Shame this isn’t still around!
3.8 22 ounce bottle that poured a nice gold color. Aromas of orang, wheat, apricot, and grass. Flavor was a sweet orange, with lemon zest, wheat and a touch of spice. Very refreshing beer.
3.5 Well funked aroma, pear base, sharp cheddar accents. Shimmering golden, enormous white head. Lemon and pear flavor ending in lemongrass. Alcohol well concealed. Rather milquetoast, but good.
4.3 22oz Bottle. Sean, thank for sharing a great Saison that I’ll probably never get to try ever again! After having drank innumerable funky or sour Saisons, there’s something really refereshing about biting into this one. It probably doesn’t hurt that it’s damn damn good. The aroma is clean and conditioned with fresh pale fruits and lots of nice, controlled Belgian spice. Flavors emit similar, with really refined, smoothed, and matured combinations of peppery yeast and crackery malt. Super light, fresh, and fluffy. One of the better straight American Saisons I’ve had for sure.
3.3 Sent to me by a kind trader in Norcal. What a pleasant extra to get from a now defunct brewery. Pours a foggy orange juice, really fluffy white bread dough and cupcake frosting. Mountains of slow moving lacing that hovers over a foggy pulpy body. smell is slightly floral, mild perfumes of lemongrass and bamboo. Taste is little bit of lemon, mustard seed, and arugula. Taste is quite good, the mouth if fizzy but not quite effervescent. The flavors hold pretty decently, and I think this is a respectable saison. Very dinkable, simple but above average. Sad to see this one go.
4.2 Bomber big thanks to Ynot2. Batch 003 I suppose. Appearance : Slightly hazy yellow with a big fluffy and creamy white head. Long head retention. Some lacing. Aroma : Peppery with awesome yeasty phenols and light funk. Light citrusy tartness with herbal notes. Nose is just awesome. Taste : Yeasty with peppery notes. Herbal hops with peppery finish. Light citrusy notes. Finish is quite dry but with a lingering malty "roundness". Carbonation is generous and fluffy. Overall : Very nice citrusy notes with light funk and great yeast. A tiny bit too spicy for me on the finish. Nose is heavenly. Head retention seems infinite. Gets a bit better with time. Carbonation fades which is a shame but spices fades a bit too which is nice.
2.9 bottle.... murky gold, nice huge cloudy off white head...really pleasant aroma, but on the sweeter side, lots of citrus, lemon zest, spices, a little sugar cookie, solid and refreshing despite lacking balance... the taste is even sweeter than the nose, too sweet, no hop balance and the spice is gone too, finish is weak and watery, disappointing despite drinkable
3.5 Couldn’t believe this beer is retired. Bottle from EricAndersNavy, thanks! Pale golden color. Soft citrus and hoparoma. Firm citric hopflavor, with lots of citrusfruit and pineapple and other tropical fruits. Somewhat sticky mouthfeel. Soft hopbitter aftertaste. Very pleasant summer ale.
4.0 22 oz. bottle purcahsed at the Pizza Port bottle shop in Carlsbad, California. Pour is a cloudy yellow golden with a loose white head. Aroma is grain wheat, mild phenols, and a pleasant lightly spiced yeast. Fresh and engaging nose. Taste is a nice full bodied cracked grain wheat, light clove, the lightly spiced yeast, and a gentle clean grain finish. Maybe a light citrus in the finish. I enjoyed the transition of flavors, and the anchor of the wheat element at the start and finish. Palate is medium bodied, beautifully un filtered mouth feel with prickly fine carbonation and a clean finish. Nice Saison, shame they’re gone.
4.0 bottle at dak’s 1/2/11. this is like the yellowest beer i’ve seen! skunky noble hop aroma mixed with notes of lemon, yeast, pale graininess, straw, grass and a touch of vanilla. the flavor shares all of the aroma’s notes and adds a little bitterness and pepper on the finish. the medium body is crisp and refreshing yet there is a little sludgey-ness. 8/4/8/4/16+
3.6 bottle shared at 5000 tasting - nice funk, fruity with a nice wheaty body. honey, fruit with a hunt of sour fruits and peaches.
4.0 Clear Golden big head. Tropical fruit with minor citrus notes Dry and Crisp very little sweetness. Yum. Sad to hear their stopping making this.
4.1 So sad to hear that Peter and Rick have hung up the boots on Odonata. Maybe the world wasn’t ready for Saison, but I know there is a lot to the story beyond that. Anyway, seems about time to throw up a memorial to one of the best American-brewed saisons to have briefly graced the market. After having a few bottles of this, I never liked is quite as much as the awesome draft version, but it was nonetheless a very good saison. Lots of tropical fruit, citrus, and round, bready malt flavors packed in a glowing deep gold beer with a big white head. Hopefully Peter is brewing something comparable now up at Sutter Buttes in Yuca City. Now I just have to find an excuse to make the drive all the way up there...
3.8 Bottle at Craigs. Poured a nice light gold colour with a thick white head. Gooseberries and some bready yeast on the nose. The taste was caramel and malty, alcohol was fairly present and some yeast in there. A thick, creamy mouthfeel. Likeable but not overly funky for a saison
3.8 Bottle courtesy of cgarvieuk. Pale amber with a bubbly white head. Nose is grassy, bready, very clean. Hints of gooseberry and yeast on the palate. Funky, dry and fizzy. Hint of alcohol on the finish.
3.5 Bottle at home .. golden yellow ... thin white head ... soft sweet lemon toffee ... orange peel nose.. light bitter front ... light yeasty ... soft fruits ... hint of goozeberry ... decent.
3.4 15 June 2011, bottle at one my last cgarvieuk tasting! light gold, clear, some steady bubbles, thin bubbly head. slightly yeasty, sugary golden malt. full body, slightly fizzy. sweet and clean for a saison. some bitter finish. not as farmyardy as i like a saison. this is more of a belgian gold ale. but nice.
4.0 Poured from bomber into a glass. Foaming is instant and prevalent! Color is straw like a wheat, and cloudy. Aroma is similar to most wheats i’ve tasted, Clove and banana. Flavour was offputing the first time I tasted, however after drinking several trippels and saisons, I’m now accustomed to the flavours and really enjoyed this b I’m sad to see they are out of buisness, and suprised to see they were in Sacramento. Is this beer still being made?
4.3 Pours slightly hazy with a beautiful golden yellow color and a foamy, soapy white head that will get away from you if you’re not careful (I wasn’t). Clean, earthy, spicy aromas. Crisp biscuity malt and a light candy sweetness followed by peppery, spicy, earthy flavors and a lemony sourness. There seems to be a sour/wild yeast/bacteria sub-flavor here that is excellent and balanced and doesn’t overpower the other flavors. Leaves behind a dry, spicy flavor on the tongue. This is an excellent American version of Saison that’s very drinkable and great with food. Sadly, in looking up information on Odonata Brewing, I found that they recently announced that they have decided to close up shop. This is very upsetting as this beer really is excellent and I was looking forward to having it available now that it showed up at Bev Mo. Going there now to buy a few bottles to enjoy later now that they won’t be around. :(
3.8 22oz bottle. Rating #113. I really thought I had rated this already, glad I have a few bottles in the fridge. Slightly hazy dark yellow gold pour with a nice white head. Light bready spicy aroma, lemony citrus, pretty nice. Light sweetness, a bit acidic, more light lemon with a little zest as well, really nice beer. (1719)
3.8 bottle sent from tim AKA hophead22. now this is by no means a hangar 24 beer, but it was pretty good nonetheless. Shared at DLD. notes of toasted, rustic, dry melon fruit. touch of herbs. some pleasant spice and black pepper notes. good carbonation. nice body. well rounded. nice balance. would happily drink again.
3.6 22 oz. bottle shared by lushawn at DLD 2011- thanks again, Shawn! Pours a cloudy pale yellow color with a big, frothy bone white head. Aroma of peppery spices, banana, straw, farmhouse funk, citrus fruits, and grass. Flavor of tropical and citrus fruits, pepper, herbs, straw, funk, bready malts, and a yeasty banana note. Light-medium bodied with a bready mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Nice saison.
3.8 DLD ’11, Bottle thanks to lushawn. Nice hazy straw yellow pour from bottle, fluffy, slightly fizzy white head. Aroma has notes of tropical fruit, fresh pepper, clove, some banana and grassy notes, slight touch of funky to it. Taste is sweet citrus rind and tropical fruit, notes of pepper and other spice, some sweet sugary notes but balanced well by some funk, yeast, dry finish.
3.3 22oz bottle pours a hazy, sunset yellow with a frothy, active white head. Nose is sweet, honey, flowers, a little yeast, grassy, herbs, lemons. Flavor is honey, a little tropical fruit, grass, flower petals, sugary. Full bodied, sticky sweet finish.
3.1 Served in a wine glass and shared with Jared and Amyliz4. Pours a moderate yellow-golden color with a two-finger head and a bit of white lacing. Not as much as I would expect from a saison and the retention time wasn’t the best. The nose brings some mild stone fruits and a bit of white pepper. There isn’t too much going on but this is fairly pleasant. The flavor consists of a slight amount of light pepper and earth plus some very faint peach and other orange stone fruits. The body is a bit thin with lowish levels of carbonation. This is fairly light and sessionable. It’s not all that complex, but it does drink well. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-30-2010
